1 Purpose 1.1

The Welfare Committee is Responsible for: 1.1.1 Ensuring that the welfare interests of students are effectively represented within the Union, University and at a national level 1.1.2

Organising campaigns on welfare issues relevant to students of the University

1.1.3

Implementing Union welfare policy

1.1.4

Assisting the JCRs Committee with managing relationships with the University including supporting them in relevant campaigns

1.1.5

Maintaining up to date knowledge, information and opinion specific to the diverse groups of the student body

1.1.6

Monitoring the success of the Union’s advice service and its projects

1.1.7

Managing various funds to provide specific support to students, currently including; University Hardship Fund, University Emergency Fund, SUSU Emergency Loan Fund, and Early Years Centre Refund Scheme

1.1.8

Overseeing the work of nightline

1.2

The Committee shall be chaired by the VP Welfare and Communities

1.3

The Committee shall operate under the general rules governing standing committees as outlined in Standing Order 3, Section 1 of the Constitution.

3 Sub Committees 3.1

The Welfare Committee has created the following sub-committees

3.2

Nightline Committee

3.2.1 The purpose of Nightline Committee shall be to manage the activities of

Nightline, ensuring the department provides a high standard of service and operates in accordance with Union policies and health and safety requirements.

3.2.2 The Nightline Sub-Committee is formed of; 3.2.2.1 Nightline Co-ordinator (x2, joint chair) 3.2.2.2

3.2.3 Other membership 3.2.3.1 VP Welfare and Communities (honorary) 3.2.4 Election of Committee 3.2.4.1 Voluntary members shall be elected by secret ballot at a committee meeting

4 Meetings 4.1

Timings

4.1.1 Meetings shall ordinarily be held at least twice per semester 4.1.2 Subcommittees shall decide the frequency of their meetings 4.1.3 The Chair shall, with appropriate support, ensure agendas and papers are circulated at least 3 clear days in advance of meetings

4.2

Election of Voluntary Officers 4.2.1 Election of Voluntary Officers shall occur during summer term at a publicised meeting of Welfare Committee

4.2.2 Election shall normally be by show of hand, but the chair can decide to alter this as long as the means conform to guidance in Standing Order 6 of the Constitution

4.2.3 At the first meeting of the academic year, the committee shall elect

representatives to other standing committees as appropriate. It shall be the responsibility of the chair to liaise with other standing committees to ensure these vacancies are known.
