Village of Warren hosts seventh annual round table discussion By Tony Carton Editor
WARREN — About fifty area residents attended the seventh annual Village of Warren Round Table discussion Wednesday to hear presentations outlining the projects underway in the village and to offer feedback, ideas and suggestions for future development. Lisa McaCarthy, Executive Director of TCEDA opened the night’s discussions with information ranging from a workforce statistics to employment trends to the creation of new businesses. McCarthy suggested several solutions including further development of business retention and expansion and recommended wider use of the region’s only Small Business Development Center. She also suggested use of the Build it • Grow it program which combines special educational sessions and private, confidential consultations with expert Small Business Development Directors. Build it Grow it consulting sessions are held at the Elizabeth Village Board Room, 310 North West Street, Elizabeth, IL. For more information email lmccarthy@tceda-nwil.org or call 815858-4491. Warren residents Dick and Cathy Burmeister presented a brief outline of TIF Assistance Programs available through the village. Tax increment financing (TIF) is a public financing method that is used as a subsidy for redevelopment, infrastructure, and other communityimprovement projects. Through the use of TIF, municipalities typically divert future property tax revenue increases from a defined area or district toward an
economic development project or public improvement project in the community. Information about the TIF services available in Warren is available at the village hall. Library Director Elizabeth Myelle listed a number of new projects underway at the public library. Among them are Story Hour on Saturdays, holiday celebrations, book networks offering the availability of college textbooks, a talking book service and the library’s first Stuff the Bag book sale which is currently underway and will repeat on March 19 and April 16. Participants are invited to visit the library’s surplus books collection and stuff a bag for $3. Myelle also announced a traveling wellness exhibit due to visit Warren in two years. Watch for further announcements. MAPPING the Future of your Community Director Gisele Hamm brought a presentation of that project to the table and announced Warren’s decision to undertake its own MAPPING project this fall. MAPPING the Future of Your Community is a strategic visioning and planning process for rural communities to create a longrange vision for the economic development of their community and a plan of action for achieving it.
