Truckers say cost-cutting move to close rest area would compromise safety

SOUTHINGTON — A rest stop in Southington used by truck drivers seeking respite from the road would be shut down under Gov. Dannel P. Malloy’s midterm budget proposal, while other rest stops throughout the state would see changes.

Facing a half-billion dollar shortfall, the Democratic governor has called for a 5.75 percent reduction in state spending for the coming fiscal year. He is asking agency leaders, not legislators, to

“I don’t know how much this costs to run, but you see a lot of truck accidents. We’re tired, we don’t have a place to rest,” Mcintyre said.

Wallingford resident Jennifer Schnakenverg said rest stops next to the highway are more suitable for truck drivers and motorists than restaurants or stores located off the highway.

“It’s harder to find and you have to get off the exits,” she said. “This (I-84) isn’t a familiar area to me... they’re definitely convenient.”

There are private truck stops in Southington and Willington, operated by Travel Centers of America, but they can only be accessed by getting off Interstate 84.

Having easily accessible stops for truck drivers is a safety concern, Markley said.

“If you have one accident because of a tired driver, the savings would seem insignificant,” he said.

“I’ve been familiar with that rest area all my life, and it always seems to be heavily used.”

The rest area gives truck drivers a place to “pull over and nap,” Markley added.

“That seems like something you want to provide.”

Under Malloy’s plan, the only rest stops on Interstate 84 in Connecticut would be in Danbury — on the eastbound side near Exit 2 — and on the westbound side of Willington past Exit 70.

Kermit Miller, a truck driver at Randall Miller Co. Inc., stops at the rest stop in Southington each week to avoid evening traffic in the Hartford area.

His trip consists of a 14hour ride from Glade Spring, Virginia to Springf ield, Massachusetts.

“I use this one quite a bit because it’s an hour away from Springfield,” Miller said.

“If they close it, I’ll just have to keep going.”

The budget, presented Wednesday, calls for the closure of the rest stop just past Exit 28 on Interstate 84 in

Southington. A rest stop on the eastbound side of Interstate 84 in Willington and a welcome center in Westbrook would also close.

The proposal would reduce operations at all other rest stop locations in the state to two shifts. There are 30 DOT-operated rest stops in the state, mostly on Interstate 95. These proposed changes would save the state just under $1.2 million, according to Malloy’s budget proposal, which is put together by the state Office of Policy and Management.

In January 2015, the DOT awarded a $2.9 million contract for the renovation of the eastbound and westbound rest areas in Willington. The project was expected to be finished by November, and included renovations to restrooms, among other things.

It’s unclear if the rest areas slated to be shut down would remain closed permanently.

Officials from DOT and OPM didn’t respond to inquiries.

In 2013, the International City/County Management Association reviewed the fire department. The final draft included data on response times, showing faster response times and more consistent turnout for paid firefighters than for volunteers.

The report recommended the creation of a four- to six-volunteer duty crew for evening hours “for a more guaranteed response.” The crews would be rotated among volunteer stations.

Comparing the Southington Fire Department’s response time to national standards, the report found that Southington firefighters’ call response time was “within the parameters of the suburban benchmark.” That benchmark is a response time of no more than 10 minutes for 80 percent of calls.

Lounsbury said there’s been significant development in town recently and that a new study is warranted. She also wanted to know whether the study’s recommendations were fully implemented.

Dawn Miceli, a Democratic councilor, said she supports hiring two firefighters after talking with Clark. She doesn’t want to spend money on a study, saying there’s no

commission Chairman Michael Bunko said he has data to back up his request. The commission request is three firefighters fewer than the original request from Fire Chief Harold “Buddy” Clark.

Bunko said the four additional personnel would staff the Milldale fire station during the daytime workweek hours. Only the headquarters on North Main Street currently has career firefighters.

Town Councilor Cheryl Lounsbury, a Republican, said she would like to have the town commission a study before there is a significant expansion of the fire department. Four new firefighters might be required, she said, but she said councilors aren’t fire protection experts and need better information to make the decision.

“When there’s a request this big, we have to do the research ourselves,” she said.

“If we need them, I’m 100 percent behind that. But I don’t want to make a decision based on emotion.”

Lounsbury said she’ll ask Town Manager Garry Brumback to include money for the study in the 2016-17 budget. The hiring of new career firefighters could be considered the year after re-

Lounsbury said councilors also considered creating a volunteer coordinator position by offering a paid job to one of the volunteers.

That person could determine when volunteers are available to increase responses to calls.

