On Tuesday, June 16, the Independent received a call that a helicopter was heard flying over the City in the vicinity of Route 83 and North Avenue. Later it was learned that an elderly man had gone missing at about 11 p.m. and a police helicopter had been dispatched to assist in locating him after reports indicated he had been seen inside the fence at the Elmhurst-Chicago Stone Quarry.

According to the police report issued later, officers responded to the 400 block of W. First at around 10:19 p.m. for the report of a suspicious person seen walking inside of the quarry fence line. With the assistance of a Chicago Police helicopter, the victim was located and transported by medics to Elmhurst Hospital for treatment. The victim appeared confused and stated he did not realize where he was, police said. The victim was released to hospital staff.

An update on his condition and/or his discharge information was not provided at press time.

Elmhurst AAUW announces ‘Dare to Dream’ scholarship winner The Elmhurst Area AAUW Branch has announced that Naybet Mendoza of Des Plaines is the recipient of its 2020 annual $1,000 Dare to Dream Scholarship.

Dare to Dream: Get Educated! is a one-day conference for Latina middle school girls and their mothers on a college campus. The conference focuses on the personal, professional, and financial value of education, particularly higher education. Following the conference, there is follow-up placement in a mentoring program.

The goal is to provide an educational vision for the futures of these girls and then to start them on a path to making their vision a reality.

Dare to Dream was founded by the AAUW Elmhurst Area Branch ten years ago and AAUW members continue to provide financial and volunteer support.

Naybet Mendoza attended Maine West High School, where many of her classes were at the Honors or AP level. Her school activities included Water Polo, Swimming, Cosmetology Club, LatinX Club and Spanish Honor Society. Naybet also spent many hours volunteering in her church, public library and Lee Manor Nursing Home. She has worked at the Park District and La Michoacana.

Naybet attended the Dare to Dream Conference in 8th grade and was inspired by the stories and attitudes

of the successful Hispanic women presenters. This experience helped to shape her perspective that “you control your own fate” and impacted how she lived her high school years.

Naybet’s intended major is Education. She hopes to attend the University of Illinois at Chicago.

She shared her memories of attending the Dare to Dream conference: “I remember the speakers clearly, talking about how they came into the United States barely knowing any English,” Naybet said. “They had overcome barriers like the warriors they were and I wanted to be like them. I still do. I listened to how they had fewer options than I do but

were able to succeed. They said there was no reason why I couldn’t succeed too. After the conference, my mother and I had many conversations together about the future and listening to my Mom’s insight about always working hard also inspired me.

“I was emboldened by the speakers at the conference, and here I am,

a step closer to my goal: becoming a teacher. I want to be able to encourage young girls. I want them to know that they can do anything their hearts desire. All they have to do, and all I have to do, as the speaker said to us ‘Dare to Dream: Get Educated!’”

Pack up the station wagon for a nostalgia-fueled road trip ‘The Great Midwestern Road Trip’ now open at Elmhurst History Museum

This year, more than ever, it is predicted that Midwesterners will take to the road for their summer vacations in record numbers to find adventure and relaxation close to home. Undoubtedly, those well-known destinations that have lured tourists for generations will find visitors from neighboring states crossing their borders to gain respite from a year that has had many tumultuous turns. From lakeside resorts and rustic cabins in places “up north,” to Lake Michigan beach towns and journeys farther down the road such as the Dakotas, Ozarks, and Boundary Waters—it would seem that the road trip has made a comeback.

So, it is rather timely—after months of closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic—that the Elmhurst History Museum opens the new exhibit, “The Great Midwestern Road Trip,” in a year that the old-fashioned road trip is having a moment. The exhibit is open from June 26 through October 11, 2020, and it takes a nostalgia-fueled journey through the joys of taking to the open road for the classic Midwest vacation experience in the 1940s through the 1970s. The show explores some of the iconic settings Chicago area families visited and what they encountered along the way—from roadside attractions and tourist traps to memorable resorts and restaurants.

Throughout the exhibit, visitors will learn about Midwest vacations through themes such as the rise of car culture; development of the interstate highway system; trip planning and budgeting; the “Green Book” guide for Black travelers; roadside billboards and advertising; and making “pit stops” at waysides and gas stations. Family movies and vacation photos, replicas of neon road signs, and a 1950s-era gas station vignette evoke vivid mem-

ories. Guests can mark vacation spots they’ve visited over different decades on a large map, and view a camping and fishing equipment display. Due to restrictions, the exhibit will feature “no-touch” displays; however, visitors will have the opportunity to take a 1946 vacation quiz and play road trip bingo to interact with the displays.

Road trip artifacts and memorabilia Some of the fascinating collectibles and curiosities featured in “The Great Midwestern Road Trip” exhibit include: • Mid-century travel brochures, posters and advertisements; • Kitschy souvenirs, from aprons to ash trays, commemorating tourist destinations across the Midwest; • Vintage cameras and equipment from the Elmhurst History Museum collection; • Eight-millimeter films, post cards and photos from family vacations shared by community members.

