As I have previously stated, I believe it is a mistake to combine Elmhurst and DuPage County into the Restore Illinois Northeast Region. I will continue to advocate for a more geographically segmented approach to open safely. We must trust and help our residents and businesses.

You have mentioned that Illinois has 102 counties. As you are aware, each county in the state already has an elected representative government in place. These local government bodies have been successful in addressing the needs of the communities they serve. We need to rely on this infrastructure and trust that a safe, science based and logical plan can be implemented at this local level.

I believe that residents and small business owners will respond better to an open dialogue versus threats from their elected officials/government.

I would like to reiterate my appreciation for your hard work during this crisis and look forward to working with you on reopening our state.

Editor’s note: Following is a letter sent to Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker from Elmhurst Mayor Steve Morley.

Dear Governor Pritzker, I hope that this letter finds you well and that you and your staff are safe and healthy.

As a follow-up to my previous letter dated May 11th, I’d like to reiterate my request to open a dialog to discuss your Restore Illinois Plan.

We are all facing this crisis for the first time and I believe any plan to reopen should be considered a “working plan” which allows for input and ongoing improvements. I believe that a flexible plan that allows for input will be more successful than one that is dictated to us.

Many small business owners are currently faced with two choices: go out of business, lose their life’s work and the ability to provide for their families or defy their government and open their business in an effort to survive. Our residents and business owners should not have to make this choice. Let’s work together to create a safe third choice. “This decision was not made lightly, and we understand that many people will be disappointed,” said Executive Director Jim Rogers. “So many families look forward to the hot summer days of swimming at the pools with family and friends, and this summer we won’t be able to provide that for them. In addition, as the largest employer of youth in the community, we also understand the huge impact caused by not hiring seasonal staff. But safety and sanitation have to take priority, and I hope folks understand why we had to make this decision.”

According to Rogers, it takes approximately five weeks to prep the pools for opening, which includes filling and treating the water; cleaning and setting up the facility; recruiting, hiring, and training more than 100 lifeguards; onboarding admissions and guest services staff; and purchasing the necessary equipment and supplies. In a normal year, the pool is filled and guards are hired and trained by mid-May, but due to the stay-at-home order, staff has been unable to start any of the necessary prep work.

In addition, in order to operate East End and Smalley Pools, staff would need to comply with social distancing guidelines, gathering limits, and cleaning/disinfecting guidelines, many of which have yet to be fully developed for swimming pools. Bills extend telehealth executive order, ease application process for some public insurance

A pair of health care bills expanding telehealth resources during the COVID-19 pandemic passed the Illinois House of Representatives on Saturday—with one passing the Senate and the other not being taken up as lawmakers wrapped up their emergency special session.

Senate Bills 671 and 1864 cleared the House unanimously on Saturday evening, 112-0 and 113-0, respectively. SB 1864 then passed the Senate, 50-3, with a trio of Republicans in dissent. SB 671 did not come up for a Senate vote before lawmakers adjourned.

The initiatives respond to health care needs brought on by the COVID-19 crisis, chiefly the increased need for affordable and accessible telehealth services as social distancing guidelines and other restrictions have kept people in their homes.

SB 671 extends an executive order issued in March by Gov. JB Pritzker requiring public and pri-

vate insurers to cover in-network telehealth services as if they had happened in a doctor’s office. That order also restricts the fees that insurers can charge for telehealth.

The bill extends the order’s provisions until the end of the year.

In floor debate Saturday afternoon, Rep. Mary Flowers, D-Chicago, argued SB 671 should include language giving a patient the option to be seen in person, such as in an emergency room, if he or she feels it is medically necessary.

House sponsor Rep. Deb Conroy, D-Villa Park, said that in Phase 3 of Illinois’ reopening plan—expected to take effect Friday—many doctor’s offices are likely to reopen to in-person care.

An earlier version of SB 1864 had similar language until lawmakers removed it Saturday evening that would have required health insurers to cover the costs of all in-network telehealth services during the pandemic. Those services would also have been exempt in most cases from cost-sharing measures like copayments or deductibles.

That provision was opposed by insurance and anti-abortion interests.

Additional language also removed would have qualified “sub-

stance use disorder professionals and clinicians” as health care professionals under state’s Telehealth Act during COVID-19.

The version of SB 1864 headed to Pritzker’s desk, however, loosens certain regulations for the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services, the state’s Medicaid agency, during the COVID-19 public health emergency.

That includes making it easier for people to prove eligibility for the federal Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) and the similar state program, All Kids. It also allows applicants to submit applications over the phone in lieu of a physical signature.

SB 1864 also calls for two state agencies to study how state government can help people who lack health insurance.

The bill instructs the Illinois Department of Insurance and IDHFS to study how “to make health insurance more affordable for low-income and middle-income residents.” The bill cites that 835,000 Illinoisans are uninsured.

The departments would have to submit their findings—which would also collect data on the geography, race and ethnicity of the uninsured—by the end of Febru-

ary 2021. The report would inform Pritzker and the Legislature of the “design, costs, benefits and implementation” of possible state options.

The bill also establishes a state task force on kidney disease prevention that would “develop a plan to raise awareness about early detection, promote health equity and reduce the burden of kidney disease through the state” by the end of next year.

The three Senate Republicans who opposed SB 1864 were Sens.

Chuck Weaver of Peoria, Dan McConchie of Hawthorn Woods and Sue Rezin of Morris.

In April, Pritzker issued an executive order establishing a patient monitoring system for people with COVID-19 symptoms or who may have been exposed to the disease.

People who are sick but do not need to go to the hospital can have daily virtual visits with health workers.

Those patients are also entitled to “wellness kits” with medical supplies.

The Illinois Department of Human Services also launched a free mental health hotline, Call4Calm.

By texting “TALK” or “HABLAR” to 55202, people will receive a call from a community mental health counselor.

A message from the Elmhurst Park District “As you’re aware, the stay-at-home order has been extended through the end of May. The District continues to monitor information and waits for additional guidance from the Governor, CDC, and Illinois Department of Public Health, but because social distancing and restrictions on groups larger than 10 will remain in place throughout the summer months, a number of important decisions had to be made. As a result, the following changes will occur as we continue to focus on safety, security and sanitation for park users and staff.

• Outdoor pools will not open for the 2020 season. Everyone who purchased a season pass will be able to carry the pass over to use during the 2021 season. More information on the outdoor pools will be shared tomorrow.

