Huntley Hootenanny Glow 5K Run/Walk The Huntley 158 Education Foundation will hold its 2nd Annual Huntley Hootenanny Glow 5K Fun Run/Walk on Sept. 7 in Downtown Huntley. In the first year of the event, more than 1,800 participants from the local area took to the Huntley Square for a night of fluorescent fun, including a glow run/walk, dance party, children’s activities, and great food from local vendors. The 2nd annual Hootenanny will cap registration at 2,500. Registration for the event is now open, and will be exclusively online at www.signmeup.com/D158Glow5K. Cost is $10 for students and $25 for adults. Register online now. The Huntley Hootenanny is sponsored by the Huntley 158 Education Foundation and the Village of Huntley. The race is untimed. Prizes will be awarded to the first female and male finishers. In addition, prizes will be awarded for Glowiest Participant and Glowiest Building/House,
Fence or Yard along the race route. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Huntley 158 Education Foundation’s teacher grants and student scholarships. As one of the lowest operatingcost-per-pupil districts in the Chicago area, we ask that you consider a sponsorship donation to help us make this the best event possible. Your monetary donation will be recognized at our event in several ways. Fall’s Adventures start now with McHenry County Conservation District Discovery Days Thursday, Sept. 12 from 10 to 11 a.m. at Coral Woods Conservation Area, 7400 Somerset, Marengo. Enjoy an hour of fun including a game, craft, snack and other educational activities all based around the special theme of the day. A short hike will be included, weather permitting. Fee: County resident Free/Non-Resident $5. Just for kids ages 2 to 6, with chaperone. Registration required. Full Moon Hike Friday, Sept. 13 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at The Hollows Conservation Area, 3804 U.S. Hwy 14, Cary. As the sun sets and the full moon rises, join us for a hike around Lake Atwood. Discover full moon stories from cultures around the world, and learn what we know about the moon today. Leave your flashlights at home and let the moon light the way. Stick around after the hike to enjoy a tasty treat. Fee: County resident Free/Non-Resident $5. For adults and families. Registration required. Vultures on the Ridge Saturday, Sept. 14 from 1:30 to 3 p.m. at Marengo Ridge Conservation Area, 2411 N. IL Rt. 23, Marengo. Visit one of the highest points in McHenry County and also one of the most scenic. Our vultures use the thermal winds blowing up and down Marengo Ridge to soar and hunt for their food. Vultures hunt using their amazing eyesight and sense of smell. We’ll read a story, do a quick craft, and spend time practicing our observation skills. Join us to find out more about this amazing creature. Fee: County resident Free/ Non-Resident $2. Adults and Families ages 8 and up. Registration required. Cast Iron Cooking: Fall Favorites Saturday, Sept. 21 from 9 to 1 p.m. at Prairieview Education Center, 2112 Behan Road, Crystal Lake. Learn to cook some tasty Dutch oven autumn recipes while also learning about cast iron use
and care. Most importantly, we’ll be preparing lunch that we’ll enjoy together. Leave with new knowledge as well as recipes. Taught by the one and only Dutch Oven Diva, Lesley Tennessen. Family Scavenger Hunt Saturday, Sept. 21 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at Boone Creek Conservation Area, 916 Cold Springs Rd., Bull Valley. Bring your family out for an autumn scavenger hunt adventure. Meet us at the shelter for It’s not an invasion of aliens … the park is filled with racers from last year’s Huntley Hootenanny Glow an introduction and to pick up your 5K Run/Walk. map and scavenger hunt sheet. Fall Photography Sunday, Sept. 22 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Shelter #1, Hickory Grove Highlands Conservation Area, 500 Hickory Nut Grove Lane, Cary. Fall is here and brings with it beautiful colors. Learn how to capture the magic of the “golden hour” and changing seasons with some tips and tricks on how to use your camera phone. Are you more advanced? Feel free to bring your own equipment and take advantage of this opportunity to photograph the park “after hours”.