New online reservations and visitation procedures In response to the Restore Illinois COVID-19 pandemic restrictions and to protect visitors and staff, the Elmhurst History Museum has instated some new procedures for visiting the museum that will be in place until further notice: • Online reservations are required and can be made at elmhursthistory. org.

• Visit duration is limited to one hour.

• Only 15 guests per hour, maximum of five people per group. For larger groups, please call the museum to make arrangements at 630-833-1457.

• All patrons must wear face masks

and maintain a six-foot social distance at all times.

• Hand sanitizing stations will be readily available.

• Rigorous cleaning protocols have been enacted and high-touch points will be cleaned frequently by staff.

Police beat

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

Persons charged with domestic battery are not named in order to protect the privacy of victims.

Readers are reminded that an arrest does not constitute a conviction, and that subjects are considered innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Juveniles age 17-or-younger are not named.

June 23 A complainant near Route 83 and Lake told police at around 12:38 a.m. that while she was driving near the above area, she was followed by an unknown vehicle. The complainant reported her friend received two phone calls from an unknown male stating he was outside of the friend’s residence. The area was checked with no results.

Assault, battery

June 22 A complainant in the 200 block of Winthrop told police at around 10:57 p.m. that an unknown suspect threw a glass bottle at his house. The reporting officer observed a shattered glass bottle near the front door of the home. There was no damage to the complainant’s home and he did not wish to sign complaints. A search of the area for the suspect was met with negative results.

June 23 Police said officers responded to the 600 block of W. North at around 4:40 p.m. for a report of two suspects involved in a physical altercation.

The victim reported the suspect punched him after he asked him to leave him alone. The suspect fled the scene on a bicycle prior to officers’ arrival. Medics arrived on scene to treat the victim.

The case is pending investigation.

Criminal damage, criminal trespass June 17 A complainant in the 800 block of S. Route 83 told police at 10:35 a.m. that a suspect forced entry and removed several items from a storage unit. The complainant stated the items belonged to the suspect; however, access to the unit was revoked due to an unpaid balance. The complainant stated they are not sure if they will pursue charges at this time.

Domestic battery, domestic incident, disorderly conduct, damage to property, disturbance June 20 Juan A. Sosa, 53, and Luis Urias-Roque, 40, both of Addison, were charged with disorderly conduct-public urination in the 400 block of W. St. Charles at around 2:20 p.m.

DUI, DUI-drugs, illegal transportation of alcohol, possession of alcohol June 21 Natalia Gianesin, 19, of Northlake, was issued a citation for consumption of alcohol by a minor subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and North at around 1:08 a.m.

Douglas E. Morris, 25, of Carol Stream, was charged with DUI-drugs, illegal transportation of alcohol, speeding and driving without lights subsequent to a traffic stop near West and North at around 11:11 p.m.

June 20 Davell L. McGregory, 29, of Chicago, was charged with DUI-drugs, possession of cannabis in a vehicle, illegal transportation of alcohol, driving while license suspended, speeding and improper lane usage subsequent to a traffic stop near Roosevelt and Route 83 at around 1:08 a.m.

June 19 James S. Kennedy, 60, of Atlanta, Ga., was charged with DUI and making an improper left turn subsequent to a traffic stop near Second and Addison at around 11:48 p.m.

Pascual A. Payan, 56, of Stone Park, was charged with DUI, illegal transportation of alcohol, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and improper lane usage near North and Emory at around 11:18 p.m.

CALL 800-222-TIPS June 18 Yanez Ordaz, 25, of Bellwood, was issued citations for illegal transportation of alcohol, possession of cannabis in a vehicle and speeding near St. Charles and Poplar at around 4:29 p.m.

Harassment, threats

June 21 Police in the 700 block of N. Church said the suspect, a former colleague of the complainant, has been sending messages to the complainant via Facebook. The complainant does not want to have any contact with the suspect. An officer spoke with the suspect and advised him to cease all communication with the complainant.

Possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a controlled substance June 24 Paul Fullerton, 34, of Elmhurst, was charged with possession of adult-use cannabis in a vehicle, driving under the influence and violating a raised center median subsequent to a traffic stop near Third and Evergreen at around 1:55 a.m.

June 21 Mariah Gregory, 20, of Chicago, was issued citations for possession of adult-use cannabis in a vehicle, driving while license suspended, speeding, improper lane usage and a seat-belt violation subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Melrose at around 2:21 a.m.

Prostitution June 19 Lisa L. Randle, 35, of Bolingbrook, was charged with prostitution and massaging without a license in the 500 block of W. Grand at around 7:15 p.m. Police said the Elmhurst Police Department became aware of online postings for prostitution services at a hotel in Elmhurst. Randle was contacted and agreed to provide sexual services, according to police.