She said better use of volunteers and career firefighters could answer the department’s concerns. She cited the example of a ladder truck she saw responding to a medical call.

“Are they deployed effectively?” Lounsbury said.

“There are ways to address it rather than hire full-time people.”

Republican Councilor Ed Pocock III said he’s concerned about the rift between volunteer and career department members. He’s reluctant to fund the four positions until conflict between the two groups has been solved.

Pocock said volunteers are opposed to the plan. Career fire officers wrote a letter to the chief and the commission in December asking for more career firefighters.

“Why are they divided by this?” Pocock asked. “I’ve got a lot of questions.”

There are also few efforts by the town to recruit more volunteers.

“They feel that they’re not utilized to their potential,” Urso said. “They feel like they’re being pushed aside.”

One of the recommendations in the 2013 study was to staff firehouses with volunteers. That recommendation was never implemented, Urso said.

Wallingford also has a combined firefighter system with volunteer and career members. Tim Wall, volunteer chief of the North Farms station, said there’s a national trend of declining participation in volunteer departments.

“You have to constantly recruit,” he said.

He said there’s no friction between the career and volunteer firefighters in Wallingford, but said it can exist.

“It depends on the leadership,” Wall said.

Brumback will prepare a budget and present it to the Board of Finance which can cut his budget but not increase it. John Leary, chairman of the board and a Republican, said board members will meet with the fire commission to learn the reasons behind their request.

Leary said the grand list hasn’t been completed and it’s unknown what state grants will be available.

“We don’t know what’s palatable,” Leary said.

Pestillo, a Southington High graduate and marching band alumnus, said sales days were scheduled in January this year in an attempt to avoid a loss of sales due to inclement weather.

Pestillo said he likes that the event â&#x20AC;&#x153;gets band members out into the community.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;I cannot believe how much work goes into this fundraiser,â&#x20AC;? said Chasse, whose stepdaughter is in the band.

Work began with planning sessions back in September.

Pestillo said he and Chasse, both in their first year at the helm of the fundraiser, benefited from delegating to others with experience in different aspects of the event to help get through the learning curve.

Pestillo, whose son, D.J., is in the band, said he believes an upcoming April band trip to Boston helped drum up support within the community.

Of course, a second straight SHS state championship and a fourth-place showing at the Nationals in November at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t hurt either.

By 10 a.m., Pestillo and his son were ready to hit the road with 88 sub deliveries with a goal of finishing by 3 p.m.

Proceeds from the event go into student accounts and points convert to a dollar amount that can be used to help pay for band expenses, such as travel expenses to competitions, uniforms and shoes.

In the future, the organizers may consider an online ordering system to allow residents who might not have received a door knock by a band member to participate and expand the eventâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s reach.

Local QU student plays part in primaries

Twenty Quinnipiac University students experienced the political process firsthand, campaigning for presidential candidates in New Hampshire as part of their coursework. For Tuesday’s primary, students knocked on doors and rallied for candidates outside polling stations.

Southington resident Christopher Bird campaigned for Republican Marco Rubio, while Alex Branzell, of Wallingford, worked for Democrat Hillary Clinton. Branzell, a 21-year-old political science and economics major, had the opportunity to meet Clinton briefly last week while working at the Democratic Town Hall debate. He said meeting Clinton allowed him to see her dedication firsthand.

“I’m as far left as (Bernie) Sanders is on many issues, however, I think Hillary has the experience and pragmatic nature to be able to navigate the American political system and actually

effect some of the change she is pushing for,” Branzell said.

On Tuesday morning Branzell was canvassing door to door for Clinton in Manchester, attempting to sway undecided voters in an uphill battle against the favorite, Sanders.

The biggest hurdle was the recent snowfall.

“The hardest thing is getting to some people’s doors because they don’t necessarily plow or shovel everything,” Branzell said.

In the afternoon, Branzell went to polling stations, holdings signs and talking to residents before they voted.

“A lot of statistics show some New Hampshire voters won’t make up their mind until the actual day of,” Branzell said.

Branzell said getting involved with the campaign has been an exciting experience and he hopes more young people will participate in the political process as the presidential race continues.

for young people to begin to get involved because we have such low voter turnouts in comparison to some of the other demographics,” Branzell said.

Bird, 28, returned from New Hampshire on Tuesday after campaigning for Rubio. The junior from Southington studies political science at Quinnipiac and said he supports Rubio because he comes from a working-class background.

“I like the fact that he has a unique background,” Bird said.

“He wasn’t born with a silver spoon so I think that would figure prominently in terms of how he would govern.”

