Bensenville welcomes MTR Truck Center

Bensenville welcomed MTR Truck Center to the neighborhood last week with a ribbon cutting celebration on Friday, June 14. The new 12,000-square-foot facility is located at 910 County Line Road and is the new home for the sales department, parts department and additional space for servicing vehicles.

DuPage Foundation awards grants to health and human services agencies Grants for 2019 total $523,880

For nearly 33 years, the DuPage Foundation’s Community Needs grant program has supported programs and projects that enrich the quality of life for DuPage County residents.

That trend continued this past spring when the Foundation awarded $523,880 to 38 local not-forprofits doing work in the area of Health and Human Services with a great deal of impact. Grants were presented at the Foundation’s June 12th spring grant open house.

Among the recipients were: • Catholic Charities, Diocese of Joliet received $20,000 to support Emergency Service and Homeless Prevention assistance to DuPage County residents who are homeless or at risk of homelessness through financial support and case management.

• DuPage Health Coalition received $20,000 to increase health care access for vulnerable residents by paying a portion of their monthly premiums (helping them to get high quality health insurance) and by providing health literacy training.

• DuPage PADS received $20,000 to support the Family Outreach Program that provides access to stabilizing services and consistent case management to end family homelessness.

• DuPage Senior Citizens Coun-

cil received $10,000 to support the Well Being Checks Service Program to ensure seniors are in good mental and physical health and their surroundings are safe and secure.

• Easter Seals DuPage & Fox Valley received $10,000 to support parent liaison services to help parents of children with developmental disabilities cope with challenges and stress, improve family stability, and support their child.

• Elmhurst Walk-in Assistance Network received $10,000 to provide emergency financial assistance to people in need in the community.

• Loaves & Fishes Community Services received $28,000 to support emergency assistance and car donation programs to provide economic stability that struggling families need to lead healthy, productive lives.

• Mayslake Village received $5,000 to support the Spread the Health Program, which provides financial assistance to residents that qualify to access medical, dental, and vision care that Medicare does not cover.

• Metropolitan Family Services DuPage received $20,000 to support the emergency shelter which provides safe refuge, trauma-informed counseling, and life skills training to victims of domestic violence and their children.

• Northeast DuPage Special Recreation Association (NEDSRA) received $20,000 to purchase a wheelchair accessible bus in order to provide door-to-door transportation to programs for individuals with disabilities.

• Northern Illinois Food Bank received $20,000 to support the Take 50 Foods to Encourage Program to assist member agencies in accessing highly nutritious foods for distribution at a 50% discount.

• Serenity House Counseling Services, Inc. received $2500 to sup-

port the purchase of two laptops and two printers for the Individualized Employment Program, which provides job search assistance.

• Special Kids Day received $6,000 to support a December holiday celebration for families who have children with special needs.

• YWCA Metropolitan Chicago received $20,000 to support the Project HELP Parent Mentor Program and Parent Education Workshops that build on family strength, foster family resilience, and minimize the risk of child abuse and neglect.

College to become Elmhurst University in 2020

Building on nearly 150 years of preparing students for successful careers and lives, Elmhurst College will change its name to Elmhurst University, effective June 30, 2020.

“At this pivotal time in our history, less than two years away from our 150th anniversary in 2021, the decision to change our name to Elmhurst University marks the exciting start of the next chapter of our story,” said Elmhurst College President Troy D. VanAken. “While this is certainly a new and significant development, it is

the result of an ongoing, collaborative process. It reflects discussions that have been taking place for some time regarding how we should celebrate who we are, what we have become, and what we need to be in order to best serve our students for generations to come.”

will change, Elmhurst’s identity, core values, and emphasis on liberal arts education and real-world, professional preparation, will remain the same.

The university name more accurately reflects Elmhurst’s current educational profile as a comprehensive higher education institution offering undergraduate and graduate programs in the liberal arts and applied sciences, while anticipating opportunities for new programs and partnerships.