Suspicious circumstances June 24 A complainant in the 100 block of N. Myrtle told police at around 7:33 p.m. that he observed two male suspects pulling on his front door. A witness reported seeing the same suspects at the front door of a neighboring residence. The reporting officer spoke with the suspects who stated they were going door-to-door advertising maintenance work. One of the suspects stated they pulled on the handle of an exterior door to knock on the interior door.

Theft/burglary/ attempted theft or burglary/identity theft/ fraud/forgery/deceptive practice/obstruction/ robbery June 23-June 24 Burglary to a vehicle was reported in the 300 block of N. Maple. A victim told police that an unknown suspect(s) entered his unlocked vehicle and removed cash sometime between the above dates.

June 23 Burglary to a vehicle was reported at a store in the 300 block of W. Grand at around 5:51 p.m. Police said a reporting officer responded to the above location for a report of a delayed burglary to a vehicle. The complainant stated a vehicle and unknown suspect were seen entering the business lot. The suspect was seen taking a pressure washer and bicycle, and then leaving the scene in a silver Jeep.

Burglary to a vehicle was reported in the 500 block of S. Spring at around 5:38 p.m. A victim told police that an unknown suspect(s) entered her unlocked vehicle and stole her purse.

June 22-June 23 Theft was reported in the 100 block of S. Pick.

A reporting officer spoke with the complainant who reported her purse was missing from her home. The complainant believes her purse may have been taken while she walked to her neighbor’s house leaving her front door unlocked, with the purse visible through a glass door.

June 22 Theft of vehicle parts was reported in the 700 block of N. York at around 11:44 p.m. While on patrol, an officer observed two grey 2020 Mazda 3 vehicles which were up on jacks and were missing the rear tires and rims. An unlocked Hyundai Kona was missing its jack from inside the trunk. The officer left a message for the business to contact him regarding the incident.

June 15-June 22 Identity theft was reported in the 200 block of N. Addison. A victim told police that an unknown suspect(s) used his information to open an account with Sprint and ordered three phones sometime between the above dates. The unknown suspect then attempted to pick the items up at the victim’s apartment complex but was unsuccessful. The case is pending investigation.

June 20-June 21 Attempted burglary to a vehicle was reported near Riverside and Monroe. A victim told police that an unknown suspect cut the padlock on his parked semi-trailer and gained entry. Nothing was observed missing from the trailer.

June 7-June 18 Identity theft was reported in the 400 block of W. Fremont between the above dates. A victim told police he was contacted by The Illinois Department of Employment Security regarding an unemployment claim which was filed using his personal information. The victim stated he has not filed for unemployment benefits and would contact the Department of Unemployment Security to report the fraud.

June 12-June 16 Attempted theft by deception was reported between the above dates. A victim told police about receiving an email from a company requesting payment. The victim sent the payment, but later realized the email was a fraud. A reporting officer was able to contact Chase Bank and successfully freeze the account and return the funds to the victim.

June 11-June 12 Identity theft was reported in the 100 block of N. Walnut. A victim told police that an unknown suspect used the victim’s personal information to open a bank account sometime between the above dates. The victim contacted the bank to freeze the account.

Warrant arrest

June 22 Police said that subsequent to making contact with a suspicious subject near Kenilworth and Fullerton at around 2:53 a.m., it was learned that Diquoine R. Wells, 26, of Elmhurst, had a valid warrant from the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office.

June 20 Police said Aimee S. Hodges, 38, of St. Charles, was found to have a valid warrant from the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office subsequent to a traffic stop near Villa and North at around 2:48 a.m. Hodges also was issued citations for transportation of open alcohol, driving while using an electronic communication device, no valid driver’s license and no seat belt.

June 18 Police said Fidencio Munoz, 42, of Wood Dale, had an active warrant out of Bensenville Police Department near North and Route 83 at around 7:07 p.m. Munoz also was charged with illegal transportation of alcohol, speeding, driving while license suspended and no insurance.

COVID-19 updates for DuPage County As of 11 a.m. on Monday, June 29, there were 8,996 total cases among DuPage County residents, including 465 deaths. Since Saturday, there were 52 new cases and two deaths of persons with COVID-19 infection reported: One male in his 70s; One female in her 80s.

Bolingbrook man charged with reckless homicide

On Thursday, June 25, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Lombard Chief of Police Roy Newton announced that charges had been filed against a Bolingbrook man accused of causing a head-on crash that resulted in the death of Dulce Olivia Avila-Adame. A Felony Complaint filed on June 22, alleges one count of reckless homicide against Richard Kennedy, 54, of Bolingbrook.