Bird said he was able to meet Rubio briefly, describing the senator as well-spoken and likable.

“It was a really great experience. It was really cool to see him and actually shake his hand,” Bird said.

“I think that some of the things we did do matter and ground game is important,” Bird said.

The students campaigned as part of their studies for a public service learning course “Presidential Campaigns,” taught by political science professor Scott McLean. Students traveled to New Hampshire starting in November to work for a candidate.

“Every hour of experience in New Hampshire and serving in a presidential campaign is a significant learning opportunity that can have enduring effects and impart real experiences of communication, leadership and civic engagement,” McLean said. “Those are transferable skills that will endure throughout their lives.”

McLean said his students were present at a Trump rally in Manchester Monday night, which was packed despite the snowstorm. When Trump uttered an obscene word for “coward,” repeating the term after a female audience member had shouted it, McLean said the audience reacted positively.

“They screamed and yelled, they thought it was great,” McLean said. “It really optimizes Trump’s appeal. He will say things that no other politician will ever say, it may be a vulgar word, it may be which countries are against us, you never know what will come out of his mouth.”

Although none of his students chose to campaign for Trump, McLean said attending the rally was a great experience.

Health Mindful eating means trusting yourself Intuitive eating (also called mindful eating) is structured around the belief that people need to trust themselves enough to believe that they will eat what and how much food they need. When you eat intuitively, you use your internal cues for hunger, appetite and satiety to guide you. The truth is, only by eating what you truly want can you adequately nourish yourself and achieve optimal health – including a healthy weight.

After many years of working with people who want to lose weight, one thing I know for sure is that very few people are able to achieve lasting success with traditional weight loss diets. Research clearly shows that dieting doesn’t work. While you may lose weight initially when dieting,

there’s a good chance you will fail to keep it off, and may regain even more pounds than you lost. “Dieting” is a temporary attempt to lose weight and it often leads to an endless cycle of restriction, bingeing, and guilt. It’s all very negative.

Intuitive eating, on the other hand, is a positive supportive approach to eating using your body’s cues to guide you in deciding what, when, and how much to eat. It is centered on listening to your inner signals of hunger and fullness and responding accordingly.

Stop dieting and start eating consciously in a way that makes your body feel well.

Eating with intuition is different for every person, but the general as-

pect of listening to your body remains constant. In my practice, I find that more people are able to achieve their personal best weight with intuitive eating than with traditional dieting. I suggest you give it a try. These three steps will guide you in getting started.

1. Eat when you are hungry.

Watch for your body’s hunger cues as your signal that it is time to eat. Eat enough to feel satisfied and comfortably full, not stuffed. Balanced meals that include whole grains, protein foods, vegetables, fruits, dairy products, and healthy fats promote satisfaction and satiety.

2. Eat what you want.

If you don’t, you’ll likely feel deprived and find yourself overeating.

Restricting yourself from certain

foods may also keep you on the hunt for food whether you’re hungry or not. If you notice that what you want is always the richer choice, you may still be caught up in feeling deprived from years of dieting. Try compromising by using richer foods in smaller quantities.

3. Eat until you’ve had enough.

Cancer patient drivers needed The American Cancer Society’s Road to Recovery program is looking for volunteer drivers throughout Connecticut to transport cancer patients to and from their treatments. Many patients need daily or weekly treatment, often over the course of several months, and may be too tired or weak to drive themselves. Museum hosts beer sippin’ event

NEW BRITAIN — New Britain Museum of American Art is gearing up for a night of craft beer sampling, artwork, live music, and crafting at its third annual Craft Sippin’ in New Britain event.

When guests arrive on Feb. 19, they will receive a souvenir glass to sample beer from 14 breweries.

“It’s a really great event because craft beer is so popular now,” said Museum shop manager Margaret Vaughan.

“It’s a tie in for us with the popular bar going scene but a chance for them to come look at artwork.”

Goodnight Blue Moon, a New Haven-based band, will

perform. The group features music with “folk influences and catchy modern melodies” according to the museum’s website. Besides live music, artwork, and craft beer, Vaughan said they will also be offering craft-making. “We will be making coasters and going around with whole bar, drinking theme,” said Vaughan.

For those that aren’t crafty, there will be a chance to play video games. Food will be provided by NoRA Cupcake Company in Middletown, the Whey Station in Middletown, and Agave Canteen of Hartford. Light snacks will also be served.

Southington winter parking ordinance The Southington winter parking ban has been implemented as follows, according to the Southington Police Department.