The change comes at a time when the College has seen record enrollments and fundraising in the past couple of years.

The name change also honors the 1925 vision of H. Richard Niebuhr, Elmhurst College’s sixth president, of an “ever-widening circle” of opportunity for the College to reach an ever-widening circle of diverse students with multiple interests and needs.

“A change in name will not alter our commitment to outstanding teaching, personal education and the fostering of an inclusive and supportive campus learning community that promotes social justice. These characteristics are central to how we promote academic excellence and achievement, and responsible citizenship,” said Ed Momkus, chair of the Board of Trustees and an alumnus from the Class of 1974. “As one of more than 36,000 proud alumni, I believe in and treasure my Elmhurst

education and the underlying values that support it.

“The tenets that have defined and distinguished us for nearly one and a half centuries will not change—they form the foundation upon which we will continue to build and grow.”

Elmhurst College currently offers more than 60 undergraduate programs of study, as well as 20 master’s degree and graduate certificate programs. Because of the strength and breadth of its academic programs, Elmhurst already is categorized as a university by external entities, including U.S. News & World Report.

More about the name change The name change will enhance Elmhurst’s recruitment efforts across all audiences and especially among international, graduate and non-traditional students because university status is more widely understood by those groups. It will reduce misconceptions some prospective employers may have. It also will pave the way for expanded academic and partnership opportunities for both faculty and students, as well as greater opportunities for participation in international and other off-campus programs.

The name-change idea has been raised periodically over the past several years. It was formally reintroduced in 2016, when President VanAken initiated a strategic planning

process for the campus community in preparation for Elmhurst’s sesquicentennial anniversary.

Over the past year, a robust dialogue took place among campus stakeholders, including faculty, staff and students; and with the larger Elmhurst community, including the Board of Trustees and the Alumni Association Board of Directors. The collected input informed the administration’s ultimate recommendation to change Elmhurst College’s name. The recommendation then was deliberated and endorsed by campus governance groups before going to the Board of Trustees for final approval.

The College’s Advisory Committee for Strategic Planning, which includes membership from the Board of Trustees, faculty, staff, students and alumni, will be asked to lead the transition effort. The committee will work with other campus stakeholders to ensure that all have the opportunity to participate in the planning and implementation of this historic initiative.

“Changing from college to university will now become part of that story,” President VanAken said. “But the most important part has always been the transformative impact of an Elmhurst education on the lives of our students. No matter what we call ourselves, that will always be the heart of our story.”

Wood Dale to annex 9.6 acres for industrial redevelopment The Wood Dale City Council has approved a developer’s proposal to incorporate approximately 9.6 acres of land in 20 unoccupied residential parcels along Washington Street into Wood Dale’s industrial park to be redeveloped as a state-of-the-art light industrial facility. The voluntary annexation and redevelopment of this unincorporated area, has been a long-term goal for the City that has now been achieved.

Transwestern Development Company closed this past February on the 20 properties that comprise the underutilized site. The redevelopment, previously identified by the City on potential future land-use projections, will add value by serving the community through the creation of more than 115 jobs, and added tax and permit revenue for Wood Dale. Mobility will also be enhanced by providing added pedestrian access along Central Avenue.

The site plan calls for a 159,170 square-foot mixed-use office/warehouse and manufacturing facility to be designed to accommodate the growing need for modern and efficient logistics and manufacturing space.

Wood Dale’s location, access to O’Hare, healthy economic conditions and the entire region’s low industrial vacancy rate (Wood Dale recently reached a historic low of .49%) have made it a top performing location within the Chicago O’Hare market.

“This is an ideal opportunity,” said Director of Economic Development Ed Cage. “Developments such as this have been in high demand in the area, and the timing for the annexation could not be better.”

Transwestern has redeveloped similar sites in neighboring communities such as Franklin Park and Bartlett and has fostered tenant/user relationships with premier global businesses such as Johnson & Johnson, Siemens, Sharp, Hanes, Toyota, FedEx and a multitude of others.

