ELITE Jerrion Ealy | RB | Jackson Prep Ealy is a three-year starter that has both produced big-time numbers and been part of big-time team success with three state titles. His speed, agility and developing strength make him one of the state’s best all-around offensive playmakers. He is the first player from Jackson Prep to make the El10. Diwun Black | ATH | Forest With a rare combination of size and speed, Black has separated himself from many of his peers over the past three seasons. He led the state with 12 interceptions as a sophomore in 2016, but has also produced big tackle numbers. He is the first Forest Bearcat to make the E10. Dannis Jackson | ATH | Sumrall Very few receivers can speed up and down the sideline or snag the ball out of the air at its highest point like Jackson. That has helped him haul in over 60 passes, 1,100 yards and double-digit touchdowns in each of the last two seasons. He is the first player from Sumrall to be named to the E10. Brandon Turnage | ATH | Lafayette As a sophomore in 2016 Turnage tuned in a team-high 7 interceptions, while also averaging over 17 yards per catch on offense en route to his team winning the 4A crown. His athleticism, fluidity and ball skills allowed him to stand out with the ball or in pursuit of it. He becomes the second Lafayette Commodore to make the E10, joining Eli johnson, who made the 2015 E10 class. KJ Jefferson | QB | North Panola Since his freshman season Jefferson has shown the athleticism and arm strength to be special at the quarterback position. All he’s done since then is develop into one of the state’s most prolific players at the position, having thrown for more than 3,000 yards and 30 TDs, while rushing for more than 1,300 yards plus eight scores as a junior last season. He is the first North Panola Cougar to make the E10.

Dreke Clark | RB | Starkville With Chris Jones’s new offense in place last fall Clark was able to turn in the most rushing yards in all of 6A football. His ability to punish defenses with his speed and physicality was a big factor in the Yellowjackets pushing their way to the 6A title game last December. Clark is the fourth Starkville player to make the E10, joining Brady Davis(2014), AJ Brown(2015) and Willie Gay(2016). Nakobe Dean | LB | Horn Lake Dean is the perfect new-age linebacker, as he posses the physical prowess to play the position but the speed and athleticism to pursue the ball against modern, spreadout offenses. He has been at the center of a defensive awakening for the Horn Lake program in recent years. He is the first Horn Lake Eagle to make the E10. Kyziah Pruitt | ATH | Noxubee County Pruitt has played on two-state championship teams, in 2015 and 2017, at Noxubee County, while contributing from multiple spots on the offensive and defensive side of the ball. However, his home has been receiver where he’s grabbed 153 passes for 2,478 yards and 27 touchdowns over the last two seasons. Pruitt is the second Noxubee County Tiger to make the E10, after Jeffery Simmons was included in 2015. John Rhys Plumee | QB | Oak Grove Few players have the ability to affect their team’s offensive performance more than John Rhys Plumlee. But for his team, its a relief knowing he will touch the ball on every snap, as he has the ability to make just about any play on the field with either his arm or his legs - as evidence by his 262 total yards per game output in 2017. He becomes the second Oak Grove Warrior to make the E10, after Jordan Duncan did so in 2015. Louis Paul Smith | OL | D’Iberville A three-year starter at center, Smith has been integral to the running game that has barreled his team into the playoffs three straight seasons. His leadership has also proven instrumental as the team has taken on his personality. Smith is the first D’Iberville Warrior to make the E10.

New head coach Eric Rice inherits returning experience at quarterback, as well as in the defensive secondary and on the defensive line. The key will be how players buy in to the new things Rice brings.

Though the offense will have to improve and retool, the Jags could be good defensively in 2018 with linebacker Kylan Robinson taking the lead. He finished with 98 stops in 2017.

The Eagles will be loaded again in the offensive backfield with QB Raydar Jones and RB Tyler Grim returning. On defense, blue chip LB Nakobe Dean returns after collecting 147 total tackles in 2017, as does DL Omar Pew.