• Registration will remain closed for all summer programming. When we are able to safely reopen, the focus will be on programs and offerings that best meet the community’s needs, including day camps, adult fitness and use of the parks. Then, as soon as it’s safe and reasonable to do so, we will offer additional programming. We will continue to post updates on www.epd. org related to programming.

• No picnic rentals or facility rentals will be taken for June.

• Golf at Sugar Creek Golf Course will still be allowed and will follow all required safety guidelines, including online pre-payment.

• All community events through the end of June have been cancelled, including Adventure Day and Movies in the Park. It is our hope to reschedule the 100th Anniversary Community Picnic, scheduled for June 6, to a later

date.

• Parks and trails will remain open for walking, jogging, and biking under the current social distancing guidelines. However, playgrounds, tennis courts, basketball courts, the skate park and athletic fields remain closed at the current time.

• Seasonal brochures will be available online only until further notice to provide maximum flexibility and cost savings.

“During this stay-at-home order, the District is not able to provide the majority of services and programs to the community, and we project the losses to be more than $6 million in non-tax dollars. More than half of the District’s overall funding is generated from user fees, memberships and facility rental fees. As a result, we have instituted a hiring freeze, frozen any vacant positions, deferred more than $1 million in capital projects and will need to furlough many full-time and nearly all of our part-time staff on May 31 who make those programs and offerings possible “We greatly look forward to the lifting of the stay at home order so that the District, along with everyone else, can begin to transition back to a new “normal”, which we anticipate will allow for greater use of the parks and a gradual re-introduction of programs and services. The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

Persons charged with domestic battery are not named in order to protect the privacy of victims. Readers are reminded that an arrest does not constitute a conviction, and that subjects are considered innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Juveniles age 17-or-younger are not named.

Criminal damage to property, criminal trespassing May 16 John Cosgrove, 37, of Evanston, was charged with criminal trespass to a vehicle in the 600 block of N. County Line at around 4:18 a.m.

Police said officers responded to the above location for the report of a vehicle theft in progress. According to police, a victim stated that Cosgrove stole his vehicle and brought it back to the scene.

Domestic battery, domestic incident, disorderly conduct, disturbance May 19 A 23-year-old Elmhurst man was charged with two counts of domestic battery in the 500 block of W. St. Charles at around 8:58 p.m.

Police said the suspect shoved the victim and threw her possessions outside the apartment.

The suspect then grabbed both of her arms and locked her out of the apartment. Police said the victim had visible red marks on her arms.

Police said that subsequent to an investigation of an activated fire alarm in the 100 block of W. Virginia at around 3:01 a.m., it was discovered that Nicholas Whelan, 28, and Jessica Oglesby, 25, both of Elk Grove Village, had discharged a fire extinguisher in the lower level of an apartment building, which caused the fire alarm to activate. Whelan was charged with disorderly conduct. According to police, Oglesby was found to have a valid warrant and also charged with disorderly conduct.

May 18 A reporting officer met with a complainant who stated that a victim began throwing objects around the house and hitting her father. The victim’s parents requested a private ambulance to transport the victim to a hospital.

May 14 A 31-year-old Elmhurst man was charged with two counts of domestic battery and violation of bail bond in the 600 block of W. third at around 6:10 p.m. Police said the suspect broke the victim’s iPhone, grabbed her and pushed her into a table, which resulted in a laceration on her elbow.

DUI, DUI-drugs, illegal transportation of alcohol May 17 Kevin Erdenberger, 22, of Park Ridge, was charged with DUI, possession of ammunition without FOID, unlawful possession of cannabis and improper parking in the roadway near Route 83 and North at around 7:51 a.m.

May 16 Anthony Limardo, 28, of Northlake, was charged with DUI-drugs, endangering the life of a child and driving while license suspended near York and Diversey at around 10:14 p.m.

Fleeing and eluding May 19 While on patrol near Bryan and Madison at around 2:27 a.m., officers observed a vehicle parked in the center of the roadway with the driver and passenger doors open. The suspects ran from residential driveways, entered the vehicle and fled the scene at a high rate of speed. It was learned that the vehicle was reported stolen.

An officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but discontinued pursuing the vehicle after it fled at a high rate of speed northbound on York.

Harassment, threats May 12 A reporting officer met with a complainant in the 900 block of S. York at around 11:45 a.m.

The complainant told police that she believes a suspect described as a black male around 25 years old is stalking her. The complainant stated she used to live with the suspect, but moved out.

She told police she has seen the suspect multiple times and believes he is following her. The suspect has not contacted her or approached her.

The complainant was told to contact police if she sees him again.

Possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia May 14 Police said that subsequent to a traffic crash near Lake and Route 83 at around 6:26 p.m., Maddie Bossert, 24, of Dwight, Ill., was found to be DUI and in possession of heroin, while Kurt Varney, 35, of Boynton, Fla., was found to be in possession of heroin and drug paraphernalia.

Bossert was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance, DUI-drugs, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving too fast for conditions and no insurance. Varney was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Suspicious circumstances May 18-May 19 A school custodian in the 200 block of Emory told police that several windows on the school building were found ajar. Footprints were observed on the floor leading away from the window into a classroom. Several articles of clothing were found in a classroom and also outside of the building. Nothing was reported missing from the building.

May 14 Police said a suspect described as a black male was observed taking pictures inside a store in the 100 block of E. Schiller at around 3:41 p.m. The suspect was acting suspiciously, according to police, and upon seeing store employees watching

April 20-May 20 Identity theft was reported in the 800 block of Hillside. A victim reports that an unknown suspect used his personal information to open credit accounts with Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile between the above dates. The victim has an outstanding bill with Sprint for $5,080.52 in fraudulent charges.

May 19 Burglary to a vehicle was reported in the 400 block of Addison at around 11:07 a.m. A complainant told police that a RedMax blower was missing from a trailer. The complainant stated he saw a suspect described as a black male in his late teens or early 20s near the trailer, and when the complainant yelled, the suspect entered the passenger side of a vehicle which fled the scene eastbound on Fremont toward York along with a second vehicle.

May 14 Theft was reported in the 400 block of Hill at around 8:43 a.m. Police said three teen-age suspects—two described as white females and the other described as a black male—stole a package from their neighbor’s house. The suspects fled the scene in a white SUV, possibly a Dodge Durango or a Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Commercial burglary was reported at a mobile phone dealership in the 300 block of S. Route 83 at around 3:08 p.m. A complainant told police that two suspects—both described as black males in their mid-20s—entered the store, inquired if the store sold iPads and proceeded to rip 11 iPhones and two Apple watches from the display counters.

