The City of Elmhurst has announced that Mayor Steve Morley is now accepting applications to fill the vacant seat for City Clerk, following the passing of longtime Clerk Patty Spencer.

The Mayor’s designated appointee will serve as Elmhurst City Clerk through the end of Clerk Spencer’s term, after which the individual elected in the Spring 2021 Election will assume the position.

District 205 well-represented at ‘Those Who Excel’ awards

Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205 was well represented at the Illinois State Board of Education’s (ISBE) annual Those Who Excel Awards Banquet, held on Saturday, Oct. 19 in Bloomington-Normal. Faculty, staff, and volunteers were recognized. Additionally, Jennifer Leban represented District 205 as a finalist for ISBE’s 2020 Teacher of the Year. Mrs. Leban was one of ten Illinois teachers up for the award.

Tickets still available for ECPA Spotlight Gala Special honors planned for Molly Lindberg On Saturday, Nov. 9 from 7-11 p.m., Elmhurst Center for Performing Arts (ECPA) will host its fourth annual Spotlight Gala to celebrate the arts in the community. The Gala benefits ECPA, a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) dedicated to the creation of a state-of-the-art venue for theater, dance and comedy in the Elmhurst City Centre. It will be held at the Elmhurst Art Museum.

In September, the Elmhurst-First LLC (EF LLC) announced its purchase of the 109-119 First Street property securing the location for the ECPA and advancing the overall plan to establish a performing arts center in downtown Elmhurst.

Gala to honor Molly Lindberg This year’s Gala honoree is Molly Lindberg, founder and artistic director of Spirito!

Singers. Lindberg founded Spirito! in spring 2008 with an ensemble of 50 high school Molly Lindberg treble singers. Her passion for choral music and her love for working with singers of all ages has expanded Spirito! into five rehearsal ensembles and more than 240 singers yearly.

Among the highlights of the 201819 season, Spirito! held 102 auditions, registered 230 singers from 60 schools in 31 communities, an increase of nine schools and four towns over the prior year.

For community service, the combined Spirito! ensembles sang at 12 service events. The group collected 1700 books and volunteered at Bernie’s Book Bank. The members were involved in making 70 bookbags and bookmarks for the Maywood Public Library’s summer reading program.

The Spirito! Service Award was presented to WXRT radio personality Terri Hemmert.

Spirito! was also invited to perform the National Anthem at Guaranteed Rate Field for the 7th year with a record number of singers (160).

“It is truly an honor to be recognized by the Elmhurst community at this year’s ECPA Gala event,” Lindberg said. “ECPA is a grassroots initiative, supported by people who believe in the value of the arts, and accessibility for all. Having built Spirito! from the ground up, I recognize the magnitude of the effort ECPA has undertaken and applaud them for their dedication to make a performing arts center a reality.”

Art in Bloom Another special feature of this year’s Gala is “Art in Bloom.” Ten floral designers from Phillip’s Flowers west suburban locations will compete with their floral interpretations of art pieces in the Elmhurst Art Museum (EAM) galleries, which will be on display for the viewing (and voting) pleasure of Gala attendees.

“We are thrilled with the idea of flower pairing bouquets with the beautiful art pieces at the Elmhurst Art Museum. It allows our designers creative freedom to prepare bouquets around a specific painting to showcase their talents.” said Don Phillip, one of the owners of Phillip’s Flowers and Gifts. “Having a contest that the ECPA gala patrons vote on adds an element of fun for everyone.”

Christine Kanel Born September 1923 in Chicago, Illinois to Nicholas and Angeline Theodoropoulos of Doriza, Greece, Christine Kanel passed away recently. A life-long west-sider, Christine married James Kanel in 1957. They spent 62 amazing years together shared by their sons Andrew and Nick (Michelle) and grandchildren Tia and Jimmy. Growing up near Halsted Street in the 1920s and 1930s, Christine would spin tales of her time in the original Greektown neighborhood specifically, the LeGrande apartments. Her stories ranged from taking part in activities at Hull House with Jane Addams to tales of Depression-era friends who lived in houses made of tin cans. She attended Socrates Elementary School, Skinner School, and McKinley High School where she was named class prophet for her writings in the 1941 McKinley yearbook. During the post-WWII era Christine welcomed

the role of unofficial ambassador to dozens of Greek immigrant families whom she introduced to American culture.