Coach Chris Cutcliffe has the talent coming back on offense to have a solid unit there. However, on defense he has to replace a couple of studs in linebacker Quentin Wilfawn(2017 Elite 10) and defensive back CJ Terrell.

Replacing Patrick Shegog(2017 Elite 10) at quarterback will inevitably change how the offense looks in 2018. But there’s a feeling around the USP program that a wave of young, talented players are set to emerge this fall.

The Chargers will be looking to build on the 4-3 division run that led to a playoff birth last fall in 2018. Last season their only division losses came at the hands of Tupelo, South Panola and Horn Lake. Clipping one of those guys, plus consistency, should be the focus this season.

On offense Tupelo has stars returning in QB Stephon McGlaun, RB Jaquerrious Williams and WR Jordan Jernigan. A couple of stars on the defensive side won’t be on the field this year, however, in Jett Johnson(graduation), Peter Gray(graduation) and Tay Standifer(injury). But Trent Hammond is a mastermind and feels his unit could be faster this season.

The Arrows return their top rusher, two top receivers and star QB Hunter Hulsey this fall. It would be foolish to count Clinton out in region 2 this season, despite a disappointing 5-6 finish in 2017.

Last season was about laying the foundation for a turnaround for Sherod Gideon, but he did have the passing game ahead of schedule. In the spring game the Hornets’ passing attack looked even better against 4A contender Louisville, perhaps foreshadowing improvement on the field in 2018.

Since Anthony Hart was hired in 2016, the Jags have developed a reputation as one of the state’s strongest programs on the defensive side of the ball. They’ve crept closer and closer to playing for 6A title again, and rising junior QB Jimmy “The Jet” Holliday appears to have what it takes to help them get there.

With improvement on defense this fall under head coach Damien Gary, the Mustangs should be more competitive in one of the state’s most difficult regions.

Northwest Rankin will again be one of the state’s most talented teams in 2018. It starts with two-way star Jarrian Jones. But the return of Jamari Jones at QB is a key, considering some of the returning offensive skill weapons he’ll have at his disposal.

New offensive coordinator Shay Hodge has returning quarterback Patrick Johnson, plus plenty of rushing production, to build a solid base to score. On defense, DeMonte Russell getting to the quarterback could solve a lot of problems for the Rams.

Chris Jones brought plenty of offense with him to Starkville in year one. This season the Jackets will be even more balanced and dangerous on that side. On defense, they’re still just as nasty and physical, as usual. The Jackets are one of the clear 6A favorites.

Josh Morgan has led the Vikings to eight wins or more five straight seasons, including back-to-back 10-win seasons in 2015 and 2016. Their consistency has been impressive during that stretch, and if it’s taught us anything, that’s to bet on the WC running game and defense.

Pearl enters 2018 with the longest active winning streak in all of 6A, after dominating their competition and finishing undefeated last fall. Many of their playmakers from last year are gone, but the personality of coach Perry’s program ensures they will be tough to deal with.

If the Panthers’ consistency under Marcus Broyles has taught us anything it’s to expect the program to be resilient when stars move on. Anthony Alford, Stephon Huderson, Nataurean Watts and others have made their mark. Now the Panthers reload.

All three wins for the Indians last season came against division foes. Under first-year head coach Katlan French they will need to better that mark to crack the playoffs.

With plenty of productive rushers returnings, and Louis Paul Smith anchoring the offensive line, Eric Collins will again hope to pave the way for the Warriors to the playoffs. D’Iberville is seeking a ninth consecutive playoff appearance in 2018.

John Archie has returned to lead the Admirals, after serving as defensive coordinator in his previous sting at Gulfport. TQ Newsome is a good piece to build the offense around, while Derek Hall and the defense should again be a physical bunch.

With an offensive trio like QB Caleb Garcia, RB Blake Comeaux and WR Brooks Rayburn returning, the Hawks are looking to build on their 10 wins from last season. The defense will have to replace some productive pieces, but Trenton Ladner who made 176 tackles in 2017 - returns to lead that side of the ball.

