Hospital’s administration trio looks forward to future growth Plans to be premier facility with best doctors, focus on community

About six months ago, there was a change in the administration of Elmhurst Hospital, when Pamela Dunley was named CEO of the local healthcare facility. She replaced Mary Lou Mastro, MS, RN, FACHE, who became System CEO of Edward-Elmhurst Health, effective July 1.

Current CEO Pam Davis will retire as of June 30, so she and Mastro are serving as System Co-CEOs through June 30.

Along with Dunley’s appointment, two other executives were promoted at Elmhurst Hospital as of Jan. 1. They are Laura Eslick, MBA, PMP, FACHE who was named Chief Operating Officer, and Jean Lydon, RN, MS-MBA, AOCN, promoted to Chief Nursing Officer.

The Independent had a chance to sit down with all three ladies to ask them about what it will be like working together. The message was simple: “We’ve already been working together for a number of years,” Dunley said. “So we’re just happy to moving forward together into the future.”

After growing up in the Beverly neighborhood of Chicago, Jean Lydon and her husband have three children ages 25, 27 and 29.

“I want grandchildren,” she said with a laugh. “My son is getting married in the spring, so maybe then?!”

Lydon worked as an oncology nurse for 37 years but has now been in hospital administration for more than 20 years.

“I came here as manager of Oncology Services and worked with Pam for ten years,” she said. “The hospital is such that it can attract a good talent pool that can grow to meet the needs of the hospital. It differentiates us because it attracts highly talented people, which allows us to grow the talent pool.”

Her background is as a psych nurse, working at River’s Edge Hospital for 34 years as well as four psych clinics. She first came to Elmhurst Hospital because of her skills as a psych nurse; she also liked using a holistic approach to medicine.

Laura Eslick grew up in Hinsdale but has lived in Elmhurst for the past 20 years, working at Elmhurst Hospital during that time. She

was married in Ireland and has two sons, a junior at York High School and a junior at Marquette University.

While Eslick has worked for 25 years in the healthcare field, she has spent most of her time in administration due to her strong background in finance and project management.

“It’s been a mission to pair up the facility with business and clinical people, working together to provide the best quality, most efficient, and financially-lucrative treatment for our patients,” she said.

“We wanted to be a Planetree hospital and that worked out, then we wanted to be a Magnet hospital and made that happen, too,” she said. “These are all great accomplishments, but what does it all mean? All these things are steps toward making Elmhurst Hospital a better facility with a fully integrated campus that is financially solvent and has grown consistently since the beginning.

“We pride ourselves in being nimble, reacting quickly and re-

maining physician-focused, while keeping a community focus.”

“We hoped to remain relevant in the community following the merger [with Edward Hospital],” said Laura. “We didn’t want to lose sight of what made us a great hospital. We have significant regional competition, but the merger has been a good marriage for us. We have strong service lines, especially in fields like cardiac and orthopedic medicine. We want things to be strong for the patient. We don’t want them to worry about anything except getting well.”

Their favorite things Asked what they liked best about their positions, Pamela said she liked being with people and watching them grow.

“The first year, we had 35,000 patients, then 65,000 in the second year,” she said. “That shows we are growing. People are learning about us so they come here because they want to be treated by us. We’re seeing growth in our immediate care department and in new walk-in clinics.”

“I just want to make a difference in someone’s life,” replied Laura.

“My favorite thing is that I can have a significant positive impact on a patient’s care and experience,” said Jean. “I felt I was a good nurse, but in administration, you can do more for more people. Look at the professional growth in nursing and

Keeping the middle class strong Krishnamoorthi said the most pressing issue is, making sure we have a strong middle class.

“We want middle class people to keep growing and thriving,” he said. “We need to be aware of working families’ agenda on topics like equal pay for equal work, pregnancy leave, affordable child care and we need to strengthen Social Security and Medicare.”

He indicated that there may be an opportunity for an early buy-in to Medicare.

Transportation remains a necessary challenge When transportation came up, Krishnamoorthi said he was against defunding Amtrak because it is a viable form of transportation.

