Volo Bog celebrating International Bog Day on July 28

Antioch’s Taste of Summer

Head out to the Volo Bog State Natural Area, 28478 W. Brandenburg Rd., Ingleside on July 28 to celebrate International Bog Day. The event runs from Noon-4:30 p.m. and will feature artist reception and silent auction, live music, bog tours, bog crafts for kids and “bog frog” cookies and other snacks.

Bog are a delicate ecosystem of accumulating peat soils, receiving very little nutrients from rainwater, their main water source. The resulting soil, poorly decomposed and stingy in nutrients, harbors an eclectic mix of uniquely adapted plants.

International Bog Day was established in 1992 in Scotland. Volo Bog State natural Area was the first to bring it to the United States in 2008. Purchased in 1958 by The Nature Conservancy, Volo Bog has survived threats from development that would have drained the bog, and a highway that was proposed to bisect the state natural area into two. Over the decades, generations have fought to preserve this unique ecosystem.

The Friends of Volo Bog were born in part from these efforts to preserve the area.

Sheriff’s office warns residents of home improvement scams

Antioch’s Taste of Summer

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office warns residents to be cautious and diligent when contracting for home improvements. During warmer months, groups of con-artists often referred to as traveling criminals, make their way to McHenry County. These groups target senior citizens, but will approach other homeowners, to offer services that end up being subpar and require the homeowner to spend hundreds, and sometimes thousands of dollars to repair.

An Example of One Scam: A homeowner will receive a knock at their door and the sales person for a driveway sealcoating company will offer a “Great Deal” to sealcoat the driveway with left over driveway sealer from a previous job. They will quote the homeowner a rate significantly lower than the going rate for a professional sealcoating company.

The sales person will use high-pressure and fear of loss tactics to scam victims into agreeing to their deal. Once they have their cash in hand their team of seal coaters will come in and use substandard materials, which normally wash off after the first rain, to coat the driveway. After they are done they will re-approach the homeowner and

CLC instructor appeared on ABC-TV’s ‘Holey Moley’ Mick Cullen, a College of Lake County instructor of human services and a world record holder in miniature golf, was a contestant on the July 18 installment of “Holey Moley,” a new competition series on ABC-TV that showcases mini-golf lovers from around the country as they compete through an epic obstacle golf course for a $25,000 prize.

Cullen, 42, a Lindenhurst resident and lifelong mini golf enthusiast, said he was “really excited” to receive a phone call in March from the show’s production company, asking him to come to Los Angeles in April for a week of filming. He said he first learned of the casting call last October from friends.

Rather than appear in person, Cullen and the other prospects submitted online applications and videos of their mini golf skills. The next steps, during the winter months, were phone and Skype interviews with show producers as well as a background check.

Cullen mentioned in the interviews his world record that he achieved in 2011, for the largest number of rounds of mini golf played in 24 hours. He played 5,040 holes (280 18-hole rounds) at an indoor mini golf facility in Waukegan.

His feat raised $2,500 for Parkinson’s disease research, in memory of his wife’s late grandfather who experienced the disorder. (Cullen’s record, which is recognized by www.

recordsetter.com, surpasses a Guinness record that is disputed within the mini golf community because the latter golfer is alleged not to have kept score.)

To prepare for the April filming, Cullen said he practiced an hour a day for a month at a Waukegan course as well as the Libertyville Sports Complex.

For the taping, Cullen flew to California with his mother, Dianne, 62, who is also a contestant on the show Mick Cullen and will appear in the July 25 installment. She will not compete with Mick, who put in a good word for her when asked by show producers to recommend other contestants. Dianne also had to complete the application and interview process.

Cullen, who has played on 250 mini golf courses in 31 states, said his love for the sport goes back to childhood growing up in Wildwood and Grayslake.

“My parents took me and my brother to a 36-hole course in Beach Park, and the admission was only four dollars for a family of four at the time,” he said. “It was inexpensive family entertainment.”

