Warriors set sights on post-season opener By Chris Johnson
The Warren-Stockton Warriors learned they had been given a favorable starting position for the upcoming 2A Baseball Playoffs a little over a week ago. The IHSA Selection Committee met and filled in the brackets for the State Tournament. The six-seed Warriors will host eight-seed Pecatonica-Durand on Monday, May 14. A win on Monday night will put Warren-Stockton into the path of the top seed in the Fulton Sectional 2A Complex, Byron. The Tigers were given the two-seed and are a heavy favorite to move out of their own Regional Semi-Final and into into the Saturday, 2A first-round title game. This is the final week of the regular season and the Warriors carry a 5-6 conference mark into action. Even though they aren’t in the discussion about conference titles, they are still in the chase for a solid runner-up honor. Third place, also known as “best of the rest” will be determined. The conference race was over for most teams in the NUIC-West weeks ago. It was a two-team chase since the end of April, in most statistical categories. The Eastland Cougars are 12-1 and hold a one win and one loss advantage over the West Carroll Thunder, who are 11-2. River Ridge/Scales Mound is statistically in third place, carrying a win-loss mark of 6-5. That puts them three losses back with less than that many games for the conference leaders to lose, with less than a week to go. There isn’t enough time for most teams in the West to move anywhere towards the lead, but a win here and a loss there could give a team the silver. Warren-Stockton with its 5-6 mark is one of those challenging for that honor. East Dubuque is 7-7 and Pearl City at 6-7 are in the mix too. Everything comes to a close in a couple days with the final results tabulated before the post-season begins on Monday. Warren-Stockton has seen mixed
results over the past few weeks of the regular season. They split the season series with Pearl City to help wind down last month’s play. On April 24, the Wolves played host and fell by four, 5-1. Two days later, Pearl City squared the ledger with a four-run, 7-3 decision. The Warriors went out on the road after that. The trip led them to East Dubuque, where they got back on the positive side of the stat sheet with a 3-2 decision. Galena slowed the momentum with a 4-1 win on April 30. The Pirates managed to get on the board first and found a way to work around Warriors’ hitters. The hosts added two runs in the fourth and carried a 3-0 edge into the top of the fifth. A few things fell into place in the visitor’s half of the fifth. Warren-Stockton plated one. A half inning later Galena got it back and moved to a 4-1 edge. They held on for the three-run, West win. On Thursday, May 10, the 2018 spring, regular season comes to an end for Warren-Stockton. They will play on the road at Lena-Winslow. The match gives the Warriors a shot at a season sweep. They tamed the Panthers in an extra-inning, early-April eight-inning affair, 8-7.
