Osteoporosis/ Osteopenia exercise classes The Southington Community YMCA, 29 High St., is offering a new class, Osteoporosis/Osteopenia exercise, that focuses on spinal lengthening and strengthening, improving core strength and overall muscle toning. The class is presented in cooperation with Community Physical Therapy in Southington. Classes meet twice a week and are taught by Meeks Method trained instructors. These classes are appropriate for all fitness levels and are especially beneficial for those with chronic back pain and/or some form of postural dysfunction. Fall program registration Registration for the Southington Community YMCA’s Fall 2 program session begins for full members on Saturday, Oct. 6, at 8 a.m. Program member registration begins on Saturday, Oct. 13, at 8 a.m. The Fall 2 program session runs from Monday, Oct. 29, through Sunday, Dec. 23. Columbus Day fun day On Monday, Oct. 8, YMCA Camp Sloper is hosting Columbus Day Fun Day for kindergarten through eighth-grade. Drop off is between 6:30 and 9 a.m. with pick-up by 5:30 p.m. The day will be dedicated to experiencing the wonders of nature that are on, and around, YMCA Camp Sloper. A child will enjoy a day of age-appropriate hikes, nature hunts, and fort building activities, all built around the structure of a day of summer camp. If the child is in fourth-grade or older, he/she will have the opportunity to participate in a hike to the top of the Black Trail at YMCA Camp Sloper. Early childhood program space The Southington Y is announcing space available in all early childhood programs for 2012-13. Early Childhood options include preschool, nursery school and creative child. Children must be fully toilet trained and out of pull ups and turning three before Dec. 31, to register. Preschool is an all-day program located out of the YMCA Learning Center. Full and part week options are available. Children are divided into classrooms according to age. This program follows the Connecticut Preschool Assessment Framework. Nursery School is a part day part week program. Space is available in the Monday, Wednesday, Friday afternoon class running 12:15 to 2:45 p.m. for 4year-olds. Space is available in the 3year-old class running Tuesday and Thursday. Classes are available in the morning 9 to 11:30 a.m. or 12:15 to 2:45 p.m. in the afternoon. This program also follows the Connecticut Preschool Framework Assessment. Creative Child is a program running Monday and Wednesday mornings from 9 to 11:15 a.m. Children participate in crafts, group games and swimming. Parents or an adult must accompany children during the visit. Families will meet the teachers and see the classroom. All forms are available at the YMCA Learning Center and online at www.sccymca.org. Livestrong at the YMCA The Southington-Cheshire Community YMCA, 29 High St., has available openings for the Livestrong at the YMCA program, a free, 12-week small group fitness program designed for adult cancer survivors under guidance of specially trained health and wellness staff. Participants do not need to be a current member of the YMCA or Southington resident. Program will begin the week of Oct. 8. Morning class will be held Wednesdays and Fridays from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Evening class will be Mondays and Wednesdays from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The program is designed to help those affected by cancer to regain strength, endurance, and function as well as emotional support and self-esteem. Class format consists of cardio, strength, and flexibility segments and is custom-tailored for each individual. Each participant is given a free 12-week full YMCA membership and may use any of the Y’s facilities.