May 13-May 14 A victim in the 600 block of W. Third told police at around 4:52 p.m. that he believes a suspect is using his bank account information to make purchases. Further investigation is pending.

May 13 Identity theft was reported in the 500 block of W. Second at around 3:19 p.m. A victim told police that while reviewing his bank account, he observed three unauthorized transactions totaling approximately $30. The victim believes his former roommate may have taken his debit card and used it without permission. The case is pending investigation.

May 18 Theft was reported in the 100 block of N. Berteau at around 11:19 a.m. A complainant told police that her daughter witnessed a suspect described as a white male in his 50s removed a package from the front stairs of the residence.

Officers checked the area with no results. The complainant does not know which service made the delivery and is unsure what was in the package.

April 30-May 1 Theft by deception was reported in the 100 block of S. York. A complainant told police that she received an email from an unknown suspect posing as her landlord. The email requested that she change the way she typically pays her rent and provided a new bank account sometime between the above dates. The victim sent the payment to the bank account and subsequently realized she was the victim of a scam.

May 17-May 18 Theft by deception was reported in the 300 block of Arlington. A victim told police that she attempted to rent a vacation property through a website. The victim communicated with a person whom she surmised to be the property’s representative. The victim wired money to the suspect. The victim later discovered she had used a fraudulent website and wired money to an imposter because the website didn’t have any history of her transaction.

April 17 Identity theft was reported in the 100 block of S. York at around 3:45 p.m. A complainant told police that an unknown suspect used her Social Security number and filed a fraudulent 2019 tax return. The victim received a letter form the Illinois Department of Revenue which informed her of the fraudulent use of her Social Security number.

May 16-May 17 Burglary to a vehicle was reported in the 800 block of S. Poplar sometime between the above dates. A complainant told police that an unknown suspect(s) entered his unlocked vehicle and stole a wine kit.

May 15-May 16 Theft of vehicle parts was reported in the 400 block of W. Lake. A reporting officer met with the victim, who stated that he parked his semi-tractor in the rear parking lot of the above location. When he returned, the truck was missing four tires. The case is pending investigation.

May 15 A reporting officer at a currency exchange in the 600 block of W. North spoke with a complainant who stated that a suspect cashed a fraudulent check. The case is pending investigation.

May 14-May 15 Theft was reported in the 100 block of E. First sometime between the above dates. A victim reported that a suspect stole his Apple iPad. The victim believes the suspect took the iPad after taking other belongings. A reporting officer made attempts to reach the suspect, but was met

As of 11 a.m. on Monday, May 25, there were 7,195 total cases among DuPage County residents, including 338 deaths. Since Sunday, there were 132 new cases and NO additional deaths in persons with COVID-19 infection reported.

If you are an older adult who wants to read faster, there is some evidence indicating that using electronic devices may help. A study involving both younger adults (ages 21-34) and older adults (ages 60-77), whose reading abilities were tracked via electroencephalogram (EEG), measured their eye speed over the page. While all participants preferred reading white printed pages initially, the older adults found themselves reading more efficiently and comfortably with electronic devices. The younger adults showed no difference in reading ability among the different formats. The improved reading ability by older adults was likely due to backlighting and shifting text size. These features help offset age-related loss of contrast sensitivity, as well as the effects of cataracts and macular degeneration.

On report of damaged goal post, police find bed midfield On May 16, a reporting officer responded to York High School for the report of a damaged goal post. The officer observed the goal post on the north side of the field, along with empty beer cans and a white, twin-size mattress in the middle of the field. School officials were notified.

Six incidents of entering unlocked vehicles On May 19, the Elmhurst Police Department reported six incidents of suspects entering unlocked vehicles were reported in the 500, 600 and 700 blocks of Bryan between 2:27 and. 2:30 a.m.

In the first incident, an officer observed the glove compartment was open and the contents were strewn about the front passenger seat. In the second incident, an officer found the driver’s side door of one of the victim’s vehicles ajar and the glove box and center console open.

The second vehicle also was found to have an open console and glove box.

In the third incident, an officer observed the glove compartment was open and the contents were strewn about the front passenger seat. Nothing of value was taken.

In the fourth incident, an officer spoke with the owner of a vehicle, who stated that nothing was missing from the vehicle. In the fifth incident, an officer observed a vehicle with its door ajar. The glove box had been open and its contents were strewn around the vehicle, but nothing was missing inside.

In the sixth incident, another victim in the 500 block of Bryan told police at around 9 a.m. that an unknown suspect entered his unlocked vehicle, which was parked overnight in his driveway. The suspect disturbed the contents of the vehicle, but nothing was reported stolen.

Still reeling from the news (and yet, not surprised) that the AAUW has had to cancel its annual Used Book Sale due to COVID-19, the best way to soothe the savage inner beast of a used book junkie is the good old Internet.

In a never-ending search for journals and letters of famous people, curiosity is always piqued by the used book sites. On a recent hunt, the Internet showed the way to Abe Books (AbeBooks. com), purveyors of all kinds of rare and unusual books, out-ofprint, collectibles and autographed volumes. Just for fun, they have a list of their most expensive sales, most recently, from Jan. – March of 2020.

The list includes a page from an atlas printed in Ulm, Germany, in 1482, which sold for $27,880. The illustration is a map of the Arabian

Mazzochi responds to state budget State Rep. Deanne M. Mazzochi (R-Elmhurst) released the following statement in response to the passage of the FY21 budget: “Illinois’ fiscal chickens have come home to roost. Springfield has squandered so many past tax increases and revenues that we had no rainy day fund. And we’ve now had a Governor-led shutdown that has crippled our already severely fiscally damaged state.

“Illinois households have taken a hard look at their finances and made the hard choices and prioritized. Should they expect the same of their government? Yes. Did they get it? Not even close.

“Anyone who has observed the convoluted budget process in years past has seen irresponsibility beyond measure. Yet, this year, of all years, a serious and somber process absolutely needed to take place.