Is Now to Help, one of my areas of greatest concern was finding good people homeless, not those too lazy to help themselves, but the working poor and senior citizens. I remember many of first people we helped were found sleeping on park benches and shelters.

Single mothers and senior citizens without a place to sleep and not enough food to eat saddened me the most.

I remember babies without diapers and children who did not have a coat or toy of their own, much less a bed. Helping them was my first experience in poverty relief.

Thirty years later and I am still confronted with homelessness.

I called this woman and we agreed to meet that afternoon.

“This keeps me from having to sleep in my car at night when it’s most scary to be a woman all alone,” she

I already had encountered the first of many special circumstances of the homeless: Their history follows them and makes it even more difficult to recover from an eviction or job loss. Discrimination is something they deal with every day.

We met at a local restaurant with a quiet corner where we could hopefully talk unnoticed.

The woman was concerned about looking homeless.

But nearly every homeless person I have met is someone you would never guess was homeless.

I have helped people in all professions who went to work every day after sleeping in their vehicle, tent or a motel if they were lucky. And their co-workers were never aware of their situations.

I encouraged the woman to order something, but she refused, saying she had eaten.

But after I reassured her I

would be buying her lunch, she finally gave in.

We talked about the circumstances that led to her being homeless.

She told me how she slightly injured her shoulder as a CNA while helping a patient out of bed. Then while lifting a heavy item at home the next week the shoulder injury became serious.

She used up her sick days and finally saw a doctor and learned she needed surgery.

She underwent the procedure but was unprepared for a long recovery and job restrictions.

She also suffered setbacks, and by this time the woman had received an eviction notice and was struggling to pay her rent.

“I asked my ex-husband if he could help with food for our daughter, and he gave just enough so I could feed her when she was with me. I skipped meals here and there to try and pay more of my rent, but it was not enough. The lowest point in my life was when I received my eviction notice. … I don’t know how to get my life back on track.”

I told her to wipe away her tears because we would do what we could to help her make things right for her and her daughter.

I told her how we would provide a motel room until she

gets settled in an apartment.

“How will I get another apartment? I have an eviction on my record and everyone I have called has told me they cannot rent to me.”

I explained our network of landlords and friends of our charity that do their best to find places for people just like her, a hardworking person who has fallen on hard times.

I looked over her bills and budget while she ate. She told me about the new job and that she soon would change to the day shift, which would work better for her health and her ability to share custody of her daughter again.

We would pay her first two months of rent so she could start saving for future expenses. Her ex-husband had let her store her belongings in his garage, except her the beds that were old and too heavy to move. So we would provide different ones after she found an apartment.

Open auditions for “It Runs in the Family”, a comedy by Ray Cooney, will be held on Monday, July 29, and Tuesday, July 30 beginning at 7:00 pm. in PM&L Theatre’s Tribute Hall, located at 877 Main Street in Antioch, IL. There will be callbacks on Wednesday, July 31, if needed.

The director, Jim Behr is looking to cast 13 roles, with stage-ages 16 and up, all ethnicities. Roles include Dr. Mike Connely, Rosemary Mortimore, Matron, Sir Willoughy Drake, Jane Tate, Sister, Leslie Tate, Police Sergeant, Bill Lesley, and Mother Bonney.

Domino’s employee charged with stealing $28,000 On July 17, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office learned of an ongoing employee-theft occurring at Domino’s Pizza located in the 38900 block of North Lewis Avenue, Beach Park.

Further investigation conducted by Sheriff’s Deputies and Sheriff’s Detectives showed Domino’s employee Radley M. Kuersten, 20, of the 11500 block of Oak Drive, Beach Park, had been stealing cash from the restaurant for

over a month, totaling approximately $28,000.00.

Sheriff ’s Detectives discovered Kuersten was tasked with taking Radley M. the daily deKuersten posits to the bank. Instead of taking the cash to the bank, Kuersten stole the money and kept it for

himself. Sheriff’s Detectives were able to recover approximately $20,000 of the cash from Kuersten’s residence, belonging to Domino’s.