Winter parking ban - It shall be unlawful from Nov. 15 to April 15 for the owner or operator of a vehicle to allow such vehicle to stand or park on any street in the town for more than one house between the hours of 12 midnight and 6 a.m. on any given day.

Emergency parking ban The Chief of Police or such other person as may be designated by him to act in his absence or incapacity may terminate street parking on any or all of the streets in the town during a snowstorm or other emergency.

Maintenance of sidewalks - Whenever any sidewalk adjoining and fronting any land or premises shall be wholly or partially covered with snow, the owner, tenant or occupant of such adjoining premises shall cause such sidewalk to be made safe and convenient by removing such snow there from within 24 hours after the accumulation of the same thereon, and, should ice be accumulated on any sidewalk so that the same cannot be removed, such ice shall be covered with sand

or other substance within three hours after the accumulation of such ice.

Snow throwing - No owner, tenant, occupant or other individual shall throw or cause to be blown by machine or other implement snow into the rightof-way or sidewalks in the tow of Southington. Any person or company found to be in violation hereof shall be fined per violation.

Cul-de-sac residents shall be subject to consideration of the difficulties of snow removal in such areas by the agent who decides on the issuance of a violation.

Absent owner of premises - In the event an owner of premises is absent from the premises when an accumulation of ice or snow occurs such as needs to be removed from a sidewalk adjoining said premises, and the police are unable to reach the owner by phone or in person, then in said event the town of Southington may cause the snow or ice to be removed and lien the premises for the amount so expended in addition to any other remedy or fines as allowed by law. Fines are listed in the fines schedule 37-2 of the Town Ordinances and posted on the Town of Southington website.

IRS lists ‘dirty dozen’ tax scams

Aggressive and threatening phone calls by criminals impersonating IRS agents remain a major threat to taxpayers, headlining the annual “Dirty Dozen” list of tax scams for the 2016 filing season, according to the Internal Revenue Service.

The IRS has seen a surge of these phone scams as scam artists threaten police arrest, deportation, license revocation and other things.

The IRS reminds taxpayers to guard against all sorts of con games that arise during any filing season.

“Taxpayers across the nation face a deluge of these aggressive phone scams. Don’t be fooled by callers pretending to be from the IRS in an attempt to steal your money,” said IRS Commissioner John Koskinen. “We continue to say if you are surprised to be hearing from us, then you’re not hearing from us.”

The Dirty Dozen is compiled annually by the IRS and lists a variety of common scams taxpayers may encounter any time during

caller ID numbers to make it look like the IRS or another agency is calling. The callers use IRS titles and fake badge numbers to appear legitimate. They may use the victim’s name, address and other personal information to make the call sound official.

Five things the scammers often do but the IRS will not do. Any one of these five things is a tell-tale sign of a scam.

The IRS will never: • Call to demand immediate payment, nor will the agency call about taxes owed without first having mailed you a bill.

• Demand that you pay taxes without giving you the opportunity to question or appeal the amount they say you owe.

• Require you to use a specific payment method for your taxes, such as a prepaid debit card.

• Ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone.

• Threaten to bring in local police or other law-enforcement groups to have you ar-

rested for not paying.

If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS and asking for money, here’s what you should do: If you don’t owe taxes, or have no reason to think that you do: • Do not give out any information. Hang up immediately.

• Contact TIGTA to report the call. Use their “IRS Impersonation Scam Reporting” web page. You can also call 800-366-4484.

• Report it to the Federal Trade Commission. Use the “FTC Complaint Assistant” on FTC.gov. Please add “IRS Telephone Scam” in the notes. If you know you owe, or think you may owe tax: • Call the IRS at 800-8291040. IRS workers can help you.

CHARLESTOWN, R.I. — James Liguori Sr., 86, died Friday, Feb. 5, 2016, at South County Hospital in Wakefield, R.I., following a long illness.

He leaves his wife of 63 years, Dolores (Trotta) Liguori; brother, Robert, of Bowie, Md.; son, James Liguori and wife, Rhonda, of Irvine, Calif.; daughter, Diane Liguori; son, Thomas Liguori; daughter, Karen Brown and husband, Allan, of Dallas, Texas; five grandchildren; and many close friends. He was predeceased by his brother, Dr. Philip Liguori, of Southington.

Born in Southington, and a longtime resident of Kensington, he attended Central Connecticut State University, and received a master of science degree in education from the University of Connecticut. A dedicated educator, he taught elementary school through high school in Southington and Hartford, and was the principal of Hatton School in Southington from 1972 until his retirement in 1987.