An impeccable wit and comedic awareness constantly brought laughter to friends and family. Among her favorite jokes was, “People say I can be kind of a pill, but I’ve always wanted to be a pill because when I was a kid I saw a sign that said, Vitamins B-1.” Her ability to make friends and coworkers laugh was a staple during the 1940s and 1950s while working at Spiegel, Sonneborn, and Madigan’s. However, her favorite job was as a lunch lady at Edison Elementary School in Elmhurst. While there, Christine helped form the prestigious Edison Lites Social Club whose members have remained close knit while meeting regularly for five decades.

Yet, her deepest passion was for the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church in the Austin neighborhood.

A nearly lifelong Assumption member, Christine served as a Sunday School teacher, festival volunteer, and proudly organized the church’s Philoptochos Society chapter while in her late 70’s. Launching the Philoptochos reinvigorated multiple generations of the Assumption family. Her generosity (usually represented by a pound cake or Greek kouroumbredes cookies) was legendary and represents not only her agape to others but serves as a reminder that every relationship can be cherished when handled with warmth and beauty. Church display vandalized

According to this week’s police reports, a custodian at Visitation Church on the 700 block of So. York told police that sometime between Oct. 16 and Oct. 17, an anti-abortion sign had been painted with black spray paint. The sign was on the front lawn of the church, surrounded by symbolic cross markers across the corner property. A second lawn sign was removed and placed against the church building. Several of the lawn markers were knocked down.

Later, a victim reported to police that a second anti-abortion sign had been painted over with black spray paint sometime between Oct. 18 & Oct. 19.

“Regardless of your views on abortion, there’s no excuse for damaging property,” one witness said.

Criminal trespass, criminal damage to property Oct. 19 A complainant in the 600 block of S. York told police at around 7:48 a.m. that she noticed her check engine light had come on in her car. As a result, she checked her gas tank and discovered it had been filled with wood chips. The complainant believes this incident occurred due to an altercation she had with her ex-boyfriend.

Domestic battery, domestic incident, disorderly conduct Oct. 18 A reporting officer and the fire department responded for a dumpster fire at a business in the 500 block of W. Lamont at around 9:10 p.m. Upon arrival, three juvenile suspects were located nearby and admitted to starting a fire inside the dumpster, according to police.

The suspects were cited with disorderly conduct and released to parents. No damage was done to the dumpster.

Oct. 22 Police said officers responded for a drug complaint at Elmhurst Hospital at around 2:15 a.m. Hospital security related that an unnamed suspect came to the hospital for treatment of a wound and was found to have heroin in her possession. The hospital staff will advise when the suspect is available for release. The suspect will be charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance and transported to the DuPage County Jail.

Oct. 21 Zaylene Mendoza, 19, of Berwyn, a passenger in a vehicle, was issued a citation for possession of cannabis subsequent to a traffic stop near Myrtle and Alexander at around 7:10 p.m.

Aug. 30-Sept. 3 A complainant in the 500 block of E. Park told police that her and her husband have been having problems with their ex son-in-law.

The suspect has been seen outside the above address on multiple occasions. The reporting officer attempted to make contact with the suspect with no results.

Oct. 17 Roberto Garcia Alvarado, 25, of Addison, was issued a citation for possession of cannabis and tinted windows subsequent to a traffics stop near St. Charles and Oakland Grove at around 1:23 a.m.

Oct. 19 The principal of a school in the 800 block of S. York told police at around 12:54 p.m. that they received an e-mail on Oct. 18 from an unknown source containing the name of their current school’s pastor requesting her to obtain a Wal-Mart gift card. The principal was contacted and alerted that the email was not from the school pastor. The gift card was not scratched off and no information was given to the suspect.

Oct. 23 Robetta Pickens, 21, of Maywood, was issued citations for illegal transportation of alcoholic liquor, possession of cannabis and no seat belt subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and Elizabeth at around 10:25 p.m.

Harassment, threats Sept. 1-Oct. 21 A victim at Elmhurst College told police that subsequent to ending a relationship with the suspect, he has repeatedly called her and threatened her between the above dates.

Oct. 18 Police said a reporting officer responded to a report of a vehicle in the roadway with front-end damage near York and Lexington at around 1:48 a.m. Upon arrival, no driver or passenger was located. The registered owner was in possession of the keys and stated she had no idea how the vehicle ended up where it was. Further investigation is pending.

Oct. 17 A complainant in the 500 block of W. Babcock told police at around 2:42 p.m. that she heard loud rattling at her front door. When she went to check the noise there was an unknown female suspect standing at her door.

The suspect immediately turned away, walked back down the driveway towards the street to an awaiting silver sedan parked at the curb occupied by a male black driver. The vehicle then fled east on Babcock. The suspect was described as a black female in her mid to late 30s with short black hair, wearing a dark windbreaker jacket with a gold pattern design, holding a cellular phone in a red case.