The ambitious project has a target completion date of January 2020.

College news Bensenville student graduates from Bradley Molly Cohn from Bensenville graduated with a degree in Marketing - Global Supply Chain Management from Bradley University during the May commencement exercises.

Check-out chaos at Target store Store cash registers on the fritz Saturday before Father’s Day

Shoppers at Target® stores nationwide on Saturday, June 15 experienced long delays checking out when the store cash registers went haywire for approximately two hours.

The Target store in Villa Park, 50 E. North Ave., was no exception.

The registers were shutting down and rebooting, beginning at noon and lasting until just before 2 p.m.

An employee of Target, who asked to remain anonymous as the person is not an official spokesperson for the Minneapolis-based retail giant, told The Independent that the registers would reset after scanning just one or two items.

“We would have to scan an item or two, then get the customer’s payment,” said the source. “If they had more items, we would start over again with more items. It was a slow

The local employee said that initial speculation among workers in Villa Park was that the system had been hacked, based on the timing and nature of the disruption. That theory was dispelled by Target later in the day when a statement was released addressing the register glitches: “an internal technology issue” was the reported cause of the disruption.

“Our technology team worked quickly to identify and fix the issue, and we apologize for the inconvenience and frustration this caused for our guests,” company officials said.

Police said Elk Grove Village Police Department transported Stacy M. Parrish, 30, of Addison, to the Addison Police Department to be processed on an original warrant out of the Addison Police Department for criminal damage to property at around 8:50 p.m.

June 17 Chelsea T. Sachell, 26, of Lombard, was charged with disorderly conduct, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia and no insurance near Lake and Swift at around 9:41 p.m. Police said Sachell activated a siren, and directed a victim using a megaphone to pull her vehicle over, identifying herself as a police officer.

June 16 Police said an officer responded to the Bellwood Police Department at around 6:53 p.m. to transport and process Vincent Galione Jr., 40, of Addison, who had an original warrant out of the Addison Police Department for criminal damage to property and criminal trespass to a vehicle.

June 15 Brian G. Meza, 29, of Woodridge, was charged with DUI and improper lane usage in the 1000 block of S. Westwood Drive at around 4:49 a.m.

Anyone entering a contract has a right to cancel it within three business days if it was signed on the contractor’s visit to their home. In the case of disaster repair, if an insurance carrier denies coverage, the homeowner can cancel the contract within five days of the denial.

More than 100 attend District 4 kindergarten camp Almost 100 of Addison School District 4’s incoming kindergartners are participating in a four-week Kindergarten Camp which began on Monday, June 17. These students are getting a preview of what to expect when they begin attending school full time in August. This is the second year that the Kindergarten Camp has been offered to help students be kindergarten-ready.

Camp Principal Carmela Getz explained that the camp simulates a half-day kindergarten program in order to help prepare the students for the full-day program they will be entering in fall.

There are seven classes—four of which are monolingual and three of which are dual language classrooms.

The students are working on literacy, numeracy, and exploring. Physical

Education is also part of the daily schedule.

Kindergarten camp is held at the Addison Early Learning Center, a school building that was designed to accommodate young learners. This year, District 4 is offering bussing from each of the district’s elementary schools to the AELC to make it more convenient for families to get their children to camp. About half of the students are taking advantage of the bus service.

A free breakfast is also available each day the camp is in session— Monday through Friday, June 17-July 12. Breakfast is served from 8-8:30 a.m. and is available to children and teens ages 18 and younger. Breakfast will not be available on July 4 or July 5, when the camp is closed for the Independence Day holiday.

Slices of life

All I needed to know, I learned from Disney

My kids grew up as part of the Toy Story generation. We watched Toy Story 1 and 2 on our VCR over and over and over. They were favorites, but they weren’t the only animated Disney show we watched. We had a large collection of VHS tapes.

They’re still stored in our basement.

