As both the Cliffs Pavilion and the Palace Theatre resume a busy schedule of shows we’re also delighted to be able to once again offer a full programme of activities aimed at children and families. Read on for further details of just some of the things on offer…

STORYTELLING

CLIFFS PAVILION OUTER FOYER 10-30AM – 11.30AM SATURDAYS 23 OCTOBER, 20 NOVEMBER, 4 DECEMBER Join us once a month for storytelling at the Cliffs Pavilion with our storyteller, Hannah. Our stories are suitable for pre-school children upwards, together with their families, and will cover all topics, including some of the children’s shows we have coming up at the theatres. Parents/carers must stay with their children at all times. TICKETS £2.00 per child. No need to book.

PALACE PARENT & TODDLER DRAMA GROUP PALACE THEATRE 1.30PM – 2.30PM RE-COMMENCES MON 4 OCT We currently have spaces in our Parent and Toddler group! Our Parent & Toddler drama classes at the Palace Theatre meet every Monday during term time. The class is suitable for children aged 2½ to 4 years old and is a great way for young people to explore their imaginations through song, music, movement and storytelling. PALACE THEATRE FRI 15 & SAT 16 OCTOBER Touching, funny and utterly original, Freckle Productions’ delightful adaptation of Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s Stick Man is back in town!

What starts off as a morning jog becomes quite the misadventure for Stick Man: a dog wants to play fetch with him, a swan builds a nest with him, and he even ends up on a fire! How will Stick Man ever get back to the family tree? This award-winning production, from the team behind Zog, Tiddler and other Terrific Tales, and Tabby McTat features a trio of top actors and is packed full of puppetry, songs, live music and funky moves.

CLIFFS PAVILION MON 13 DECEMBER 2021 – SUN 2 JANUARY 2022 You shall go to the ball this Christmas as Cinderella transforms from rags to riches, outwits her very Ugly Sisters, and with the help of her hilarious friend and one very magical Fairy Godmother, wins the heart of the dashing Prince Charming. Brian Conley, the King of Panto, will play Cinderella’s best friend Buttons which will see him return to pantomime in Southend having last appeared at the Cliffs Pavilion in Robinson Crusoe in 2016 in a show which beat all Box Office records.

Panto audiences will be in for a treat as Brian and our fantastic cast will bring comedy, stunning vocals and plenty of surprises to a production packed full of music, dance, laughter and audience participation. The clock is ticking, so book your tickets now!

SUN 21 NOVEMBER The Very Hungry Caterpillar, by author/illustrator Eric Carle has delighted generations of readers since it was first published in 1969 selling more than 43 million copies worldwide.

Eric’s well-known books captivated readers with his iconic colourful hand-painted tissue paper collage illustrations and distinctively simple stories, introducing generations of children to a bigger, brighter world – and to their first experience of reading itself. The timeless classic has made its way off the page and onto the stage.

Created by Jonathan Rockefeller, the critically acclaimed production of The Very Hungry Caterpillar Show features a menagerie of 75 lovable puppets, faithfully adapting four of Eric Carle’s stories, Brown Bear, Brown Bear, 10 Little Rubber Ducks, The Very Lonely Firefly and of course, the star of the show The Very Hungry Caterpillar who celebrated its 50th Birthday in 2019.

PALACE THEATRE SAT 18 – FRI 24 DECEMBER From the author of the well-loved children’s book Dear Zoo, Rod Campbell.

Santa is determined to deliver the Christmas present to our little hero Sarah. But he doesn’t get it right straight away! With the help of his cheeky Elf, he finally settles on something ‘perfect’, just in time for Christmas Eve. All the ingredients of Rod Campbell’s ingeniously simple and charming style are brought to life on stage, plus a whole lot more… with music, laughter and plenty of audience participation. Plus, the opportunity to meet Santa himself and after the show and receive a gift! A perfect introduction to theatre for those aged 2 to 7 years old, Dear Santa is a Christmas present children and parents alike will never forget.

MARITIME ROOM TUE 21 DECEMBER A perfect storytelling family afternoon to bring all the generations together for Christmas, taking your imagination on a journey through five well-known Christmas tales suitable for audiences of young and old alike.

FESTIVE TALES CHRISTMAS AFTERNOON TEA

The enchantment begins at 12noon

For young people with a diagnosis of highfunctioning autism, Asperger’s or Downs GROUP 1 (11 - 16 year olds) meets on a Wednesday from 5.30pm – 6.30pm

GROUP 2 (16 - 25 year olds) meets on a Wednesday from 6.30pm – 7.30pm

At Southend Theatres we have six Youth Theatre Groups including a specialist SEN group called Total Palace for young people and adults with a diagnosis of high functioning Autism, Asperger’s syndrome or Downs Syndrome. Total Palace has two classes, group 1 is for 11-16 year olds and group 2 is for 16-25 year olds.