“We want to keep the trains,” he said. “We have to fund mass transit otherwise we will continue to be [heavily congested].”

He’s been working with the Surface Transportation Board to support finding a western access thoroughfare to O’Hare Airport, which has been on the table for several years now. The Elgin-O’Hare Expressway has been a bit of a joke.

“You know what they say, the Elgin-O’Hare goes neither to El-

gin nor O’Hare,” the Congressman said with a laugh. “That’s been a long-standing joke.”

The issue that brought the biggest round of applause was when someone asked about getting the details on Russia’s involvement, if any, in the November election.

Without releasing pertinent details, Krishnamoorthi said that investigation is indeed ongoing and that he is keeping an eye on it.

Solutions must be bipartisan “Businesses need to take a stand on things like infrastructure, tax reform, healthcare, etc.,” he said.

“But it has to be bipartisan. If we don’t approach things from a bipartisan standpoint, we’ll just continue to go back and forth, four years of this, then four years of that, and so on, with no real progress or solutions.

“There will never be a lasting solution unless it is bipartisan.”

He went on to say that progress on many issues has been delayed since Trump was elected.

“We were making progress in a lot of areas but we’re back-sliding a bit,” he said. “We need something to jolt us out of [complacency] and continue the fight.

“You cannot be silent, you can’t hope someone else will do it.”

Couple accused of stealing more than $200,000 from COD Bond set for two who allegedly ran financial aid fraud scheme

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin announced last week that charges had been filed against a Roselle couple accused of stealing more than $200,000 from the College of DuPage (COD) in an elaborate scheme involving financial aid fraud.

Cedric Ramey, 40, and Mary Allen, 37, both of 811 Shawnee Trail in Roselle, appeared in Bond Court on April 26, where Judge Dieden set bond at $1 million with 10% to apply for Ramey and $500,000 with 10%

to apply for Allen. Neither Ramey nor Allen is affiliated with the COD in any manner.

It is alleged that beginning in February, 2012, through May, 2014, the duo recruited friends to provide personal information that Ramey and Allen allegedly used to apply for admission to COD and for loans and grants from the Department of Education awarded through COD. It is further alleged that the recruits would then withdraw from the courses resulting in refunds of tuition

balances returned to them either via check made payable to the recruit or electronic deposit into the recruit’s bank account. It is also alleged that the recruits would then split the refund with Ramey and Allen. The couple’s alleged scheme began to unravel in 2013 when an individual reported that she had received a tuition bill from COD but she had never attended the college. An investigation led by the College of DuPage Police Department with assistance from the State’s Attorney’s Financial

Crimes Unit led to Ramey and Allen.

In all, it is alleged that the pair stole $205,580.

“Not only did the alleged actions of Mr. Ramey and Ms. Allen cost the College of DuPage hundreds of thousands of dollars, their actions may have also hindered other students with a legitimate need in their search of financial aid,” Berlin said.

A DuPage County Grand Jury returned a 20-count indictment against both Ramey and Allen. The most serious charge against each defen-

dant is Theft Over $100,000 From a School or Place of Worship, a Class X Felony. Their next court appearance is scheduled for May 22, in front of Judge Robert Miller.

Members of the public are reminded that this complaint contains only charges and is not proof of the defendants’ guilt.

The defendants are presumed innocent and are entitled to a fair trial in which it is the government’s burden to prove their guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

According to a release from DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Illinois State Police District 15 Commander Captain Robert Meeder, bond has been set Anthony Tillmon for a tow truck driver accused of fatally shooting the driver of a semitrailer truck following an apparent road rage altercation late last week. Anthony Tillmon, 34, of Lansing, appeared in Bond Court on the morning of April 26, where Judge Joseph Bugos set bond at $3 million with 10% to apply. Tillmon has been charged with one count of First Degree Murder. If convicted, he faces a possible sentence of up to natural life in prison.

It is alleged that while driving, Munoz and Tillmon were involved in some type of “road rage” incident and appeared to be yelling at each other. It is further alleged that shortly thereafter, near the I-294 Interchange, Tillmon pulled his vehicle alongside the driver’s side of Munoz’s semitrailer, pointed a handgun at Munoz and pulled the trigger, hitting Munoz three times as he was driving. It is further alleged that following the shooting, Tillmon exited the highway and sped away.

