Three Cook County minors charged with breaking into Elmhurst vehicles

On Thursday, Sept. 23, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin and Elmhurst Chief of Police Michael Ruth announced that three Hazel Crest juveniles, aged 13, 15 and 17, appeared at a detention hearing charged with breaking into several cars in Elmhurst the previous night.

Each of the juveniles was charged with one count of Burglary to a Motor Vehicle (Class 3 Felony) and two counts of Criminal Trespass to a Motor Vehicle (Class A Misdemeanor).

In addition, the 13-year-old has been charged with one count of Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon, a Class 4 Felony. Following the hearing, the judge ordered that the juveniles be placed on electronic monitoring and returned home.

cers located the juveniles who were taken into custody at that time. It is alleged that the juveniles gained entry to three vehicles and burglarized one vehicle. It is further alleged that at the time of his arrest, the 13-year-old juvenile had in his possession a loaded 9 mm pistol with one bullet in the chamber.

“The allegations against these three juveniles are outrageous,” Berlin said.

“Violent crime has no place in a civilized society and, in DuPage County,

it will be met with the full force of the law, regardless of the defendant’s age.

I commend those residents who alerted authorities when they suspected foul play. I thank the Elmhurst Police Department for the quick apprehension of the defendants in this case.”

“The arrest of the suspects in this case is the direct result of concerned citizens reporting suspicious activity,” Ruth said. “I applaud their vigilance and encourage everyone to immediately report any suspicious activity

they may observe.”

The 13-year-old juvenile’s next court appearance is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 21. The 15-year-old juvenile’s next court appearance is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 20.

The 17-year-old juvenile’s next court appearance is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 22.

DuPage County Health Department Executive Director Karen Ayala added her own remarks.

“It is important to understand that fully vaccinated individuals still retain high levels of protection against the most serious outcomes related to COVID-19, and that there is NOT an urgency to receive the booster dose.

Vaccine supply of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine is robust currently and with over 200 vaccine providers in DuPage County alone, individuals will not experience the challenges for this dose that were present at the outset of vaccination efforts earlier this year.”

As the DuPage County Health Department (DCHD) prepares for the reopening of its mass vaccination clinic on Wednesday, Oct. 13 at the DuPage County Fairgrounds location, DCHD will also begin offering a limited number of COVID-19 vaccine boosters at 111 N. County Farm Road in Wheaton and 1111 E. Jackson Street in Lombard to eligible residents by appointment only beginning on Oct. 1.

For any booster vaccine doses offered by DCHD, opportunities are available by appointment only and advance registration is required. Individuals who are currently eligible for a booster shot and previously registered on the Health Department’s vaccine site will receive an email notification with instructions on booking an appointment. Individuals not yet

registered who are seeking a booster dose should register for appointment notifications at www.dupagehealth. org/covid19vaccine or call (630) 6827400 if assistance is needed with registration (e.g., no internet or computer access, need language assistance, or have questions).

Many of the people who are now eligible to receive a booster shot received their initial vaccine early in the

vaccination program and will benefit from additional protection. However, the Health Department continues to prioritize vaccination efforts on reaching the unvaccinated, who are at greatest risk of severe illness, hospitalization, and death due to COVID-19 infection. Currently, DCHD estimates there are approximately 90,000 DuPage County residents who have not yet received any vaccination to pro-

tect them from COVID-19, in spite of being in the eligible population.

All three COVID-19 vaccines available in the U.S. continue to offer protection against COVID-19 and are safe and highly effective at preventing severe illness, hospitalization, and death.

“First and foremost, I want to thank my parents and grandparents for having inspired and supported my writing,” Xochitl said during Wednesday’s board meeting. “I’m tearing up right now because I love them. I know how proud they are of me, and I’ve dedicated my writing to them. I would also like to thank my English teachers, especially Mr. Oakson and Mr. Escobedo.”

Only 284 students from across the United States were accepted into the writing competition. Of that, only 136 were selected to receive Certificates of Superior Writing.

Participating students submit two pieces of writing, according to Oakson. The first is an example of their best writing, up to six pages long.

The second writing sample is based on a theme selected by NCTE. The theme for 2021 was “Community.”

Bail set for two accused of hijacking car at gunpoint Police from several agencies join high-speed pursuit, apprehend suspect

On Thursday, Sept. 23, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin and Villa Park Chief of Police Michael Rivas announced that bond had been set at $2 million with 10% to apply for two individuals charged with carjacking a 35-year-old woman at gunpoint. Kentrell Strong, 18, of Chicago, and Rayshawn Marshall, 18, also of Chicago, appeared at a bond hearing in front of Judge Margaret O’Connell.