Oct. 23 Retail theft was reported at a store in the 100 block of E. Butterfield at around 12:52 p.m.

A complainant told police that a suspect concealed two lighters and left the store without paying for the items.

Oct. 22 Retail theft was reported at a store in the 300 block of S. Route 83 at around 2:45 p.m. Police said video surveillance showed two suspects exit the store without paying for clothing items. The suspects entered a black SUV and left the area. One of the suspects was described as a black female, around 25 years old, with red hair, a large build, wearing a black sweater with a white skull on front, white pants and tan boots. The second suspect was described as a black female, around 25 years old with a large build, wearing a pink Nike sweater with the number 86 on the back, gray sweatpants and white shoes.

Oct. 21 Retail theft was reported at a gas station in the 600 block of W. North at around 12:30 p.m. A complainant told police that a suspect described as either a white male or a lightskinned black male with balding black hair, a goatee and a moustache, wearing a dark blue coat and light-colored pants, entered the store and requested five packs of cigarettes. The credit card that the suspect used was declined.

The cashier advised the suspect that the card was declined, but the suspect walked out of the store with the bag containing the cigarettes and did not pay for the merchandise.

Oct. 20-Oct. 21 Burglary to a vehicle was reported at a business in the 800 block of Riverside. A complainant told police that an unknown suspect(s) cut the lock to the storage yard where work vehicles are kept sometime between the above dates. The suspect(s) smashed the front passenger side windows of two work trucks and stole construction equipment.

Oct. 19-Oct. 21 Identity theft was reported in the 100 block of E. Schiller. A victim told police that three different pharmacies contacted his office in an attempt to verify prescriptions for Alprazolam® and Norco. All three prescriptions were fraudulent. The pharmacies did not fill the prescriptions.

Oct. 19-Oct. 20 Commercial burglary was reported at a business in the 800 block of Riverside. A The complainant told police that an unknown suspect cut the locks off of multiple storage crates for the business and stole chainsaws, screw guns, a gas motor, a weed-whacker and a Sawzall sometime between the above dates.

Oct. 19 Patrice Bovan, 26, of Chicago, was charged with felony retail theft, while Brittney Powell, 24, of Chicago, was charged with retail theft at a store in the 300 block of S. Route 83 at around 2:53 p.m.

of E. Butterfield told police at around 10:30 p.m. an unknown suspect described as an Hispanic female took two snack cakes and left the store without paying for the merchandise. The suspect entered a Dodge Caravan. While she attempted to leave the lot, she ran over a curb and struck a guardrail on the building. The reporting officer attempted to make contact with the registered owner with negative results.

Oct. 17 Burglary to a vehicle was reported in the 100 block of W. Vallette at around 12:41 p.m.

A victim told police she parked her car and went into the above location. Approximately five minutes later, she returned and discovered the rear passenger side window was broken.

Her purse was taken along with a makeup bag that was inside it.

Burglary to a vehicle was reported near Bonnie Brae and Second at around 1:01 p.m.

A victim told police that she visited Salt Creek Park with her children. After being there for 10 minutes they returned to her unlocked car where she discovered a diaper bag had been stolen.

York introduces three of this year’s Dukes of Distinction

Both graduated from Northern Illinois University in 1978, Alice with a degree in marketing, Thomas with a degree in finance. He continued on to earn a Master’s Degree in Finance from NIU. Alice began a successful career in

sales and marketing. She created and managed several national accounts for American National Can Co. After 12 years in business, she transitioned to focus on raising her family.

Meanwhile, Tom was building his career in the financial services industry. His focus was on investment management in the private banking sector. Tom served individual clients, as well as charitable foundations and endowments, and retirement accounts.

In 1992, they learned that their second child, Adam, had a profound hearing loss. This spurred them down a path to seek the best possible care for their son.

They wanted him to function as fully as possible in the hearing world. This led to a Cochlear Implant in order to give Adam the sensation of sound. Specialized education was required to maximize the benefits of the implant and make up for the delay in hearing and language development.

In 1995, they became involved with a small group of other parents of hearing-impaired children and the Director of Deaf Education at Central Institute for the Deaf in St. Louis. In early 1996, with seed funding from a foundation, they were able to open the first Oral School for Hearing Impaired Children in the Chicago area.

Each year, thanks to Thomas and Alice’s work, approximately 60 hearing-impaired students attend Child’s Voice each year, where they have an opportunity to develop the listening and speaking skills. The Ballents continuously share the gift of their experiences with other families, raising and educating children with hearing loss.