Not sure there’s even a market for that on eBay. While my kids were technically the ones watching the movies, I was aware of them as well. And, somewhere along the way, probably during our 364th viewing of Toy Story or Winnie the Pooh, I realized the storylines not only entertained, but taught life lessons along the way – for kids and parents alike.

Here’s some of what I learned: Dumbo – Sometimes your biggest deficit can turn in to your biggest asset. Don’t be afraid to be different.

Toy Story 1 – You can fly – if you believe you can. To infinity and beyond!

Toy Story 2 – Friendship is both powerful and valuable. Don’t trust a toy that’s never been played with.

Toy Story 3 was released 11 years

after number 2. My kids were no longer itty bits, and neither was the original Toy Story character, Andy.

He was moving off to college, as was my daughter at the time. The movie hit this mom in the gut and probably taught me as much as all of the above combined.

Walt Disney was as storyteller and entertainer. And, while he passed away more than 50 years ago, his legacy continues. Toy Story 4 is set to be released soon – on June 21. You can be assured my family and I will be first in line for tickets. You’ve got a friend in me.

I can’t live without…. How about you?

I was at a fast food joint watching a couple eight-year-old girls sitting in the booth across from me, with the mom-in-charge at the next booth letting them have their space. Or maybe she just wanted a break and to eat her lunch with a little peace and quiet. It amused me the drama coming from the one young gal. “I just can’t live without my iPhone!”

Oh, modern times!

That memory popped into my head a second ago when my computer went wonky and I got the message By “no internet connection.” I said aloud KELLY to my pink office walls, “I can’t live SIMMONS Columnist without the internet!”

Well, I can, for a little bit. I can do all kinds of writing and tasks. Eventually I need internet to send, but a What else do we think we can’t momentary glitch is no biggee. But live without? my reaction was drama.

Cell phones and internet have not been around all that long. Kids today, and parents, think they cannot live without movie players in the van.

What did the pioneers think they could not live without? Kerosene? A yoke for the oxen? A butter churn?

Things like deodorant and tooth floss weren’t common items back then. So many of our must-haves are convenience related. Well, and personal hygiene. Thank goodness.

The first two items that come to mind that I cannot live without, besides floss and deodorant, are books

and music. Magazines can be lumped in with books too. Oh how I love looking at my pretty magazines!

Could I live without them if I had to?

Sure. But there would be a moment of woe-is-me.

A few years ago I thought I could not live without Trident White gum and Coca-Cola. Now those two never pass my lips. Other things change with time too.

What about you? Was there a time you couldn’t get through a day without your Aqua Net? A big comb in your back pocket? Cherry Chapstick?

A 2015 British study names toothbrush, shampoo, and bed the top three items Brits can’t live without.

I love my bed. And having a bed, in general. Could I live without a bed?

Sure. Have you ever slept on a couch, a chair, or the floor?

Television was named, of course.

I love some series on the non-cable outlets and being able to enjoy a movie from the comfort of home is something I appreciate greatly.

Could we forego? Absolutely. Do we want to? Heck no!

Another thing high on the list for Brits is tea. That makes sense for that culture, but did not cross my mind. Is there a beverage you can’t live without? I bet many Americans would say coffee. Or wine.

How often do you catch yourself saying “I can’t live without…”? Do not include a person. We are not going down that road. No one wants to live without their partner, parents, children, pets, friends, etc. Think about things, non-living items.

That little girl was right though.

We cannot live without our phones.

I can for a week (when I am out of country, and it’s lovely), but in real life, I need. Or so I believe.

If some alien came down and zapped all the phones out of our hands, we could go back to writing letters and get land lines reinstalled.

Wouldn’t that be interesting?

But this is our current world and we enjoy our luxuries. It’s good to ponder once in a while, to notice what we can indeed do without. But for right now, my internet is back on and I must send this column off to my editors. It’s my truth: I can’t live without the internet!

Music in the Park continues in Bensenville Residents throughout the surrounding area are invited to come out for everyone’s favorite summer concert series, Wednesday Music In The Park in Bensenville, which continues every through the summer. On Wednesday, July 10, Rico, A Celebration of Santana, will perform.