On Tuesday, Sept. 21 at 1:54 a.m., officers with the Villa Park Police Department responded to a call on Ardmore Avenue regarding a carjacking.

An investigation into the matter revealed that the victim was sitting in the driver’s seat of her vehicle, a Jeep Cherokee, which was parked in her driveway, when two male subjects wearing hoodies and face masks allegedly approached the vehicle.

It is alleged that one of the subjects asked the victim the time of day and then opened her car door and began to pull her out of the car.

The second male subject then allegedly pointed a gun at her face. It is

further alleged the two men pulled the victim out of the car and drove off in the victim’s car.

Elmhurst police officers observed the Jeep Cherokee on North Avenue and attempted to stop the car. The offenders refused to stop and continued driving at a high rate of speed onto I-290 eastbound. Police officers from multiple agencies, including Hillside, Maywood, Bellwood, Berkeley and Broadview all responded and helped chase the victim’s car. The offenders got off I-290 on the 25th Avenue ramp and crashed the victim’s car before fleeing on foot. Both subjects were taken into custody by Broadview police officers approximately 500 yards from the victim’s car.

“The charges and $2 million bail in this case once again sends a loud and clear message that in DuPage County, we will not put up with this type of random, violent behavior,” said Berlin. “I would like to commend the Villa Park Police Department on their truly outstanding work on this case and I thank the Bellwood, Maywood,

Berkeley, Hillside and Broadview Police Departments for their assistance in taking the alleged offenders into custody. The swift apprehension of these two men demonstrates DuPage County law enforcement’s commitment to public safety and sends the message that in DuPage County if you commit the type of violent crime alleged in this case you will be caught and you will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. I would also like to thank Assistant State’s Attorney Denis Cahill for his work in preparing a strong case against each of these defendants.”

“Perpetrators who commit a vehicular hijacking i.e., ‘car-jacking’ typically take that vehicle from a victim by force. In this case a weapon was shown to our victim, leaving her visibly shaken and in great fear of bodily harm. This, or any other, stolen vehicle is then used at a later time to commit other violent crimes. This is why it is critically important to arrest people who commit this type of crime. We would like to acknowledge the tireless hard work performed by the Villa Park

Officers and Investigators; as well as the numerous other law enforcement agencies who were vital in taking the subjects into custody. We would also like to thank State’s Attorney Bob Berlin and the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office for working in lockstep to bring about these charges. Let this case send a message we will exhaust all resources to bring violent offenders to justice,” said Rivas.

Both Strong and Marshall have been charged with one count of Aggravated Vehicular Hijacking, a Class X Felony, and one count of Aggravated Possession of a Stolen Motor Vehicle, a Class 1 Felony.

If found guilty, Strong and Marshall face a penalty of between 21 and 45 in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

The next court appearance for Marshall is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 20. Strong’s next court appearance is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 21.

Addison Library presents its ‘Superfans’ From board member to book club leader

(Editor’s note: Today the Addison Independent and the Addison Public Library bring another installment in a series of stories about patrons of the Addison Public Library who are known as ‘Superfans.’ This effort is to spotlight Library Card Sign-up Month. Other segments will follow in future editions of the Independent.)

Judy Belanger has lived in Addison since 1965. In her 56 years living in Addison, she spent 30 of them serving on the Addison Public Library’s Board of Trustees.

Before joining the library board, Belanger often visited the original Addison library with her family, creating many memories along the way.

“The library was in the Village Hall, along with dancing lessons. Our daughter was about 5 at the time. We took her to classes and she’d tap dance down the hall to the library at the other end of the municipal building,” she said.

“The library was quiet, and the head librarian used to cringe every Saturday morning at the tap shoes coming down the hall.”

Belanger joined the board in 1971, just three years after the first stand-alone library building opened. During her time on the Board, Belanger and her fellow trustees oversaw the front addition to the original library building at 2 Friendship Plaza, which is now a District 88 administrative building.

“The old library had a balcony. The choir from the high school sang Christmas carols from there. It was lovely,” she said.

Between attending monthly board meetings and annual library conferences, Belanger was an active board member who was unafraid to go to bat for the things she wanted to see at the library. Since then, she’s been pleased to see the changes that she wanted finally take effect.

“Before I retired, I wanted concessions in the library, so that when I went to board meetings I could grab a Coke and take it with me, and I was voted down at the board meeting. As soon as [the new library building] opened I noticed the vending machine!” she said. “Another time

in the late 90s, we voted on a staff dress code that there would be no denim worn. I had a denim jumper that had fairytale characters all around the bottom, so I wore that jumper every chance I had after they voted me down about the denim. And now in [the new] building, staff can wear jeans!”

