ELIZABETH — 4-H Fair 2015 has come and gone, but the quest for recognition in next year’s event has already begun for many of the dozens of area club members that worked all year to prepare their exhibits and livestock to show in Elizabeth last week. “We’ve just spent the last week celebrating 4-H’ers and their accomplishments and we’ve seen general projects, livestock , just a little bit of everything 4-H,” said Jo Daviess County 4-H Youth and Development program coordinator Angela Miller. She said the county boasts of 7 individual clubs serving a membership of nearly 200 young people. “We started the week with a horse show that gave the kids a chance to show their horses,” Miller said. “We moved then to the Cloverbuds which is our five to seven year olds. We did general projects that encompassed everything from aerospace to veterinarian science to rocketry to visual arts, food and nutrition, horticulture and more.” As always, the livestock projects included showings of goats, sheep, poultry, rabbits and pretty much every class of livestock managed for production. Lena resident and Chelsea Busy Bees member Olivia Kepner showed both livestock and a general project at the fair. “This year I brought two gilts, a steer and a heifer and I brought a welding project and a food and nutrition project,” she said. “The hogs were raised on our family farm outside of Lena and I’ve helped with those

chores throughout their lives,” said Kepner. “We bring them in at market weight, so my hogs came in around 275.” She said her welding project involved building a creep feeder for her dad’s hog house. “He was in and out of the shop through the project and helped me,” she said. Kepner was awarded Grand Champion for her welding project and dad’s hogs are glad of it. “I’ve been in 4-H for quite a few years and it’s taught me a lot about confidence,” she said. “Sometimes your project may not turn out exactly how you want it to, but 4-H provides the opportunity to have it judged by someone that knows what they’re talking about and they can give you pointers so you can improve. 4-H is a great opportunity and I would encourage anybody to join.” Millers said 4-H is changing to stay abreast of its membership’s evolving interests. “We’ve begun to see interests stepping out of the more traditional livestock areas and so we’ve begun to push more in the area of general projects, but we are still very much active in anything agriculture because that’s what we are Tracy Siegner photo based on and that is what we want to continue,” she said.