Berlin and Winfield Chief of Police David Schar announced last week that bond had been set for a former Central DuPage Hospital employee accused of taking a patient’s cellular phone and illegally sending sensitive, personal photographs from her cellular phone to his cellular phone.

Mark Luis, 33, of 783 Waterside Drive, South Elgin, appeared in bond court on April 28, where Judge Dieden set bond at $150,000 with 10% to apply. Luis voluntarily turned himself in to the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office earlier today.

It is alleged that on November 12, 2016, while at Central DuPage Hospital, the victim entered her password and used her cellular phone in front of Luis, who was a nurse at the hospital.

While at the hospital, the victim was not allowed to have her phone with her for a brief time and consequently the phone was left at a nurses’ station. It is alleged that Luis removed the phone from the nurses’ station, entered the victim’s pass-

word and sent more than sixty images and six videos of the victim to his personal cellular phone.

The alleged behavior was uncovered when the victim synced the phone to her iCloud account when she got home and discovered that numerous photographs and videos were allegedly sent from her phone to a phone number that she did not know and that all the images and videos were sent when the phone was not in her possession.

An investigation led by the Winfield Police Department with assistance from the State’s Attorney’s Office led to Luis. On April 19, 2017, Judge Richard Russo issued a $200,000 arrest warrant for Luis, who is charged with one count of Non-Consensual Dissemination of Private Sexual Images, a Class 4 Felony, and one count of Computer Tampering, also a Class 4 Felony.

His next court appearance is scheduled for May 8, 2017.

IC Catholic Prep’s Schergen named new school president

“I’m sure I will miss the athletics side of it,” he said. “But with the role I will be in, I still will need to be present in the athletics part of it. I’m going to be part of the committee that will hire the next athletic director. If I didn’t take this opportunity, something like this may never come around again. I feel confident in my abilities. I’m absolutely going to miss being athletic director, but that doesn’t mean I have to cut ties with other coaches and other athletic directors. Those relationships will continue.”

Schergen said the search for the school’s new athletic director has drawn great interest thus far.

“We’re aggressively moving to get someone hired,” he said.

“We’ve already had more than 20 resumes (as of late last week) and we’re drawing some real good interest. It’s exciting to see.”

IC Catholic Prep athletic director Tom Schergen recently was named the high-school’s new president.

Schergen succeeds interim president Amy Fahey and will begin his new position this summer. Last July, the school announced the decision to divide the principal and president roles to better support the future needs of the school.

“IC Catholic Prep is a place I really enjoy,” Schergen told the Independent. “If this is another way I can help the school continue on its upward trend and continue to grow, this is where I want to be.”

In his new role, Schergen will focus on the financial management of the school as well as other external aspects including development, alumni relations, communications, marketing and admissions.

Longtime principal Pam Lavar continues in her position.

“My main responsibility will be the external pieces,” he explained. “Pam runs the day-to-day of the school. I’ll focus on the external community piece with raising money and helping

Schergen said he’s thankful for the opportunity to lead IC Catholic Prep into the future.

“These opportunities don’t come along that often, if at all,” he said. “I’ve always said you have to take risks. I feel comfortable with the community I work in here. The school is strong, the board of directors is very supportive. I know I will have the support walking in. I have the support of Pam and the board and of Father Tom. It’s important to have that support.”

Schergen has been IC Catholic Prep’s athletic director since 2012. During that time the school added three sports and Schergen was involved in the $2.3 million capital campaign to improve the school’s athletic facilities, including the new Plunkett Athletic Complex. He was named the 2017 Illinois Athletic Director’s Association state AD of the year.

Schergen is a graduate of Illinois State and Saint Xavier.

Schergen previously was the athletic director at Maria and Marist high schools in Chicago and also worked at Bremen High School in Midlothian and Mt. Carmel High School in Chicago. Schergen earned an IADA division AD of the year award in 2011 while at Marist.