So much rushing production is gone from last season with Keon Moore gone. They will count on Robert West and Ricky Willis to continue the success with the ground game. That, combined with defensive improvement, could make the Red Rebels contenders in 2018.

Malcolm Magee is gone, but there’s reason for optimism for the Greyhounds in 2018. First off, QB Blake Noblin is back after showing flashes last season. Plus, Khalil Levy and Darien Wallace can take over on either side of the ball.

The Gators are looking to make their 4th straight playoff appearance and 5th in school history. For that to happen, they will need to have a outstanding senior season from Jalen Jordan, who totaled 1,687 all-purpose yards and 141 tackles defensively. Their top signal caller, Ben Rohrbacher, returns after a 1,700 passing yard season a year ago.

Junior standout and Fortius Project Stronger Award winner, Cameron Threatt, has the potential to be a force on the defensive side of the ball.

This year, Olive Branch should be a target after one of the state’s biggest turnarounds in recent memory. They return some talent in the form of Cameron Mosley, E.J. Davis, and Cole Catledge on offense. The defense will be without Fabian Lovett and Jaylon Reed, but Kado Carr, Jevon Banks, and Caden Burse will look to carry over their leadership to this year’s core.

The Bulldogs need to replace a lot of last year’s production if they are to make it to postseason football for the first time since 2015. Javontae Davis has a chance to step up after a 293 yard rushing season. The strength of this defense can be found in the defensive line with Fred Givens and Jontavious Thomas there.

The Jags have talent coming back, but they need it to show on the field to play ball after the regular season. Dual-threat, Alijah Martin, is back to lead offensively after throwing for 1,594 yards and rushing for 735. They lost a lot of defensive production, but Jace McCoy and Cody Scott are back to anchor the Jags on D.

South Jones has a good group of talent returning from a team that ended a seven-year playoff drought in 2017. John Mitchell is a promising QB that returns after an 1,824 yard, 23 TD passing campaign and is also a threat on the ground with 866 yards rushing and 13 TDs. The front seven should be solid with Vekelion Campbell and Andrew Howard back.

New Albany is going to change it up a bit this season, after an offseason of change. The Bulldogs are set to go to the air more this season with QB Loden Bolen back along with plenty of athletic skill position players. First-year head coach Cody Stubblefield is back to start his HC career, where he started his coaching career in 2009.

The Tigers have some talented players returning on both sides of the ball, but their season will depend largely on how their playmaking QB Trey Blanchard performs. He can do it with his arm and his legs, but more consistency through the air could ascend him to a new level.

Considering Caledonia had a revolving door at head coach this offseason, there is a quiet confidence around the program that improvement is on the horizon. Michael Kelly is the new HC, and he will be working with a young, but promising, group this season.

The talent is there for the Red Raiders to step up and claim the division crown. That’s the case each season. One feather in their cap going into 2018, however, is Jordan Gilleylen’s experience behind center. That to go along with offensive playmakers Thailon Whitfield and Erick Rogers.

The Whippets will rely on mostly younger playmakers in key roles this season. That includes Azikwe Mays at QB, Devonte Ellis on the defensive side and Antonio Harmon on both sides. They are a team that could surprise in a strong division.

With a mean duo returning on the defensive side of the ball in Jay Nash and Antavious Collins, that side of the ball should be stout. The Gators will need to have playmakers emerge on the offensive side of the ball to make noise in this difficult division.

Their offense should be significantly better with Will Ray returning in the ground game after rushing for 1,206 yards last season. They lost a lot of senior leadership on defense, so Jacob Smith is expected to rise up and be a leader.

Belmont will have to replicate last season’s success on the ground if they are to remain in the region hunt. The good news is that Parker Bolton is back to run the ball after nearly getting 1.000 last season. Jared Rodriguez is back to do more damage defensively from his middle linebacker position.

Dallas Gamble is needed once again to deliver for the Blue Devils. Gamble rushed for 1,242 yards and threw for 747. Most of last season’s production on defense is back, players like Austin Williams, Amani Grizzard, and Terrence Bell.

