on teen drug use planned

By Jesse Buchanan Record-Journal staff

A grizzly bear is taking shape at an East Street home as chain saw carver Jared Welcome works on what remains of a large oak tree. The Hamden resident, a part-time carver, said his goal is to be the best in the state.

By Jesse Buchanan Record-Journal staff

On July 2, Welcome’s chain saw roared and chips flew as he formed the bear’s legs and feet from the 15foot tall tree trunk. When finished, the bear will be standing on its hind legs atop the lower portion of the trunk carved to look like stones. With this work, there’s no room for errors.

A nonprofit will hold focus groups to learn how young people believe substance abuse can be prevented. “We want to hear directly from them what we can do to help them stay away from drugs and alcohol,” said Kim Selvaggi, executive director of LISA Inc. “What do they need to say no to drugs and alcohol?”

“You get one shot,” Welcome said. “I love the pressure of it.” East Street residents Katie and Michael Spalter said they saw Welcome’s work at the Durham Fair and asked him to create a realistic and mean-looking grizzly bear from the remainder of a tree in their front yard. The oak had been cut down as part of Eversource’s tree-trimming work near power lines.

Carmine Votino and family, owner of CV Tool Company, and Frank Fragola and family, owner of Fragola Performance Systems, donated money for fireworks.

Barbato, who will perform with eleven others in matching outfits, said the traditional folk dance is often featured at street festivals in Italy. A professional dancer in Sorelle d’Italia choreographed it for the festival.

“Both families are both long-time supporters of the festival,” Miceli said. The festival’s goal is to continue Italian traditions and heritage. Antonietta Barbato, president of Sorelle d’Italia, said a dozen members of her group will perform the tarantella dance this year on each day of the festival.

With a donation from two local families, festival publicist Dawn Miceli said this year ’s festival will include fireworks on Friday evening. The other two Republicans vying for the nomination are New Britain Mayor Erin Stewart and Darien First Selectwoman Jaymee Stevenson, who both garnered enough support during the May convention to qualify for the primary. [Editor's note: The RecordJournal has extended invitations to all Democratic and Republican candidates to appear on an episode of the podcast.] While the lieutenant governor has very few defined roles, Markley said his legislative experience would also help him serve as a liaison between the governor and the legislature. He also wants to use the office as a “business protection agency” that would help companies resolve problems

He noted that he has increased his margin of victory in each of his three re-elections. “I’ve done it not by hiding my beliefs, but by convincing people of them,” he said. “I think it’s moved voters in my district — I think I’ve, to some extent, recalibrated their thinking on these issues.” Markley, who helped organize a 1992 rally to oppose the implementation of the income tax, remains opposed to tax increases. He said the state will need to impose tax cuts to get its budget in balance, and look to encourage economic growth as a way to bolster tax revenues.

He didn’t offer specific tax cuts, other than to say a Republican administration would need to find efficiencies, but he added any candidate promising an acrossthe-board cut is “a little naive about the function of state government.”

COMMENTARY

Reefer worries hound legalization The situation with medical marijuana dispensaries is beginning to look like that of term limits for politicians, as in term limits are great for the other guy’s candidate — a dispensary is great for the other guy’s neighborhood. Unease about medical pot shops has been evident in Southington, where opponents have put pressure on town officials to keep marijuana away. This puts a unique pressure on planning and zoning panels ruling on applications. The decisions one way or the other need to be based on regulations, not on how someone gauges the threat of marijuana. “We’ve gotten lots of emails, we’ve gotten lots of communication from these (anti-drug) organizations,” Michael Del Santo, the chairman of Southington’s Planning and Zoning Commission, said recently.

“We get it, drugs are bad. In this position we have a job to do … We have to follow our regulations.” The situation is hardly unique to Southington. The New York Times recently reported on similar resistance in other states at the local level, where “would-be dispensary operators routinely encounter layers of regulations, if not moratoriums or outright bans, as well as wary landlords and angry neighbors.”

al are warming to marijuana, with half of the states approving it for medical purposes and nine, plus Washington, D.C., legalizing it for recreational use. A survey in October showed that 61 percent of Americans feel pot should be legalized.

But even in states where marijuana has been legalized progress in taking it from idea to practice has been slow and far from trouble free. The Associated Press reports that while pot retail sales became “We are trying to educate local legal in Massachusetts on July communities that this pot is 1 (after a referendum vote apnot the devil coming,” Robert proved legalizing recreational N. Fireman, president and marijuana in November 2016) CEO of MariMed Advisors, no stores have been licensed told the Times. “All we really and few are expected to be are is a glorified CVS that’s anytime soon. “Local resishighly regulated and secure. tance and the lack of marijuaBut it’s not getting any easier na testing facilities required by on the real estate side.” law are factors cited for the As the Times noted, the resis- delay,” says the AP. tance runs counter to indicaAnd now you can legally postions that Americans in gener-