On June 24, Judge Brian Telander issued a $50,000 with 10% to apply arrest warrant for Kennedy, who is currently receiving treatment for injuries he sustained in the crash. Kennedy has additionally been charged with misdemeanor speeding and driving too fast for conditions.

According to the complaint, it is alleged that on June 22, at approximately 5:38 p.m., Kennedy was driving his vehicle on Route 53 in Lombard in excess of the speed limit on a wet roadway when he crossed over

solid lane markings into oncoming traffic and crashed head-on into a vehicle driven by Avila-Adame, causing her death. Following the crash, Kennedy was transported to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries.

He has remained in the hospital since that time.

“It is alleged that Mr. Kennedy’s reckless actions caused a head-on collision that took the life of Dulce Olivia Avila-Adame,” Berlin said. “I would like to take this opportunity to remind the motoring public to please be careful, be patient and obey all rules of the road when driving.”

“This was an extremely sad event that did not have to happen,” Newton said. “I urge all drivers to use caution while driving. I too, would like to express my condolences to Dulce’s loved ones on their loss.”

Members of the public are reminded that these complaints contain only charges and are not proof of the defendant’s guilt.

Top crime news At fight, witness saw suspect with pistol; police find shell casings in area On June 20, police said officers responded to the report of a fight in the south parking lot of a hotel in the 900 block of Riverside at around 5:17 a.m. Upon arrival, numerous people and vehicles fled the area. No victim of a battery was located. Officers later were informed of an unknown suspect who brandished a pistol, and four shell casings were located in the area.

Police said Ciavirelli fled the scene prior to officers’ arrival but was later located and taken into custody.

DuPage County offices begin reopening to public

DuPage County’s recovery efforts continue and the offices have started to safely move forward on a path to normalcy. Slowly and safely, County officials are ramping up in-person employee attendance based on recommendations from the state and the local Health Department.

The safety of the staff and the public visiting County facilities remains the top priority. As such, social distancing practices will continue and will require employees to wear masks while in the office when not able to maintain proper separation.

The County will continue to encourage the public to utilize online or telephone interactions with its employees whenever possible.

The County will enhance its cleaning efforts to ensure all surfaces are cleaned on a regular basis. Officials remain focused on implementing hospital cleaning standards in our buildings.

Staff have also installed plexiglass barriers in departments that see higher public traffic. The safety of the employees and visitors to the County is paramount.

On the morning of June 22, officers were dispatched to an apartment located in Willowbrook for a gunshot victim. Upon their arrival, officers found the victim suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest.

The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment and is expected to recover.

It is alleged that while the de-

fendant was handling the gun, his mother attempted to disarm him at which time the gun discharged, striking the victim in the chest. It is further alleged that as the victim was about to be transported, the defendant punched a sheriff’s deputy in the face and placed another sheriff’s deputy in a chokehold from behind and attempted to steal his firearm.

“It is alleged that the defendant’s recklessness endangered his friend’s life,” Berlin said. “Additionally, the allegations that the defendant then

physically attacked a deputy at the scene and tried to disarm another deputy I find particularly troubling.

This type of behavior will not be tolerated, and anyone accused of such behavior will quickly find themselves facing serious felony charges.

The defendant was scheduled to have a court appearance July 1 in front of Judge Anthony Coco.

How an infectious disease physician will spend the summer of 2020 A guest column from Elmhurst Hospital We’re starting the summer in Illinois on a positive note: the numbers of COVID-19 cases are decreasing in our state.

That’s great news: it means that 10 weeks of separation has resulted in countless lives saved, but it does not mean the virus is gone or that cases won’t escalate again.

What does it mean that COVID-19 cases are decreasing in Illinois?

After SARS-2 CoV infects someone it takes on average 5 days (range 2-12 days) to get symptoms and another 5-10 before the symptoms are severe enough to require hospitalization. There is a twoweek lag from time of exposure to hospitalization.

Schools closed in March, just when the earliest community transmission was recognized, followed by bars, restaurants and other business offices to curb the spread of COVID-19. We first saw travelers from Europe, Asia and other hard-hit states getting sick.

Within two weeks, a surge of patients with COVID-19, in need of oxygen and ventilators, filled hospitals. They were infected two weeks earlier at churches, hair salons, family functions and other events, before the stay-at-home order started.

In April, we saw essential workers and their families getting sick. This was followed by outbreaks at several nursing homes that affected residents and staff. The most recent cases were clusters at workplaces. All these groups got infected during the stay-athome period because they could not stay home.

During the first two weeks of June, we discharged far more COVID-19 patients than we were admitting and now we only have a handful of patients left, most of whom were admitted weeks ago and are still in need of ICU care.

Let’s celebrate the many thousands of lives saved by the heroic efforts of simply staying home.

Let’s take advantage of the summer months to spend time outdoors where the wind blows the virus away. I will be enjoying hikes, bike rides, the occasional run and spending time with my family in the back yard.