For the Aggies, they will need Matthew Bobo to replicate last season’s success and add a little more to put them on top of the region. Bobo tallied 22 total TDs as a dual-threat at QB and added four picks on defense. They will have to replace a solid group of player defensively, however, Blain Suitor is back to give them a playmaker in the secondary.

Mantachie is looking to improve after struggling last season. To do that, they are going to have to find a way to replace a guy like Seth Johnson. They have Tyler Vancover who could make a big impact as a true freshman on both sides of the ball, as well as Clay Franks.

The Vikings still have the firepower needed to repeat as region champs if they can replace one of the state’s top signal callers in Clark Mills. Sophomore Bo Howell is a candidate to replace Mills, but he will have Hunter West in the backfield with him to relieve the pressure. Corley Hopper and sophomore standout Hunter Miles will both be fun to watch on defense after racking up a combined 315 tackles.

The Tigers are looking to get out of the region cellar with a blend of experaince and inexperience. Willie Eagins is likely the guy to lead the way offensively as well as Malik Burnett. Last season’s leading tackler and upcoming sophomore Jeremiah Brassell Jr. will need to be productive again at linebacker.

The pieces are there for the Hawks to climb in the region standings. Dylan King is expected to be productive once again as a sophomore and Joshua Kimble should give them a reliable ground attack after almost cracking the 1,000-yard rushing mark. Ahmed Alhalemi is back to lead the defense at linebacker after getting 106 tackles in 2017.

Javion McKinney had an outstanding freshman campaign a year ago and will look to add to those numbers this season at linebacker.

After their best season in school history and with Elite 10 member, K.J. Jefferson, the Cougars are once again in the 3A title conversation. Jefferson passed for 3,028 yards and rushed for 1,325 yards, 44 TDs in all. Tyler Shorter is one of the main guys to watch on defense after picking off nine passes in the secondary.

If the Panthers can replace a dynamic playmaker in Kenneth Gainwell and have young offensive players step up, they can be dangerous yet again. Kory Gainwell returns to aid their rushing attack after getting 239 yards a year ago. The defense could be their biggest strength this season with Ben Luckett, Kenderian Dixon, and Tredarius Carr leading the way.

The Tigers are looking to have the success they had in the middle of last season, but do it throughout the entire 2018 campaign. They can improve in win total if the offense can stay consistent. The defense needs to do the same.

Teddy Dyess arrives after a phenomenal tenure at Philadelphia and inherits a program that has the potential to win the region. If Chandler Pittman can mirror the success he had as a freshman last year, look out. Pittman accounted for 2,308 yards last season at QB and has three years to improve on those numbers.

Antavious Willis will have to come up big on offense again if Velma Jackson wants to repeat as region champs. Willis has some help with Santavis Vaughan in the backfield with him. Abraim Rankin returns to anchor the defense on the defensive line.

From having a dominating team in the 90s and early 2000s, Bruce has reached a time of rebuilding. The Trojans squeaked into the playoffs in 2016 but failed to reach the postseason in Faust’s first year as head coach. Much of the talent on Bruce’s roster is in the form of underclassmen, but after gaining valuable experience last season, these players could be dangerous in 2018.

Although the Eagles have made the postseason each of the last 18 years, they have only won two state championships in that span (2007, 2011). The Eagles finished at an even 6-6-1 last season and were eliminated in the second round of the playoffs and will look to build off of that finish this season.

The Tigers return quarterback Trevion Hillie who passed for over 1,000 yards a season ago. Philadelphia joined 2A last season after being a talented 3A team in recent years. The Tornadoes fell just shy of a region title and went to the wire in the postseason in a game they eventually lost to Calhoun City. Philly lost a lot of talent to graduation a season ago, but has the tendency to reload rather than rebuild and should be a threat in 2A again this season.

Scott Central beat out Philadelphia and Lake for the region crown by way of a tiebreaker last season and lost to Winona after a deep postseason run. The Rebels graduated starting quarterback T.J. Wash, who threw for and rushed for over 1,000 yards, last year, so someone will have to fill the signal-caller’s shoes if the Rebels are to make another deep push in the playoffs.

