Legion gives to food bank In the spirit of Christmas, Brian Elsey (left) and Harry Ratchford (right) of the Tsawwassen Legion present a cheque for $600 to Kent Nickerson (centre) of the South Delta Food Bank. The food bank is located behind Ladner Christian Fellowship at 5545 Ladner Trunk Road and provides assistance to people who live in South Delta and show evidence of low income. Donations of non-perishable food items may be dropped off directly to the food bank on Monday and Wednesday mornings, or via the church office Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Cheques or cash may also be dropped off at the church office.

hen was the last time you hugged a Christmas tree— lights and all? Some volunteers at the Delta Hospital Auxiliary Christmas Thrift Store certainly did recently when a delivery of 40 of them arrived at the Ladner Harbour Centre location on Elliott Street which is open just through the holidays. The trees were a donation from Lansdowne Centre where they had been used in the Richmond mall's seasonal displays last year. "We chose to donate our trees to the thrift shop because though we didn’t need them anymore in the mall, we knew they would be used and enjoyed for many years to come in family homes," said Bronwyn Bailey, Marketing Director for Lansdowne Centre. "The Delta Hospital Auxiliary is a wonderful organization working toward a worthwhile cause and directly impacting the community. As a community shopping centre, it’s very important to us to give back to our local communities in every way

we can." The trees were sold, depending on size (from three and a half to seven feet tall), for $12 to $60. Carol Burgoyne, thrift store coordinator, said it took a matter of a few days for the trees to be nearly sold out. "And they all came with lights and stands," she said, adding Lansdowne Centre was very generous to donate the

trees. "We really appreciate it because we ran out of all our trees at the store," she said. "We had a lot, but sold them all and so it really helped us." When she heard that 40 trees were being sent, Burgoyne was unfazed. "First thing I said was we're going to

Generous response Staff from Muscle Memory in Tsawwassen had a pretty crowded studio last week after customers answered the call to donate gifts that will be distributed by Deltassist this Christmas. nal event of the birth of Jesus Christ. In the birth of his son, God has given the greatest gift and displayed true generosity. The fall-off-yourseat astonishment of Christmas is that God gave the gift of his son, not to those who were faithful, deserving and good, but to his enemies. he astonishment of true generosity. We all know the feeling. A couple days before Christmas, a neighbour or work colleague gives you a Christmas card or gift. The only problem? They weren’t on your list. You have nothing for them. Now you have to scramble to return the favour, all while making it look like you had planned this all along. The fact is, most of our giving is transactional in nature. We give to those who give to us. We give to those who deserve it, who have earned it all year. Very often, our giving is more akin to trading than actual generosity. And much to the joy of retailers, we’ve come to believe that all this gift giving (and receiving) will produce greater happiness. In this frenzied, cluttered season, when we dig past Frosty and Santa and the unrelenting advertisements proclaiming life is empty without an iPad, we  nally make our way to the origi-