Instead, we have a budget that is so utterly misguided. It is beyond any of the false, fake, foolish and phenomenally poorly drafted budgets we’ve ever witnessed. Not just here, but anywhere. With completely misplaced confidence that the federal government will bail Illinois out--a notion Washington DC has already vociferously rejected-- this budget is deliberately several BILLION dollars in the hole with no hope of bringing it anywhere close to balance even using every accounting trick in the bag that the Democrats have used for years. Relying on the same federal government our Governor has been denigrating daily to come to the rescue, isn’t a plan, it is at best a fallacy, and at worst a terrible, terrible lie.

Beyond foolish and irresponsible, it’s DANGEROUS. “What isn’t in this budget is any effort to be fiscally responsible, tighten our belts, look for whatever savings you can find in a crisis period like we’re experiencing; the same measures nearly every family in Illinois have been forced to make because of the Governor’s orders.

$23,600; a 1955 first edition of Moonraker by Ian Fleming, with original dust jacket, for $12,735; a first edition, signed copy of Jack Kerouac’s The Town & The City for $10,000; and, the National Union Catalog, which sold for $9,000, the largest book ever published. It is 530,000 pages bound in 754 volumes weighing three tons in total and including about 12 million titles. It contains a list of every book published before 1959 that was cataloged by the Library of Congress. Special transportation was arranged to deliver the purchase to its buyer.

This one really catches the eye… a book called Sylvicultura oeconomica by Hans Carl von Carlowitz sold for $9,360. The book’s full name is 12 words, several of which include letters that cannot be found on a standard computer keyboard. Turns out it’s a German book on forestry published in 1732. The title roughly translates to “natural instructions for growing wild trees.” The word silvology refers to the study of forests and woods.

Here’s the interesting thing: in the book, the author warns of the depletion of forests due to mining and industry. It was Carlowitz who coined the German term for the word “sustainability.”

How about that? That word was around in 1732. And we’re still striving for it 288 years later!

A few weeks ago, I shared the news that I have been taking humorous writing classes at The Second City. The full course was six terms of eight weeks each, culminating in a class show, which was supposed to be held in May until this pesky little virus pandemic came along.

In the meantime, our teacher, who has held us together through all of this and thus qualifying for sainthood IMHO, worked with the actors and recorded the show so we could put it on YouTube, Instagram and Facebook.

A salute to the First Ladies of Elmhurst Hazel Stevens Dame was first woman on Elmhurst College faculty

Written by Genie Urick At one time not only were there no women students at Elmhurst College, there were no female faculty members either. That is until Hazel Stevens was hired in 1926 by College President Richard Niebuhr. Hazel helped establish the new English Department and taught the first public speaking classes. She also was the Drama Coach. Over the years Hazel became a prominent author, playwright and speaker. Later in life she was lovingly known as the Poet Laureate of Elmhurst.

Hazel Beatrice Stevens was born in Chicago in 1904. Her father Francis Oscar Stevens was employed by Marshall Field & Company as buyer/ manager of the Oriental Carpet Department and did a lot of traveling.

When Hazel was 7 years old she moved with her parents and 8-yearold brother, Byron Francis, to 440 S. Kenilworth in the Cherry Farm Subdivision of Elmhurst.

“Elmhurst was just paradise!” Hazel once recalled. “We had prairies to play in, flowers to pick and apple trees to climb. I was considered a tomboy. I had a delightful childhood when I think back on it. I was allowed playtime, allowed to let our imaginations grow, you see. No T.V. No radio. We made up our own play.

I’m only sorry that children are so glued now to T.V. that they don’t express themselves and just play!”

Hazel proudly went to the “new” York High School. Her 1922 graduating class (of 30 students) was the first to attend York for a full four years.

It was Hazel, as first editor-in-chief, who named the school yearbook Y’s Tales, the name still used today. Hazel was captain of the girls basketball team. She also was a member of the softball and swim teams, the choir and Drama Club. Her friends all called her by her nickname Billie and she was named the “Wittiest Girl” and “Best Sport” in the class.

With the help and personal guidance of York Principal James Crann, Hazel enrolled at the School of Speech at Northwestern University in Evanston. She was a member of the Omega Upsilon Speech Sorority, the Speech Pan-Hellenic Council and the Speech Student Council.

After graduating in 1926, she taught for two years at Elmhurst College. In 1929, Hazel married James Stokes Dame, a Northwestern graduate who was a sales engineer for the White Cap Company. Hazel found herself in a “definitely domestic” lifestyle, as she liked to say. With the exception of her early married years, Hazel, her husband and two sons, James

Jr. and John, lived in a beautiful home in the heart of Elmhurst at 245 W. St. Charles Road. In 1922, shortly before she went to Northwestern, her parents had hired noted architect E. Norman Brydges to build the large house on the estate they called Homecrest. Hazel lived in the house for 50 years.

While Hazel and James were busy raising their two young boys and the family pet dog, Skipper, Hazel continued community work. She was involved with the boys’ schools and a leader in PTA. In 1926 she was elected the first president of the new Junior Woman’s Club which was sponsored by the Elmhurst Woman’s Club. (In later years the Junior Woman’s Club was renamed the Elmhurst Evening Woman’s Club.) Hazel met with The Masquers, a group of residents she had helped organize who met in their homes to read and dramatize plays. She also was president of the Monday Book Club, a member of The Scribblers and of the Elmhurst Historical Society. She always remained active at the First Congregational Church where she was married. Although Elmhurst College invited Hazel back to teach on campus, she never did return.

“It just seemed to me that I had chosen to take the domestic course, which I did. Except at the same time, I really felt liberated within my own sphere, because I could pursue my own hobby of writing poetry and giving poetry programs which I did through the years.” Hazel’s family was her priority and while her children were young, she always read stories to them every night. Eventually, she would travel all over the area reading her growing collection of original poems.

Hazel became very well known for her writing skills. In 1936 she wrote a three-act historical drama But That Was Yesterday in celebration of Elmhurst’s Centennial. The play was performed again in 1950 by the Elmhurst Community Theatre (Hazel was a member) during its 10th anniversary season.

In 1947 Hazel Stevens Dame won first place in the North Shore Writer’s Contest. This Too Brief Moment, her first volume of adult poems, was published in 1950. For over 40 years Press Publications printed each season at least 500 Christmas cards for Hazel, which included her annual holiday poem. A collection of Hazel’s Christmas poems Star-Led to Bethlehem was published in 1978.