Pelahatchie returns quarterback Javeious Purvis who threw for over 1,500 yards a season ago, so there will be some experience at signal caller coming into 2018 for the Chiefs.

The Dragons have been a run-heavy offense in recent memory, and that was aided by the presence of Don Ragsdale in the backfield who rushed for over 3,000 yards last season. Ragsdale is now gone, so a new set of tailbacks will have to carry the load in 2018. The Dragons also return quarterback Zane Cothern who threw for over 1,000 yards last year.

The road does not get any easier for the Blue Devils in 2018 as they still have to deal with 1A powerhouses.

Last season was one of the most successful years in Biggersville history as the Lions made the postseason for the first time in two decades. Although they were eliminated in the first round by Ray Brooks, Biggersville achieved a major milestone last season, and with the help of senior Quamon Davis could make another playoff run in 2018.

The Eagles narrowly missed the playoffs last year for the first time since 2010, but still experienced some success on the gridiron. Falkner graduated 12 seniors a season ago, including quarterback Autry Windham and running back Alex Caldwell, so there will be some holes for them to fill in 2018 if they hope to reach the postseason in a tough Region 1-1A.

The Lions of Byers graduated numerous defenders and a starting quarterback off of last season’s team. One bright spot that remains, however, is junior running back Julian Moore who rushed for nearly 1,000 yards a season ago. Moore has a chance to get over the 1,000-yard mark this season, and will likely carry a large portion of the offensive load for Byers this season.

Okolona enjoyed their first season in 1A football as they did not lose to a 1A school until their north half match against Simmons. The Chieftains dominated their region opponents, and with a 1,000-yard rusher returning in Jacorrius Standfield, could be poised to do it again. Okolona has their sights set on the state championship in 2018 and has the tools to make it happen.

Last season marked the Cardinals’ first in the 1A classification, but they failed to make the playoffs. Potts Camp has not reached the postseason in its five playoff-eligible seasons and has struggled to put together consistent seasons since they left the Independents classification in 2013. The Cardinals have a steep road to climb this season if they hope to reach the playoffs for the first time in school history.

Last season, Smithville’s only loss in region play came against Okolona who won the title.

The Rebels failed to recover from a bumpy start to the season and missed the playoffs for the 25th-straight year. Despite this postseason drought, Thrasher has some dangerous playmakers, including rising-senior utility man Shawn Dalton Weatherbee. Weatherbee has had a prolific career as a Rebel, and will be needed this season if Thrasher wants to compete in November.

French Camp finished a respectable second in Region 3-1A a season ago and returns their leading passer and four leading rushers from 2017. The Panthers only graduated six seniors last season, so the cupboard should be full of talent heading into the fall.

The Gators were a part of a three-way tie for the four seed in Region 3-1A last season with Vardaman and Hamilton, with Vardaman winning the tiebreaker and advancing to the postseason. Leake County is a run-based offense with young, promising talent on their roster. As that talent matures, the Gators will most likely stay in the playoff hunt.

Stringer secured the 2 seed from their region last year and were eliminated by Nanih Waiya in the playoffs. In order to keep this trend of success, the Red Devils will have to replace 11 seniors from a season ago.

The Rebels could be dangerous in the air in 2018 with A.J. Brown, D.K. Metcalf, and Demarkus Lodge returning at receiver. Jordan Ta’amu returns as signal caller after passing for 1,682 yards in five game last season. If the defense can improve in stopping the run game, then Ole Miss could improve in a tough SEC West division.

Despite Joe Moorhead entering his first season as a head coach in the SEC, the Bulldogs will have lofty expectations. With so many studs returning to the front seven on defense, and apparent depth in the secondary, the sky is the limit for that side of the ball. Offensively the question will be how the talented returning pieces(Nick Fitzgerald, Aeris Williams and Kylin Hill), and young receviers, plug into Moorhead’s system.

With a bevy of talented options to use at QB, and a favorable schedule, Jay Hopson has the Eagles primed for another championship season. The schedule also presents a mighty juicy opportunity for a signature win on the road against Auburn.