A public memorial service will be held at St. James Chapel in Charlestown, R.I. on Saturday, Feb. 13, at 10 to 11 a.m. Burial will be private.

Many phone scams use threats to intimidate and bully a victim into paying.

They may even threaten to arrest, deport or revoke the license of their victim if they don’t get the money.

Opinion Zika virus no longer a distant problem Just a few short days ago, talk of the Zika virus, which is linked to thousands of babies being born with underdeveloped brains and heads, primarily in Brazil and throughout Latin America, seemed like a distant problem.

But that’s no longer the case.

More than 30 cases of the Zika virus have now been reported in the continental U.S. According to the World Health Organization, the time from exposure to Zika, to showing symptoms of the virus, is likely to be a few days.

And the symptoms, which last from two to seven days, include fever, skin rashes, conjunctivitis, muscle and joint pain, malaise and headache.

With 12 cases of the mosquito-borne illness detected in Florida recently, Gov. Rick Scott declared a health emergency in five counties in his state.

Aside from one case, in Texas, Americans who contracted the virus did so while traveling to affected countries.

However, a patient in Dallas was determined to have contracted the Zika virus here in the U.S.; through sexual contact with a person who recently returned from Venezuela.

Making matters worse, Brazilian officials are being accused of hoarding disease data and biological material in regard to Zika.

“An Associated Press report revealed that international health officials were frustrated at Brazil’s refusal to share enough viral samples and other information to answer the most worrying question about the outbreak: Whether the disease is truly causing a spike in babies born with abnormally small heads.”

Feeling the heat, presumably, Brazilian officials now say they’re sending a set of samples related to the Zika outbreak to the U.S. Zika’s march is unsettling to see, of course, particularly for pregnant women or those hoping to become pregnant.

And women in those situations are being urged not to travel to Caribbean and Latin American countries.

Meanwhile, mosquito repellents are flying off shelves as people attempt to keep the pests at bay.

Unfortunately, it appears there’s not much else we can do.

YMCA people and programs celebrated The 87th Annual Dinner Meeting of the Southington-Cheshire YMCA held at the Aqua Turf Club Feb. 3 was the place to be if you wanted a break from the cold. Here you could enjoy the warm presence of more than 300 friends and supporters of the YMCA and a highly spirited welcoming reception from happy Y staffers.

The audience was immediately impressed with a series of upbeat speakers including Al Terzi, John Myers, Joe Eddy, Mark Pooler, Catherine Myers, Dr. Mary Yuskis, Melissa Sheffy and many others.

Speakers provided brief annual business reports, elections of directors and, as told by Al Terzi, some deeply moving human stories that are part of the life and fabric of the YMCA. Catherine Myers presented the Youth Development Award to Dave Kanute and Anna Satterfield.

YMCA Board Secretary Dr. Mary Yuskis presented the Social Responsibility Award to Board of Education member Terri Lombardi whose volunteer work spans 10 years of service to the YMCA. She has served as secretary, vice president and president of its board. In addition, she was recognized for her work on the Forever in Blue Jeans, Membership and International Committees. Not only that, Lombardi has been active with community service on the St. Dominic School PTO, the St. Thomas Apple Harvest Booth and Annual Auction and as a SHS soccer and basketball booster.

Also receiving the Social Responsibility Award were the Giving Back Girls and founders Erin and Emily Gibney, for their energetic support of many community service programs including the Back Pack programs to get kids ready for school each year.

The first is Alex’s Lemonade Stand supporting research and care in pediatric cancer. This year 400 stu-

dents participated and their Apple Harvest Booth is now a fixture. They’ve raised an amazing $80,000 through the years.

The second is STEPS (Southington’s Town-wide efforts to Promote Success) which has benefited by his far-reaching work in ABC, Asset Building Classrooms.

Nyerick was one of the early leaders in the coalition and his work is evident in the

classrooms.

Through all the YMCA offers, social responsibility comes though in many ways.

There’s the organization’s Togetherness program, initiated last November and the Race4-Chase Triathlon whose finals, again, will be run in August at Camp Sloper.

There are a host of events year-round supporting vital community services such as Bread for Life, veterans, se-

nior citizens and our youngest children.

Municipalities would receive less state aid than anticipated under Gov. Dannel P. Malloy’s proposed budget, a point of concern for local and state officials.

The Democratic governor’s midterm budget would reduce municipal aid by about $50 million as part of a proposal to cut state spending by 5.75 percent next fiscal year.

But overall aid to municipalities will increase in fiscal year 2017, which begins July 1, due to changes in how the state shares sales tax revenue.