Elmhurst College presents ‘1619: The Journey of a People’ Nov. 7 In 1619, 20 enslaved Africans arrived in Jamestown, Va. The 400-year journey that followed would change a nation and the world.

On Thursday, Nov. 7, Elmhurst College will host the performance of a new musical, “1619: The Journey of a People.” Using various musical forms, including hip-hop and jazz, this dynamic musical production commemorates the struggles, recognizes the heroes and celebrates the story of America’s African sons and daughters.

From the beginning of American slavery to the Reconstruction, the Great Migration, the Civil Rights Era and the modern movements for justice, “1619” packs generations of history into a two-hour musical theater experience that traces America’s path toward freedom and equality. The musical features a cast of singers, actors, spoken word artists and dancers who reflect on the past while tackling critical contemporary social issues.

“1619” was created and produced by Ted Williams, chairman of the Social Science Department at Kennedy-King College in Chicago, a professor of political science, former host of the WYCC-PBS television program “The Professors,” and a professional actor and speaker. we’d be home. I thought it was ingenious – not to mention efficient.

Thinking back it sort of was. I was a kid before my time.

After returning from our candy procurement we set about the task of sorting. My sister and I spilled our sacks onto separate ends of the living room and began grouping and counting. Seven Kit Kats, 14 Skittles, nine Laffy Taffy, a popcorn ball and so on. Each different type had its own pile on the floor.

When we finished sorting and counting our loot, the trading began.

I liked Reese’s, my sister preferred Snickers so we’d make a few swaps to bulk up on our favorites.

It goes without saying that during the sorting and trading process we both partook in a sampling of the merchandise.

At the end of it all it was clearly time for bed but we were sugared up and sleep was elusive. My head hit the pillow and I counted – not sheep but mini candy bars waiting for me in my sack.

My sister and I had the same routine every Halloween, but the day after Halloween and the days following we differed in our approaches to our respective stashes.

My sister was a normal child. She ate her candy. She enjoyed it. By mid-November her bag was empty or nearly so. There may be been a couple of packs of Smartees left, but that was it.

I was not a normal child, as can be evidenced by my complex route routine on Halloween night. I’d worked very hard for my sack of candy. I’d planned and schemed

for weeks. Every mini bag of M & M’s had been earned with my own blood, sweat and tears.

So I did what any abnormal, Type-A, candy-focused kid would do. I hoarded my goods. I rationed them carefully, nibbled sparingly.

I hesitated to open any Reese’s because I was saving the best for last. November passed, as did January and March. Summer came and went and still my bag remained not empty.

Of course I made a decent dent and savored the occasional Reese’s, but come the next October I still had candy, and on Halloween I often had to toss out the remnants of the last year’s stash in order to make room for the incoming.

I’m no longer Type-A – on Halloween or any other day of the year. But I miss the planning days of a type-A kid on Halloween. There was a certain joy to it. A controlled joy.

I do enjoy passing out candy on Halloween night. I suppose there’s some sort of control issue wrapped within the bars of chocolate I’m giving out. But I always make sure to give kids (the young ones especially) a hefty handful. After dark, we turn out the lights and I finally experience what I’ve been waiting for all day: the savoring of one last late night-Reese’s.

ICGS celebrates Grandparents Day On Friday, Oct. 18, first and second grade students at Immaculate Conception Grade School in Elmhurst celebrated Grandparents’ Day. Grandparents and VIP’s of the students gathered in the IC Church after lunchtime. They were greeted by IC Pastor, Father Tom Paul, who talked about the vibrancy of ICGS, the second largest in the Joliet diocese.

Before introducing ICGS Principal Cathy Linley, he led the crowd in prayer.

Linley welcomed the visitors and spoke of the legacy of faith and excellence on which the school stands as the first Catholic school in Elmhurst.

She then invited the first grade students up to the altar to entertain their guests with a couple of songs.

After taking a bow, they took their seats and second grade students processed up to the altar for their turn serenading their adoring fans. After the singing program, the students met their guests in their respective classrooms where they worked on some activities together and had their photos taken.

Markeeta got married in 2016, and had another daughter in 2017. In June 2019, she purchased her own home.

“I share my story as a tribute to all the great things Bridge has done for me,” she said. “I am so grateful to Bridge. I could not have made it without them.”