My children, who are all in their 20s, have taken my heed. They are limiting their face-to-face interactions to only the most important people in their lives. Fortunately, work and school are still all online. My wife must work outside, but she wears a mask at all times and carries a small bottle of hand sanitizer.

The less the virus spreads this summer, the less chance it can escalate in the fall and winter. By then, we may have greater supply of antivirals, more research into other medications and be closer to a vaccine.

As we brace ourselves for a return to normal, it’s not going to be normal.

It’s not time to let your guard down. It only takes one unprotected exposure to get infected.

Taking the mask off at lunch while eating with co-workers is risky. If it’s an exposure in an office to one person and that person self-isolates, that’s only one more infection. But if it’s an exposure in a social gathering or in a crowded building, that could be an outbreak leading to a chain of new infections, hospitalizations and deaths.

This summer, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will launch an 18-month nationwide COVID-19 antibody study to better understand the immune response to COVID-19 and whether it diminishes over time.

The antibody test can also help identify individuals who may be eligible to donate a part of their blood called convalescent plasma, which contains antibodies against the virus, and may help treat those who are seriously ill from the virus.

Edward-Elmhurst Health, in conjunction with Versiti, Inc., is looking for patients who have recovered from COVID-19 and would be interested in donating plasma. The donor requirements for donating plasma are similar to those for donating blood, but also include documentation of a previous positive COVID-19 molecular (PCR) test and a clinical history of no symptoms for at least 14 days.

The process for donating plasma is very similar to donating blood.

Ruth Strand posters reveal insights on learning from home The Elmhurst History Museum and Elmhurst Heritage Foundation present the Ruth Strand Poster Contest each year by inviting young Elmhurst students to share their favorite scenes from Elmhurst’s history. This spring, the contest morphed into a slightly different activity where children were encouraged to share their experiences of learning from home during this unusual and historic school year. Twenty-two participants of all ages submitted digital entries for this year’s Ruth Strand Poster Activity, and a few of them are pictured here. Participants received a $5 Elmhurst City Centre Gift certificate supported by the Elmhurst Heritage Foundation. Another First Lady of Elmhurst…Jean (Ohrman) Haselhorst

By Genie Urick If it weren’t for the leadership of Jean Haselhorst, there might be neither a Bandwagon in Wilder Park nor the old-fashioned street lamps lighting the way on the Prairie Path in Jean Haselhorst the evenings. Jean Haselhorst served as President and Secretary of the People For Elmhurst Parks Foundation (P.E.P.) for all the years that the organization existed (1988-1998). She spearheaded many campaigns, which initiated projects, and she helped raise the money to fund them. Jean also served as Pres-

ident of the Elmhurst Park District Citizens Advisory Commission and once mentioned to me, “I’ve been a member forever it seems!” She has worked diligently for park improvements on behalf of all Elmhurst residents for most of her life.

Born in Harvey, Illinois in 1918, Jean Ohrman moved with her parents, brother, and sister to the Elmhurst area and attended York High School and Elmhurst College. In 1939 she married Harry William Haselhorst. Harry’s family first came to Elmhurst in 1921 and lived at 396 S. West Avenue. Jean and Harry lived as newlyweds in Villa Park and, in 1945, purchased the home of Harry’s parents. Jean and her husband had eight children – six boys: Ward,

Keith, Peter, Scott, Gary and Kent, and two girls: Susan and Beth. They all grew up happily in the West Avenue house. In 1961 Elmhurst Memorial Hospital named the Haselhorsts “Family of the Year.” All eight children had been born at the hospital.

In 1963 Press Publications selected Jean Haselhorst as Suburban Homemaker of the Year. Jean’s main interests at the time were her family, home, and volunteering. Her many service contributions included selling donuts for the Salvation Army, selling peanuts for Kiwanis Club, and “tagging” for Misericordia. In 1949 Jean was elected President of the Elmhurst Junior Woman’s Club.

Later she again would serve as President of the Elmhurst Evening Wom-

an’s Club (1995-97) after being a member for more than 30 years.

With her help, the club and other groups purchased the very first civic bandshell for the community. When that one eventually needed to be replaced, she again enthusiastically raised an astronomical amount of money. This second state-of-the-art bandwagon is currently located in Wilder Park.

Jean also was active in Campfire Girls and PTA. She and her husband were organizers/chaperones of the York High School Bandor Club. Jean jokingly told me that when it came to volunteering, Harry used to ask her if she “didn’t know how to say no!”

school age young people at the Community Congregational Church for years.

“We devoted every Sunday evening for many years to having fun with our young people who still remember us,” Jean recalled. “Some became ministers and some served in the Peace Corps. We were so proud of them!”

Jean received a precious note from one of the parents, which she shared with me. It reads: “We think back to all the time and work you and Harry did with and for the young people of C.C.C. The kids respected both of you so didn’t question the values that you expected of them and which they often challenged at home. You and Harry had a real gift and you shared it too.” Jean says this heartfelt note means more to her than any of the wonderful plaques or citations ever given to her.

