pon receiving their degrees, many college graduates lack concrete vocational paths and can offer only shrugs and sighs when people pose “What’s next?â€? to them. Ariana SepĂşlveda suffered no such unease at her May commencement, having earlier in the spring secured the role of Aurora in the People’s Light premiere of “Sleeping Beauty: A Musical Panto.â€? Through Jan. 15, the 22-year-old is frolicking over her fortune in fraternizing with a South Philly-heavy cast bent on beckoning audiences to seasonal revelry. “I couldn’t have asked for a better company with which to explore my love for this art form,â€? the East Passyunk Crossing dweller said of her affiliation with the Malvern-

based entity. “My fellow performers and all of the others involved have been amazing, too, and really make me eager to stay here in Philadelphia long term and be a part of more great work.â€? People’s Light customarily caps the calendar year with especially uplifting pieces and has succeeded again in promoting harmony by offering “a raucous, heartfelt spin on the classic tale of fairies, awakenings, and true love.â€? With music and lyrics by Passyunk Square denizen Alex Bechtel, the brainchild finds the hires working to reiterate, as director Pete Pryor posits, that “love is the cure for any curse,â€? in this case the scourge of the wicked Chanteuse that the titular character’s father seeks to keep from confounding his daughter’s existence. “There’s so much at stake for her,â€? SepĂşlveda said. “I think she has such maturity for a 16-yearold going through these discoveries, and I’d say she pulls that off because she’s super bright, energetic, and charismatic.â€? /^^ZOcaST]`2]\ObcQQW To the Editor: I am a senior attending Julia R. Masterman High School and a resident of the 185th Legislative District living in Girard Estate. I highly applaud Rep. Maria P. Donatucci on her measure protecting the identity of 911 callers, which was signed into law by Gov. Tom Wolf on May 27. I am confident that this large step towards victim privacy will not only increase the people’s reliance on police officers but also improve the relationships among citizens and the police. The level of impor-

tance in which Donatucci views education is lucidly evident through her voting and support of specific legislation. In September 2014, she voted in favor of the cigarette tax legislation whose proceeds are credited to the School District of Philadelphia. Donatucci worked towards raising money for the underfunded school district, which can be seen through her recent support for the Senate Bill 984. The majority of the tax revenue involving this legalization of Uber and Lyft’s ride-sharing will go directly towards the Philadelphia school district. As a senior

viewing the economic struggles a Philadelphia high school must face on a daily basis, I highly commend her persistency towards economically aiding our city’s school district. Donatucci was once a member of the Friends of Girard Park, and she most likely knows that there is a large age gap among residents of Girard Estate. This contrast of generations can become a barrier between the neighbors in the area and with her gracious help, I would like to break it. Looking into the future, a volunteering organization could be formed in which the youth spend a specific amount of Saturdays every month volunteering to help the elderly residents of the neighborhood. These historical houses are big and I am sure that some of the senior citizens would appreciate a helping hand with their chores around the house. I once again am writing in to graciously thank Maria Donatucci for her efforts toward 911 victim caller protection and aid towards the impecunious Philadelphia School District. I am looking forward to working with a fellow member of South Philadelphia like Donatucci in order to improve the social relationships among the youth and elderly resident of Girard Estate. E]`R]\bVSAb`SSb What do you think of the plans to recount General Election votes in certain states, including Pennsylvania? 7\bS`dWSeaPg8]aS^V;gS`a>V]b]aPgBW\O5O`QSOc

“I’m not surprised that Pennsylvania wants to be involved; however, what’s the ultimate point of a recount? (Donald) Trump is still going to be the president-elect. Edwin Brydges, 1200 block of Ritner Street

“It’s such a waste of time and will mean nothing. It must be a slow news week for people to want to pursue something that will accomplish nothing. Stephen Candeloro, 2200 block of South 11th Street

