St. Paul salutatorian

Michael Petit, son of Michael and Erin-Nora Petit of Southington, has been named salutatorian for the St. Paul Catholic Petit High School Class of 2012, which will graduate in ceremonies at St. Joseph Cathedral on Friday, June 8. Petit has also been named a Summa Scholar by the Superintendent of the Office of Catholic Schools for the Hartford Diocese. Petit is president of the senior class, a member of the National Honor Society, and a musician selected to perform with the All-State Orchestra.

The following Southington residents have received their undergraduate degrees from Western Connecticut State University, Danbury. Emily R. Czywczynski, bachelor of science in music education; Erica M. Matzkevich, bachelor of arts in social work; Jillian Maria Botelho, bachelor of arts in psychology; Desiree L. Deprey, bachelor of science in nursing; Kristen M.

DiMartino, bachelor of science in justice and law administration; Allison B Gauthier, bachelor of arts in theatre arts; Brian M. Makles, bachelor of business administration in accounting; Jordan Marie Orfitelli, bachelor of arts in anthropology/sociology; Amanda L. Therrien, bachelor of arts in mathematics; Joseph O. Trujillo, bachelor of science in nursing.

Recent graduates Eastern Connecticut State University’s, Willimantic, 122nd Commencement took place at the XL Center in Hartford on May 15. Anthony Valentine DePaolo, of Southington, was awarded a bachelor of science degree in business administration during Salve Regina University’s, Newport, R.I., 62nd commencement on May 20. Manhattan College, Riverdale, N.Y., awarded Jacqueline Marie Marchetti, of Southington, a degree on May 20 for the 170th undergraduate commencement.

Honor society On April 18, 12 Eastern Connecticut State University, students were inducted into Alpha Mu Alpha, ECSU’s chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, the national honor society for history. The society promotes the study of history through the encouragement of research, good teaching, publication, and the exchange of learning and ideas among historians. Sylvie Chho, class of ‘13, of Southington, was one of the inductees. Chho’s major is History/American Studies.

New members The Alpha Iota Alpha Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa

at Tunxis Community College in Farmington announced its most recent membership inductees at an induction ceremony on April 27. Phi Theta Kappa is recognized by the American Association of Community and Junior Colleges as the official honor society of twoyear colleges. To achieve eligibility for PTK, a student must complete at least 12 hours of associate’s degree course work, earn a grade point average of 3.5 or higher and adhere to the standards of the Society. Throughout their enrollment, they must maintain high academic standing, generally a 3.25 GPA. The PTK chapter at Tunxis provides opportunities for leadership, college and community service, exchange of ideas and ideals, scholarly fellowship, and academic excellence. The new members of PTK are: Samantha Crowley, of Plantsville, Jane DeLuca, Marcin Dembrowski, and Naomi Lemire, all of Southington.
