The Kroc Center is Celebrating 5 Years!

On Friday January 27, The Salvation Army Kroc Center kicked off its Five Year Anniversary with a news conference, special guests and our annual Suits for Vets program. We introduced a new logo and Five Year Seal, and Major Monty talked about our new tag line, “Growing Strong Together." Taking the podium were two former South Bend mayors, both of whom share a lot of credit for convincing The Salvation Army and the people of South Bend that one of the 26 Kroc Centers should be built right here, on the corner of Western Avenue and Chapin Street. Steve Luecke talked about the arduous fundraising process, not in terms that were daunting and difficult, but with a big smile and sense of pride in the outcome. 4

SPRING & SUMMER 2017

Joe Kernan remembered another major supporter of the project, Notre Dame’s Reverend Theodore Hesburgh. “After one of those fundraising meetings, Father Ted asked me to drive him back to campus. During the ride, I asked him why he was such an outspoken proponent of this multi-million dollar project. After all, The Salvation Army is a church – isn’t that a conflict?” According to Kernan, Father Hesburgh said, "When it comes to serving the poor, no one does it better The Salvation Army.” Major Angie ended the program with a prayer and rededication of the building. With unwavering conviction She said, “… today we rededicate this facility and ourselves for this purpose and we pray that God will lead us on as we continue to serve this community wholeheartedly for His glory.”

Hello Kroc Center Community! Hope of warmer weather and sunshine are just around the corner! I have already started thinking about a garden for my back yard. I love to see a full garden bursting with flowers or produce. Unfortunately, I always seem to have a few plants that do not keep up with the others. That is when I get to work to give it extra care and attention! I do not want any one of my plants not to thrive. We have the same idea blooming here at The Salvation Army Kroc Community Center. We are planting new ideas of how to encourage, equip and engage people so that we can all grow strong together. This idea has sprouted from a passage of Scripture encouraging us to use our own gifts in helping others to grow so we all continue to mature and become strong. We are encouraging physical health and strength in the fitness center. We are equipping families for success through the Family Resource Center. We are engaging people in worship and Bible study through the Kroc Community Church. We are encouraging and equipping young people to thrive through our youth initiatives. We are engaging youth and adults in recreational activities through the gym and pool programs. All with the goal of growing strong together! Will you join the Kroc Community Center? We want you to be a part of our family and experience the hope and strength we can plant in your life!