Spilling over with thoughts To the Editor: Why do trash collectors spill some of the trash in the street (“Trashed, Sept. 29)? The answer is because people overload their trash containers, especially the recycling ones. If some trash spills in the street, the person who put out the overloaded container should pick up the spilled trash and put it back on the container for the next collection day. They also could buy a larger recycling container or use two. Tom, you also say the trash trucks should get out of the way for the SEPTA buses. How are they going to get out of the way? There are always cars and trucks parked on both sides of the street. Maybe the passengers who are in a big hurry could get off the bus and walk to the corner. Also, I would like to remind everyone Styrofoam, packing inserts or peanuts, and plastic bags are not recyclable. Rose Rafferty South Philadelphia

“I respect the right to conduct recounts, but they won’t affect anything. I don’t think there is any merit to these actions. Everyone is just going to have to accept the outcome of the election eventually. Michael Nichols, 2000 block of Jackson Street

continued from page 1 so many people have, I expect for this to be a success because South Philly looks out for its own.â€? The Marconi resident is overseeing the park-situated display of philanthropy under the umbrella of Taking Our South Philadelphia Streets Back, a Facebook-centric community watchdog that her mother, Carol Lanni, a 2016 South Philly Review Difference Maker, created in ’13 following a robbery involving the latter’s son. With more than 23,000 “likes,â€? the page has become a sound source of community news and has aligned the overseers with numerous businesses, civic organizations, and residents who want to foster South Philly’s reputation as a safe haven where nobody’s needs go overlooked. “You can’t go wrong in helping the community,â€? Kayla Camaione Vasilakos said from Beach Tanning South Philly, 2525 S. Broad St., another donation location. “There should be constant attention given to what we’re each bringing to the table, and something like this will no doubt make everyone feel better for having participated.â€? The Lower Moyamensing dweller will serve as the on-air herald for the plaza endeavor, with Vascom Media Group, which operates her South Beat 103, and southphillypluggedin.com handling the broadcasting duties. Having known Lanni for a little more than a year, she gladly participated in Aug. 15’s Taking Our South Philadelphia Streets Back-backed Thin Blue Line rally, also at Marconi Plaza, in support of police officers and law enforcement personnel, so when the fall unfolded, Vasilakos felt she could show comparable reverence to the community by building on an enjoyable practice from her days as an Atlantic Broadcasting personality. “We’d strive to help the homeless, and I’d say we were successful,â€? she said. “There’s also so much work to do for people who have residences yet are really struggling to make ends meet, and everybody talks about that this time of year. The radiothon is a way to make a definite contribution to their lives, and I’m hoping people come in droves to make a difference.â€? pon receiving their degrees, many college graduates lack concrete vocational paths and can offer only shrugs and sighs when people pose “What’s next?â€?

The adolescent, according to the thespian, also revels in esteeming people as equals and strives for

inclusivity, a trait that she and SepĂşlveda share. With South Philly native Tom Teti, who portrays her patriarch, and current locals Bechtel, Tabitha Allen, Luke Bradt, Tori Mittelman, and Josh Totora among her peers, that deep desire for unity has met with resounding regard. “Like her, I’m eager to learn,â€? the actress said, noting how that enthusiasm for increasing wisdom comes through in the song “Lost in the Stars.â€? “Since I graduated, I’ve become really excited to find out more about who I am, so to have this job at this point is going to go a long way to helping me to acknowledge what I’ve seen and what I could become.â€? THAT INFATUATION WITH considering sequences and processes dates back to the performer’s upbringing in Warwick, N.Y. With steady influence from brother Noel and immersion into musicals’ wonders through her parents, the Empire State product felt quite compelled to court a creative journey and soon found herself hooked on every aspect of stage-centric projects. “I liked being able to take everything in and learn the dialogue of the field, so to

speak,â€? SepĂşlveda said of her pursuit of mastery of what drives creative minds to be so daring in believing they can tell enriching tales. “The ambition, I’d say, was always there, and I just had to work to comprehend what could happen if I really put all that I had into this passion.â€? Relationships with her home state’s Forestburgh Playhouse and TADA! Youth Theater proved pivotal sparks, and she credits their guidance with making her early efforts a reflection of her constant curiosity, especially due to her being able to associate with and pick the brains of equity employees. “They were incredibly captivating,â€? she recalled. “I gained this amazing sense of how much I needed to devote to my maturation, and that set me up for finding a college destination that could give me extra chances to work on being even more self-motivated.â€? Yearning to experience post-secondary education in a sizable expanse, she earned placement at The University of the Arts and made the most out of the “It’s whatever you make itâ€? sentiment by engrossing herself in her studies and roles, the latter

