Southington Knights of Columbus to revive youth organization By Farrah Duffany Special to the Citizen

The local Knights of Columbus plan to reintroduce a youth organization that has been dormant for more than 40 years. The Columbian Squires program, coming this fall, will teach Catholic boys leadership and team-building skills, and how to model their lives after Jesus Christ. The Squires organization, for boys 10 to 18, will be sponsored by Isabella Council 15, the Southington unit of the Knights of Columbus, the Catholic fraternal benefits organization. Dan Valente, a member of the

Knights for the past five years, said he has been working with other members to launch the program in the fall. “They had a Squires group back in the mid- to late-’70s and it fell apart,” Valente said. “Our leadership has been talking in the last year about something to help the youth and specifically helping young men because of broken homes — it would be a good program.” The Columbian Squires program started in 1925 in Minnesota and is a part of more than 1,500 Knights of Columbus circles around the world, with about 25,000 members. The Southington youth organization will be

named the Father Matthew Hunt Circle 2603, in honor of the Rev. Matthew Hunt, the priest who brought the Knights of Columbus to Southington in 1885. Valente said in the early stages of the program the adults will guide the youth, and then they will be expected to make their own agenda and pick their own officers. Valente said he wants the members of the program to enjoy fun activities to bond and make friends in the community. He said hiking, rock climbing, canoeing and a ropes course are among the team-building activities planned. Photo courtesy of Barbara Pasha