The Tigers are looking to improve on an offense that struggled in 2017. They do return the bulk of their offensive production this season, including quarterback Brent Lyles and home city running back Jordan Johnson. On the flip side, the defense lost a lot of talent, but Charles Anderson returns to anchor the defensive line.

Fred McNair’s Braves were successful in 2017 but fell to former-Ole Miss quarterback DeVante Kincade and Grambling State in the SWAC Championship. Alcorn State returns their second-leading rusher and passer from a season ago in P.J. Simmons and Noah Johnson and returns the bulk of their defensive production as well. The Braves open the season at Georgia Tech, which they also did in 2015 as they fell to the Yellow Jackets 69-6.

The Delta Devils’ 2017 campaign did not go according to plan, as they were outscored by their opponents 445-164 and accumulated -103 rushing yards. Valley does, however, return all three quarterbacks who took snaps for them last season, including freshmen Dewayne Betts and Christopher Fowler. Both of these signal callers, along with rising-senior Jett Even, gained experience last season that could prove valuable in 2018.

The Statesmen lost leading rusher Chris Robinson to graduation last season but return quarterback Breck Ruddick who was last season’s leading passer. They also added depth at signal-caller this offseason with the signing of South Panola-product Patrick Shegog. The Statesmen look to gain their first national title since 2004 and their first Gulf South title since 2014.

The Choctaws injected a surge of talented players into the program with their signing class this past February. Detric Hawthorne was a dynamic playmaker in the MACJC last season, while fellow MACJC standouts Kenzie Phillips and Ja’Mori Mark should shine at running back. The Rotenberry twins - Cole and Turner - should also help aid in a potential turnaround for the Choctaw in 2018.

The Eagles narrowly missed out on winning the South division in 2017. With plenty of talent returning, especially at the skill spots, they will again fight for that top spot this season. They have two viable options at QB, but finding the one, could be the biggest key for their title chances.

The JCJC program continues to build a reputation as one of the best-recruiting programs in the MACJC. In 2018 they return enough talent at the skill positions to cover the loss of start tailback Scottie Phillips. The secondary is loaded with future SEC talent.

East Mississippi and Northwest have swapped national title bids in recent years, last year being the Lions’ turn at the crown. East won the national championship and looks to build off that momentum heading into 2018. They will be assisted by rising-sophomore quarterback Lindsey Scott Jr. who threw for over 3,000 yards last year.

Although the Bulldogs’ leading rusher, Cameryn Brent, exhausted his eligibility last season, quarterback Jesse Wilson was the second-leading rusher in 2017, so Holmes’ offense should be in good hands. The Holmes defense also made good work of pressuring quarterbacks a season ago. If some of the younger talent can build off of last year’s 6-3 finish, Holmes could have another strong year.

Dan Ellington is no longer at ICC, and he leaves some big shoes to fill. Either Spencer Unruh or Clark Mills will earn the starting role for the Indians, and while both are capable quarterbacks, time will tell if they are able to successfully replace Ellington. If one of them can and if the Indians’ defense can be a little sharper, ICC could compete for a playoff spot in 2018.

Times are lean in Moorhead. The Trojans went winless last season and 1-8 in 2016 thanks to a forfeit from Copiah-Lincoln. The Trojans have some talent on their roster, but will need consistent performances this season if they hope to snap their losing streak.

Last season was rough for the Tigers, garnering only three wins in nine tries. After losing starting quarterback Desmond Hunter, the ball will likely be handed to Zac Oden or TCPS-product Caleb Kitchens. One of these young signal callers will have to have a strong season if the Tigers want to improve off of last year.

The Rangers lost quarterback Jack Abraham via a transfer to Southern Miss, so the signal-calling duties will be passed down to either rising-sophomore Robert Wilcke or Urriah Shephard, a signee from Houston High School. The Rangers have advanced to the state title game last season, falling in heartbreaking fashion to East Mississippi 67-66 in two overtimes.