sess a small amount of marijuana in Vermont, but since there are no pot stores you either have to grow it yourself or continue, as the AP put it, “buying from illicit dealers.” California legalized cannabis for recreational use effective at the beginning of this year. In the months since, fears that that black market, which obviously has been around a lot longer, would undercut legalized sales have turned out to be true, providing, as the AP put it, “a buzzkill for those trying to play by the rules.” Not too long ago I found it encouraging that President Donald Trump was supporting, at least in talk, the idea of legalizing marijuana on the federal level. It would alleviate a major inconsistency, which I thought would be good since there’s such general support among Americans and because states have the right to

figure out things on their own. But for now, the current situation allows towns that choose to embrace the inconsistency a way out, which is what is happening in Wallingford. While other towns deal with medical dispensary applications, Wallingford has decided to just say no. “The town’s position is that we can’t permit something that’s not legal at the federal level,” said Town Planner Kacie Hand. What to make of it all? Well, for one, Connecticut is better off sitting on the sidelines when it comes to legalizing recreational use. It already has its hands full with medical dispensaries. SOUTHINGTONThe world will laugh a little less with the passing of Ali H. Eraybar. Aside from his family and friends, Ali loved music, cars, laughing, and a good cigar with his Jack & Coke. He tried to be a chemo ninja, but cancer had the upper hand. He lost his battle on Monday, July 2, 2018 at the Hospital of Central Connecticut in New Britain. His beloved pup, Thaddeus, will forever miss him, along with all who knew him. Ali was born in Istanbul, Turkey on July 29, 1966 and immigrated to this country in 1977. The once quiet and shy boy at New Rochelle High School grew into the outgoing, sarcastic, funloving man we all knew and loved in Southington, Conn. He worked for Cox Communications for 18 years. He is survived by his beloved, doting wife, Kierstin (Newell) Eraybar, of Southington, Conn.; and his daughter, Alyssa Eraybar, of Siler City, N.C. He was the son of Emel and the late Ercument Eraybar; and brother to Bedii Eraybar and Bulent Eraybar, who reside in Turkey.

Language From A1

On June 18, a minivan hit a pole on Enterprise Drive. Kearney and other firefighters who responded got into Engine 12 and arrived to find nine victims with varying injuries. Firefighters were immediately put to work caring for patients.

Collaborative Healthcare Collaborative Healthcare is a Professional Mental Healthcare Group consisting of a Psychiatrist, a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner and Licensed Clinical Social Workers, working together to provide the absolute best care for our patients.

Kearney tried to determine the injuries of a woman who didn’t speak English. “It was difficult with the language barrier to know how much sign language she knew,” Kearney said.

We provide mental health medication management, therapy and counseling, in a private, relaxed office setting. Common ailments requiring this group’s professional services are: • Anxiety • Dementia/Alzheimer’s • Depression • Sleeplessness • Feelings of loss/abandonment • Grief • Aggressive/Combative Behavior • Feelings of despair • Intellectually Disabled • Autism / Aspergers • Disinterest in daily activities once enjoyed • ADD / ADHD

Southington firefighter Sean Kearney used sign language to help a hearing-impaired victim on the scene of a motor vehicle accident last month. Dave Zajac, Record-Journal

He’s known sign language for nearly 30 years, using it to communicate with his brother, who is also hearing impaired. A hearing disability doesn’t necessarily mean someone knows sign language, though, and Kearney said an accident also can be disorienting. Despite the number of patients, Kearney said first responders were able to care for each patient.

“Everybody knew what needed to be done,” he said. Kearney used simple signs, asking the woman whether she was having trouble breathing, where she felt pain and other details. She and the others were transported to the hospital. The injuries ranged from minor to serious, said Southington Fire Department Battalion Chief Glenn Dube.

The basic tenet of earthing is that you will be able to receive beneficial energy from the ground when you are in direct contact with a natural surface. It’s called “grounding.â€? Here’s the scoop. Improvements planned for former men’s shop

Louis Martocchio, a local attorney, owns the former clothing shop at 1 Eden Ave. The store, the last of Southington’s men’s shops, closed in 2012. Martocchio said he put a new roof on the building when he bought it, made structural improvements and did environmental work. He’s considering whether to rent it as a single, nearly 4,000-square-foot space or divide it. He’s also commissioned architectural renderings of a new façade. Other developments in the area could affect the timing of Martocchio’s work on the building. Just behind his property, crews are working on a 64-unit, three-story condominium building on Forgione Drive. The future presence of residents within walking distance to other downtown businesses is a “great addition to that area,” according to Martocchio. “It’s certainly going to jump start the Eden avenue area,” he said. The parking lot just around the corner on Main Street near Dollar Tree could become municipal parking, Martocchio said, further attracting people to Eden Avenue. There’s also a plan under consideration to make the Derynoski School lot open to the public. “I was really waiting to see what was going to happen with the Derynoski parking lot and” the Dollar Tree lot, Martocchio said. A plan to allow public parking during certain hours at the rear Derynoski school lot

Chris Palmieri, Town Council chairman and a Democrat, wasn’t in favor of allowing it. “I think we heard the residents’ concerns loud and clear about mixing municipal parking with the school parking,” he said.

