Candidates sought for Miss Addison 2018

The community is ready to begin its annual hunt for Miss Addison 2018. Three females, between the ages of 17-21 will be awarded a Village of Addison Scholarship for the 2018-19 academic year based on the eligibility/requirements. Miss Addison will receive a $2,000 scholarship, First Runner-Up will be awarded a $1,000 scholarship and Second Runner-Up will be awarded a $500 scholarship.

Application deadline is June 8, 2018. The scholarship recipients will be announced during the Miss Addison Pageant on June 27.

In order to be eligible, the candidate must be a female between the ages of 17-21 and must be a resident within the corporate limits of the Village of Addison.

Applications must include the following: 1. Completed and signed scholarship application 2. Essay 3. Photo 4. Signed eligibility and requirement sheet 5. Transcript or last Report Card, including your current GPA 6. Letter of recommendation • Candidates must be available on Tuesday, June 19 at 6 p.m. for a Meet & Greet with the Pageant Committee and Judges • Candidates must be also be available on Wednesday, June 27 for the actual Pageant which begins at 7 p.m. at Medinah Shrine Center, 550 Shriners Dr. in Addison. Candidates must arrive by not later than 4:30 p.m.

Walgreens, America’s pharmacist, got its start in Illinois

A pharmacist at Walgreens for 37 years, Joel Karlinsky might often see people on their worst days, coming to him for antidotes to their health maladies.

But in providing a helping hand and friendly smile, Karlinsky formed a bond with his customers. One regular appreciated the service so much that he had an engraved Montblanc pen made for Karlinsky with the pharmacist’s name on it.

“I tried to go out of my way to be nice to them,” said Karlinsky, now retired, who for a time managed the pharmacy at a Walgreens near the company’s Deerfield headquarters.

“Customer service goes a long way.

Everybody fills the same prescriptions, but if you’re providing them with a friendly, knowledgeable individual, that gives them a level of service above and beyond.”

That pharmacist’s personalized touch mirrors the 117-year-old company’s origin story, when founder Charles R. Walgreen Sr. and colleague Arthur C. Thorsen personally greeted each customer who came to the door of their modest 20-by-50foot pharmacy on Chicago’s South Side.

Some customers also called in their orders to Walgreen. He famously tried to keep the person on the phone long enough to give his assistant Caleb Danner time to gather the requested items and personally deliver them.

Company historians have coined it the “two-minute drill.”

“He was bringing a new level of customer service to the industry,” said Michael Polzin, a longtime Walgreens spokesman. “It was one of the things he focused on early on.”

Walgreen, born near Galesburg, moved to Dixon with his family as a child. At 16, he got his first pharmacy job, working for Horton’s Drugstore, where he earned $4 a week. He quit after a year and a half, but continued in the pharmacy business, working for several pharmacists after arriving in Chicago in 1893.

Walgreen ended up at Isaac Blood’s drugstore inside Barrett’s Hotel at the corner of Cottage Grove and Bowen avenues. In 1901, Blood sold the store to Walgreen for $6,000.

It took Walgreen years to pay off a loan he needed to make the purchase.

Walgreen became an innovator, taking what had been a dimly lit drugstore and installing bright lights.

Honors Italian class visits Elio Pizza on Fire On April 25, Addison Trail students who are enrolled in Italian 3 Honors participated in the school’s first “Mangia Bene con Elio (Eat well with Elio).”

During the event, Elio Bartolotta from Elio Pizza on Fire in Addison made authentic and classic Southern Italian dishes. Bartolotta demonstrated how to make homemade pasta al forno (baked pasta), arancini (fried Italian rice balls), tabule (a vegetarian couscous salad) and cannoli, and the students then sampled the food. Bartolotta spoke with the students in Italian,

and his son, Addison Trail sophomore Salvatore, also attended the event.

Addison Trail world language teachers Enza Spilotro and Judie Vitiritti-Lynch coordinated the culinary experience.

“I’m always trying to find ways to bring Italy to the students, and this was a great opportunity to accomplish that goal,” Spilotro said. “We talk a lot about Italian culture in all of our classes, and one very important part of the Italian culture is of course food! We discuss how Italian food is not only a way of life, but it also is an art.”

malted milkshake, invented by soda jerk Ivar “Pop” Coulson in 1922.

Coulson added vanilla ice cream to the common malted milk drink, which consisted of milk, chocolate syrup and malt powder.

Daniel Okrent, in his book “Last Call: The Rise and Fall of Prohibition,” suggests the store also benefited from alcohol sales during that time, because pharmacies were allowed to sell booze for medicinal purposes.