From time to time the Chicago Tribune would include some of Hazel’s poems in the Line o’ Type or Two column. Her poetry also appeared in An American Annual of Christmas Literature and Art. In 1970 Hazel husband James died. He didn’t live to see his wife’s name appear in Who’s Who of American Women (1977-78) or in International Who’s Who in Poetry (1977).

Hazel was selected Woman of the Year in 1982 by the Northwest Chapter of the VIP Council of Illinois for her distinguished service in the Elmhurst community. In 1990 Hazel’s third book Popsicle Tree, a collection of poetry for children, was published.

Elmhurst College honored Hazel with its Founders Medal in 1994 for being “a woman of character, a woman with special gifts, a woman of insight.”

Through the years Hazel Steven Dame certainly enriched the cultural life of Elmhurst and the personal lives of all who knew her. I was in-

troduced to Hazel by Ruth Strand in the mid 1980s. Ruth knew that I was interested in producing a television program about poetry, so I was delighted to become acquainted with Hazel. Ruth and Hazel were the same age and very good friends. They both grew up in Elmhurst, went to the same schools, and shared fond memories of the early years. They were especially close during the 1950s and did a great deal of traveling together to Europe, South America, Scandinavia and the Far East. Hazel’s husband was not fond of traveling and was happy that his wife had found a companion. It was during these adventures that Ruth Strand, as Head Librarian, brought back beautiful dolls to start the Elmhurst Library’s collection. And Hazel brought back ideas for future poems. Hazel also was president of the Friends of the Library. She managed to increase the awareness and influence of the group and its membership soared to more than 700 supporters of library programs.

After meeting Hazel Stevens Dame, I was so intrigued by her gracious words and manner, and her knowledge of Elmhurst history, that I decided to devote one complete Elmhurst Our Kind Of Town program just to her in 1988.

Two years before I had produced a documentary about Harris T. Wilder which proved to be delightful and informative about the early days of Elmhurst. I was convinced Hazel’s recollections would be just as charming. And she didn’t disappoint me or Pat Cheffer, who hosted the program and interviewed Hazel in the studio.

When asked on air why she wrote poetry, Hazel answered, “There’s a peculiar compulsion that makes one

write, and very often one would rather not! It’s never the right time. It can be a great bother! It’s a pleasant agony.”

When asked which of her poems was her favorite, Hazel replied, “It’s very difficult to claim a favorite really. It’s like your children. How are you going to say which one is your favorite?” Hazel again appeared on television when I produced a Poetry Special in 1993. She was one of several guest poets who read their original poetry, to the delight of a large viewing audience.

Over the ensuing years, Hazel Dame became a family friend. She always was included when Ruth Strand and I would go to lunch, or when I would make a special Italian dinner – one of their favorites.

They both would send me thank-you notes praising my culinary skills, but the pleasure always was mine. Hazel even gave me an original copy of her play, But That Was Yesterday, in hopes that I could interest some group in performing it once more for the community. She also gave me permission to allow a theatre group to rewrite it as a musical. Despite her failing health and even more bothersome failing eyesight, Hazel remained optimistic and continued to write poetry.

“Every day that we live is a gift.

Every day is an uncommon day,” she liked to say. She often would answer phone calls with a cheerful, “Top of the morning to you!” or “Hello, Happy Day After!”

In 1995, my daughter Lisa Urick, a novice poet herself, was taking a creative writing class in college and Hazel had agreed to help her with an assignment. She invited Lisa to her apartment at 159 Cottage Hill Avenue. (Several years after her husband had died, Hazel sold the family home and moved across the street from Wilder Park.) Who would have suspected that Lisa would be one of the last people to interview Hazel Stevens Dame? With her permission, Lisa recorded their conversation on audio tape. It is cherished because Hazel reminisces and tells how she would stand in the middle of the living room as a little girl reading her mother’s poetry books, even though she didn’t understand what she was reading: She just loved the music of the words. Hazel encouraged Lisa to “use what you have or you lose it. So if you don’t take it seriously enough if you’re given a gift (like poetry writing) and don’t try to use it… you won’t have it. UCCA postpones ‘Taste of Town’ event until Oct. 15 United Community Concerns Association (UCCA) has postponed its annual Taste of the Town: Food for Life benefit, which had been planned for May 14, due to CDC guidelines. The proceeds from this event, UCCA’s largest fundraiser, were to benefit Elmhurst District 205 children and their families by providing food assistance, which is crucial, especially during the COVID-19 crisis.

Taste of the Town has been rescheduled for Thursday, Oct. 15, and UCCA is hopeful it will be able to take place.

UCCA’s mission is to target Elmhurst School District 205 children in need and provide food, referrals, and services to them in an effort to fight hunger. Even with schools closed, UCCA has continued to receive new families during this pandemic.

Many of these families have not needed help in the past, but due to job loss and lack of easy access to free lunches, that has changed.

“One single mother contacted us two weeks ago looking for food assistance,” said UCCA President Susie Sands. “When we told her we would mail her the food gift cards that day, she asked if she could pick them up immediately because her food supply was depleted.”

Churchville Middle School. Three more Mobile Food Pantries will be held at Churchville throughout the summer months, with a request for an additional five.

Thanks to the generosity of the community, UCCA has sent three emergency relief mailings of food gift cards to District 205 families totaling more than $45,000 in food assistance.

These gift cards allow families to select fresh foods and essentials that may not be available at other venues such as food pantries.

UCCA has been assisted in its work by grants and donations from the District 205 Foundation’s Emergency Response Fund, the DuPage Foundation COVID-19 Response Fund, Elmhurst Rotary and the Elmhurst 100+ Women Who Care organization.

In addition, UCCA is deeply grateful to the many individuals, organizations, churches and businesses who have been so generous during this crisis.

As uncertainty continues regarding how long the pandemic will last and if people will continue to lose jobs, the need for food relief will increase for many families. UCCA’s goal is to provide increased support to ease the burden of food scarcity to District 205 families during these challenging times. As part of her personal philosophy, she would often quote Helen Hayes, “To rest is to rust!”. Once referred to as the Grand Dame of Elmhurst, Hazel Stevens Dame died at the age of 93, but continues to speak to us through her poetry. This is my favorite…

County launches Reinvest DuPage, giant relief program Small business relief done in partnership with Choose DuPage DuPage County announced recently it would launch Reinvest DuPage, a grant relief program developed in partnership with Choose DuPage for small businesses and independent contractors.

The program will provide grants to sustain some businesses impacted by COVID-19.

