Rice Energy’s Growth Can Be Found in the Utica

While Rice Energy Inc.’s main area of operations is the Marcellus Shale formation, the company is finding that its growth area is within the Utica.

During Executive Vice President of Exploration Derek Rice’s end of the day speech at the Hart Energy DUG East conference in Pittsburgh, Rice explained how Rice Energy is currently positioned on 60,000 acres of what the company believes is the Utica Shale’s prime area. He also mentioned how the company sees three or four of the counties in the Utica accounting for 90 percent of the shale’s production within the next five to 10 years.

Before now, Rice Energy has focused its Utica Shale exploration in Belmont County, Ohio, which is one of the three counties it has operations in. Now, Rice Energy is expanding into the Utica Shale in Greene County, Pennsylvania, and is working on developing a well in the play’s deep shale. According to Rice, the new well is drilled and has a lateral of an estimated 5,700 feet. The company anticipates completion of the well this week. Rice discussed the Utica’s questionable viability in his speech: Geologically, it’s not a big risk. We know what the shale

looks like. We’re excited about the rock … The real question is how cheaply can we drill these wells. They’re going to be significantly more expensive than our Marcellus wells. To compete for capital, we need to drive those well costs down.

The Utica Shale has been a hot topic this year at the Hart Energy DUG East conference since natural gas prices are still low and operators are focusing in on areas that will be worth their time, money and efforts. Currently, many operators have been focusing in on shale formations in Washington and Greene counties in Pennsylvania and select few counties in Ohio.

Meet the Candidates for Washington Diana Irey Vaughan Washington County Commissioner I am offering myself to continue in service as Washington County Commissioner with a 20 year proven track record for fiscal discipline, accountability, long range planning, and community service.

During my tenure, Washington County has consistently enjoyed one of the lowest county tax rates in the region and is growing in population.The fiscal health of Washington County is evidenced by our AA bond rating. Our pension fund ranks in the top 11th percentile in the nation for public fund performance for a 7 year tracking period.

I have assisted in creating an environment where businesses choose to locate and grow their businesses. The public/private partnership I helped to create in my first term with the Washington County Chamber of Commerce has helped to leverage millions of dollars of new investment into Washington County. The results are seen in Washington County's ranking of 3rd in the nation in job growth.

I will continue my work to provide available sites for business location, while working on new initiatives to revitalize our small towns.

I plan to keep our taxes competitive by budget forecasting so that we maintain an advantage for economic development.

I am currently working on new initiatives in corrections to reduce recidivism in our correctional facility, thereby reducing the corrections burden on our taxpayers.

I am running for re-election to continue building on the foundation of success Washington County has achieved during my tenure as Commissioner.

The County's success is attributed to continued investment in new business parks, low taxes and our innovative local community leaders. I am proud that the County continues to invest in our communities through such initiatives as our local share account, which has directly invested nearly $65 million and leveraged another $187 million in additional dollars to local projects that are important to our economy. We have invested this combined $251 million not only in new job creation and business development projects that will support our local families, but also in community investments. LSA projects in Charleroi, Washington, Monongahela, Hanover Township and other areas of Washington County have refurbished historic school houses, improved downtown business facades, created new biking/walking trails and improved water sewage infrastructure across our county.

These investments, combined with keeping our taxes at one of the lowest levels in the greater Pittsburgh region, are attracting new residents and businesses to our county and improving job and quality-of-life opportunities for all Washington County residents.

Mike will re-energize the ten year-old County Comprehensive Plan to provide transparent, understandable and accountable direction to county projects. He will use his business experience to bring new levels of efficiency and cost savings to the operation of County Government. He will examine facility utilization and seek to provide sufficient and efficient work space for county operations. He will seek energy audits to determine cost saving measures.

Harvard Report: 5 Ways Shale Development is a Win for America

The Harvard Business School recently published a report that proves shale development in the U.S. is a game changer for not only the nation’s economy, but also for the environment.

The report focuses on an 11-step strategy that would allow the U.S. to maximize its benefits coming from shale development. Breaking it down, the report contains these main points: The U.S. competitiveness challenge, America’s unconventional energy advantage, the energy opportunity at

risk, creating a win-win strategy (three parts) and moving to action. As the report explains, unconventional drilling brought in over $43 billion to annual U.S. GDP and created 2.7 million jobs, which is nearly half of the total jobs added to the nation’s economy since 2005. However, the U.S. is currently stuck “in an unproductive, divisive, and often misinformed debate about our energy strategy, which threatens our nation’s economic and environmental goals.”

