Environmental Defenders awards two $1,000 scholarships The Environmental Defenders of McHenry County is pleased to announce the winners of two College Scholarships of $1,000 each to two outstanding recent McHenry County high school graduates planning to pursue careers related to environmental/sustainability/conservation studies. The awardees are: Isabel Dunn, a recent graduate of Johnsburg High School and Isabel Bernardi, a recent graduate of Jacobs High School in Algonquin. Ms. Dunn will be attending University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point to pursue studies in Natural Resources & Conservation. Ms. Bernardi will be attending Iowa State for engineering with a sub-major focusing on the environment. Scholarships are awarded to deserving high school seniors in McHenry County who demonstrate a commitment to environmental stewardship throughout their high school experience and prior. Applications from high school seniors are accepted and reviewed annually. The Environmental Defenders of McHenry County is a non-profit member organization celebrating its 48th year of environmental stewardship through advocacy, preservation, protection and education.
Community invited to ‘Geocaching After Dark’ Join McHenry County Conservation District for Geocaching After Dark, a hi-tech modern day treasure hunt for hidden caches on Friday, July 20 from 8 to 10 p.m. at Pleasant Valley Conservation Area, 13315 Pleasant Valley Road, Woodstock. Upon arrival, you will receive a list that contains the coordinates where each cache is hidden. Each cache will contain a fun surprise and a ticket to be entered for a grand prize. Once all cachers have completed the course, a winning ticket will be drawn for the grand prize (winner need not be present to win). Bring a flashlight for each member of your party so you can locate the hidden caches in the dark! Both experienced and relatively new geocachers are welcome, but knowledge of the sport and how to use the equipment are required, as instruction will not be provided. If possible, bring your own GPS unit; a limited number of units are available. If you would like to reserve a unit (one per family) please indicate when you register. For Adults and Families ages 8 and up. Fee: County resident $5/NR $7. Register online at MCCDistrict.org, by phone (free programs only) at 815479-5779, by mail-in and dropoff at Prairieview Education Center, 2112 Behan Road in Crystal Lake, or drop-off only at Lost Valley Visitor Center, Route 31 and Harts Road in Ringwood.