Presented by President Frank DeSimone and the Bensenville Village Board of Trustees, the schedule of-

fers something for all musical tastes.

Favorite Bensenville restaurants will sell dinner and desert items so families can enjoy their own “Dinner in the Park” prior to the concert. Early in the evening, there are free games and giveaways.

Concert night includes a Classic Car Show and a 50/50 Split-The-Pot raffle to benefit our local charities and civic organizations.

Elmhurst Legion hosts ‘Cars Under Stars & Stripes’

From 6-8 p.m., all are invited to the Elmhurst American Legion THB Post 187 at Spring Rd. and Butterfield in Elmhurst, for “Cars Under the Stars & Stripes,” a car show for the whole family.

The theme for the night of Thursday, July 11 is Corvette Night. Free and open to the public. Visitors are

Public Notices PUBLIC NOTICE PRELIMINARY ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS DETERMINATION The Village of Bensenville intends to apply for and obtain funding for water system improvements utilizing a low interest loan from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) Public Water Supply Loan Program (PWSLP). Section 662.520 of the Illinois Procedures for Issuing Loans from the PWSLP requires that the IEPA publish an assessment of the environmental impacts of proposed public water supply projects to be funded with loans. Prior to granting approval of the plan, the IEPA requires that the public be granted an opportunity to comment as to whether or not the anticipated impacts of the project have been adequately assessed.

The water system improvements projects to be funded by the PWSLP include the following: replacement of portions of the existing White Pines Area water distribution system, which may include lead service lines.

The project consists of 16,923 feet of 8-inch

diameter and 823 feet of 6-inch diameter water mains, valves, valve vaults, fire hydrants, copper water services, abandonment of existing water mains, and construction area restoration.

The IEPA has reviewed the project plan and concurs with the Village’s finding that the proposed project is technically appropriate and cost-effective. Unless new information provided through the public comment process causes a reconsideration, the IEPA will approve this planning at the close of the public comment period.

A copy of the Project Plan and the IEPA Project Summary and Preliminary Environmental Impacts Determination (PEID) are available for public inspection at the Bensenville Village Hall, 12 South Center Street, Bensenville and the Bensenville Public Works Department, 717 E. Jefferson Street, Bensenville.

All interested parties are invited to review the documents and attend the public hearing on July 23, 2019, at 6:30 PM, at the Village of Bensenville Village Hall, 12 South Cen-

Willowbrook baseball team puts up big spring numbers Athletic Booster Club announces annual senior awards

There is a reason the Willowbrook baseball team won more than 20 games this season and dropped just one West Suburban Conference Gold Division contest.

It put up some impressive numbers, particularly when it came to pitching.

The Warriors posted a staff ERA of just 1.22. Jack Nilles went 5-0 with an 0.47 ERA and one save.

Ryan Mintz was 6-2 with a 1.04 ERA in 11 appearances. Joey Guthrie was 3-1 with a 1.00 ERA, while Ethan Pieniazeek had a 2-0 record in nine appearances and had an ERA of 0.00. Josh Roucka went 2-0 with a 2.27 ERA and two saves in

10 appearances.

Mintz struck out 59 batters in 40 1/3 innings and allowed only 30 hits off the 168 batters he faced. Nilles had 36 strikeouts in 30 innings and allowed 20 hits (120 batters faced).

Dax Meyer had 25 strikeouts in 20 innings (113 batters faced, 24 hits).

Guthrie had 27 strikeouts in 35 innings, while Roucka had 19 strikeouts in 12 1/3 innings. Pieniazek had six strikeouts in 13 2/3 innings and allowed only seven hits.

Jack Hines hit .462 with 37 hits in 80 at-bats. He scored 26 runs and had 28 hits to go with 10 doubles and six triples. Mintz hit .352 with 25 hits in 73 at-bats. He scored 21 runs and had 17 RBI. Sam Tumilty hit .325 with 26 hits in 80 at-bats.