DuPage County will fund this initial program with $7 million in monies received under the federal CARES Act. Choose DuPage will administer the plan with support from DuPage County and local banking and financial experts.

“We are well aware of the devastating impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on our small business community,” said County Board Chairman Dan Cronin. “We believe establishing this small business relief program will sustain some businesses until they can safely reopen.”

The program will provide grants of up to $15,000 for DuPage County-based businesses with fewer than 15 full-time employees and less than $1.5 million in annual revenues. Monies received under the program may be used for payroll, rent, mortgage payments,

Krishnamoorthi: Open the economy, but do it safely The COVID-19 pandemic—and more specifically, the response to the pandemic from the federal government—was addressed during a webinar May 18 featuring 8th Congressional District U.S. Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi.

The webinar was hosted by the Itasca-based GOA Regional Business Association.

The district represented by Krishnamoorthi, a Democrat who’ll be seeking his third term in Congress this November, includes Lombard, Addison, Wood Dale, Bensenville, Villa Park and a small portion of Elmhurst.

Krishnamoorthi responded to several questions that were emailed to him from participants prior to the webinar.

Noting his background in small business before serving in Congress—he served as president of research-oriented small businesses developing technology in the national security and renewable energy industries— Krishnamoorthi advocates opening up the economy as soon as possible, yet doing so safely.

“I think Gov. (JB) Pritzker is trying to open up the economy in a safe manner,” he said. “I’m hopeful that we can open up the economy once. If we open up too soon, the concern of public health experts and epidemiologists is that we’ll have another surge of infections and we’ll have to lock down again.

That would be a disaster.

“I believe that we should do it

We absolutely have to open up business, even in the absence of a vaccine. Pritzker announced May 20 that all four regions of the state are on track to enter Phase 3 of his reopening plan May 29. Businesses that are scheduled to re-open with safety precautions and capacity limits include hair salons, barbershops, manufacturing, offices and retail outlets. Restaurants and bars— which have been closed to dine-in customers since March 16—can open, but only with outdoor seating while continuing to provide delivery, drive-up and curbside options.

“My understanding based on what I read in the Daily Herald and have seen elsewhere is that our infection rate is going down, which is really good,” Krishnamoorthi said.

“My wife is an anesthesiologist; she is part of a COVID team at her ICU. Her ICU is full, and a lot of ICUs are full; however, they’re stabilizing, which is very good.

“If we see the infection rate continue to decline and the ICU and bed space decreasing, and be able to handle a potential second surge, I don’t see why we shouldn’t go into the next phase (Phase 4) sooner rather than later. Overall, my view is we’ve got to open up the economy as soon as possible; we can’t have businesses shudder; we can’t have workers not being able to go back and earn their income.

But at the same time, let’s just do it safely. Let’s make sure we have PPE at businesses so that they do what they have to do safely.”

HEROES Act Krishnamoorthi touted the Democratic-controlled House of Representative’s passage May 15 of the Health and Economic Recovery Omnibus Emergency Solution (HEROES) Act—an estimated $3 trillion stimulus and relief package to address the financial and health impacts caused by COVID-19.

Among the provisions of the HEROES Act that Krishnamoorthi

has advocated, according to the congressman’s website, include: • $500 billion in funding to assist state governments and $375 billion in funding to assist local governments; • A directive to the NIH’s National Institute of Mental Health to support research on the mental health consequences of this pandemic on health care providers; • The establishment of a technical assistance center to support public or nonprofit entities and public health professionals seeking to establish or expand access to mental health and substance use services associated with this pandemic; • A directive to the Corporation for National and Community Service to examine new and existing programs, partnerships, organizations and grantees that could be utilized to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic including the capacity and ability of State Commissions to respond to the needs of state and local governments in each state or territory in which such State Commission is in operation; • The extension of the coverage period for the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) from June 30 to Dec. 31 and increased flexibility for small business owners in using the funds.

Krishnamoorthi commented on the PPP during the webinar.

“I wanted to make sure that ordinary small business folks were not neglected in any kind of stimulus project going forward,” he said.

“Certainly the implementation of PPP has not been ideal; it’s been rocky, quite frankly. But that being said, it’s helped a lot of small businesses survive. We still want to make changes.

“We want to include 501c6s (business associations that are non-profit organizations) but we also want to loosen some of the rules with regard to loan forgiveness. We have determined or figured out over time that some of these rules just don’t make a lot of sense. I’ve been advocating for extending the cover period beyond eight weeks. Census outreach ‘incredibly stymied’ by COVID-19 pandemic Organizers forced to adapt as in-person outreach efforts put on hold

Like everyone else, Illinois’ census outreach coordinators have had to adapt to a new reality during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“As drastic as this change has been for everyone, it’s the same thing for us,” said Marishonta Wilkerson, who was named co-director of newly cre-

ated state census office last September.

Wilkerson and fellow co-director Oswaldo Alvarez are leading Illinois’ $29 million outreach effort through their office within the Illinois Department of Human Services. Their positions were created by Gov. JB Pritzker’s June executive order aimed at maximizing participation in the decennial head count.

The pair oversees a “hub and spoke” model in which funding passes through IDHS to 31 intermediary

organizations that lead outreach efforts in 12 regions of the state. Those organizations partner with other community groups to target outreach at a hyperlocal level.

Thus far, Illinois has hovered in the top 10 for state self-response rate since the census portal opened on April 1. While Wilkerson and Alvarez are pleased with the high ranking, they said there is room to grow the response rate—which was 64.2 percent as of May 13, putting Illinois in eighth place of all states.

While good against the national average of 59.1 percent, the numbers were well below the state’s 2010 final self-reporting tally of 70.5 percent. In 2000, the self-response rate in Illinois was 69 percent. Illinois outpaced the national average of 66.5 percent in 2010 and 67.4 percent in 2000.

There is still plenty of time to push this year’s numbers upward, as the self-response period deadline has been extended to Oct. 31. But for organizers, one difficulty is maintaining momentum as the pandemic puts door-knocking efforts on hold and strict social distancing requirements cancel the planned pizza parties, booths at fairs and local library events while driving outreach online.

Anita Banerji, director of the Democracy Initiative of the nonprofit organization Forefront, agreed that 2020 is presenting challenges both foreseen and unforeseen. Forefront is partnered with the city of Chicago for community-based census outreach as part of the program, and Banerji said they are noticing lagging numbers in minority communities that have not had points of contact with census organizers.