I’ve never claimed to be a great driver. Good, perhaps; careful, for sure. My family would tell you I am cautious – sometimes to the point of being jumpy at the wheel.

By jumpy I mean on the lookout for surprises, aka accidents waiting to happen. Pedestrians who come out of nowhere, squirrels darting across the street, or dogs without leashes. And cars, mostly other cars, I have trust issues with other cars, or more specifically the drivers of those cars.

You can’t count on them to see you or follow the rules of the road.

Many are looking at phones. Everyone knows you shouldn’t text and drive but I see it all the time. Hence my caution and predisposition to brake first and ask question later.

Defensive driving 101 – I practically invented the topic.

This seasoned roadie has learned that not all driving is created equal.

Some situations are worse than others. There are a few scenarios where a diligent driver (like me) is likely to be more road-leery and brake-ready than usual.

Uncontrolled intersections are risky business. When I encounter a cross street with another vehicle inching out onto my roadway, I slow down and prepare to avoid a collision should they attempt to come crashing into me.

Four-way stop signs are controlled intersections and as such should bring comfort to a control freak. Unfortunately this isn’t the case. The concept of waiting your turn was mastered by most of us in kindergar-

For his Eagle Scout project, Wagner worked closely with Diveheart, an organization in Downers Grove whose mission is to build confidence, independence and self-esteem in the lives of children, adults and veterans with disabilities through scuba diving, scuba therapy and related activities. Wagner coordinated, promoted and conducted a four-hour event where a group of students with disabilities was able to experience scuba diving. That event took about three months to plan and was hosted on April 27, 2016, at DoubleTree

by Hilton Hotel Chicago - Oak Brook.

In addition, Wagner has participated in Boy Scouts of America’s National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) for five years. That program is designed for councils to provide youth members with leadership skills and experience they can use in their home troops and in other situations demanding leadership of self and others. Wagner now helps coordinate the NYLT. After high school, Wagner plans to stay involved with Boy Scouts through continuing with Venturing, a youth-development program that provides positive experiences to help young people mature and prepares them to become responsible and caring adults. He added he also plans to become an adult leader.

He plans to continue his education at Carthage College and has already been admitted into the Honors Program. Wagner plans to major in music education and looks forward to a career as a choir teacher and a diving instructor.

Featured speakers for the May 27 agenda, from 11 a.m –12 noon, includes Sean McMenemy, an animation artist who also enjoys urban sketching, painting and photography, and co-founder of Studios 630, who will share insight on how to create a successful Etsy store. Also on the agenda is freelance writer, Colette Freeman, who will discuss the value of a professionally written artist bio, including what it should and should not contain and how it will be used on behalf of the artist.

Although much of my work is helping people write books, I have never left the “joy” business. I still coach people and speak on science of happiness, positive psychology, and how to reduce stress. With all my clients, including book clients, I love seeing them step into their brilliance, own their bigger purpose and gain confidence in themselves. Trust and creativity grow.

As I prepare for a workshop I’ve been hired to give for a professional group, I am steeped in quotes I love.

Let me share some of them with you.

If you choose to stay in misery, no complaining allowed. That key to happiness is in your hand.

You must seek your own fulfillment in your own way, even if no one else understands. Some like to travel to far-flung places.

Some like to stay home and knit. No comparing, no judgement, just the knowing that you are in charge of you, and everybody else is on their

Happiness is about letting go of what we have been taught and tapping in to what we know, deep inside.

A Day Just For Mom

By Tresa Erickson Every year as the second Sunday in May approaches, millions of people across the country turn their thoughts to Mom and find ways to let her know how much she means to them. Although it wasn’t always celebrated on the second Sunday in May, Mother’s Day has been around in some form since ancient times.

The ancient Greeks and Romans held a festival each spring honoring maternal goddesses like Rhea and Cybele. During these celebrations, participants would put on parades, play games and participate in masquerades.

Early Christians held their own festival in honor of the Virgin Mary. When the English took up the celebration, they expanded it to include all mothers and renamed it Mothering Sunday. On this day, individuals attended services for the Virgin Mary and then visited their own mothers, bringing them flowers, gifts and treats.