It was in the 1950s when Walgreens entered the modern retail era, with the introduction of self-service stores. Until then, clerks working

behind counters retrieved goods off shelves for customers.

By the 1980s, the company was building more and more stand-alone stores instead of those in strip malls or attached to other retailers. By the next decade, the company started building drive-through pharmacy lanes.

Expansion has continued in recent years: in 2010, Walgreens acquired New York-based pharmacy chain Duane Reade; in 2014, it merged with Switzerland-based Alliance Boots, and in 2017, it got regulatory approval to purchase about 2,000 Rite Aid stores.

With that addition, Walgreens will have about 10,000 locations in the United States.

So how can a chain that’s become America’s pharmacist maintain its personal touch?

“It was so important to Charles Walgreen Sr. to make that connection with his customers,” says Polzin, the company spokesman. “I think that carries through today, too.

“Obviously, we’re a much, much bigger retailer and pharmacist than we were back then, but we still want to provide that care to each individual that comes into our stores.”

Legislation introduced by State Rep. Deb Conroy (D-Villa Park) allowing DuPage County to consolidate the functions of the county election commission into the office of the county clerk advanced unanimously out of House recently.

“House Bill 5123 is a step in the right direction in ensuring that our elections will be managed with the utmost integrity,” said Conroy. “This allows DuPage County, which is one of only two counties in the entire state with a separate board of election commissioners, to finally transfer the functions of the election commission to the county clerk. This change will bring more transparency and efficiency to the way elections are held in DuPage County.”

House Bill 5123 allows the County Board to dissolve the functions of the election commission into the county clerk’s office. Currently, only two counties and seven municipali-

ties in Illinois have election authorities independent of the county clerk.

In every other Illinois county, election-related functions are executed by the county clerk. The bill and is supported by DuPage County, County Board Chairman Dan Cronin, and the Better Government Association.

“We are pleased with the bi-partisan support this measure has received and are grateful for Representative Conroy’s leadership,” said DuPage County Board Chairman Dan Cronin, who traveled to Springfield to testify on behalf of the legislation.

“Our goal is to create an efficient, effective system for administering elections in DuPage County. We believe dissolving the DuPage Election Commission and folding those duties into the County Clerk’s office will result in improved voter services. We are eager to see this bill passed by the full Senate and to see the Governor sign it as soon as possible.”

The Addison Trail baseball team is on a roll at exactly the right time of the season.

The Blazers had won nine of their last 11 contests heading into today’s Class 4A regional game against district neighbor Willowbrook.

Addison Trail finished the regular season with a 19-12 mark.

“We’ve been playing awesome,” said Blazers coach Mike Kennedy.

In recent times, the Blazers have defeated Hinsdale Central, Wheeling and Wheaton Academy, while also sweeping three-game West Suburban Conference Gold Division series’

from Morton and Proviso East.

“We’ve been playing really well,” said Kennedy. “We are playing good defense and getting timely hitting.

Things are starting to click well for us.

Even when we get down in games, the kids keep fighting. They know we are never out of it. We’ve been grinding all year. It’s been fun to watch.”

Addison Trail finished the WSC Gold season with a 12-6 record. Kennedy noted it’s the program’s best conference record in six years when that team went 13-5 and before that the Blazers hadn’t produced a WSC Gold record of that ilk in 20-some years, the coach added.

“AJ has been playing well on the mound and at the plate for us,” said Kennedy. “Simon is hitting over .400 and Michael Scali, our shortstop, has made two errors all year. He has a .985 fielding percentage or something close to that. It’s ridiculous.”

Other key contributors of late include the likes of Nick Daudelin, An-

gelo Pahopos and Matt Crandall.

“Nick has thrown well on the mound for us,” said Kennedy. “Angelo is swinging a hot bat. His conference batting average is .400. That’s really good. Matt Crandall just had four RBI for us against Wheaton Academy.

This has been fun to watch. It’s been the whole team. It’s a different guy coming up every day and contributing. We’re a tough team to play because you don’t know where the hits are coming from. Plus, our pitching has been real good.”

The pitching staff is anchored by standout Trevor Fulmer, who had 76 strikeouts through the end of the regular season. Kennedy noted that total is

tops in DuPage County by nine strikeouts. He’s also 7-0 on the season.

“Trevor has been awesome,” said Kennedy. “He’s tied for second in the county in wins. He’s having a year.

Two of the other games he started we had the lead when he left, so he was in line to win those games as well.”