The Harvard report explains a strategy for how the U.S. can use shale development in a way that meets “important goals of industry, environmental stakeholders, and governments, and allows the U.S. to responsibly achieve the full benefits of this unique and vital opportunity.” The following is a brief description of each key point the Harvard report points out and its plan for U.S. Shale development.

“THE U.S. COMPETITIVENESS CHALLENGE” In order for the U.S. economy to better its standard of living, considerable amounts of work will have to be done, considering the standard began to deteriorate before the Great Recession took place. What is LSVTBIG®? Specific training in increasing amplitude of limb and body movement (Bigness) in people with Parkinson’s disease (PD). LSVT LOUD® improves vocal loudness by stimulating the muscles of the voice box (larynx) and speech mechanism through a systematic hierarchy of exercises. The treatment improves respiratory, laryngeal and articulatory function to maximize speech intelligibility. LSVT LOUD® uses loudness training to bring the voice to an improved, healthy vocal loudness with no strain.

Recently, LSVT LOUD® has been applied to select individuals with stroke, multiple sclerosis, Down syndrome, and cerebral palsy with positive outcomes.

Physician Referrals: A physician’s prescription for a medically necessary evaluation and treatment (4 days a week for 4 weeks) can assist patients in accessing LSVT LOUD® or LSVT BIG®.

While LSVT BIG® and LSVT LOUD® have been successfully administered to individuals in all stages of PD, the treatment has been most effective among those who are in early or middle stages of the condition.

She earned her M.S. in Occupational Therapy in 2002 from Boston University and her BS in Kinesiology from Penn State University in 1999. Alice completed her LSVT BIG® certification in February of 2015.

Mike Fletcher, DPT is a Physical Therapist practicing at Canonsburg Hospital. He received his Doctorate of Physical Therapy from Chatham University in 2012. Mike has practiced as a Physical Therapist for 2 ½ years and has been an outpatient therapist at Canonsburg Hospital for ACPT since July of 2014. He completed his LSVT BIG® certification in February of 2015.

Julie Rodgers, MS, CCC-SLP/L, has been a Speech-Language Pathologist for thirty-two years.

She has practiced in the Pittsburgh area for the last twenty-nine years and is currently practicing at Canonsburg Hospital for ACPT. At Penn State University she earned her MS in Communication Disorders. Julie has been certified as an LSVT-LOUD® provider since 2010.

• Monthly Networking Luncheon As part of the Southpointe Marcellus Shale Chamber’s goal to connect business executives with each other, a monthly networking luncheon is held for both Chamber members and non-members. The luncheon’s venue is Bella Sera (www.bellaserapgh.com), located at 414 Morganza Road, Canonsburg. Usually, the event is conducted every third Thursday of the month, from 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM. By far, the Southpointe Chamber’s monthly networking luncheon is the largest in the area. Shale News Harvard Report Continued from page 16 U.S.-based multinational businesses have outperformed those in other advanced economies, small businesses in the U.S. are registering eroding performance, and business failures have outnumbered new startups from 2009 through 2012—the last year of available data—for the first time since at least the 1970s. U.S. growth has exceeded that of Europe and Japan in recent years, but our growth is still the slowest in many decades.” The U.S.’ poor economy is reflected by the nation’s overall fundamental competitiveness. The U.S. Competitiveness Project at Harvard Business School (HBS) points out various key areas where the nation’s business environment has declined, including skills, infrastructure, the cost of doing business, and corporate tax framework. Due to the U.S.’ political gridlock, very little effort has been made when it comes solving “America’s emerging weaknesses.” The strategy developed in the report is based upon the political gridlock which is a threat to unconventional development in the U.S. “AMERICA’S UNCONVENTIONAL ENERGY ADVANTAGE” The U.S.’ “never ending supply” and low-cost

unconventional gas and oil resources is considered a “once-in-a-generation opportunity to change the nation’s economic and energy trajectory.” Thanks to the shale resources, the U.S. has a global energy advantage. Its wholesale natural gas prices are nearly a third of what prices are in other industrial countries, and industrial electricity prices in the U.S. are between 30 percent and 50 percent lower when compared to other major export nations.

