Even if someone can’t sew, but still would like to get involved by giving a donation, they can be assured, said Shull, that all money goes to either making or shipping a quilt to a sick child. “We have no overhead, except for the fabrics, labels, bags and shipping,” he said. “People donate money to many wonderful charities, but they know when donating money to Kindquilts, the money goes to a quilt and helps an individual directly.” So far, Kindquilts has partnered with such organizations as Urban Outfitters and the LPGA Shoprite Classic. Kindquilts is looking for committed groups of sewers to take on 10 or more sewing kits. It’s important, said Shull, if someone knows of a seriously-ill child to contact Kindquilts, so a handmade quilt can be sent to them. This unique nonprofit organization tries to lift the spirits of sick children by sending them a patchwork quilt, handmade by an anonymous donor. “This quilt represents a group of individuals who through their love and compassion, comfort individuals in need,” said Dean Shull, one of the founders of the organization. While he admits he can’t cure the sick, his group strives to “warm their hearts and souls with a tangible gift of love and care during a time of physical distress.” In order for someone to start on their journey of making a handmade quilt for a seriously-ill child, an individual or a group of sewers will first have to get a free kit from Kindquilts, that’s filled with different fabrics, a label and quilting instructions.