including Ofelia in “Anna in the Tropics,â€? Sheila in “A Chorus Line,â€? and Riff Raff in “The Rocky Horror Show.â€? That gusto and outreach from People’s Light personnel made her final semester at the Center City institution particularly pleasant, as she learned that life as a Philadelphia professional would begin not far beyond the acceptance of her diploma. “I’d been working outside the field, so I knew I could fall back on other avenues, but I can’t say it loudly enough how fortunate I feel to be able to have such a great part to play for such an outstanding leader in local theater.â€? Acquiring the part as a princess on the precipice of transformational experiences has proven an occasion to intensify awareness of the Philadelphia theater scene’s reliance on go-getters to propel the craft to new heights. Because of that, one could contend that “Sleeping Beauty: A Musical Pantoâ€? will serve as the first of many chances for SepĂşlveda to show that new blood can come to earn constant consideration as fluid contributors. “We’re still very early into this run,â€? she said of the work that debuted Nov. 16. “Al-

ready, though, I know the tireless professionalism of those around me is going to be a permanent motivator. I’m excited to meet more people like that in the near future.â€? Given that she has logged just six months in South Philly and resides in an area rich with acting contemporaries, SepĂşlveda will likely have no trouble with making such acquaintances. “There’s such a great vibe down here, and it’s really coming through this time of year,â€? she said. “It suits me in so many ways to be here at this point in my life.â€? ome people love to initiate the countdown to Christmas long before Thanksgiving has even passed, and now that December has arrived, expect subtraction to be even more in vogue. Fall in love with reduction through the addition of this Eggnog Pound Cake recipe to your dessert contemplations. Mark Casasanto has long given readers fulfilling means to be jovial, and this creation from the Whitman resident promises a season’s worth of mirth, especially if you consider combining it with a scoop (or two!) of your favorite ice cream.

beer in front of a fire pit: Crisp air, leaves rustle in the wind, embers glow and the bottle is ice cold. Take a seat... The flames flicker and the smoke shifts its direction. The world is quiet. You could be deep in the woods, in a suburban backyard or on a rooftop deck above a city street—it’s your moment, you decide. The fire is orange, then deep red, then white hot. You take a sip and feel the warmth on your outstretched legs. Tonight, there is no game on TV, no crying kids, no barroom din. There is no conversation, no music, no laughter. There is just a fire and a beer. And your own thoughts. Social norms say that alcohol is to be consumed as part of another activity, in the company of others. Its enjoyment hinges on sharing and bonding: Happy hour and tailgating and cocktail parties and... here’s to good friends! Drinking alone? That’s completely abnormal, a classic sign of alcoholism or depression, isn’t it? And, yet, from time to time, everybody needs a moment like this, to get lost in thought with nothing more than a fire and a beer. It’s the perfect antidote to a bad day at the office or a season of political madness. It’s inexpensive. It’s non-addictive. You probably won’t burn down your deck. Do use a fire-starter. Simplicity is important, so don’t get bogged down with collecting twigs and kindling. Grab a package of Duraflame Quick Start from your hardware store. Don’t use a fake fire log. Its flame is dull and unnatural and predictable; the blaze from a dry piece of oak is a mystery that dances and crackles with a random ebb and flow. A bundle of real wood from the Acme is good for three or four fires. Don’t build a huge bonfire. This flame is for you, not the entire neighborhood. A couple logs should be good for an hour or two. Do use an ember screen, so you don’t torch your neighbor’s roof.