According to the report, this means there are huge benefits for “industry, households, governments, and communities, while reducing America’s trade deficit and geopolitical risks.” The U.S. was lucky compared to other countries and had a 10 to 15 year head start when it came to commercializing unconventional resources. However, the recent drop in global oil prices has impacted the U.S.’ short-term plans for unconventional resources, but “low prices are unlikely to significantly impact the fundamental U.S. competitive advantage over the next several decades.”

Hope Fest The Armory Youth Center has an event planned for Sept 26, 2015 in Canonsburg. It will be part of a Nationwide City Transformation initiative called “Hope Fest” and it is planned for several cities in Western PA this year.

Pittsburgh, PA, June 23, 2015 — Today, Burns & Scalo Real Estate Services (BSRES) and Rice Energy celebrated the development of Rice’s new headquarters at Zenith Ridge in Southpointe II, and the raising of the structure’s walls to construct a 150,000 square foot, five-story, Class A office building ready for occupancy in March 2016.

Motorists on I-79 saw an entire five-story building appear in about one week. The site’s terrain is well-suited for a construction technique not often used in western Pennsylvania known as “cast-in-place.” Walls were assembled as 20 feet wide by 74 feet high sections (weighing from 145,000 to 165,000 pounds). Concrete was cast before being lifted into place with a 350-ton crane - cutting at least two months off the construction schedule.

Zenith Ridge is Southpointe’s highest point providing panoramic views of the rolling hills and valleys that make up Washington County’s terrain. Visible from Interstate 79, Zenith Ridge is the perfect location that makes a big statement for Rice Energy and the other buildings situated on the campus.

"Rice Energy set up shop in Southpointe in 2009 and has since grown into a top-25 producer of natural gas in the United States with over 325 full-time employees. The significant majority of Rice’s Marcellus and Utica Shale field operations are less than an hour from Southpointe, giving us the opportunity to centralize our employees in a common workplace. I believe some credit for our success can be attributed to being close to the field and close to each other," according to Daniel Rice CEO of Rice Energy.

He also explains why Rice Energy chose Zenith Ridge: “Our criteria for a new headquarters was simple: we wanted to remain in close proximity to our field operations, we wanted an office that can hold all current employees and accommodate growth for the next decade, and we wanted a state of the art building that is emblematic of Rice Energy’s innovative and technological ways. Allysia, tell us about yourself and why you entered the health profession.

I always wanted to be in either law enforcement or in the health profession as a doctor or nurse.

So I spent 18 years in nursing. I am currently

near the completion of my Master’s degree in Nursing.

What is your responsibility here at Canonsburg Hospital and how long have you held that position?

Currently I am the Director of Nursing Operations over Inpatient Units, ICU and the Emergency Depts.

I have spent the last 5 years in this role.

Dr. Latouf and Allysia: All of our staff are in ongoing training as we feed off the 17 initiatives for patient care established by the Allegheny Health Network.

Our focus is on higher quality care while applying current technology to conveniently and more quickly access patient records. The balance we are constantly seeking to maintain is greater effectiveness in quality care while completing timely and accurate patient records to meet demands of AHN standards.

The challenge is keeping our priorities in line.

The EPIC (Emergency Privacy Information Center) software has raised the bar to be more on top of the medical records of our patients, thereby providing better care. In addition, all of our ER doctors are board certified plus we have access to world class facilities through the Allegheny Health Network.

What does a typical day at the ER look like for you?

We use the expression “controlled chaos” to describe the Emergency Room environment. When someone comes into our ER, that person is maybe experiencing one of the worst days of their life. Our goal is the good of each and every patient that arrives at our hospital. So our focus must be on the individual who is currently under our care.

Allysia, how long would you say it takes for a new employee to begin to feel that they are doing their job well?

A.

When we take graduates right out of nursing school, it usually takes up to 3 months of orientation to develop confidence and competence in their job.

However, it generally only takes four to six weeks for an employee with some prior experience to get up to speed in the ER.

What would you tell the person who is looking into the health profession as a career?