Jean receives the Jaycees D.S.A. In 1989 Jean Haselhorst was chosen by the Elmhurst Jaycees to receive the Distinguished Service Award. I remember the evening because we televised the formal occasion. Jean was recognized by many groups for helping with many community projects including the creation of the “Spring Road Oasis” on the Prairie Path. (Not once but twice – when the original wooden Gazebo later was destroyed by fire everyone involved was devastated. But Jean started all over again to raise necessary funds to build the present-day gazebo.) With other P.E.P. members she personally laid bricks at the site.

Jean helped plant disease-free trees and saw that the drinking fountain (donated by the Elmhurst Kiwanis) was put on the path.

She also was instrumental in promoting the installation of the old Elmhurst street lamps to light the Prairie Path at night. One of the presenters at the award ceremony was Mick Pope, Director of the Elmhurst Park District. He recognized Jean’s dedication to the Park District and her many achievements then stated, “Her hallmark is giving, not receiving…

Jean has an abundance of modesty… she is a high energy doer! She has a positive attitude… Jean, I’m very proud to be your friend.”

The last speaker was Jean’s husband, Harry, and I’ll never forget what he said when he stepped up to the microphone.

“I want to fill you in behind the scenes. With all the nights that she’s out, I want to tell you the truth. I have never missed a meal and my house is nice and clean, despite all the work she does on the outside!” Then Harry turned to Jean and gave her a kiss while the audience cheered! Jean and Harry Haselhorst were also celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary that very same evening.

York grad Abigail Pettineo awarded Rotary scholarship Annual Service Above Self for 2020 presented by Elmhurst club

The Elmhurst Rotary Club has awarded the $16,000 Service Above Self Scholarship to Abigail Pettineo, a graduating senior from York High School.

Abigail Abigail focused Pettineo her years at York helping others through volunteering, service projects, and community-based initiatives.

Among her several ‘service above self’ efforts, as co-president of Key Club, a student service organization at York, Abigail started the first annual Pajama Program drive. She led this effort to bring together 10 clubs, departments and sports teams to collect more than 300 pairs of new pajamas for children in the foster care

system.

According to Elmhurst Rotary’s Dan Kunesh, the Club’s Scholarship Committee Chairperson, Abigail is preparing to attend the University of Illinois at Chicago on a pre-medicine track with the goal of becoming a pediatrician. Elmhurst Rotary has a long-standing commitment of helping deserving students like Abigail attend college. Since 1955, more than 400 students from IC Catholic Prep, Timothy Christian and York Community high schools have received more than $500,000 in scholarships.

Dan added that the Club received 12 applications for this year’s award.

Applications for the 2021 Service Above Self Scholarship will be accepted in December 2020 via the Club’s website, elmhurstrotary.com.

IDVA promotes Operation Rising Spirit

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Illinois’ veterans are unable to meet with friends and family members since visiting restrictions are in place at state veterans’ homes to curb exposure to the virus.

“It is clear that the unprecedented situation we are navigating related to the pandemic warranted a commonsense update to our election law for the upcoming election by making a vote by mail option more accessible to all Illinoisans and enhancing safety measures to promote social distancing,” said Conroy. “This change will help mitigate any future resurgence of COVID-19 cases which could arise down the road and is exclusive only to the 2020 General Election.”

New guidelines released for return to in-person education

Illinois released new guidelines for schools, colleges and universities to return to in-person learning in the fall, but leaders warned those plans could change if health metrics related to the COVID-19 pandemic stop improving.

“This fall will not be business as usual, and we will update our guidance as needed,” State Superintendent of Education Carmen Ayala said during a news conference in Chicago. “In response to challenging and changing public health conditions, schools and districts must be prepared to return to remote learning if the virus surges again.”

Students and teachers will be required to wear face coverings if they are medically able, gatherings in one place will be limited to no more than 50 people and schools must adhere to stricter cleaning and disinfecting guidelines as well as conduct regular symptom checks.

Gov. JB Pritzker said at the news conference every district must develop its own plan based on those guidelines.

Ayala added districts and individual schools will soon send additional information to parents and students.

Pritzker said the Illinois Emergency Management Agency will provide public K-12 districts in Illinois with 2.5 million cloth face masks, allowing

schools to provide one to all students and staff.

Universities and community colleges will have similar guidelines for a fall reopening, including social distancing and physical spacing requirements, hand sanitizing stations, face covering requirements and symptom monitoring. Schools are also developing policies around traffic flow, cleaning of public spaces and staggered schedules for the use of laboratories, auditoriums and other group facilities, according to guidelines.