Her final year on the library board was in 2001, seven years before the current library building opened. Since then, she has remained a library supporter who regularly makes use of

her library card.

“It’s been fun to watch how the library has grown with the growth of the community. I would have never guessed how things could have changed in 30 years. The growth is unbelievable. Even when I was still subbing, even the change from when I retired to now is unbelievable.”

One such change was seeing Mary Medjo Me Zengue, originally hired during Belanger’s tenure in 1996, earn promotions over time to eventually become the library’s executive director in 2004.

Since leaving the board, Belanger has remained in Addison and enjoys two physical reminders of her service on the board: her family’s names on the bricks in front of the library, and the statue of the reading boy that sits outside the current library building. Belanger has a miniature version of the statue at home that was gifted to her upon retirement.

“It’s been great having [the library] available in the town all this time,” she said. “It’s been a part of my life for a long time. That’s why we’re at Clarendale, that’s why we’re staying here.”

Belanger moved to Clarendale when the building first opened and was one of the first 12 people to live there. She wasted no time connecting with her fellow residents, starting a book club soon after moving in.

“To have a book club of 20 is quite a growth over the last year and a half, two years,” she said. “I am proud of it.”

As a retired school librarian, Belanger is no stranger to reading book reviews and keeping up with the latest releases from book publishers, making her a natural fit to lead the new book club. At Clarendale, she and other residents began swapping book recommendations and decided to make the book club official.

“What I have enjoyed about it is we meet every week, so we divide the book into 4 by pages and talk about a fourth of the book each time. You can really get into what the story is about when you spread it out over a month at

a time.”

Belanger knew she could rely on the library to support her book club, working with library staff to order copies of their selected books through interlibrary loan as needed and delivering books to Clarendale via curbside pickup.

“The library through all of this experience has been so great to me, getting the amount of books I need plus large print and a couple of audiobooks for my clientele,” she said.

“They have been fantastic in helping me meet the needs we have had in order to run a book club. And it’s obvious that it’s not because they know I was a board member.”

A true library advocate, Belanger often encourages her fellow Clarendale residents to take advantage of everything that is available to them at the library.

“I bring residents when the library comes and see that they get registered for their library card. I also bring my laptop with me when we have book club in case they want to learn how to download books. I’ll even call the library [on behalf of residents] to request they bring books when they come.”

Clarendale residents got to learn even more about the library services available to them during a personalized tour of the library in late summer 2021. Belanger was one of the tour attendees, and said she was surprised and delighted by all the technology that has become available, including the large format printer, sewing machines, and 3D printers.

“Everyone at Clarendale has been so impressed,” she said. “Some people came from towns where they had larger libraries and they liked ours better. Others came and couldn’t believe how much stuff we had here.”

Between her experience as a school librarian, library trustee, and book club leader, Belanger truly knows the value of a library, especially for children. She hopes everyone in Addison comes to know the value of their library, too.

“This library has really kept up with the times,” she said. “I can’t wait to see what comes next.”

Center for the Arts to present ‘Tales and Stories’ by Karla Wong The exhibition “Tales and Stories”

by Karla Wong opens at the Addison Center for the Arts on Wednesday, Oct. 6.

The public is invited to the artist’s reception on Saturday, Oct. 9 from 1 to 4 p.m. Face masks are required to attend this reception.

The ACA will feature the dreamlike paintings of Karla Wong, a rising art star of international renown who lives in Addison. Recently, Karla Wong was awarded Best in Show at the Alliance of Fine Art’s 2021 “Best of the Best Show” for one of her colorful magical realist paintings that incorporate themes of Mexican folklore and, more recently, pop-culture genres like steampunk.

“In each of my works, I try to express the love that I have for culture that is ingrained in me,” Wong said.

“I chose to reach out beyond the typical and enter the world of magical surrealism, creating my own characters ...I gave them their own life, playing with the colors without sparing anything.”

She has been in group shows and had solo exhibitions throughout the Chicago metro area including the

National Museum of Mexican Art in Chicago, Woman Made Gallery, and she is an award-winning member of the Elmhurst Artists’ Guild.

In addition to being a local hero, Karla Wong’s artistic influence is being recognized internationally. In October/November 2019, Wong organized “Guelaguetza de Colores” at the Addison Center for the Arts, where she curated a group show of local and Mexican artists. She regularly exhibits in Mexico and has collaborated with Middle and South American consulates and cultural ambassadors.

