Lena Winslow teams continue strong showing SPORTSWRITER
Le-Win Boys stay hot The Panthers boys’ basketball team hosted two games against the Dakota Indians and the Forreston Cardinals. They began the week with a matchup against a tough Dakota team, as the Indians carried a 9-3 record and posed to be quite the opponent for the Panthers. Le-Win, who came in off two straight wins, held a record of 11-3. It was a key, conference matchup for two of the teams expected to finish near the top of the NUIC-North. Things were even from start to finish. The Indians and Panthers went into the second quarter tied at nine. Le-Win took a slight advantage in the second quarter when they outscored Dakota 11-4. The Indians would take the lead back coming out of the break, however. They outscored the Panthers 14-6 in the third quarter and took a 27-26 lead into the fourth. It took an overtime period to decide this nail-biter of a game, but the Panthers would prevail as they came out with a 42-40 win. Alex Daughenbaugh led the way in the win with thirteen points while Isaiah Bruce finished with twelve. On Thursday, the Panthers hosted a struggling Cardinals team out of Forreston. The Cardinals came in with just a 3-6 record and posed to be little threat to the rolling Panthers. Le-Win held the advantage from the very beginning as the Panthers jumped out to a quick 13-5 lead. Kolton Heun came out firing on his way to a six point first quarter. The Panther offense exploded in the second quarter when seemingly everyone found their rhythm to combine for twenty-four points. Daugh-
enbaugh hit on a pair of three pointers and Luke Benson added a three of his own. Bruce added six points as well, and the Panthers took an impressive 37-12 lead into halftime. The second half was much of the same as Le-Win dominated the rest of the way, routing the Cardinals to a final score of 59-24. Heun led the team with twelve points and then the Panthers had three scorers finish with nine in: Benson, Daughenbaugh, and Bruce. The all-around performance helped get the Panthers get their fourth win in a row as they pushed their record to 13-3. They have a pair of key matchups this week as they face off with Pecatonica and travel to Pearl City on Thursday, Jan. 16. Lady Panthers pick up pair of wins Last Week, the Lena-Winslow girls’ basketball team was scheduled for two key conference matchups with the Pecatonica Indians and the Pearl City Wolves. First, they had to handle Tuesday’s matchup with Pecatonica. The Indians came in with a 7-10 record as they looked to climb their way back to a five-hundred winning percentage. The Lady Panthers came in at 12-7, but they were in need of a bounce back after suffering a tough loss to a solid Amboy team. The Indians were unable to pull off the upset and keep up with the efficient Panthers’ offense, however. Lena-Winslow had four scorers reach double digits on an impressive team performance. Cierra Mapes led the team with fifteen points and was followed up by Sadie Mowery who finished with twelve. Kali Humphrey was next up with eleven points and Cheyanne Mapes was the fourth