Still, any deduction is a concern, especially since revenue sources are getting “scarcer and scarcer” at the municipal level, said Wallingford Mayor William W. Dickinson, Jr. “When money is not coming

Teen raises money for schools in need

Talking to Ishaan Patel, who started his own nonprofit, spent a week in New York learning about Wall Street and finances, and has future plans to build a school in India, you would think you were talking to a middle-aged, successful businessman. Here’s the fun fact: He’s only 13 years old.

Over the summer Ishaan, an eighth-grader at Kingswood-Oxford School in West Hartford and a Southington resident, decided to start his own organization called Planting Pencils, which helps raise money or donations of school supplies for under-funded schools around the world.

“Education is a huge thing

that’s lacking around the world,” said Ishaan. “People focus on helping with the basics like food and water, but if we educate them they can supply it.”

The idea came to Ishaan after listening to his aunt, Hema Shah, and her travels.

She often volunteers to help out those in need in other countries and said how many children didn’t go to school because the means weren’t available.

One trip Shah asked for school supplies which Ishaan helped to get. When Shah showed pictures of the children’s reaction, Alpa Patel, Ishaan’s mother, said she could see Ishaan was inspired to do more.

The figure is an estimate, and it’s unclear if this payment will actually make up for the city’s lost tax revenue, City Manager Lawrence J. Kendzior said.

Calculations must be adjusted based on Malloy’s proposal, released Wednesday.

The additional aid provided through sales tax revenue is “significantly important,” Kendzior said. “Hopefully that actually makes it through the budgetary process, because it sort of makes up for some of the other cuts.”

State Sen. Dante Bartolomeo, D-Meriden, said Wednesday she had concerns about changes to municipal aid.

“The proposals, the details will evolve,” said Bartolomeo, a member of the legislature’s Appropriations Committee, which has cognizance over the budget. “But I genuinely have concerns about the municipal aid aspects.”

One issue with the governor’s proposal, Kendzior said, is that in recent years, the state has already reduced payments in lieu of taxes to municipalities.

Such reductions have long been an issue in Cheshire.

Under state law, the town is required to receive 100 percent property tax reimbursement for the prison property off

Route 10. But that hasn’t happened, said state Rep. Mary Fritz, D-Wallingford, whose district includes Cheshire.

Over the years, the payment to the town has been reduced by nearly 60 percent, she said.

“I think we need all the money we can get,” Fritz added. “Aid is a big deal for both my towns. I don’t like to see it cut at all.”

State Sen. Joe Markley, R-Southington, also a member of the Appropriations Committee, said he isn’t confident the municipal aid figures proposed by Malloy “are going to be the final numbers.”

“My suspicion and hope is they won’t be any worse,” he said.

While Malloy discussed tackling long-term budgetary issues last week, the Democratic majority “will be reluctant to stick with him,” Markley said. “What I’ve told municipal leaders, whenever I’ve had the chance, is next year’s budget is the real problem.”

The state is facing an estimated deficit of over $1 billion in 2017-18. Malloy’s budget proposal calls for across-theboard spending cuts of around 9 percent next year.

“They are giving me the opportunity to play quarterback and work for a spot, but they told me I could see the field earlier if I took the other position,” Rose said. “It’s for me, really. I don’t want to ride the bench. I want to impact the program as early as possible. For them to say that just grabbed my attention.”

Rose was a three-year starter with the Knights. He was tight end/slot receiver on the 2013 state championship team, then took over at quarterback for the graduated Stephen Barmore and led the Blue Knights to a state title repeat in 2014.

He was aboard for Southington’s school record 31game winning streak, which was snapped by Darien in this year’s Class LL semifinals.

At QB as a junior and senior, Rose completed 65.6 percent of his passes (364for-555) for 5,897 yards and 87 touchdowns with just 15 interceptions. The 87 touchdowns rank as the Southington career record and fifth on the state’s all-time list.

Southington football coach Mike Drury said Rose just wants to get on the field and play.

“We will play where his skill set fits best,” Drury said.

“They are looking at some tight end and H-Back stuff and moving him around on the offensive side of the ball.

He’s excited for that. He will be good at that. As a sophomore, he played that position for us and he was great.”

SOUTHINGTON — Jasen Rose was grinning ear to ear Wednesday, Feb. 3 as he signed his National Letter of Intent to the University of Connecticut on National Signing Day. Flanked by his parents, Tim and Dawn, and surrounded by friends and family in a ceremony in the Southington High School library, Rose officially put pen to paper and fulfilled a verbal commitment he made to UConn after choosing Husky Blue over Syracuse Orange in the same location in September.