The popularity of Mothering Sunday had faded considerably by the start of the 19th century but remerged in the 1870s due to the efforts of activist and writer Julia Ward Howe. Howe thought there should be a day in honor of mothers in the United States. She introduced her idea in 1872, calling for the celebration to take place on June 2 and all mothers to take a stand against war. Howe had seen the devastation the loss of life in the Civil War had had on mothers everywhere.

Although many embraced her idea of a day for peace, the celebration of Mother’s Day as we know it today did not come about until the

early 20th century when Anna Jarvis introduced it.

As a child, Anna Jarvis had heard her mother pray for a day dedicated solely to mothers, living and deceased, and honoring their contributions. When her mother died in 1905, Jarvis recalled her mother’s wish and started campaigning for a national holiday for mothers everywhere. She wrote letters to many leaders in her community and across the country and spoke about the matter at many functions.

By 1911, Jarvis’ efforts had paid off, with nearly every state in the country celebrating the day. Just three years later on May 8, 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a bill into law, establishing the second Sunday of every May Mother’s Day. Today, Mother’s Day is celebrated in various nations around the world.

Spouses and children all over take time out to honor the mothers in their lives, and for that, Anna Jarvis and her mother would be thankful.

Forest Preserve District to hold Native Plant Sale May 12-13 The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County invites gardeners to go native by shopping at the 10th annual Native Plant Sale on Friday, May 12, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturday, May 13, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Mayslake Peabody Estate at 1717 W. 31st St. in Oak Brook.

Set the stage

By Tresa Erickson Whether you entertain a lot or a little, you probably know that one of the best ways to ensure a good time for all is to create the right backdrop.

Guests often feel more welcome and willing to mingle when surrounded by a festive scene. This year as you are preparing for your Mother’s Day party, don’t forget to set the stage for a wonderful event. Take the time

to decorate, and watch your guests’ faces light up as they arrive and move through the spectacular setting you have created.

You should start your decorating by selecting a theme. This can be dictated by any number of things from the location of the party to the number of guests invited. If you are having a large informal get-together in the backyard, then you may want

to select an outdoorsy theme, like a picnic in the park or a day on the beach. If you are having a small formal tea in the dining room, then you may want to go with a garden party theme.

Once you have a theme in mind, you can start shopping for supplies.

Balloons, streamers and banners are common choices. You can purchase banners or make your own. Flowers

work well for any occasion, and you can select some of the favorites of the mothers at your party for the centerpieces and swags. For a personal touch, consider scattering photos of the mothers you’re celebrating around the room as well as some cards for them. Lights and candles are a welcome addition to nighttime festivities.

With supplies in hand, you can get down to the basics of actually setting up for the party. If you are having the party at home rather than somewhere off-site, take time to clean the areas where guests will be mingling. Addison Trail boys gymnastics Willowbrook baseball team making progress team has busy Blazers have increased team score by 40 points

The Addison Trail boys gymnastics team continues to trend upward.

Coach Mike Galfi noted through late last week the team had raised its overall score 40 points.

“We started the year with a team score of 88 points,” he said.

Recently, the Blazers were 128.9117.8 winners over Leyden in West Suburban Conference Gold Division action and also took fourth at the Lake Park Invitational with a 132.8 effort.

Senior Alex Kominowski recently took first place on floor, vault and parallel bars at the Fred Dennis Invitational and also took first on floor and parallel bars at Lake Park.

“Alex has been winning multiple events at meets,” said Galfi.

Galfi also noted the team’s improvement over the course of the conference dual-meet season. “We have seen such an improvement over the course of this year,” he said.

“Our first real team score this year was at Hinsdale South with a 112.8.

Since then, the team has been doing an excellent job of adding in new skills and cleaning up their form.

To go from a 112.8 at our first conference meet and score 128.8 at our last conference meet takes a tremendous amount of persistence and hard work. It’s great to see it paying off for the athletes.”

The coach added 24 of the team’s 28 gymnasts have done the sport for one or two years.

