OFFICIAL PROGRAM & GUIDE

Triple Crown Summer The 12th Annual West 18th Street Fashion Show

Designers in Order of Presentation TARA KLOEPPEL

Location: Kansas City, MO Age: 24 Collection: Tara’s interpretation of Triple Crown Summer is ultra feminine, super floral, and a little bit country. Expect to see custom-made prints, embroidery and pompoms throughout. www.tarakloeppel.com

KATRINA WEISS

Location: Lawrence, KS Age: 26 Collection: Expect to see men’s suiting and jockey wear take a feminine form. By taking the clean lines from men’s garments and re-contextualizing them for a woman’s body, her designs aim to further close the gap in genderspecific active wear. kmlweiss@gmail.com

SPOOL

(Amy Hastings and Kelly Allen) Age: Amy 30, Kelly 28 Location: Spool, 122 W. 18th St. Kansas City, MO Collection: Featuring original designs by Beth Guinta, Joanna Swieten and Amy Hastings, this collection is inspired by white lace, eyelets, drop waists and sweaty glasses of lemonade. spoolkc@gmail.com

HILARY BROWN

Location: Kansas City, MO Age: 29 Collection: The colors of a mint julep inspire this collection. Minty greens, sugary whites and pops of bourbon orange will mix to create a swimwear version of race-day style. hilarybrown1@gmail.com

WHITNEY MATALONE

Location: Lawrence, KS Age: 23 Collection: Inspired by the brightly colored geometric uniforms of the jockeys, Matalone intends to push the boundaries of what could be worn to a horse race. matalone@ku.edu

METHOD.

(Shomari Benton and David Lloyd) Location: 1817 Wyandotte, Kansas City, MO Age: Shomari 33 Collection: Fifteen of the first 28 Kentucky Derby races were won by African-American jockeys, but after the turn of the 20th century, African-American jockeys were pushed out of horse racing and had to focus on other sports that offered them opportunities such as Negro Leagues Baseball. Inspired by these athletes, Method will present a link between the African-American jockeys of the early 1900s, and the Negro League Baseball players of the 1920s. www.methodkc.com

YULIE URANO & CHRISTINA ASAKO DOUGHERTY

Location: Overland Park, KS (Urano) and Chicago, IL (Dougherty) Age: Yulie 24, Christina 23 Collection: This design duo is presenting a non-traditional, ready-to-wear collection that is sculptural and intuitive. This collection envisions the jockey and the horse as one creature, bringing the theme to life with specific details such as horse musculature, jockey hats, braids, uniform symbols, and blinkers. www.yulieurano.com doughertyac@gmail.com

MICHELLE SCHMIDLKOFER

Location: Kansas City, MO Age: 20 Collection: Known as the fastest two minutes in sports, the Triple Crown races feature jockeys in brightly colored jerseys zipping down the track. Schmidlkofer aims to dress her models in looks that channel the most important element of the Triple Crown races: speed. mschmidlkofer@kcai.edu

MARIA CREYTS

Location: Kansas City, MO Collection: Inspired by recent travels to Nigeria, Creyts presents us with a West African angle on Triple Crown Summer. Parallels will include fantastic headgear, the investigation of seersucker as fabric for men’s attire with a West African cut, and historic designs that depict royalty. www.mariaurora.net

OFFICIAL PROGRAM & GUIDE

Triple Crown Summer

The 12th Annual West 18th Street Fashion Show

CHRISTINA DARQUE

Location: Tulsa, OK Collection: The colorful patterned silks of the jockey’s uniform provide inspiration for Darque’s designs. Horse bridles, buckles and straps, as well as plaid horse blankets have also contributed to her vision. houseofdarqueness@gmail.com

DOMINIQUE KARWOSKI

Location: New Orleans, LA Age: 26 Collection: Karwoski’s designs feature a palette of honeydew, golden palms, key lime greens, and the flowers of Kentucky bluegrass. Refreshing moments in southern summer culture set the collection’s tone — smoothly laidback, yet winningly fast-paced. The collection is titled Midwestern Belle. blog.karwoska.com

BRITTANY M. DAVIDSON

Location: Overland Park, KS Age: 23 Collection: Over the top frills, lace and bows will come together in this feminine collection as Davidson aims to interpret the excitement of both the spectators and participants of the Triple Crown races. www.facebook.com/BMDesigns

KATIE COBLE & JENNIFER HUNT

Location: Philadelphia, PA (Hunt) and Lawrence, KS (Coble) Age: Katie 24, Jennifer 24 Collection: Hunt and Coble aim to convey the paradoxical costs of luxury through this collection. By focusing on construction and patterning to make beautiful, extravagant garments that are also grotesque in appearance and problematic for the wearer, the glamour of their designs takes on a burdensome charge. Through loaded visual means—colors that turn to mud, pelts of shedding floral —their garments will reveal the seedy corruption that can lay beneath the beautiful lives of southern aristocracy. katiemariecoble@gmail.com , jenbhunt@gmail.com