Bridge’s mission is to transition homeless families to self-sufficiency, as it successfully did for Markeeta. Every year, Bridge Communities provides free transitional housing to 137 homeless DuPage County families for a two-year period. Bridge provides mentors, financial support. professional case management, education tutoring, career counseling and coaching, and donated automobiles. After the two year, each family is able to save money, learn budgeting skills, and obtain better employment, so they can live on their own once they graduate.

You can support Bridge Communities by donating to Sleep Out Saturday or specifically sponsoring First United Methodist’s group at sleepoutsaturday.org. All money raised from the event will support families in the Bridge Communities Transitional Housing Program, funding the housing, employment training, mentoring, case management, plus tutoring and summer camps for kids. Volunteers sought for Meals on Wheels

The DuPage Senior Citizens Council (DSCC) needs volunteers to deliver meals to frail and homebound seniors in DuPage County.

Meals on Wheels are delivered five days a week, Monday through Friday, from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Deliveries typically take about an hour.

Requirements to volunteer are a valid driver’s license, current car insurance, a background check and to attend a volunteer training that is provided at the DSCC central office located at 1990 Springer Drive in Lombard.

In addition to Meals on Wheels drivers, DSCC is always in need of volunteers for other services such as seeing a senior through its Friendly Visit program, creating crafts and taking part in intergenerational activities.

About Access Sports Dena Seidenfuss is the founder of Access Sports. In her search for an athletic program for her son on the Autism Spectrum, she learned there are many barriers for children with disabilities to participate in team sports.

Young athletes with and without disabilities should have the opportunity to engage in recreational and sports programs in their communi-

ties. Dena’s vision for Access Sports was to create programs that would resemble typical peers’ programs and include the support needed for young athletes with diverse needs to be successful.

Access Sports partners with local organizations to bring team sports to over 60 athletes in Elmhurst.

They currently organize soccer, basketball, baseball, and track programs for athletes with disabilities ages 5-22.

Their mission is to provide young athletes with disabilities opportunities to participate in an array of community based sports in a fun and meaningful way.

Chugging into the Elmhurst History Museum on Nov. 16

Trains have a way of engaging kids and adults of all ages, especially those who are enamored by the model railroad variety. The intricate track layouts with detailed railroad cars, terrains, people, and buildings have a special way of connecting with train enthusiasts and serious hobbyists alike.

The Elmhurst History Museum invites model train fans to join in a day of small-scale railroading fun on Saturday, Nov. 16 during Model Railroad Madness from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event takes place in the museum’s Education Center, located at 120 E. Model Railroad Madness is presented by members of Chicagoland T-Trak, a group of railroad modelers and collectors that run “N-scale” trains on modular layouts. “On the Right Track” showcases an array of fascinating railroad artifacts including from vintage telegraph equipment, signage, and uniforms to a steam engine bell and whistle and more. Children can investigate hands-on learning stations including a wooden train play area, working telegraph, and track switching game.

Admission to the exhibit is free, and participants are welcome to view the exhibit before or after the program from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.

‘Advice from a Scientist For Nones, Nuns And All’ Father John Francis Kartje presents Joseph Cardinal Bernardin Lecture

With doctoral degrees in both scripture and astrophysics, Father John Francis Kartje brings unique insight to the exploration of how faith and science inform each other.

On Wednesday, Nov. 13 beginning at 7:30 p.m., Kartje will present “How to Engage Mystery: Advice from a Scientist for Nones, Nuns and All,” this year’s Joseph Cardinal Bernardin Lecture.

Kartje is rector of the University of Saint Mary of the Lake, also known as Mundelein Seminary.

Choose DuPage salutes Manufacturing Month in Illinois Offers optimistic report on future business growth

IC Catholic Prep football closes out regular season with win Knights open playoffs against Chicago Sullivan

The IC Catholic Prep football team wasted no time getting back on the winning track.

After a Week 8 loss at Wheaton St. Francis, the Knights closed out the regular season with a 28-13 Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division victory on the road against Riverside-Brookfield.

The Knights finished the regular season 8-1 overall and took second in the MSC Blue with a 5-1 record.

IC Catholic Prep led Riverside-Brookfield 7-0 after the first quarter and went into halftime tied at 7-7. The Knights scored two touchdowns in the third quarter and another in the fourth quarter.

The Knights did the bulk of their damage on the ground against Riverside-Brookfield (6-3), running for 387 on 36 carries (10.8 yards per carry).

Junior Kyle Franklin ran 23 times for 291 yards and scored two touchdowns. He averaged 12.7 yards per carry and had a long run of 87 yards.

Senior quarterback Danny Cronin ran 13 times for 96 yards and two touchdowns. He had a long run of 23 yards.