Addison Trail took two of three games against Willowbrook during the regular season.

“It should be a great game,” said Kennedy, in reference to the regional matchup. “They are a really good team. It’s a tall order to beat a team three times in a year, but I like our team and I like how we are playing right now.”

Fenton’s Katrina Krebasch finishes fourth in state in pole vault Becomes fourth Bison girls track athlete to earn state medal

Fenton’s Katrina Krebasch put herself in the school record books.

Krebasch recently took fourth in the state in the pole vault at the Class 3A girls state track and field finals held at O’Brien Stadium at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.

Krebasch becomes only the fourth girl in Fenton track history to earn a state medal.

Krebasch tied for first in her preliminary flight with a mark of 10-9. She increased that height to 11-6 the next day to earn her state medal. The state-championship height was 11-9.

Krebasch joins Emilia Burris, Latrice Gray and

Wendy Winters as Fenton girls track and field state medalists.

Burris was fourth in the long jump and seventh in the 100 at the 2015 Class 3A finals. Gray took fifth in the high jump at the 1999 Class AA finals.

Winters is the program’s most decorated state athlete. She took third in the 220 low hurdles at the 1978 Class AA state meet and then took second in the long jump, fourth in the 110 low hurdles, sixth in the 220 dash and second in the 220 low hurdles at the 1979 state meet.

Willowbrook boys volleyball team wraps up regular season Cookingham, Keefe earn all-WSC Gold honors; Five cited for academic excellence

The Willowbrook boys volleyball team concluded regular-season play with a 16-18 overall record. The Warriors also went 3-3 in West Suburban Conference Gold Division play.

“Our record could have been much different,” coach Ryan Bazon pointed out. “There were about 10 matches where we lost a game by two points (24-26, 26-28, 29-31). We were extremely competitive against some of the best teams in the state.”

Willowrook recently took fifth out of 12 teams at its own Willowbrook Warrior Invite with a 3-2 record.

In recent contests, Willowbrook lost 22-25, 25-18, 15-8 to District

88 neighbor Addison Trail, defeated Lake Zurich 25-23, 25-23, lost to Hinsdale Central 25-14, 25-11, defeated Glenbard East 25-15, 25-16 and defeated Leyden 25-18, 25-23.

Heading into the playoffs, Tim Keefe has 246 kills, is the owner of a 91.75 serving percentage, has 14 aces, 15 blocks, 171 digs and a 2.22 passer rating on a 3.0 scale. Nick Cookingham has 612 assists, 50 blocks and 156 digs, while Buddy Martens has 58 assists, 337 digs and a 2.27 passer rating.

“I think our play at the net has improved the most this year,” said Bazon. “We have worked hard in practice on blocking technique and footwork. When we are playing our best, our blocking is on. I think this team does a nice job working with everyone’s strengths. We only have one club kid on our team and we continue to push other more experienced teams to the limit.”

Cookingham and Keefe were named to the all-WSC Gold team, while seniors Jason Beausoleil, Martens, Chase Cavanaugh, Cookingham and Keefe were named to the allWSC Gold academic team for their performances in the classroom.

“I think our season has been very successful on all levels,” said Bazon.

“Our program ended the regular season with 63 wins (between all levels).

The future of Willowbrook volleyball looks bright. At the varsity level, we are graduating seven seniors and will return seven next year. We should begin next year with varsity experience and begin to play at a high level right away. I had some great kids this year and I will miss our seniors greatly.

They were extremely coachable and I look forward to all the good things they will do in the future.”

Fenton softball team swinging the bats well Bison opened postseason play this week; Texta smashes two home runs

The Fenton softball team has seen an uptick in offense of late.

At the recent Bison Blast tournament it hosted, Fenton scored 41 runs in 17 innings of play.

“We have really seen an increase in our hitting lately,” said Fenton coach

Dave Mello. “A couple of these past games don’t really show it with the runs scored, but in our Bison Blast we scored those 41 runs in 17 innings.”

Mello noted Fenton looked particularly crisp in the tournament against quality opposition. “The Bison Blast was the best the offense has looked in years against high-quality teams,” he said. “We scored 11 runs in one inning against Lane Tech and then hit six home runs on Saturday (of the tournament). It was a lot of fun to watch.”

Fenton went into this week’s playoffs with a 14-21 overall mark. In recent games, Fenton lost to Lane Tech

13-12, defeated Elgin St. Edward 1211. Lost to Chicago Taft 20-17, lost to Montini 15-2, lost to Elmwood Park 7-5 and lost to Loyola Academy 12-1.