“It’s crazy to think that I’m no longer a Southington Blue Knight and now I’m a UConn Husky,” Rose said. “It’s crazy to think that now I’m not only playing for a town in Connecticut, but I’m playing for the whole state. It’s very cool.”

One of the big attractions that led Rose to choose UConn over his many suitors was a chance to play quarterback, the position at which he starred the past two years in high school, at the collegiate level.

That’s changed to a large degree. While Rose will still have the opportunity to compete at QB, he’s been told by UConn coaches that he has a better chance to play sooner as a tight end, similar to the slot position he played in Southington as a sophomore.

“I’m probably going to be moved to a F-tight end. It’s almost like a hybrid tight end,” Rose said. “It’s more of a receiving tight end, but you have to put your hand in the dirt and block.

“I think I will be able to transition. I’ve been a quarterback my entire life up until my sophomore year and I transitioned to play receiver for one year. So, hopefully, I can do the same next year.”

“They were really excited that it was finally official and finally out of the way and they don’t have to worry about me leaving, which wasn’t ever a thing,” Rose said. “They are excited because the class we have coming in is a very special class and they know what we have to work for.”

Among the state recruits heading to Storrs is a CCC rival, Glastonbury Keyion Dixon, who played quarterback in high school but is not projected to play that position at UConn.

“It’s a very big step up,” said Rose, who is 6-foot-3, 220 pounds. “I go from being bigger than most of the kids on the field [to] now everyone’s going to be bigger than me.”

Sly move: Thomson inks with Red Foxes Southington linebacker heading to Marist by way of Choate Rosemary Hall

SOUTHINGTON — Matt Thomson had done plenty of winning in his high school and prep football career. Now the linebacker hopes it translates to more success at the collegiate level.

The Southington product officially signed with Marist, a Division I Football Championship Subdivision program, on Wednesday, Feb. 3 at Choate Rosemary Hall.

After helping the Blue Knights win back-to-back Class LL state crowns in 2013 and 2014, Thomson opted for a post-grad year with the Wild Boars.

The decision turned out to be a good choice.

Thomson’s championship run continued at Choate. A starting outside linebacker, Thomson helped the Wild Boars complete their second straight 10-0 campaign that culminated with a second straight New England A Division championship.

Eleven members of the 2015 Choate team, including Thomson, are going on to

play college football.

“People told me that doing a post-grad year at Choate would be the best decision I will ever make,” Thomson said. “I have found that statement to be true. I came here expecting to grow as a student and an athlete, and I have.”

Thomson indeed grew as an athlete. He now goes 6-2, 220 pounds.

Academically, Thomson said taking the prep school path acclimated him to a college-type environment and allowed him to perfect his study habits.

He also furthered his love for studying game film.

Thomson will often take a stroll a couple of houses down the road and dissect game film and look for opposing tendencies with head coach L.J. Spinnato, who doubled as the Boars outside linebacker coach.

“I got to play with two great programs and for two great coaches,” Thomson said. “Spinnato had the same blue-collar toughness that I experienced at Southington.

Although Marist seemed to be the obvious choice for Matt Thomson all along, he had other choices in Trinity, New Haven, Bates and Holy Cross. A mid-January visit to Marist’s Poughkeepsie, N.Y. campus sealed the deal.

Thomson has been on the Red Foxes radar for a while.

The connections were plentiful. Thomson’s father, Rob, was an All-American defensive back at Syracuse. While there, Thomson played under a coaching staff that included graduate assistant Jim Parady.

Parady is now the head coach at Marist.

“We will be the first father-son combination that he has coached,” Matt Thomson said. “Coach Parady was the graduate assistant secondary coach and my dad was the safety. He told me that he loves my dad and said what a hard worker he was. I want to carry on that reputation.”

SOUTHINGTON — After two years of obscurity at the junior varsity level, midfielder Jake Testa emerged as one of the top scorers for the Southington boys lacrosse last spring.

He tied for second on the team in total points with 19 goals and five assists. He also scooped up 37 ground balls.

Testa’s efforts during the season, combined with his performance at various showcase events, resulted in college interest.

After mulling over his options, Testa has accepted an athletic scholarship and signed a National Letter of Intent to play next year at The College of St. Rose, a Division II program in Albany, N.Y. “It was a long process,”

The Red Foxes were 5-6 last season and finished fifth in the Pioneer League.