He scored 24 runs and had 16 RBI. Scotty Tumilty hit .324 with 22 hits in 68 at-bats. He scored 22 runs and had 11 RBI. Anthony Yannotti hit .298 and had 23 RBI. He had 17 hits, including two triples and two home runs. Trevor Jaloszynski hit .305 with 18 hits in 59 at-bats. He scored 17 runs and had 17 RBI to

go with five doubles.

Willowbrook hit .312 as a team.

Hines led the team with 24 stolen bases, while Scotty Tumilty swiped 20 bases, and Isaac Gaines and Sam Tumilty each stole 14.

Catcher Marshall McDonnell made no errors this season on 205 total chances. Scotty Tumilty made only one error in 30 chances.

The Addison Trail softball team placed a pair of players on the West Suburban Conference Gold Division all-conference team this season.

Izzy Aramburu and Anna Ruffolo both earned all-WSC Gold accolades after turning in strong 2019 campaigns. Both players were sophomores this season.

Ruffolo hit .476 with three home runs. “Anna had a tremendous season,” said Addison Trail coach Mark Olson. “She stepped right into the third spot in our lineup.”

Aramburu hit .385 and provided another strong presence in the Blazers order. “Izzy hit the ball well,” said Olson. “She can swing the bat. She also did a tremendous job for us behind the plate as our catcher. She was rock-solid.”

Addison Trail finished the season 14-14 overall. “We started three freshmen and three sophomores,” said Olson. “This season was very encouraging. We had a couple juniors contributing as well.”

Seniors Sophia Hawkins, McKenna Gayon and Maddie Biancalana also were key cogs for the Blazers.

Olson also has reason for future optimism with a deep pitching staff returning that includes Dakota Zimmermann and Madison Domek.

“They carried the most innings for us,” said Olson. “We have all five pitchers returning, which always is a positive. That’s one less thing you have to worry about. That’s 85 percent of the game right there.”

Olson said the team’s 14-14 record is a little misleading. “We were 14-14 so that’s a study in being average I guess,” he said. “However, we played extremely well at times. We ended the season with a strong effort in the playoffs where it was 3-2 and went nine innings against Rolling Meadows. Every day these girls came with a great effort and a great attitude.”

Olson, to say the least, is looking forward to the 2020 season.

“I expect a lot of big things with the amount of kids we have coming back,” he said.

Claryce Dooley, Matt Knudtson, Dylan Mejia-Ruiz and Scheelk III were the recipients of the Lauren M. Kiefer Memorial Scholarship.

Sabrina Edwards, Joseph Garner, Palma and William Stout were winners of the Susan Jurkonis Scholarship.

Katelyn McCann and Scheelk III were winners of the John Hamann Scholarship.

Anthony Devens, Madeline Flaskamp, Knudtson and Tyler Walenga were recipients of the Villa Park Warriors Youth Football & Cheer Scholarship. Walenga also was the recipient of the Taylor Family Scholarship.

A little inter-program action occurred recently at Plunkett Athletic Complex in Elmhurst.

The Elmhurst American Legion Post 187 baseball team recorded an 8-6 victory over the Post 187 17U Muddogs squad.

The 17U team put up five runs in the fourth inning to take a 6-2 lead, but Post 187 came back to score four runs in the bottom of the fourth and two more in the fifth.

Tommy Ryan went 1-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Tim Bowbin had two hits and two RBI. AJ Parnell had three hits, scored three runs and had two RBI. Ryan Malek had a hit, a run scored and an RBI. Parnell homered in the game and doubled. Bowbin had a double.

Ryan, Parnell and Malek each stole two bases.

Malek was the winner in relief.

He struck out two in three innings and allowed two hits. Ian Steinorth came in and recorded the save. He struck out three in the seventh inning.

AJ Howard led the 17U Legion team with three hits, a run scored and two RBI. He had a double. Jose Perez, Jack Ryan, Julius Sanchez and Ricky Saucedo each had a hit.