Palmieri was more in favor of the large lot nearby on Main Street becoming municipal parking. Local developer Mark Lovley and partner Anthony Valenti, a real estate broker from Newington, bought the 200 Main St. property last year. Lovley said he’s in preliminary talks with the town for a municipal lot arrangement. Similar agreements have been reached between

the town and other property owners in which the spaces are made public in exchange for the town maintaining the lot. Lou Perillo, the town’s economic development coordinator, also anticipates a tax abatement for downtown property owners.

will be aggressive with coming out with a future tax abatement for that area,” he said. Palmieri said the possibility of a downtown tax abatement came up at a council subcommittee meeting but hasn’t yet been discussed at the council level.

“I think the Town Council

Protein shake chain The Fresh Monkee plans to open its fourth location on Queen Street later this summer.

She opened her first store in Wethersfield four years ago. Flynn, a marathon runner, power lifter and EMT, was frustrated at the lack of real ingredients and the amount of sugar and fats in smoothies and shakes.

By Jesse Buchanan Record-Journal staff

The Fresh Monkee has locations in Wethersfield, Glastonbury and Berlin. Founder Judy Flynn said the company is working on getting permits and finishing renovations to a storefront at 405 Queen St.

Fresh Monkee coming to town

“I’d stop into a smoothie place and see them put in a powder, some sugars, if you could see what they were doing,” she said. “It’s super fake.” “When I’m trying to be aware, I want to be able to see what’s going in, I want it to be real food,” Flynn said. “I wanted something that tasted great, had protein as a basis, had the fiber in the fruits and vegetables and added in some healthy fats.” Almost every one of her shakes is protein based. They range from the healthconscious to more fun-ori-

ented, such as a shake with marshmallows, but Flynn said they all include real ingredients. Customers can watch their shake being created, customize it and ask questions along the way. All the restaurants have low counters and glass refrigerator doors. “I want everyone to see the ingredients going in for a reason,” Flynn said. Shakes come in sizes from 16 to 32 ounces, with the largest being the most popular as a meal replacement. According to Rubi Associates, the owners of the plaza at 405 Queen St., the addition of The Fresh Monkee fills the plaza. The shake place and Asian Taste, a sushi restaurant, replaced a jewelry store and cleaners recently, a company representative said. The plaza also is home to Nardelli’s Grinder Shoppe, Fancy Bagels and Villari’s Martial Arts Center. Flynn said the shop could open in late August or September, although she’s hoping to start the Southington location as early as possible. Tammy Williams, a town resident, will be general manager. jbuchanan@record-journal.com 203-317-2230 Twitter: @JBuchananRJ

COMMENTARY

To work with one’s own children is special By State Rep. Joe Aresimowicz

A single newsprint company has convinced our government to tax the paper that is used in newspapers, books and other publications. The rest of the industry opposes this new tax. Now, increased paper costs are threatening thousands of jobs in the printing and publishing industry. Is this how our trade laws should be used?

Abuse of Our Trade Laws Tell your representatives in Congress to stop the new paper tariffs

and protect American jobs.

202.225.3121

Will Kill American Jobs.

Questions surrounding the hiring of UConn football head coach Randy Edsall’s son Corey as an assistant coach has been in the news, as has my support for bipartisan legislation that clarified state law concerning family members working together. Obviously there is no stronger bond than the one between a parent and a child, and sons and daughters learning from and working together with their mothers and fathers is a wonderful, longstanding family tradition. From President Trump and his family in the White House, to my own son, Michael, assisting me with the Berlin High School football team, it is a relationship to c e l eb rate. Prior to Randy Edsall’s hiring, UConn sought and received an advisory opinion from the Ethics Commission that gave the OK on the circumstances of bringing on a family member as part of the staff. Six months later, with Edsall now officially head coach, Ethics issued a subsequent and conflicting opinion. UConn, represented by the Attorney General, appealed that ruling, which is currently in court. The judge has allowed Corey to continue in his position while the case is pending. After talking with coach Edsall at a high school awards banquet in January, also attended by Republican legislative leaders, we all felt the Ethics opinion conflicting with its earlier advisory opinion was both wrong and unfair. I offered to help and, after further discussion with my fellow leaders, we all agreed to support legislation clarifying state law

concerning the ability for higher education employe es’ immediate family members to work together. This included certain safeguards such as ensuring all decisions on compensation and promotion are made by non-family members. That bill unanimously passed the House of Representatives on May 4, the Senate on May 9, and was signed by the Governor on June 7. It is important to put this in context, in that it is current standard practice at UConn and other colleges to provide jobs for spouses of newly-hired professors who move here from other states. This makes a lot of sense if you want to be able to attract high quality candidates to your campuses of higher education. In addition, sons working with their fathers is very common throughout college football. For example, UMass head coach Mark Whiple has his son on his coaching staff, and former UConn head coach Skip Holtz learned his trade under his father, the legendary Lou Holtz. Furthermore, Corey Edsall is well qualified for his position. He was on the University of Colorado football staff for the previous two years, and interned with the New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles before that. He started as a student assistant with his dad at the University of Mar yland. Randy Edsall is a good guy, who we are all rooting for to improve the competiveness of our UConn Husky football program. I believe it is wrong to deny him the special opportunity to have his son be part of his dad’s team, and I was glad to h e l p.