Consider working in the health profession for the right reason - not for the money, not for the image or any other reason. We look for caring, organized, hard-working, professional applicants who are good with patients by putting them first. They must be able to treat them as if they were their father, their mother, or their sister or brother.

What is your biggest goal in the Emergency Department?

Allysia: I want everyone to leave well and every one of our nurses to leave happy, knowing they did their job well today.

Dr. Latouf: “Our nurses and physicians work as a team to so that every patient is seen promptly and feels cared for. We pride ourselves on providing kind, compassionate, evidence-based medical care. In the end, it is all about the patient.”

Arguments that have been made mainly focus on local environmental and climate impacts, along with dispute over the facts surrounding fracking, both in the scientific community as well as among average citizens. According to the report, stakeholders are not reaching their most important goals, and the ability for the U.S. to change its economic trajectory is crumbling. The energy industry is now facing a tough battle.

Due to local environmental performance not improving quick enough and “large-scale progress toward a cleaner-energy and a lower-carbon future” still being debated, the chance of the U.S. not capitalizing on shale development is a reality.

“CREATING A WIN-WIN STRATEGY” The HBS- Boston Consulting Group (BCG) project was created to construct a “shared fact base, engage the key stakeholders, and advance a shared agenda for developing America’s unconventional gas and oil resources.” The project is aimed to address “key objectives” of all stakeholders. The “win-win pathway” is 11 steps that stretches across three different main adjectives: 1. Capitalizing on America’s new energy advantage to enhance U.S. competitiveness and the prosperity of the

average citizen; 2. Minimizing the local environmental, health, and community impacts of developing the new energy resources at competitive cost; 3. Utilizing unconventionals to accelerate a practical and cost-efficient transition to a lower-carbon, cleaner-energy future.

“MOVING TO ACTION” The strategy the report has proposed is achievable, and the steps are “practical.” By moving the “win-win pathway” into action, the U.S. will be able to maximize its energy advantage and act on its economic, environmental and climate goals.

According to the report, in order for the steps to be put into action, discussion needs to move past ideology and the political gridlock needs to be torn down. “Industry, NGOs, governments, and academics must transcend their traditional positions, let go of the exaggerated rhetoric, and start overcoming historic skepticism and distrust that have led to the current, zero-sum mindsets and halting progress.” For stakeholders to reach their essential goals, they will have to realize the benefits of working towards a better nation as a whole, rather than their own personal interests. For the U.S. to capitalize on the opportunities shale development can provide, the U.S. will need to reach “a ‘rational middle’ ground.”

Southpointe Marcellus Shale Chamber of Commerce Activities Last Quarter

Below are some of the events sponsored by the Southpointe Marcellus Shale Chamber of Commerce last quarter.

Nemacolin Energy Institute The Southpointe Marcellus Shale Chamber of Commerce was also a media sponsor of Nemacolin Energy Institute’s 6th Annual Appalachian Region Shale Energy Conference & Golf Invitational. The two-day event was held at the Nemacolin Woodlands Resort, on May 11 and 12, 2015. Key sponsors were 84 Lumber, 84 Energy Supply, and the Nemacolin Woodlands Resort. Some of the notable speakers included members of the US House of Representatives, including Pennsylvania Congressmen Tim Murphy, Glenn Thompson, and Keith Rothfus; along with Ohio Congressman Bill Johnson.

Rumfish Grille After-Hour Mixer The Southpointe Marcellus Shale Chamber of Commerce organized a social networking occasion at the Rumfish Grille (1155 Washington Pike, Bridgeville) on May 13, 2015.

Despite the unseasonably cool weather, the mixer had a good turnout. Rumfish sponsored the hors d'oeuvres and provided a cash bar for the attendees. Both Chamber members and non-members were present at the mixer.

California University Center for Innovation Don Hodor, Southpointe Chamber’s Executive Director, was part of the group that spearheaded the “Business Ignition Meet-Up,” hosted by the California University’s Center for Innovation. The meeting was held on May 14, 2015 (6 PM to 8PM) at the Cal U’s Center For Innovation’s office (135 Technology Drive). Dr. Steve Whitehead, Director of the California Center for Innovation, moderated the meeting.

The participants comprised mainly of aspiring entrepreneurs, and a network of mentors from various fields/industries, who provided answers, advice and guidance to the audience regarding their business initiatives.