If someone in a school tests positive, those who were in close contact with them— that is, within six feet for 15 to 30 minutes without a face covering, according to Dr. Ngozi Ezike, director of the Illinois Department of Public Health—would be expected to quarantine for 14 days.

Pritzker said local and county health departments will play a major role in deciding a path forward when such a positive test occurs.

Pritzker first ordered all public and private schools, including colleges and universities, to close for in-person instruction on March 13 and on June 4, schools were allowed to offer limited in-person instruction and summer school programs as part of Phase 3 of the reopening plan.

Ezike said the reopening being allowed this fall is the result of significant declines in new cases, deaths and hospitalizations since the peak of the pandemic in Illinois.

Those declines, she said, are the result of the vast majority of Illinoisans following basic safety guidelines that include frequent hand-washing, wearing face coverings when in public and practicing social distancing.

The fact that the state reports about 20,000 to 30,000 test results daily helps as well, she said. Nearly 1.4 million tests were completed in Illinois since the pandemic began.

In advance of schools reopening, Ezike strongly encouraged parents and guardians to make sure their children are up to date on their vaccina-

tions and that all Illinoisans get caught up on basic wellness procedures, including cancer screenings. She noted there have been steep declines in those procedures since the pandemic began.

“We need to make sure that the kids get checked out by their providers and get their life-saving immunizations,” she said. “Yes, there could be another surge of COVID-19 in the fall or perhaps earlier, but let’s make sure we take this opportunity now to get to our doctors, let’s get our immunizations, let’s get our health screenings, let’s get as healthy as we can. Your baseline health status affects how you fare against this virus.”

Pritzker also said the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security, or CARES, Act, provided $510 million in relief directly to school districts to address local needs in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Dr. Ayala and I are encouraging all districts to use this funding to close the digital divide by providing devices and internet connectivity and are directing the majority of the remaining funding to purchasing laptops, tablets, virtual coaching for new teachers and internet connectivity to advance a vision of equity for our schools and keep our kids on track for success,” the governor said.

Pritzker’s office said the Illinois State Board of Education will use another $54.1 million in CARES act funding to provide funding to schools in six categories: laptops and tablets, internet connectivity, virtual coaching for teachers, professional development, and support for entities that cannot receive direct funds.

American Legion baseball team opens season in Michigan Galanis hits grand slam; Nifty double relay play cuts down runner in finale

The Elmhurst American Legion Post 187 baseball team is officially back in business.

The Muddogs headed up to Michigan recently to kick off its season with a quartet of games. While Elmhurst went 0-4 in Michigan, coach Mike Biondo saw some positives.

“The first day was tough on our boys,” he said. “With our very first games of the year being over 90 degrees back to back, our bodies weren’t ready for it, and it showed in the second game. But they kept on digging deep, trying to find ways back into the game. It was good to be on the field. Once we begin to take care of the baseball, eliminate walks and get our timing down with hitting, I believe this team will be very tough to compete with.”

Elmhurst opened play at Stevensville, Michigan against Hudson (Michigan) Post 180 and dropped a 10-6 decision. Hudson led 10-1 after three innings before Elmhurst scored five runs in the fifth inning to inch closer. The Muddogs had four hits.

Conor Baxter, Jimmy O’Donnell (Leyden), Jake Galanis (Leyden) and Ricky Saucedo (Fenton) each had a hit with Galanis hitting a grand-slam home run. O’Donnell and Saucedo each had an RBI. O’Donnell’s hit was a double. Ryan

Malek (IC Catholic Prep) stole two bases. Ethan Pieniazek and Jason O’Donnell (Leyden) pitched for Elmhurst.

In a 10-1 loss to Stevensville, Elmhurst found itself down 8-0 after three innings. The Muddogs had three hits. Malek, Baxter and Jimmy O’Donnell each had a hit.

Malek stole another base. Galanis took the loss on the mound, while Malek also pitched.

On the second day of action, Elmhurst dropped a 14-2 game to Valparaiso (Indiana) Post 94. Valpo scored nine runs in the third inning to put the game out of reach. Elmhurst had five hits and issued 12 walks.

Aldo Flores (Leyden), Galanis, Brennan Fisher (IC Catholic Prep), Jason O’Donnell and Pieniazek (Willowbrook) each had a hit. Galanis’ hit was a double. Jason O’Donnell stole a base. Jimmy O’Donnell, JB Perez (Leyden) and Nick DeSimone (Fenton) pitched. O’Donnell took the loss. He struck out six in two innings.

Elmhurst then dropped a 7-5 decision to Three Oaks (Michigan) Post 204. Three Oaks led 2-1 after two before Elmhurst scored three runs in the third to tie the game at 4-4. Three Oaks went up 6-4 in the fourth and Elmhurst got as close as 6-5 in the bottom of the fourth.

Three Oaks had 16 hits in the game.

Galanis hit .400 on the trip with a double, the grand slam and six RBI. Fisher hit .333 with two doubles and an RBI and Saucedo also homered in Michigan.