Testa, who hopes to study business, said he felt comfortable at a smaller school with smaller classrooms.

As for his niche on the lacrosse field, Testa said he never expected to make such a big impact as a junior.

“I just thought I was going to be one of those players to go in when they needed me, not when the game was on the line,” Testa said.

Rivera, after receiving a forfeit against Berlin, pinned at 3:35 wrestling 285 against Windham and in 3:04 wrestling 220 against Waterford.

Wagner (120), Calo (126) and Abacherli (132) wrestled at their usual weights before

bumping up a class against were the seniors honored on Waterford.

Rams continue to thrive

We were up north last weekend – at last – and found conditions good, if a little limited, in central Vermont.

So far this is an interesting winter with more snow along the coast than on the mountains. We drove home from Killington on Monday and ran into snow in Springfield, Mass. We were bringing the grandkids home to Mystic and the closer to the water we went the tougher the driving became. El Nino has turned the ski industry upside down.

Like the U.S. Mail, the ski season must go on, and racers raced last week and weekend.

Cheshire and Southington high schools both hit the gates last week, but on separate days.

O n Tu e s d ay, Fe b. 2 , Cheshire started the week with a CISL race at the local hill. The Rams, led by Anders Norback, finished seventh out of the 12 boys’ varsity teams

in the race and fifth in Class L. Norback finished eighth overall and fourth in his class.

Aiden Murphy finished 15th and Andrew DePalma came in at 28th out of the 81 racers at the start.

On the girls course there were nine teams in the race and the ladies from Cheshire came in fifth overall in the team standings and fifth among Class L schools.

Meghan Diamond led the way for the Rams in sixth place out of the 71 girls on varsity teams. Katie Tomko was the next Cheshire racer, in 19th place, followed by Samantha Bellina in the 35th spot.

With a storm on the way last Thursday, Feb. 4, the Blue Knights hit the trail at Mount Southington and the boys, led

by Tyler Coenraads, finished eighth out of 12 teams and fourth in L class.

“He had 40 goals as a sophomore, but dealt with a groin injury. He’s very good.” Chase said.

“Majchrzak is a midfielder who played attack for us last year. He’s very strong in stick-handling and is probably our best athlete besides Jake. And Jon, we are expecting a strong season from him.

He will fit in very well at Elmira. All four of the guys are natural leaders.”

It didn’t take long for him to realize he was no secondary player.

“In the first game against Cheshire, that’s when everything took off,” Testa said. “I had two goals, and one was the game-winner in overtime. Ever since then I knew I would have a big role with the program and I can’t wait for this year.”

Testa stands six feet, weighs 185 pounds. He was a tight end this fall for the Southington football team.

His attributes on the lacrosse field are strength, speed and size.

“When I go up against bigger kids, I’m faster and the smaller players I’m able to overpower.”

Plans for subdivisions spark debate

A new proposal for subdivisions has divided landowners and open space advocates over whether the town should require new housing developments to include 20 percent open space.

Town Planner Rob Philips said the proposed regulations would allow flexibility in how open space would be preserved. The commission could use conservation easements to maintain the undeveloped land, deed it to the town or have it controlled by a homeowners’ association.

“They can choose the means of preservation,”

Philips said.

An easement might be the best method when the parcel isn’t connected to other areas of open space. The developer could also pay a fee in lieu of open space.

The current open space requirement is one acre for every 25 lots. Subdivisions under 10 lots are exempt but wouldn’t be under the new proposal.

Prominent developers, engineers and property owners spoke against the change for hours at a Planning and Zoning Commission hearing on the subject Feb. 2.

They said it would most harm those who’ve invested in property and won’t be able

to sell their land for the expected price.

Commission Chairman Michael DelSanto said he couldn’t comment on the proposal since it was still pending. The measure came from a PZC subcommittee.

DelSanto said the commission “got a lot of great information” during the Feb. 2 public hearing.

Dawn Miceli, a Democratic

town councilor and member of the open space subcommittee, said the subdivision change could allow the town to continue acquiring open space.

“As our land dwindles in Southington, this seems to be the Plan B,” Miceli said.

“It’s the natural next step.

Preserving open space is the number one thing we’ve been hearing for months now

as we’ve been discussing the Plan of Conservation and Development.”

Questions about lifestyle, work schedule, home life, personality traits, and more help to match an animal at a local shelter with people looking to adopt. After two years in the making, the website launched on Jan. 13.

“Currently we have nine organizations from Connecticut participating, but that number grows every day,” said Ryan Vayo, president of Pet Harmony LLC, via email.