Deh[i[hlWj_edih[gk_h[Z Don’t wait till it gets warm. The experience is enhanced by bracing cold air, even better if it’s snowing. Bring a blanket, but you’ll be peeling it off once the fire is roaring. Do wear gloves, because that can of beer will freeze your hands. Don’t bring your smart phone. It’s a distraction. And don’t listen to music, either. In silence before a glimmering fire, your thoughts will wander someplace good. Sip, savor and enjoy the moment. Here’s a few fire-worthy brews: Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier Märzen (Bamberg, Germany), made with malt smoked over a beechwood fire. There are many other smoked beers, all of which are judged against this outstanding lager. Carton Epitome (Atlantic Highlands, N.J.), a strong (10 percent alcohol) black IPA with a huge hop aroma and—despite its color—just a touch of roasted malt flavor. Saucony Creek X-Reserve Imperial Vanilla Porter (Kutztown, Pa.), a smooth, somewhat sweet dark beer with smoky, chocolate notes. It’s like a s’more for grownups. 'RJ´VK+HDG3HQQV\OYDQLD7X[H GR (Milton, Del.), named after the famous red-and-black plaid flannel hunting wear from Clinton County’s Woolrich factory, it carries the oddly alluring aroma and flavor of spruce. 7ZLWWHU#%HHUB5$'$5

When circumstances thwarted that idea, he gave added credence to his parents’ desire to open an eatery, and, since 1997, he and his creative creators have overseen Talk of the Town Cheesesteaks. “They deserve credit for having a dream, the co-proprietor said from the thriving Packer Park location. “They had the ambition every step of the way, and it keeps paying off. The Girard Estate resident has loved logging years as an equally passionate provider of provisions, especially since he and parents Cheryl and Bill initially needed to rebuild the space from scratch because of a fire. His father, who once helmed a local cheesesteak shop, taught D’Ambrosia much of what he knows about the culinary industry, but both can claim that they inspired his professionalism. “I love hearing stories and talking with people, he said of the amicable atmosphere that he stresses as an operational must. “I feel as if I’m welcoming people to my home when they come here, so there has to be that consideration for making every experience great. D’Ambrosia, whose patriarch also served for four decades as the president of the Delaware Valley Youth Athletic Association, nourishes an affinity for competition, too, and his location’s proximity to the Sports Complex has enabled him to fraternize with numerous athletes whose images he has immortalized on Talk of the Town’s walls and through Facebook. Regardless of relative fame or anonymity, his spot rarely goes without heavy traffic, which D’Ambrosia said counts as a testament to the freshness of the food. “Again, that comes from thinking the customers are like family members, he said. “It’s easy to say to our team that they shouldn’t present to anyone something that

they wouldn’t eat themselves. We take pride in everything that comes out of here. One could easily take a long time to place an order at Talk of the Town because of the many tempting options, with D’Ambrosia noting the regard with which people esteem the chicken cutlet selections. For this space, though, he went up one section on the menu and grabbed the Italiano Roast Pork as this week’s Food Feature contribution. “We’ve had it since we opened, and it just bursts with flavor, he said. “It’s one of my favorites, too, because the cooking process just makes you that much more eager to eat it since it requires a few hours. Trust me that if you make this at home, you’re going to feel the same way.

DIRECTIONS: Preheat the oven to 450 degrees. Pour oil in the base of a large pan. Spread the pepper, garlic, and onion soup dip around the pan and the pork. Cover the pork with the oil, and place its bones alongside it. Fill the pan about ž of the way with water, which you will use for juice when done preparing the pork. Cook for five hours. Serve as sandwiches with the cheese and broccoli rabe as toppings. SPR Comment at southphillyreview.com/food-and-drink/features.