Kuersten was arrested and the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office approved one count of Felony Theft (Class 2 Felony).

Sheriff Idleburg reminds the community all defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.

New in 2019 the Lake County Fair will be offering a new experience for fairgoers and food vendors. The Taste of the Fair experience allows fairgoers to sample a variety of different and delicious Fair foods at a lower price. The experience encourages vendors to offer small versions of their signature menu items for a reduced price so fairgoers can enjoy more of their favorite fair foods.

Fairgoers will be able to tell that a food vendor is participating in the Taste of the Fair by looking for a sign displayed in their booth which will be provided by the Lake County Fair.

Fairgoers will then vote on their favorite Taste of the Fair samples.

The Taste of the Fair will take place on Wednesday, July 24 – Friday, July 26 from 12:00pm – 5:00pm each day.

Each participating food ven-

dor will select one item from their menu to be sampled*.

Samples must be a quarter of the regular sized portion and all samples will be advertised as $3.00.

The Lake County Fair runs from Wednesday, July 24 through Sunday, July 28. The fairgrounds are located at 1060 East Peterson Road, Grayslake.

Local law enforcement meet to learn about Firearms Restraining Order law On July 17, Lake County Sheriff John Idleburg and Lake County State’s Attorney Michael Nerheim hosted a seminar to police executives and police supervisors to better understand the Firearms Restraining Order law (FRO), which went into effect on January 1, 2019.

Numerous members of area lawenforcement attended and were provided information regarding: what is an FRO, how does an FRO work, who can petition for an FRO, what happens once an FRO is issued, and Q&A on the FRO law from area experts.

Lake County State’s Attorney Michael Nerheim said, “We look forward to working with our law enforcement partners to ensure proper implementation of this important

tool to enhance community safety.”

We as a society need to work together to keep firearms out of the hands of violent people, those with mental illness, and those who are not legally allowed to possess them. Fox Lake Police Department announces enforcement statistics The Fox Lake Police Department announced it made 1 impaired driving arrest, 2 warrant arrest, and issued 37 total citations during the recent Fourth of July ‘Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over’ and ‘Click It or Ticket’ safety campaigns.

During the 22-day mobilization the Fox Lake PD issued: 6 uninsured motorist citations, 8 speeding citations and 23 other violations.

Law enforcement agencies throughout Illinois participat-

ed in this statewide effort to get drunk and drugged drivers off our roads and encourage seat belt use.

The Fox Lake Police Department joined forces with more than 160 other state and local law enforcement agencies conducting the crackdown, which featured high-visibility enforcement combined with a variety of outreach activities including a media campaign.

“Because of the efforts by our community leaders to

spread the word about alcohol and drug impaired driving, the streets were safer during the Independence Day holiday,” said Chief Jimmy Lee. “We strongly enforce traffic laws for one reason – to save lives.”

The recent law enforcement effort was funded by federal traffic safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation as part of the statewide ‘Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over’ and ‘Click It or Ticket’ programs.

Family summer vacations the best vacations of all There aren’t many weeks of the year that can rival a summer vacation. Except maybe a winter vacation, but hey, it’s summer so let’s stay in the here and now.

Vacations, no matter what time of year, are preferable to a regular old non-vacation week. But in my opinion, summer beats winter any month of the year. Summer is warm weather. Summer is sunshine beaming off the lake. Summer is cool water and cold drinks. Summer is barbecue and corn on the cob. Summer is draping wet beach towels over the deck railing to dry. Summer is summer solstice.

Summer days are longer than winter days, so you get more bang for your buck with a vacation during June, July or August.

A stretched out lazy and carefree day makes time for late morning brunches and late night sunsets. Breakfast can morph into lunch and

Summer vacations often involve one of my favorite places: the beach. In the best- case scenario, a beach is made up of sand, which can be used to build castles or sculptures or just run through your fingers or toes.

After sand, one of the best features of the beach is that it is nearly always in close proximity to recreational water. Not the kind of recreational water that you drink, although that also goes well with the beach on occasion.