Cronin also was 15 of 22 passing for 112 yards. Senior Rashad Sbeih caught seven passes for 35 yards, while Franklin had three catches for 24 yards. Anthony Parille had three catches for 19 yards and Chauncey Lee had two catches for 34 yards.

IC Catholic Prep racked up 499 yards of total offense and 595 all-purpose yards.

Franklin now has run for 1,189 yards on 121 carries and has 19 rushing touchdowns. Franklin is averaging 9.8 yards per carry and has four

York’s Barr tops 1,000 career kill mark Yale University commit is a key cog in success of Dukes girls volleyball team

When it comes to high school sports, most any career statistic that hits four digits is to be celebrated.

In the case of York junior girls volleyball player Gigi Barr, reaching a four-digit milestone in only three years of play is extra eye-opening.

Barr recently went over the 1,000 career kill mark with more than a season left in her varsity volleyball career.

In the most recent statistics available, Barr had 1,038 career kills in 248 sets played. That’s on top of a .311 career hitting percentage, not a shabby total by any means for an outside hitter.

“I’m still in shock,” said Barr.

“On our club team, there is another girl who just did it. It’s a pretty cool accomplishment. They gave me a plaque and some flowers. The whole team got excited about it. It’s a nice accomplishment because you work so hard and it’s nice to get something like that because of that hard work.”

Barr, a 6-1 outside hitter, had 439 kills in 80 sets through late last week and was hitting .336. She also had 243 digs, proving her all-around versatility for the Dukes.

“One of the biggest things for me this season in terms of being effective is being able to hit different shots,” said Barr, whose full first name is Georgiana. “You can hit a ball as hard as you want, but there is a block in front of you. You have to be smart with your shots. I work on my shots at practice a lot. When I warm up, it’s more about the shots instead of hitting the ball as hard as I can. Another big thing is reading the court and knowing what shots are open out there. I listen to my coaches and realize what options I have. I’ll go with what is effective but you have to switch it up and make sure you are not focusing on only one shot.”

Barr started playing the sport as a youngster along with her twin younger sister, Stella, who is a junior middle blocker on the Dukes team.

“My mom wanted us to get involved in sports,” she said. “I fell in love with volleyball and I’ve been loving it ever since.”

Barr loves the fact she’s able to play the sport with her twin sister (Gigi was born about 6 minutes earlier). In addition to playing for York, the two are on the same Adversity club team.

“Stella helps me be more competitive and effective,” she said. “We have always been close, especially with volleyball and being in the gym.

We’re very family oriented people.”

Up next: The winner of this game plays either No. 11 seed Dixon (5-4) or No. 6 seed Stillman Valley (8-1). If IC Catholic Prep wins, it either heads west to Dixon for a second-round game or welcomes Stillman Valley to Plunkett next week. IC Catholic Prep defeated Stillman Valley last year in the second round. It would mark the fourth all-time playoff meeting between the two perennial football powers.

York singles duo does well at girls state tennis Timothy Christian’s Lee advances to consolation quarterfinals

The York girls tennis singles duo of Melissa Cartis and Gianna Nikoleit had a strong showing at the recent IHSA state finals tournament.

Cartis advanced all the way to the consolation quarterfinals, while Nikoleit advanced to the fourth round of the consolation bracket.

Between them, Cartis and Nikoleit won six matches at state.

Cartis won her opening-round match 5-7, 6-1, 10-8 against Palatine Fremd and then won 6-3, 6-3 against Deerfield in the second round. She lost to New Trier in the third round by a 6-2, 6-1 score.

Earlier, Cartis went 3-1 at the Lyons Township sectional to earn her third straight state finals berth. She finished second in the singles division.

“Melissa played with a lot of poise and was very consistent throughout the tournament,” said York coach Tres Heimann. “She had a quality win over Prachi Shah from Hinsdale Central. This is Melissa’s third win over Hinsdale Central this season.”

Cartis finished the year with a 33-9 record.

Nikoleit, a junior, finished third in the sectional to earn her second state appearance in a row. She played in the state doubles tournament as a freshman.

“Gianna played with a lot of confidence throughout the tournament,” said Heimann.

Lee, who earned a pair of state doubles medals in her previous two trips, opened the tournament with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Kaneland and then was a 6-0, 6-0 winner against Mascoutah.

In the third round, Lee lost 6-1, 6-3 to Effingham St. Anthony’s Emilee Mossman, who reached the consolation bracket semifinals.

Lee was a 6-1, 6-2 winner in the fourth round of the consolation bracket over a player from Metamora.