Rose Riley is leading the team in batting average at .492 and also onbase percentage at .560.

Isa Lozada leads the team in hits with 44 and doubles with nine. Riley leads the way in triples with seven.

Lozada is the team leader in home runs (5), RBI (29), runs scored (47) and stolen bases (21).

In the pitching circle, Gianna Mendoza is tops in wins with four. Ashley Mitchell has a team-high two saves

and is the team leader with 47 strikeouts.

Mello said Fenton must work to cut down its miscues in the field. “We have been making too many errors recently,” he said. “Our fielding percentage went from .922 to .906 in the last five games. We can still get better at everything. We really need to step up everything with regionals beginning (this week). Once that game starts, there is no tomorrow for fixing things.”

Alyssa Texta and Payton Pugliese were cited for strong recent play, particularly at the plate. “Alyssa has

really been swinging a hot bat lately,” said Mello. “She has raised her average about 100 points and has hit two massive home runs. Payton has really assumed a leadership role both with her play and with her mouth. She has been on a hitting tear and also has been making great plays in the field.

She also launched a long home run in the Bison Blast.”

Fenton opened Class 4A regional action earlier this week against Chicago Whitney Young at Evanston. If Fenton won that game it will play for the regional title Saturday at Evanston High School.

IC Catholic Prep softball team wins regional title Knights 24-5 on the season; Freshman Cash improves to 11-1

The IC Catholic Prep softball team made quick work of a pair of playoff foes and walked away with a regional title.

The Knights downed both Timothy Christian and DePaul College Prep to win their own Class 2A IC Catholic Prep regional title at Plunkett Park. The Knights have won five regional titles in a row and are look-

ing for their third sectional title now in the last four seasons.

In a 15-1 win over Timothy Christian in the semifinals, the Knights had 14 hits. IC Catholic Prep scored five runs in the first inning, seven in the second inning and three in the third inning.

Alessandra Eccardt had a double, while Emma Lytton and Nicolette Pochop homered. Pochop was the winning pitcher and moved to 1-1.

The Knights then downed DePaul College Prep 15-1 for the regional title. The Knights had 15 hits and used a nine-run fourth inning to pull away.

Rebecca Cash was the winning

pitcher. She improved to 11-1. Dani Murillo had two doubles, while Josie Lytton, Natalie Murillo and Cash each had a double. Josie Lytton hit two triples.

The two wins put IC Catholic Prep at 24-5 heading into this week’s Class 2A sectional.

“We’ve been hitting well,” said IC Catholic Prep coach Frank Reaber. “Everybody in the lineup has been hitting the ball well. Dani Murillo and Josie are hitting the cover off the ball. Josie was a foot away from putting the ball over the fence.

Overall, we’re playing well, but it’s a long grind.”

What Memorial Day means to me: My name is Robert Fonzino, and I served in the United States Army from 1966 to 1969. My focus on this, and every Memorial Day derives from my tour of duty in the Central Highlands of Viet Nam from July 1968 to June 1969. During that time I served as 1st platoon leader, B Company, 4th Infantry Division, 2/8 Mechanized Infantry.

For me, Memorial Day is not to honor all veterans. It is a day of reflection. A day to honor and remember those who gave their lives while serving in the armed forces of the United States of America during wartime. They are a group of special people, who answered when our country called.

During the year I served in Viet Nam, nearly 14,000 men and women lost their lives. Those people are not just numbers. They are all sons and daughters. Some, husbands and wives. Some, brothers and sisters. Some, fathers and mothers. Some, uncles and aunts. Some, friends or acquaintances. Some, classmates and neighbors.

Some of those men who died, I knew well. They were my

friends, most very close friends. I remember them as people who were part of my life, even for just a short, important time. I remember their pranks. I remember their smiles. I remember their tears. I remember their pain. I remember their anger. I remember their heartache. I remember the first day they arrived to my unit. I remember their reactions to combat. I remember their valor. I remember the last moments of their lives. I remember writing to their loved ones back home and sharing their families’ pain along with my own.

For me, that is what I remember. I suppose it is the burden of survival I live with.

As generations pass, the memory of those individuals who died will fade, and they will become just numbers, or names on a wall -- all casualties of a tumultuous time of our history. That is why it is so important to remember them now as the people they were -- as the people who touched our lives in some small or grand way.

Perhaps this Memorial Day we can all take a few moments to remember one, or two, or many of these souls that we knew. Give them a few thoughts on this special day, dedicated to them.