She said one continued challenge is fear of a citizenship question appearing on the official questionnaire.

While President Donald Trump advocated for such a question and received widespread media attention, it does not appear on the final form.

“And then everyone also thought that with us going online, that was going to be an issue, but now coupled with the pandemic, there are so many challenges to the 2020 census,” she said.

While respondents can still fill out their census by phone at 844-3302020 or by mailing back the questionnaires that are delivered to one’s household, the majority of responses this year—nearly 53 percent in Illinois—have been completed online at my2020census.gov. The process generally takes about 10 minutes and can also be completed on mobile devices.

Hard-to-count communities Organizers agree that challenges are compounded in “hard to count” communities.

Populations and geographies deemed “Hard to Count” by the U.S. Census Bureau are areas where the self-response rate in the 2010 census was 73 percent or less. Populations that have been historically undercounted include young children, immigrants, low-income households, people of color and rural residents.

Alvarez said the Illinois model puts nonprofit and other community organizations at the center of outreach in these communities.

“It’s important to have them become the trusted messengers,” he said, noting that nonprofits are often already making day-to-day contact with some of the hardest-to-count communities.

Education is key in the effort, organizers said, as residents need to know what they stand to lose in an undercount, what questions will or will not be on the form, and that their privacy is protected.

But strict social distancing guidelines have made that process more difficult for many local organizers.

Lynden Schuyler, director of south-

ern Illinois census outreach through the Illinois Public Health Association, works in Illinois’ southernmost 20 counties. She said the pandemic has made hard-to-count communities “even harder” in her territory, where four counties have between 28 and 51 percent of households that lack internet access.

“There are pockets where thousands and thousands and thousands of people don’t have access to internet services,” she said, later adding, “There’s a lot of migrant population down there. I think every single one of the hard-to-count communities is there in an abundance.”

She said many people are waiting for hand-delivered census forms, especially in rural areas that have only P.O. boxes which do not receive the forms. The hand delivery effort has been postponed, however, and is tentatively scheduled to start again on June 13 in the region.

“You have a good majority that are still waiting on that folder,” Schuyler said. “And in Hardin County, for example, you’re talking 98 percent of those people don’t even have their census invitation yet. So they’re going to explode when that finally gets to them.”

Hand delivery entails only slipping the census forms into one’s mailbox or onto a door handle, meaning it is different than door-knocking efforts which require in-person contact and won’t begin again until at least August, depending on the region.

Banerji said the lack of “touchpoints,” or in-person contact, in minority communities in the Chicago area is creating problems as well.

“Our outreach efforts have been incredibly stymied by the pandemic,” she said. “And we need to make sure that people’s priorities are health and safety first.”

Adapting outreach Unsurprisingly, social media has been important to getting the word out as organizations creatively adapt to new realities.

Banerji said one organization she worked with had not used Twitter much, but realized its power when participating in a coordinated regional outreach “thunderclap” event where several organizations posted to several social media platform at a coordinated date and time to promote the census.

“So we’ve never utilized social media like this before,” she said. “And to know that it is helping people get counted while they’re home, has helped us with our outreach efforts while we’re all staying at home.”

Organizations have also partnered with new entities to expand internet accessibility and hotspots, she said, and they’ve launched promotion efforts through grocery stores and food banks among others.

In Schuyler’s territory, efforts also include billboards, distributing signage in yards and at grocery stores and other creative efforts. One of her subgroups launched a “boredom busters” drive-thru where organizers handed bags of coloring books, other activities and census literature to parents while maintaining social distancing.

Groups also promoted social media “dance parties” and other shared virtual activities.

Timothy Christian basketball coaches earn IBCA honors Groenewold, Plaisier both recipients of coach of the year award

Both of Timothy Christian’s basketball coaches were rewarded for directing their teams to outstanding seasons in 2019-2020.

Timothy girls basketball coach Jill Groenewold and boys basketball coach Scott Plaisier both are the recipients of the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association coach of the year honor in Class 2A, District 7.

“It’s very flattering, to say the least,” said Groenewold. “That being said, you have to have good kids to achieve something like that. While it was good to be back when not having coached for a while at the high

school level, it helps when you have some good athletes. It’s been an extremely enjoyable first year back.”

Plaisier has been a beacon of excellence since taking over the Timothy program three years ago. His 20192020 squad advanced to the state finals for the first time in 40 years, only to have the Class 2A semifinals and finals in Peoria cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

This past season’s team went 28-5 and also won the Metro Suburban Conference Red Division title with a 12-0 mark. He’s now 70-23 at the helm in Elmhurst, and is tops among Timothy boys basketball coaches alltime in career winning percentage, according to IHSA records. All three of his teams have won 20 or more games.

Groenewold returned to the high school sidelines this past season in her second stint as Timothy’s head coach. She believes she won the IBCA honor twice during her pre-

vious highly successful run that included a pair of state finals appearances (her 2000 team took fourth in the state). Groenewold’s 2019-2020 Timothy team went 22-8, won a regional title and took second in the Metro Suburban Conference Red Division.

“It’s rare to have two coaches at the same school do it—it’s kind of cool,” said Groenewold. “We interact a lot.

Scott has been very gracious about showing me a lot of stuff he does.

We talk every week. It’s kind of nice to be able to compare our programs and talk a little bit. I respect him just as much as he respects me.”

Groenewold said the current COVID-19 shutdown has thrown a monkey wrench into offseason plans.

As it stands right now, the Illinois High School Association has suspended summer contact days for high school sports, but that could change in the near future, depending on the governor’s upcoming updates on the

current statewide state at home order that is set to expire Friday.

“Usually, right about now we’ve had the kids doing some off-season strengthening if they are not in a spring sport,” she said. “Most of our kids are in spring sports. We would have them trying to do some weight lifting and such. We would be starting our camps in the afternoons and then go over to Lisle (summer league) and play all the way through June. As Scott would say, we have put it on the kids to do the workouts we have put out there and hold themselves accountable a little bit. Things may change depending on what the governor does, but I don’t even want to dream big here at this point. The next step may be allowing parties of 10, but I don’t even know about contact and passing the ball around and playing defense on each other. It would be nice to get into the gym and do a lot of shooting and ball-handling with them.”

Groenewold noted every high school sports coach likely is in the same silo when it comes to high concern over potentially having no live summer contact days. “Yes, every coach is feeling that now,” she said.