Sanchez scored two runs, while Saucedo and Jack Klein each had an RBI. Andrew Zwolinski took the loss.

He struck out four in two innings of work.

Post 187 also scored a 10-0 victory over Elgin Post 57 and then

dropped a 7-5 decision to Wheaton Post 76 at the Post 76 American Legion field in Carol Stream. Elmhurst trailed 7-3 at one point.

Parnell had two hits and scored two runs. Aidan Kress had two hits and an RBI. Malek had a hit and an RBI. Bowbin had a hit and scored a run. Jose Alvarez had an RBI. Jack Enright had a hit, an RBI and a run scored. Connor Gwaltney had a hit.

Parnell and Malek each had a double, while Enright had a triple.

Parnell, Miles King and Enright pitched in the game.

Post 187 17U Muddogs In addition to facing the big club, the 17U Muddogs team dropped a 6-5 game to Windy City Prospects 18U in a game played at Madison Meadows in Lombard.

Post 187 had 12 hits in the game.

Post 187 then earned a 9-3 win over CBA Niles 16U in a game played at Redmond Park in Bensenville.

Zwolinski earned the win. He struck out seven in five innings and allowed only three hits. Sanchez pitched one inning and struck out two.

Elmhurst then dropped an 11-2 game to Wheaton Post 76 at Redmond Park. Flores Jr. had two hits, two runs scored and a walk. Galanis had a hit and an RBI. Mitchell and Abraham Otero each had a hit, while Howard had an RBI. Galanis doubled and Flores Jr. stole two bases.

Post 187 15U Muddogs Post 187’s 15U team dropped an 8-0 game to HB Prime 9 15U at Thelen Park in Spring Grove. Matthew Maziarka and Oscar Torres each had a hit. Will Ryan stole a base. George O’Brien allowed only two earned runs and struck out two.

In a 14-0 loss to the McHenry County Outlaws 15U team at Thelen Park, O’Brien, Torres, Ryan and Jake Marshall each had a hit. Matthew McFarland had two walks.

O’Brien and Marshall each had a double.

In an 18-0 loss to Lightning 15U at Richmond-Burton High School in Richmond, Jace Klein had a hit, while Maziarka and Torres each drew a walk.

As Illinois prepares for the legalization of recreational marijuana use in 2020, a new report from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety reveals some alarming statistics on drivers’ perceptions of the dangers of driving high. Nationally, an estimated 14.8 million drivers report getting behind the wheel within one hour after using marijuana in the past 30 days.

The impairing effects of marijuana are usually experienced within the first one to four hours after using the drug, (1) and marijuana users who drive high are up to twice as likely to be involved in a crash. (2) “Marijuana can significantly alter reaction times and impair a driver’s judgement,” said Dr. David Yang, executive director of the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. “Yet, many drivers don’t consider marijuana-impaired driving as risky as other behaviors like driving drunk or talking on the phone while driving. It is important for everyone to understand that driving after recently using marijuana can put themselves and others at risk.”

In the AAA Foundation survey, more than 13% of Americans viewed driving within an hour after using marijuana as only “slightly dangerous” or “not dangerous at all”

– far more than other risky behaviors like alcohol-impaired driving (1.2%), drowsy driving (1%), and prescription drug-impaired driving (2.2%).

Other survey findings show that: • Nearly 70% of respondents think a driver is unlikely to be caught by the police when driving within an hour after using marijuana.

• Millennials (nearly 14%) are most likely to report driving within one hour after using marijuana in the past 30 days, followed by Generation Z (10%).

• Men (8%) are more likely than women (5%) to report driving shortly after using marijuana in the past 30 days.

“Illinois needs to prepare for the impact legal marijuana use will have on the safety of its roads,” said Beth Mosher, spokesperson for AAA – The Auto Club Group. “That includes more tools and training for law enforcement officers and a substantial public awareness effort, especially for teens and young adults.”