She won 6-3, 6-5 against Grayslake Central in the fifth round and then lost 6-3, 6-1 to Benet Academy’s Daniella Nenadovich in the consolation quarterfinals.

Nenadovich finished sixth in the state, losing in the consolation final.

Timothy Christian boys soccer team reaches sectional championship game Trojans finish season with 18 wins

The Timothy Christian boys soccer team made another deep run into the playoffs.

The Trojans lost 2-1 in penalty kicks to the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools in the championship game of the Class 1A IC Catholic Prep sectional at Plunkett Athletic Complex.

University High won the game 5-3 in the penalty-kick phase.

Timothy Christian finished the season with an 18-3-2 record. The Trojans had defeated University High 3-0 earlier in the season.

The Trojans reached the sectional title game after a 2-0 win over Chicago Noble/Golder in the semifinals.

In the win against Golder, junior Jackson Day and senior Carson Hooker each had a goal. Josh Kiefer, a junior, had one assist. Sophomore Christian Cruz took seven shots on goal. Senior goalie Zach Orange made five saves to earn the shutout.

Timothy advanced to the sectional after winning its own regional.

York Girls Volleyball The York girls volleyball team scored a 25-23, 25-21 win over Normal Community High School. Gigi Barr led the Dukes with 11 kills, while Katie Norgle had five kills.

Grace Meadows and Stella Barr each had four kills. Emily Fleckenstein had three aces. Sydney Krueger had four blocks, while Fleckenstein had three. Elise Pedote had nine digs.

Fleckenstein and Norgle each had seven digs. Fleckenstein had 22 assists.

York also upended New Trier by a 25-23, 23-25, 25-16 count. Gigi Barr had 17 kills. Fleckenstein and Norgle each had six kills. Pedote had three aces. York had eight aces as a team. Krueger led the way blocking with seven total blocks. Pedote had 13 digs, while Norgle had nine and Fleckenstein six. Fleckenstein finished with 23 assists.

The York boys soccer team brought home the hardware in dramatic fashion.

The Dukes were 2-1 winners over St. Charles East in penalty kicks. The victory gave York the Class 3A Lake Park regional title in a game played at the Lake Park west campus in Roselle.

The Dukes won their fourth regional title and first since 2006. York plays in the Class 3A St. Charles East sectional.

York was the No. 7 seed in the sectional, while St. Charles East was the No. 2 seed.

Sophie Hurt had 20 assists and four digs. Claire Wagner had eight kills and one block, while Jess Sobon had nine kills and five digs. Kristen Brachmann had two kills, five blocks and one ace. Bella Leslie had seven digs and two aces. Maddie Benson had three aces.

The win moved IC Catholic Prep to 20-9.

Zielke also was pleased with the play of Cruz of late. “Christian is a sophomore midfielder and really stood out in the two regional games,” he said. “He’s done a really nice job attacking the back line and that has opened up some gaps for our forwards.”

Zielke said the trio of Stremler, Hooker and Josh Wise also have been consistent contributors throughout the season. “The have continued to do their thing for us,” he said.

Timothy finished tied for second in the Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division with a 4-2 record.

lege commitment to Yale University in the Ivy League. “I would say academics played a pretty big role,” she said of her choice. “It’s a very competitive school academically and athletically. It’s an Ivy League school where they allow you to do some amazing things academically.

I’m very excited. It’s the perfect fit I was looking for.”

Barr, a National Honor Society member at York who is on the high honor roll, said medicine or some form of engineering, perhaps bio-medical or aerospace, are areas of potential study interest to her at the next level.

The junior said the key for with maintaining academic excellence and her volleyball endeavors is good time management.

“It’s a balancing act,” she said.

“You must have good time management. I don’t waste time. I put it toward academics and make sure I get my homework done. I also make sure I have a good, open line of communication with my teachers and stay on top of my schoolwork if I am going

to miss school for a club tournament.

You have to study, even when you are tired after a practice.”

Barr likes the way the York season has unfolded. The Dukes open Class 4A regional play this week.

“We have done very well this year,” she said. “Earlier in the year, we took Benet Academy to three sets and played I high level of volleyball against them. That opened our eyes.

If we can continue to do that we can be very successful in the playoffs.

We have put in so much time in the gym. We’re still a young team and will be even better next year. We only have three seniors on the team.

Next year, we’ll all be seniors.”

Barr, who enjoys music and plays the ukulele, said the Dukes might be a tad bit ahead of schedule this year.

But that’s OK. “I think we have put in so much work that we are mature volleyball players, even though we still are young,” she said.