“We have an extremely young team this year and have asked many freshmen and sophomores to compete at the varsity level,” said Galfi.

“With that being said, most of our high-bar and parallel bar teams had

only a few skills at the beginning of the year, but have transitioned and developed to the point where they can competitively compete against other teams.”

Floor exercise has been another bright spot for the Blazers this season. “Floor consistently has been our best event,” said Galfi. “We have been averaging just under a 9.0 for our floor team this season.”

Galfi lauded the efforts of Kominowski, Jeremy Crespo and Carlos Alvarez this season. “Alex, Jeremy and Carlos are the clear leaders in the gym,” he said. “They have the longest tenure in the gym and they are leading by example to show the younger gymnasts what it takes to be successful in the sport.”

Galfi said the team has benefited from a strong work ethic in the practice gym. “What impresses me the most is their abilities to learn new skills and work on consistency and form throughout each practice,” he said. “I am really proud of this group for how far they have come.

They have exceeded my expectations already and I’m looking forward to seeing what this young group can do in a few years.”

Addison Trail boys volleyball team competes at Brother Rice Smack Attack Holliday, Stout exceling for Willowbrook boys track team

The Addison Trail boys volleyball team took 10th out of 24 team at the recent Brother Rice Smack Attack tournament.

“It’s one of the best tournaments in the state,” said Addison Trail coach Chad Grant.

At Brother Rice, Addison Trail was a 25-15, 25-18 winner over Fenwick. The Blazers lost 25-14, 25-22 to Lincoln-Way West before beating Providence Catholic (25-13, 26-24) and St. Francis (25-17, 24-26, 28-26).

Addison Trail also lost to St. Louis University High, the No. 1-ranked team in Missouri, by scores of 18-25, 2725, 25-18.

In other recent action, the Blazers lost 25-23, 25-20 to Downers Grove South in West Suburban Conference Gold Division action. The loss put Addison Trail at 12-9 overall and 2-2 in WSC Gold play.

“This season continues to be a challenge for us,” said Grant. “We have been forced to play with a bunch of different lineups for a variety of reasons and it has been difficult for us to find consistency.”

Grant noted the team has cut down on its service errors of late and the team is hard at work on cutting down on opponent point runs during certain rotations. He also would like to see his team fare better in close matches.

“We need to do a better job of closing out tight matches,”

he said. “Five of our losses were matches we could have won. We are working on getting those things cleaned up.”

Grant lauded the recent play of Colton Noel. “Colton has been coming on strong for us lately in the middle, which has given us a big boost on offense,” he said. “The boys have faced a lot of adversity this year and hopefully this is something that will help us out down the line.”

Willowbrook boys track Willowbrook welcomed back veteran Casey King last week after he recovered from a lower-body injury.

“That’s exciting,” said Willowbrook coach TJ Artman.

Freshman newcomer Deandre Holliday was won the high jump and triple jump at several invites for the Warriors. “Deandre is doing a great job,” said Artman.

Holliday has broken the freshman school record in both events during the outdoor season.

Sophomore hurdler Will Stout has been a standout in the 300 intermediate hurdles. “Will is doing a great job and has won several invites in the 300 intermediate hurdles,” said Artman.

Willowbrook will host the West Suburban Conference Gold Division meet this season.

“Our varsity team is shaping up and getting ready to compete at their best at the conference championships,” said Artman.

The Willowbrook baseball team got an extra-large dose of West Suburban Conference Gold Division action last week.

The Warriors went 3-2 overall in games against Hinsdale South and Leyden. Willowbrook was 15-4 overall through late last week.

Willowbrook started the week with an 8-1 WSC Gold loss to Hinsdale South. The Warriors were limited to five hits and made five errors. Ben Espinoza had a hit, as did Trevor Jaloszynski, Alex Michaelson, Jack Hines and Dan Gusel. Hines had an RBI, while Jaloszynski’s hit was a double. Michaelson took the loss. He fanned eight over 4 2/3 innings and allowed no earned runs. Scott Kohrt pitched the last 1 1/3 innings and struck out two.

