Southmoor Academy provides a good and improving standard of education for all of its students. Ofsted
SOUTHMOOR ACADEMY Southmoor Academy is one of few schools in Sunderland with its own Sixth Form meaning that we can take your child from primary education to university, training or employment without having a disruptive change at age sixteen. As we like to say ‌ from primary school to medical school! Our thriving Sixth Form opened in 2014 and was the first new sixth form to open in Sunderland over the last thirty years. We are constantly seeking to improve. We place no limits on the potential of our students. We want to launch them into the world as confident young people fully equipped for a successful future and rewarding career. This has been our guiding principle during years of unbroken success which has seen us maintain a place with the very best Sunderland schools in terms of achievement at GCSE. In an era of rising targets and greater challenges for schools, Southmoor Academy stands out as a school which has met every challenge and has been recognised by successive Ofsted inspections for its effectiveness.

TEACHING & LEARNING
Our enthusiastic teachers and support staff breathe life into learning by offering an inclusive and creative curriculum that includes a broad range of subjects. In an era where schools are offering less choice, Southmoor is expanding its curriculum to allow students to pursue the subjects that they are most passionate about. We also teach pupils for longer. With regular assessments, individual support and encouragement, we ensure that students reach for the most challenging targets to help them achieve their full potential.
Good teaching, learning and assessment enable all groups of pupils to progress well. Ofsted
COHESIVE COMMUNITY A
Southmoor is about so much more than results. Visitors to the school echo Ofsted’s verdict – we are truly a “cohesive community”, one where respect and care are more than slogans, they are everyday events. At Southmoor we want to create the young people who will inherit our society and make it a better place. That process starts with a school community which models not just the British Values which are so important to our culture but the spirit of cooperation and teamwork that is essential to our future in a time of new challenges and opportunities.
The behaviour of students is good. Students are polite and courteous to adults and respectful of each other … They enjoy coming to the academy which they described as ‘welcoming and encouraging’ and as having a good community spirit. Ofsted

We pride ourselves on the attitude and behaviour of our students both inside and out of school. We are aware of the challenges that secondary school can bring and offer a highly experienced pastoral team and support system to give students the help and guidance they may need. Whether that be from our team of dedicated House Leaders, the school nurse or Sunderland Mind who offer regular sessions to give advice in all areas of physical and mental well-being. We are privileged to have many students who have truly taken to heart the idea of peer support. We understand that for some students it’s not always easy to talk to a teacher or adult, therefore we have award winning teams of student volunteers who form our ‘Peer2Peer’ pupil mentors, our Anti-Bullying Mentors and our Young Health Champions as well as a dedicated Student Council who communicate the ideas of their peers to the leadership team of the academy.
At Southmoor we enjoy success and look to celebrate this. From Principal’s Awards, subject area certificates, sports trophies and House Award Evenings to truly unforgettable school performances, orchestra and choir that have thrilled and delighted the public, we spend time recognising the achievement and talent of our students.
I think Southmoor lives up to their motto: ‘Aspire, Achieve, Enjoy’. My son reflects all of these when he talks about his day. Parent

ENJOYMENT At Southmoor we are developing a curriculum to meet the individual interests of every child. We are constantly changing to deliver a range of subjects and activities to excite and engage all of our learners. Our emphasis is on making every aspect of school enjoyable. When students enjoy what they do, they aspire to the challenges put before them.
It’s not all about the classroom. We are proud of the variety of enrichment activities we offer students. From sporting pursuits including swimming, running, rugby, netball and football, to drama club, rock school or crafts, there is something for everyone.
I was amazed at how well Southmoor has helped my son settle into his first year. Year 7 Parent

CHILDREN GROW UP TO BECOME
It’s about much more than the eighteen-year-old who leaves us. It’s about what happens next. Our aim is to educate for life. We want to create a generation of adults who can look after themselves but who also care for others. We want to equip young people with the skills to be good friends, supporting parents, community members and global citizens.
Caring, supportive, excellent teaching, empowering with great communication ... the list continues. I cannot praise Southmoor enough! Parent

SETTING THE STANDARD Students have a unique advantage in that when they complete their GCSEs they can choose to stay with us and become part of Sunderland’s Best Achieving Sixth Form. Perhaps it’s because of this growing reputation that our Sixth Form is accepting an increasing number of students from schools across the area. However, only Southmoor students and those from Sandhill View Academy are guaranteed a place (subject to achieving the necessary grades). The Sixth Form at Southmoor provides students with a culture of learning as well as excellent curriculum and information assessment. We prepare students for the wider elements of learning, preparing them as a whole person; a person who is positive, engaged and community minded.
The teachers and staff at the Sixth Form really helped me to go on to achieve the results that I needed. I couldn’t have done it without them.