“We do so much in the summertime from a togetherness standpoint with the 25 contact days, the weekend shootouts and daily practices. All of that gets us so prepared for the season.”

On the bright side, Groenewold and assistant coach Peter “Rev” Semeyn have been keeping in contact with the players. “Rev sends out a weekly announcement to touch base with them,” she said. “We had endof-the-year Zoom meetings and we have sent digital cards — any way you can touch base with them. Last week, Rev went out and picked up their uniforms at their houses and saw them at a distance. He needed something to do. He doesn’t sit very well (laughs).”

A total of 35 York student-athletes earned Clarence D. East academic award honors. Those 35 student-athletes were in the top five percent of the class.

York had three individuals recognized as graduating four-year, threesport athletes. Max Damewood competed in cross country, football, swimming and tennis in his four years.

Damewood did a year of cross and three of football.

William Enright competed in football, wrestling and water polo, while

Will Yasdick competed in cross country, swimming and water polo.

Two York student-athletes were recognized for achieving significant statistical milestones during the 20192020 school year. Barr went over the career 1,000-kill barrier for the York girls volleyball team. She’s only a junior.

Shockey, who is headed to Division I North Dakota to play basketball, surpassed the 1,000-career-point barrier this past season. Shockey is only the seventh player in York boys basketball history to achieve that coveted benchmark.

“I believe that’s absolutely crucial right now,” Krishnamoorthi said, “because many of our state and local governments down to the village level are on the precipice of laying off hundreds of thousands of police, firefighters, sanitary and public health officials who, quite frankly, are necessary for fighting the pandemic.”

Republican opposition However, the Republican-controlled Senate has called the bill “dead on arrival,” with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky labeling it a “liberal wish list.”

The White House issued a statement opposing the legislation in its present form.

“There are certain other items that

my friends and colleagues on the other side of the aisle call extraneous,” Krishnamoorthi said, “but in my humble opinion, I respectfully submit that they are intricately related to the pandemic and certainly they are timely.

That being said, nothing is going to pass Congress unless it’s bipartisan.

“My friends on the other side want to ‘take a pause’ before they do anything further. Right now, we have people calling into my office for the first time asking for food assistance for families with children. We can’t take a pause; we need to act. I respectfully submit that now is the time for the Senate to act. We’ve got to help the American people and businesses.”

In response to a question from one of the webinar’s participants—“If businesses are closed, how are we going to pay property taxes?”— Krishnamoorthi said counties which have pop-

ulations of at least 500,000 should consider utilizing the Federal Reserve’s Municipal Liquidity Facility.

“I know that different counties that generally issue these property tax bills are looking at ways to either delay the time that they collect property taxes or waive penalties for some period of time,” he said. “But essentially, I believe that a lot of these counties should take advantage of the Federal Reserve’s municipal liquidity funds and temporarily borrow from the Federal Reserve at a very low rate for their operating expenses and pass along the relief to property tax payers ASAP because they’re just getting socked.

“Just as the federal government and state governments have extended the deadlines for filing taxes and paying taxes, I humbly submit that the counties and others should do so as well to every extent possible.”

One day she was here and the next she was gone.

We’d been taking care of our grand daughter during the weekdays since September. And although getting up early in the morning to care for her was a bit of a yawn, our dear granddaughter was anything but.

and that was it. Until the next time.

Her toys – too many for us to have of course – sit unplayed with. Her snacks are untouched. Her diapers and wipes are in the back closet.

Her birthday present is in the front closet. We’re not sure if her party will be cancelled. The present will wait.

I suppose we’ll put the toys away eventually.

My husband used to make her breakfast every morning. She’d arrive at 7:30 and issue a one-word directive: “Pancake!”

And of course that’s what she got.

Because she was the boss. There was no disputing that.

Now she is home with her mom and dad and that’s a great thing. Still we miss her little big personality. We miss the way she used to strut around the house circling around the kitchen

island giggling. We miss playing hide and seek even though she never changed her hiding place. We miss her Pebbles Flintstone ponytail. We miss her “Owie-boo-boos.”

I miss sitting with her as she napped every afternoon.

But she is safe and we are safe and in these unprecedented times, you have to be grateful for the little things.

I am most definitely grateful for one grand little thing in particular. Can’t wait to FaceTime again.

Convoy goes through all seven Wards

These two friends pause with their canine friend to watch as the City’s Memorial Day Convoy took place throughout town on Monday, May 25. Due to coronavirus fears, the annual parade was cancelled and replaced with a Convoy of City and military vehicles.

Above: Since the Governor’s plea for social distancing is the theme of the day, the City had a Memorial Day Convoy that went through all seven Wards to honk and wave at residents from a reasonable distance.

Left: Residents were urged to decorate their cars in patriotic fashion for Memorial Day since the City had to cancel the parade. These people enjoyed the activity on south York Road on Monday with a big Thank You sign on the car. And they had their masks on.

This dog doesn’t seem to be bothered by the “new normal” at all! It was a beautiful and warm sunny day for the “Convoy” on Monday, May 25.

As a public service Residents invited to comment during public meetings City Hall is closed to walk-in service during normal business hours, however City Hall continues to be open during public meetings and for public comment opportunities. There are several ways to provide public comment during these meetings including online and in person. On May 4, the City added a call-in option for public comment. A list of public commenting options can be found on the City’s Agenda Center/Boardocs. If you any questions or require assistance, please contact the City’s Deputy Clerk at 630-530-3010.

Illinois mask requirements The State has mandated Illinoisans to wear a face mask or covering shield when leaving your home or reporting for essential operations. This is especially important when people cannot maintain 6-feet of social distancing. Example areas include shopping at essential businesses, picking up food, visiting a health care provider, traveling on public transportation, walking through condo or apartment complex common areas, when interacting with people providing essential services, when feeling sick, coughing, or sneezing. You do not have to wear a masking when running or walking in your neighborhood or when performing outdoor activities on your own property.

That’s 7th Ward Alderman Mark Mulliner directing traffic for the Memorial Day Convoy that started at the American Legion, which falls within Ward 7. The Convoy had more than 25 cars that then traveled through every Ward in the City.

This family came out on their front lawn on Monday, May 25 to watch the Memorial Day Convoy stream by their residence. It was a substitute for the annual Memorial Day Parade. A ceremony was pre-recorded and will be available on an upcoming edition of the cable broadcast Elmhurst Our Kind of Town.