“We are definitely ahead of schedule. I can’t wait to see what this group of girls can do.”

The York girls swimming program split its meets with West Suburban Conference Silver Division foe Glenbard West.

York won the junior varsity meet 112-67 and lost a close 94-89 varsity contest.

York was second in the JV 200 medley relay with Hannah Lonergan, Kyra Szczpanek, Annie Lyons and Paige Palermo going 2:22.60.

York was third in the varsity 200 medley relay with Nicole Demare, Rose Jensen, Lauren Jones and Claire Pfaff swimming 2:05.02.

Savannah Nichols was second in the JV 200 free in 2:43.00, while Brooke Woolfe won the varsity 200 free race in 2:06.11.

Palermo won the JV 200 IM with a time of 2:45.91. Amanda Polach won the varsity 200 IM with a time of 2:17.74.

Maya Anikiej won the JV 50 free in 31.40. Gabi Knott was second for York in the varsity 50 free in 27.15.

Imagene Sorice won the JV diving competition with a score of 160.20, while Marlena Modica won the varsity diving event with a score of 214.75.

Abby Sardo won the JV 100 butterfly in 1:22.87. Demare was second in the varsity butterfly with a time of 1:06.69.

The IC Catholic Prep girls cross country team made quite the splash at the recent Class 1A Walther Christian regional held at Miller Meadow in Forest Park.

The Knights won the regional title with 31 points, 50 ahead of second-place Wheaton Academy. IC Catholic Prep won on the strength of three girls in the top five and four in the top 10.

Carly Manchester, a sophomore, won the regional individual title.

She covered the course in 18:25.

Sophomore Kennedy Calcagno was fourth in 19:21, while junior Frankie Chaidez was fifth in 19:33. Junior Alia Johnson was 10th in 20:28. Senior Dominika Ciepiela was 15th in 20:55. Freshman Liz Closterides was 31st in 21:50 and senior Annie Guinan was 52nd in 24:25.

IC Catholic Prep runs in the Class 1A Lisle sectional at Community Park Saturday for a chance to go the state meet in Peoria.

York Boys Cross Country The York boys cross country team

had itself quite a battle with Wheaton-Warrenville South at the recent Class 3A Glenbard West regional held at Camera Park in Glendale Heights.

The Dukes took second in the regional behind Wheaton-South and earned a spot in Saturday’s Class 3A Lake Park sectional at the Lake Park east campus where berths in the state finals in Peoria will be on the line.

Wheaton-South won the regional with 25 team points, followed by York’s 31 points. Of the first six runners to cross the finish line, four were from Wheaton-South.

Of the first 10 runners to cross, six were from York.

Wheaton-South had the Nos. 1, 3, 4, 6 and 11 runners on its scorecard for a total of 25 points. York went 2, 5, 7, 8 and 9 for its 31 points. The two teams were even at 17 points for their fourth and fifth runners, but Wheaton-South held an 8-14 edge when it came to the first through third runners.

York senior Daniel Klysh led the Dukes with a second-place finish in 14:46. Junior Colin Hill was fifth at 14:56, while senior Brian Pratt was seventh in 15:04. Senior Michael Moriarty was eighth in 15:06, while senior Will Yasdick was ninth in 15:07. Senior Ethan Kern was 10th at 15:08 and junior Mickey Vreeland

was 15th at 15:22.

York had a 21-second split between its first and fifth scoring runners and a 22-second split with its first six runners. Top to bottom, the Dukes went 36 seconds from Klysh crossing the line to Vreeland’s finish. Wheaton-South had a 34-second split with its first five runners. Senior William Hauenstein won the regional title in 14:36, 10 seconds in front of Klysh.

York Girls Cross Country The York girls cross country is heading to sectionals after finishing third at the Class 3A Glenbard West regional in Glendale Heights.

York had 56 points. Glenbard West won the regional by two points, 4143 over Wheaton-Warrenville South.

Sophomore Katelyn Winton led the Dukes. She finished eighth with a time of 17:57. Senior Lydia Hickey was ninth in 18:01. Freshman Brooke Berger took 10th in 18:02.

Freshman Bria Bennis was 14th in 18:22, while sophomore Kathleen Buhrfiend was 15th in 18:31. Sophomore Bella Swanson was 17th in 18:38 and freshman Maureen Buhrfiend was 24th in 19:16.

Elmhurst’s Bethel United Church of Christ is presenting “Put On Your Sunday Clothes II – A Salute to Broadway” on Sunday, Nov. 17 at 3 p.m. as part of the church’s Music at Bethel Concert Series.
