There are a lot of teams in the NUIC-West that want to claim the title of best of show and with the pitching performance the River Ridge/Scales Mound Wildcats have enjoyed this season, they have to be considered as one of the front-runners for the honor. They’ve already taken down every team they’ve faced this season, with the exception of the conference leading, 7-1, Eastland Cougars. They had to settle for a season split against them. On April 10, Eastland silenced River Ridge/Scales Mound 5-0. There were no hits available for the Wildcats in the Tuesday match. The Cougars pounded out eight, en route to their conference win. Two days later the two teams met up again and this time River Ridge/Scales Mound got to host. It was a major advantage and one that lead to a 1-0 shutout victory. The Wildcats collected five hits in the West win and took advantage of three Eastland miscues. The single run scored was supported by one of the best pitching performances of the season. Each team registered its only season loss against the other. They won’t have to face off again until probably a Regional or Sectional Final in late May. The problem conference foes are going to have with River Ridge/Scales Mound this season is finding a way to get past strong starting and shutdown late inning pitching. As a team, the Wildcats have only allowed six runs to be scored against them. They’ve scored 41 and trail only Eastland and its 45 runs scored, in that offensive category. The Cougars register the second
best pitching and defensive support in the NUIC-West. They have given up eleven runs, in eight games played. The co-op of Warren and Stockton currently sit with the third best defensive category in the conference. There are three teams leading the West with one loss records. Eastland and River Ridge/Scales Mound are two of them. On Wednesday, April 25, the Wildcats will face the other, Pearl City. They’ll be on the road as well. East Dubuque appears on the schedule on Monday, April 30. River Ridge/Scales Mound will play host. It’s a good shot at a fairly easy win, statistics seem to indicate. The Warriors sit one position ahead of Galena, at the basement level in the NUIC. They entered this week with a 1-6 conference record and have given up the second most runs in the West this season. The match sets up to be an almost “automatic” win for the Wildcats, given their domination from the hill. Pearl City reappears on the schedule as the first week of May expires. The Wolves will travel to River Ridge/Scales Mound and will either be looking to even up the score and attempt to collect no worse than a split, or either team could be looking at a season sweep. The style of play is a little different for the two 5-1 squads and depending on other variables such as clutch hitting and errorfree play, the survivor will find itself remaining at the front of the pack, leading the West. One loss separates five teams from first place in the conference at this point in the season. West Carroll joins Warren/Stockton with two-loss West marks and are one-loss away from staking their claim as the best in the West themselves.