The Warriors came back the next day to edge Hinsdale South 4-3. Willowbrook scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take the lead for good.

Espinoza went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Jon Kelso had a hit and an RBI, as did Michaelson. Kyle Ferguson had a hit and a run scored. Mike Dembowski had two hits. Hines had a hit, a run scored and an RBI, while Ryan Mintz had a hit. Kelso and Hines each tripled. Mintz was the winning pitcher. He threw a seven-inning complete game, allowing three hits and no earned runs, while striking out four.

Willowbrook then scored a 7-3 WSC Gold win over Leyden.

Willowbrook trailed 3-1 at one point in the game. The Warriors had 12 hits.

Espinoza had a hit, a run scored and two walks. Kelso went 3-for-3 with three runs scored. Michaelson went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. MJ Ranieri went 3-for-4 with two RBI. Ferguson had two hits, a run scored and two RBI. Hines added a hit. Ferguson, Kelso and Michaelson each had a double. Kelso stole two bases.

Jaloszynski was the winning pitcher. He went 3 2/3 innings and struck out two. Will Hines and Vince Ruchala pitched the final 3 1/3 innings in relief and allowed no earned runs and only three hits.

The Warriors then won their three-game series against Hinsdale South with a 6-2 victory. Willowbrook had nine hits and was powered by a five-run fifth inning.

The IC Catholic Prep girls track team had a number of notable performances in a recent meet at Glenbard South that included the host school, Glenbard East, Illiana Christian and Riverside-Brookfield.

Kiersten King won the 200 with a time of 27.36, but suffered a leg injury as she finished. Katarina Vorne won the 400 in 1:06.67.

The IC Catholic Prep 800 relay team of Jaida Smith, Olivia Slavin, Hannah Johnson and King won the race in 1:54.71.

Smith was second in the triple jump at 33-6, while Johnson was third in the event at 32-11 1/4.

IC Catholic Prep’s 1,600 relay was second at 4:46.77 with Slavin, Johnson, Nailah Landon and Vorne.

Smith was third in the long jump at 14-8 1/4. The Knights’ 3,200 relay team of Julissa Unzueta, Katerina Vasquez, Anna Gendusa and Bianca Arenas was third at 12:54.46.

Slavin was fourth in the 100 high hurdles at 18.28.

Five things to Know if someone you love is addicted to painkillers (StatePoint) Fifty-two people die every day from opioid overdoses nationwide, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported more than 12 million U.S. residents used prescription painkillers non-medically in the past year.

Unfortunately, even a small dosage can depress respiratory function, and these drugs can be especially dangerous when combined with other common substances like alcohol and sleeping pills. What’s more, prescription drug abuse can be addictive, and even lead to heroin use.

If you love someone who may be addicted to prescription painkillers, here are five things the National Safety Council says you should know.

1. Addiction is a chronic disease that affects the brain. Addiction, like heart disease or diabetes, leads to increasingly poor health, and can be fatal if it’s not effectively treated and managed. People who suffer

from addiction still have self-worth and should be treated with dignity.

Unfortunately, shame and discrimination prevent many individuals from seeking treatment. Recovery can be achieved in many different ways and all recovery efforts should be celebrated.

2. Medication Helps. Opioid and heroin addiction cause a chemical imbalance in the brain, which medication can help repair. There are three major medications typically used as part of a comprehensive treatment plan that includes counseling and participation in social support programs: Buprenorphine, methadone and naltrexone. Buprenorphine and methadone diminish the effects of withdrawal and cravings restoring brain chemistry. Naltrexone blocks the euphoric effects of opioids and heroin. Buprenorphine and naltrexone can be administered by health care providers. Methadone is delivered in specialized clinics.

3. Traditional treatments aren’t always effective. Recovery is a lifelong journey. Unfortunately, some traditional treatments focus on quicker fixes like attempting it alone or by going cold turkey, which ultimately can be detrimental. Indeed, rates of relapse for people who have gone through in-patient treatment programs are up to 56 percent within the first year following discharge.

However, medications, can offer longer-term solutions, and are often less expensive than in-patient treatment. If traditional substance abuse programs haven’t worked, consider medication.