“I have exhibited my work in the state of Oaxaca, in Puebla and Mexico City, as well as in museums, houses of culture, cultural centers, government dependencies and municipal palaces,” she said. “Beautiful places have served as framework to my art.”

She grew up in Oaxaca, Mexico, and she feels like her heart is still there.

Viewpoint Press conference at Planned Parenthood Health Center in Aurora

By U.S. Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi I recently had the privilege to speak at the Planned Parenthood Health Center in Aurora alongside Gov. J.B. Pritzker and U.S. Reps. Lauren Underwood and Bill Foster about our unwavering support of a woman’s right to choose.

As a member of the Pro-Choice Caucus, I am deeply disturbed by the SB8 law in Texas. SB8 bans abortions after only six weeks— when most women barely know they’re pregnant—provides no exceptions for pregnancies from rape or incest, and it creates a bounty hunter system of citizen vigilantes.

We are in the midst of a global pandemic where we have learned the value of healthcare. And yet, Texas has decided to directly target women’s healthcare through an unconstitutional law. The constitution is not a buffet-style menu where a state can pick and

choose the rights it upholds and the ones that it denies. A woman’s right to choose, like all constitutional rights, is federally guaranteed. Last week, the House was scheduled to vote on the Women’s Health Protection Act, which I’m proud to cosponsor, in order to enshrine reproductive health care in law.

I will ensure that this body conducts their study with pure intentions to reduce the waste and mismanagement running rampant in the organ transplant system in the United States and to save the lives of the over a hundred thousand people on the organ waiting list.

Facebook should not be profiting off this type of content that leaves women and girls at risk of being abused or of worsening mental health issues, and I am committed to this investigation and determining what solutions Facebook can provide.

DCHP: Vaccines work at preventing COVID-19 severe illness

COVID-19 vaccines continue to offer the best form of protection against COVID-19 and help prevent severe illness, hospitalization and death, according to the DuPage County Health Department (DCHD).

In DuPage County, 96 percent of COVID-19 cases and 99 percent of related hospitalizations and deaths since December of 2020 have occurred in residents who are not fully vaccinated. The DCHC is again urging eligible residents, ages 12 years and older, to get vaccinated against COVID-19 to protect themselves, their loved ones, and their community.

“With COVID-19 hospitalizations and deaths occurring primarily in unvaccinated persons, it is evident the vaccines are effective at preventing severe illness from COVID-19,” said Karen Ayala, executive director of DuPage County Health Department. “COVID-19 vaccinations help keep our communities safe, our children in school, and protect those who are not yet eligible for vaccination.”

According to the latest CDC COVID-19 vaccination data, 88 percent of eligible residents 12 years and older in DuPage County have received at least one COVID-19 vaccine dose, and 70 percent are fully vaccinated.

Of residents 65 years and older, 99.9 percent have received at least one COVID-19 vaccine dose, and 85 percent are fully vaccinated.

However, among 12- to 17-year-olds in DuPage County, 78 percent have received at least one COVID-19 vaccine dose, and only 59 percent are fully vaccinated.

To help reduce spread in schools and the community, all unvaccinated persons aged 12 years and older are urged to get vaccinated against COVID-19 as soon as possible.

The DCHD is actively monitoring the situation regarding COVID-19 boosters for fully vaccinated people.

Last week, a U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advisory committee recommended a Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine booster dose for individuals 65 years of age and older and at high risk of severe COVID-19.

These booster dose plans are dependent on a full clinical review and recommendations provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), which was scheduled to conduct this review on Sept. 22-23.

DCHD will share additional updates as more information becomes available.

Each year, the Kazma Family Foundation, in conjunction with the Catholic Education Foundation (CEF), presents awards to eighth graders actively attending a Catholic parish in the Diocese of Joliet and

District 88 Crosstown Classic takes place Oct. 1

It’s football season, and District 88 invites all stakeholders to attend the District 88 Crosstown Classic Football Game between the Willowbrook Warriors and the Addison Trail Blazers on Friday, Oct. 1.

This year marks the 55th crosstown classic, and the teams will take to the gridiron at Willowbrook, 1250 S. Ardmore Ave. in Villa Park. This will be Willowbrook’s Homecoming game.

Terry Biefed, a member of Fenton’s class of 1958, checks out his football photo from back in the day when he was a student athlete. He was one of three members to visit Fenton to tour the school on Thursday, Sept. 9. After Fenton, Biefed went on to receive a Bachelor of Science degree in Aeronautics and Astronautics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and later was responsible for the launch of all GPS satellites, communication satellites and weather satellites.