Biondo cited strong defensive play in the final game against Three Oaks. On a ball hit into the left-center gap that went to the fence for

what appeared to be a triple, left fielder Saucedo threw to Galanis, the shortstop, who relayed to Baxter at third base to throw out the runner.

“It was a great relay play,” Biondo said. “It was a big play at a key moment in the game when we were only down by one.”

Elmhurst then welcomed Stevensville to the area for a doubleheader played at Redmond Park in Bensenville. Stevensville won the opener 1-0. Stevensville scored its only run in the fifth inning and had five hits, while Elmhurst had two hits. Flores and Fisher each had a hit.

Fisher went 2-for-2 with a run scored, while Baxter and Galanis each had a hit. Fisher and Baxter each had a double. Fisher and Galanis each stole a base. Jimmy O’Donnell and Pieniazek pitched for Elmhurst.

Elmhurst was scheduled to play Pirates Baseball Chicago 18U earlier this week at Community Park in Addison.

Emeralds 14U plays first game of season The Elmhurst Emeralds’ 14-U softball team played its first competitive event of the season on Saturday, June 27. The Emeralds played an exhibition doubleheader against the Roselle Rockers at Plunkett Park.

Roselle won both games, prevail-

ing 5-4 in the opener and 10-0 in the second contest. The participants maintained social distancing as best as possible during the doubleheader.

Players did not use the dugouts, and the umpire called balls and strikes from behind the pitcher’s mound.

Jean Haselhorst was honored again in 1997, when she was named an Outstanding Elmhurst Woman

by the Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce & Industry.

“People tease me because I think everyone is a very nice person,” Jean once said to me. “They say that if I ever said I didn’t like someone – that person must be terrible I believe there is good in everyone, we just have to bring it out. I have a strong belief in God and His guidance and love. I feel grateful to Him for my many blessings and I want to make life as worthwhile as possible.”

A fond farewell to her beloved City And Jean was very good at making life worthwhile for many Elmhurst residents. In 1998 Jean had to make a decision. As a widow, it was becoming difficult to maintain the old family house on West Avenue, so her children helped her move to a new townhouse overlooking a beautiful little lake in Aurora.

“It’s been a hard thing to do!” she said, “It’s not the same as Elmhurst.” And likewise, we in Elmhurst miss her – a most loving person and loyal volunteer.

At Silverado Grill you can enjoy dining al fresco even when the weather is rainy We have an outdoor patio that is completely undercover, including an awning so you don’t have to run indoors on a cloudy day or when sprinkles surprise us.

New this year, we also have additional outdoor dining under our tent for those who want more fresh air. With plenty of parking available, dining al fresco at Silverado is the perfect place for gathering with family and friends all summer and into the fall.

The entire menu — from those tasty hand-carved steaks, juicy burgers, gourmet salads, and cold beer — is available to outdoor enthusiasts.

All steaks are carved on premises. All top sirloin cuts, strip cuts and filet cuts can be increased to the size the diner prefers. So if the 11-ounce top sirloin just doesn’t seem right to you, ask for a 16-oz. cut. It will be done on the spot. Steaks are hand-cut daily, so whatever you order, you know it will be fresh.

Hours are 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Monday through Thursday, 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday, Saturday 11:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. and Sunday 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Reservations are recommended, especially on the weekend. Call (630) 833-1602. Hours may vary so call ahead.

HB Jones boasts Elmhurst largest outdoor dining area with seating for over 140 and a covered outdoor bar. In addition, to the large deck, Jones patio also boasts a fireplace, 2 giant TVs, stunning floral beauty and a sand pit seating area.

The elusive Mr. Jones commented, “The out-door bar is like one I came upon in Panama, and just had to re-create it! The bar is equally enjoyable from both the outside of the Greenhouse or from the inside.

Customers love it and it’s been busy since the day we opened it.” Jones went on: “The Patio is a great place to come out and is really helpful during the current outdoor only situation as we are still able to sit 100 people.

Thursday’s at HB Jones features half price on all 80 of its craft, domestic, imported and Draft beers.

Also, on Thursdays, Jones features live music from a rotation of local superstars. Thursdays at HB Jones have become an Elmhurst happening not to be missed.

Customers and passersby have commented on the lavish floral landscaping at Jones! Mr. Jones has brought things back from his travels and much of this is on display on the patio. He has also sent over his personal landscapers to add exotic plants and flowers, so the patio has become a true outdoor Oasis. We welcome you to come out relax and have something to eat and drink on the patio.

If you’re looking for a Steak or tremendous Fish dish, then try Victory Meat and Seafood. Victory has an expanded outdoor area and is just the place to go for its signature cocktails, Brick Chicken or Chilean Sea Bass! Victory is located in downtown Elmhurst at 116 N. York Street.