eing the oldest out of seven children, Quade Green receives regular reminders of the rewards of being a leader. That immense maturity has translated to basketball court-situated success for most of his life, and the 18-yearold’s regard for hard work and sacrifice bred intense interest from top college programs, with the Ss. Neumann-Goretti High School senior committing to the University of Kentucky Nov. 19. “Having a chance to play for any Division I program is big, so, of course, because of where I’ll be going, I feel fortunate, Green said about his future residence in Lexington, the home of the Wildcats, winners of eight NCAA titles. “I’ll be playing with a lot of talent around me, so I’ll be looking to make everyone better. The coveted guard selected the Southeastern Conference program from an impressive handful of schools, including Villanova University, the defending national champions, who will welcome fellow Neumann-Goretti standout Dhamir Cosby-Roundtree next season, and Syracuse University, which has a history of landing local stars, with Neumann-Goretti alums Rick Jackson and Antonio “Scoop Jardine and South of South product Dion Waiters, a member of the Miami Heat, having excelled for the Orange. Having spent the early stages of last month pondering his prospects, the 6-foot-1 dynamo decided Kentucky could best bolster his game and encourage the accumulation of unforgettable experiences. “I’m going to do everything that I can to sustain their reputation as winners, Green said. “During the recruiting process, I learned so much more about their makeup, which I’d already known a lot about because I’ve followed them for a long time. Similar admirers of the Bluegrass State inhabitants no doubt know that the John Calipari-led unit has proven a consistent supplier of roster members for NBA franchises. In fact, the likely departure of

guards De’Aaron Fox, Malik Monk, and Isaiah Briscoe for next year’s draft helped Green to make his decision, stating that the eighth-year overseer wanted him as “the next coach for what will certainly be a high-flying squad. “There’s so much to look forward to, the floor general, ranked 22nd in the ESPN 100 and third among point guards, said of his choice, which he made public through Neumann-Goretti’s Hoops Madness celebration. “You say ‘Kentucky Wildcats’ to people, and they know the history. I want to be a part of making more of it. GREEN GREW TO love basketball quickly after trying out the game as a six-year-old. The Southwest Philly resident also found himself fond of baseball, but hoops came to hold more sway as he neared adolescence, with eventual invitations to national camps as huge influences. “I was really able to see what it would take to make a lasting impression in this sport, he said, noting how the opportunities placed him among peers who have

likewise received ample attention from renowned programs. “I dedicated myself to getting better and growing every time I practiced or went out there to play. Aware of the East Passyunk Crossingbased program’s winning tradition and the achievements of its top contributors, Green believed that the school could provide a comprehensive court-situated education and joined the Saints to learn from coach Carl Arrigale and his charges. “It’s been an amazing time so far, and I expect this year to be a great adventure because everybody will want a piece of us, the All-Catholic said of the school that last season claimed the City title and the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association’s Class 3A state crown, its sixth in seven years, and narrowly lost the Catholic League championship game. “I think there’s going to be added pressure because we have two guys going D-1, but we’re all ready to take on anybody. That’s just who we are as a team. Green credits Arrigale, a multiple winner of the South Philly Review’s Readers’

Choice Award for top high school/youth coach, for his increased confidence and composure, blessings that made the young man even more appealing to Calipari, who made two trips to South Philly to make his pitch for the five-star recruit. Their relationship figures to evolve even more as the Saints’ slate unfolds, with Arrigale thrilled to oversee the swan-song campaign for the player whom he dubbed “a tremendous shooter and “a competitor with stellar footwork and “a real will to win. Evan Daniels, a contributor for scout.com, which esteems Green as the 25th-ranked senior in the country, also commended the leader as “a really talented passer and someone “who can run a team. Such skills became known on a greater scale over the spring and summer when Green competed for the PSA Cardinals on Nike’s EYBL circuit, averaging 14.9 points, 9.8 assists, and 3.2 steals, the latter totals being the competition’s top tallies. “That was another huge opportunity that I’m thankful for, he said. “There are some really incredible competitors out there, so being able to test myself against them is going to make this year better as we look to bring more championships to NeumannGoretti before I go to Kentucky. Because of the presence of Green and Cosby-Roundtree, along with the efforts of Arrigale’s other horses, one can expect for the Saints to have a memorable winter, with the Kentucky signee eager to take one game at a time. He holds the same stance with respect to his impending journey as a provider of joy for Rupp Arena attendees. The Wildcats have, since 2010, become pejoratively known as a one-and-done program, meaning fresh faces have given Calipari a year before bolting to the NBA. Green has not even contemplated the duration of his stay at Kentucky, saying there is no need to force something that is God’s will. “Some people get way ahead of themselves, he said. “I’m a Neumann-Goretti Saint today, and I’ll be one tomorrow. That’s my focus. SPR Contact Staff Writer Joseph Myers at jmyers@southphillyreview.com. Comment at southphillyreview.com/sports/features.