4. Support is critical. A failed cycle of detox and inpatient therapy, then relapse, can leave a person feeling hopeless. This is why support is critical. Doctors and treatment counselors are important, but even more so is a well-informed support group of family and friends.

“Addiction is not a broken arm

that can be fixed. It’s like being on a permanent diet with a piece of candy staring at you every day,” says “Israel, a survivor advocate who lost his son after battling a prescription drug addiction. He advises friends and family of patients to, “Know the signs of addiction. Don’t judge.

Throw tough love out the window.

Love. But love with structure.”

5. Understanding addiction is crucial. Both patients and their friends and family should understand that addiction is a disease, and know what is needed to manage it.

“My son had Crohn’s disease, and I knew everything about that. I wish

I had known as much about addiction,” says Israel.

There are more options than traditional 30-day-treatment programs and 12-step programs. In addition to medication, there are support programs like SMART recovery, which provide attendees with tools based on the latest scientific research, as well as a worldwide community with self-empowering, sciencebased support groups.

A road of recovery is paved by many people – not just those in recovery. With the right support systems in place, a successful and sober life is possible.

Three tips to quit smoking a tobacco-free hour, day or weekend, before tackling longer-term goals.

• Find a replacement. It’s helpful to have new habits you can fall back on to help expunge cravings and put your mind towards something more positive -- whether that’s keeping your hands busy with a crafting project, or keeping your body active with running or yoga.

• Seek help. Free online resources

and telephone phone hotlines can provide health facts and tools to help you quit. These programs often include tools for friends of smokers who want to help someone quit.

District 88 student art show at PAC The Park Art Center, located at 9 E. Park Blvd. in downtown Villa Park, will be the scene of the District 88 Student Art Show.

The IC Catholic Prep girls soccer team lost a tough Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division game.

And apparently the Knights weren’t too happy about that. IC Catholic Prep rebounded swiftly from the loss to outscore its next two opponents 12-1.

IC Catholic Prep lost 3-2 to Aurora Central Catholic in MSC Blue play, but came back to defeat Timothy Christian 6-0 in a MSC crossover game and then downed Hinckley-Big Rock 6-1 in non-conference play.

Tessa Langan had four goals in the win against Timothy, while Katie Hendricks and Bella Leslie each had a goal. Reardon, Grace Fuller and Olivia Hurt each recorded an assist.

Hurt and Fuller each scored two goals in the win over Hinckley. Leslie and Hendricks each added a goal. Sophie Zanoni, Langan, Annie Guinan, Jalene Pina and Hurt each had an assist.

“We had a tough loss against ACC,” said IC Catholic Prep coach Tom Schergen. “We outshot them 17-9 but we gave up a tough goal with 40 seconds left. It was nice to see the girls rebound like they did. They didn’t let that loss hold them back. They came back even stronger.

They showed a lot of heart and perseverance.”

Schergen has been pleased with the team’s ball distribution throughout the season. “We’re still moving the ball well and we’re sharing it,” he said. “We have eight girls who have multiple goals on the season. We have a long list of goal scorers. We’re sharing the wealth.”

Schergen also has been impressed with the defensive side of the field. “Defensively we’ve been strong all year,” he said. “We have a very good defense that stays together. Our goalkeeping with Gabby Smola and Rochelle Spizzirri continues to get stronger each game.”

Langan was the team’s leading goal-scorer with 15 through late last week. Hurt is right behind her with 14.

Schergen also has been pleased with the development of freshmen Leslie and Guinan. “We moved Bella and Annie to the midfield and they have stepped up instantly in the center-midfield,” he said.

Through late last week, the Knights were 11-4 overall and 2-3 in MSC Blue play.

In other recent action, the Knights downed Fenton 2-1 in MSC Blue play. Fuller had both Knights’ goals.

IC Catholic Prep also defeated Evergreen Park by a 5-1 count. Langan, Fuller, Hurt, Kaitlyn Grady and Zanoni each had a goal in the non-conference win. Fuller had two assists, while Hurt and Grady each had an assist.