KIMBY SWEENY

Location: Shawnee, KS (originally from Hong Kong) Age: 27 Collection: Inspired by the luxurious feel of the crown, Sweeney’s collection will feature a rich color palette of red, gold, black and cream. Playing on the contrast of hard and soft, Sweeney will use brocade, taffeta and chiffon to create rigid forms and soft drapes throughout her collection. cutie_fish_b@yahoo.com.hk

ANDREA LONG & MARGIE HOGUE

Accessories Designer: Coki Bijoux Location: Kansas City, MO (Long) and Lawrence, KS (Hogue) Age: Andrea 29, Margie 30 Collection: Through their designs, Hogue and Long intend to convey a visual story of the style and culture surrounding the Triple Crown. From the flashy competitors on the track to the quietly devious former debutantes watching in the stands, they will tie an assortment of rich southern textures together with the pastel ribbons of horse racing. Collection entitled anama. www.andreamarielong.com, margiehogue@gmail.com

COKI BIJOUX

(Featured with the Andrea Long & Margie Hogue collection) Location: Kansas City, MO Collection: Among the fever and frenzy of the races is the stark white background of lattice and lace, boxwood greens and silver splashes of mint julep cups. This imagery is the inspiration for a collection of wide cuffs enameled in indulgent white gloss on sterling silver, trellis cut designs, broderie anglaise, and ample pearls with pendants in the form of imperial trellis. Rings, hatpins and horseshoe pendants complete the collection. www.cokireardon.com

LIZ PETERS

Location: Brooklyn, NY Age: 23 Collection: Peters’ collection will highlight her recent work with hat design, and showcase her love for vintage-inspired pieces. Custom hats and head pieces, 1940s silhouettes and satin prize ribbons will be featured throughout. www.ilovelizpeters.com

BIRDIES

(Peregrine Honig and Danielle Meister) Accessories Designer: Amani Skalacki Location: 116 W. 18th St. Kansas City, MO Age: Peregrine 35, Danielle 31 Collection: Focusing on the matte spring colors of Derby ribbons and 1940s linen formal wear, Birdies pairs the crisp pastel lines of Shivan and Narresh with uniquely feminine accessories by Little Lucia and “drunken bloom” bracelets by Amani Skalacki. www.birdiespanties.com

AMANI SKALACKI

(Featured with the Birdies collection) Location: Kansas City, MO Collection: As the official accessory designer to Birdies’ collection, Skalacki will be fabricating “drunken bloom” accessories and dying vintage silk flowers in wine and spirits to match the palette of each look. The designs are feminine, delicate and fun. www.skaladesigns.com J U N E 9, 2 0 1 2

OFFICIAL PROGRAM & GUIDE

Triple Crown Summer The 12th Annual West 18th Street Fashion Show

Music at the West 18th Street Fashion Show MARK SOUTHERLAND RETURNS AS MUSICAL DIRECTOR TO PUT HIS STAMP ON THE SHOW Triple Crown Summer is perhaps the most challenging theme yet for West 18th Street Fashion Show Musical Director, Mark Southerland, with its hints of historical southern culture and Derby connections. But from great challenges comes the greatest success, and Mark has created a lineup that will thrill the 18th Street audience.

MINT JULEP, ANYONE?

We are thrilled to announce that our lovely new neighbors around the corner on Wyandotte Street, Snow & Co, is this year’s official on-street bar for the show! For the show, Snow & Co will be serving mint juleps, Boulevard beer, wine and cocktails, so come thirsty because their drinks are irresistible. Snow & Co specializes in artful frozen cocktails made with fresh ingredients & premium spirits. They also serve lunch, dinner, and snacks and everything is so fresh and yummy. Stop by and support this wonderful local establishment at 1815 Wyandotte, or ask them to cater your event too!

OPENING ACT

Victor and Penny will perform their “antique pop” for the opening act.

Victor & Penny is a Kansas City based ukulele and guitar duo singing music they call “antique pop.” Playing vintage instruments with modern sensibility, they bring a fresh twist to music of the early 20th century and unique arrangements of modern tunes with characteristic charm and good humor. Victor & Penny is Jeff Freling of the Chicago Blue Man Group and Erin McGrane of Alacartoona and “Up In The Air.” Their take on 1920s-’30s jazz is highlighted by Jeff Freling’s deft and oft-surprising guitar work and Erin’s infectious energy. The duo is touring the USA in 2012 having traveled nearly 15,000 miles to date. www.victorandpenny.com

RUNWAY MUSIC

Mark Southerland proudly welcomes returning musician, Helen Gillet, back to perform at the West 18th Street Fashion Show. Gillet, a New Orleans based musician, is a long-time friend and collaborator of Mark Southerland. The two have been showcased playing their own brand of creative music in Austin, New York, and New Orleans. This year’s show will use Helen’s origi- Helen Gillet and Mark Southerland nal compositions as well as improvised ideas to underscore the runway collections. Helen Gillet was just voted “best in contemporary jazz” in New Orleans’ 2012 Gambit Big Easy Awards. She is currently celebrating the release of her solo self entitled album recorded by Chad Meise at “The Cooler” in Kansas City. www.helengillet.com