WGLGQ¡WWDNHKLPORQJWREHFRPHDVWDU It did take him a while to get on track. Lio Rush is a professional wrestler starring for Ring of Honor. And at 22 years old, he already has a rĂŠsumĂŠ that many longtime stars would be proud to boast. But it didn’t just happen overnight. According to the man whose real name is Lionel Green, it’s been a roller coaster ride from the start. “Growing up, I was a great athlete, and All-American,â€? said Rush, who grew up in Maryland. “Then I got off track and went down a dark path that I didn’t think I could return from. Then my son was born, and I got back on track. It’s made me recover.â€? Rush is now on the path to stardom. On Sunday, he’ll return to Philadelphia when he takes part in a television taping at the 2300 Arena at the corner of South Swanson and Ritner streets. The show will take place two days after Ring of Honor’s pay-per-view, Final Battle, which means fans will see what’s next for all the stars of the promotion. “It should be fun, everything starts over and you see new rivalries,â€? said Rush, who is unsure of who he’ll be wrestling at the show. “I never know until a day or two before. It makes it kind of stressful, but it makes it fun.â€? The show will also feature a first round of a tournament featuring longtime stars of the promotion. Christopher Daniels, Alex Shelley, Colt Cabana, Jushin “Thunderâ€? Liger, Jay Lethal, B.J. Whitmer and Jay and Mark Briscoe will take part in the tournament. Others slated to appear are Ring of Honor champion Adam Cole, TV champion Bobby Fish, tag team champions The Young Bucks and Cody R, who wrestled for WWE as Cody Rhodes, and is the son of

one of the newcomers. “I think I’m the youngest wrestler on the roster,â€? said Rush, who won the Ring of Honor Top Prospect Tournament this year. “It’s a pretty cool feeling. I’m here because my talent is undeniable and it’s a great feeling to be one of the elite of the profession.â€? Rush won’t have to wait long to return to Philadelphia. His next action will be on Dec. 16 when he wrestles for Tommy Dreamer’s House of Hardcore, also at the 2300 Arena. There, he’ll meet Tony Nese, a guy who has been performing for World Wrestling Entertainment as part of their cruiserweight division. While a spot in the largest federation isn’t Rush’s main goal, he’s more than happy with Ring of Honor, it’s certainly an option down the line. “I think (wrestling Nese) will give me a chance to show everyone what I can do,â€? Rush said. “When WWE had the Cruiserweight Classic, a lot of fans asked if I was going to be part of it. I’ve learned wrestling is all about timing, that’s the biggest thing I’ve learned during my time, and it seems like everyone eventually gets to WWE if they’re good enough, so we’ll see what happens.â€? AND WHILE THE high flying star is turning But before he’s starring on “Rawâ€? or heads with his strong matches, he’s still “Smackdown Live,â€? Rush will continue to delight his fans in the ring. learning. Despite his impressive rĂŠsumĂŠ, he’s still Dusty Rhodes. While Rush is unsure who he’ll go up against, he is certain it will make for a great show. “Philadelphia fans are great,â€? Rush said. “My first time there, I didn’t let them get to me. They’re great fans, they have fun and they know wrestling.â€? Then they know Rush has had a pretty impressive run as of late. The former All-American high school wrestler started out by training in Maryland, and began wrestling for Maryland Championship Wrestling. He then branched out to Combat Zone Wrestling, which is based in Philadelphia and South Jersey. His performance there got him hooked up with EVOLVE wrestling, which is where Ring of Honor spotted him. Now, he’s wrestling for many promotions, but his home base is Ring of Honor. “Ring of Honor is the best wrestling; the locker room is just unreal,â€? Rush said. “And we work with this triangle of great promotions in (Pro Wrestling Guerrilla), CMLL, New Japan, and then Ring of Honor is where it all comes together, it’s the best in the world.â€?
