Award Criteria This criterion should be used as a GUIDELINE when completing the nomination form for the Colours & Awards given out each year at the AU Ball.

General Awards Criteria - Any student can be nominated for any club affiliated to the AU as long as they are a full member of the Students’ Union and the Athletic Union - Where possible, individuals must compete in the name of the University of Southampton and must play for their Athletic Union club - The committee must be selective on all nominations and only put forward who they feel should deserve Colours & Awards - The nominations must include activities/representation for this year, dating back to last year’s AU Ball and does include the summer - Although an individual may meet the criteria it is the discretion of the Colours Committee to decide who is awarded Colours & Awards and students will not automatically receive Colours if they have reached the required standards

1st Year Sportsperson 1st Year Sportsperson is an award given to an individual who in their first year in university has contributed an exceptional amount to every aspect of club life.

The Sports Volunteer of the Year This is awarded for an outstanding contribution to student sport at the university. The award will be given to a student who has gone far beyond what has been asked of them within their role as a student volunteer.

The Sport & Wellbeing Award Goes to the team or individual that has organised, innovated and excelled in their sport and through doing so has raised the profile of both their sport and the University of Southampton.

Most Improved Team of the Year Most improved team of the year is awarded to the team which has made the biggest improvement since the beginning of the current sporting year. It is there to realise the effort and work that has to be put in to succeeding at any level.

Team of the Year The team of the year is awarded to the team which has been outstanding in uplifting the profile of sport at Southampton University. This award is often associated with being awarded to the team who has been most successful at the highest level of university sport during the season. It is a great accolade to receive this honour, and recognises the whole team in its success.


Sportsman of the Year Criteria The sportsman award is presented to an individual who has shown a very high standard of skill in their sport, together with a large contribution to the club and or sport at the University. The award is given to the individual who has managed to balance sporting excellence with furthering sport at Southampton.

Sportswoman of the Year Criteria The sportswoman award is presented to an individual who has shown a very high standard of skill in their sport, together with a large contribution to the club and or sport at the University. The award is given to the individual who has managed to balance sporting excellence with furthering sport at Southampton.

The Union Engagement Award This award is present to its winner by the VP Student Engagement Sabbatical Officer. It will be awarded to an individual or club who has shown great efforts to encourage engagement and participation in any sporting activity.

Outstanding Athlete of the Year The Outstanding Athlete of the Year Award is presented to an individual who has excelled at an International standard or equivalent in their sport. This award highlights the sporting achievement of an exceptional student.

Sports Personality of the Year Criteria Sports Personality is awarded to an individual who has made an exceptional contribution to every aspect of sporting life at the university. AU members will vote for the student who they feel most embodies the spirit of the Athletic Union.

The Athletic Union Award The Athletic Union Award is decided and awarded by the VP Sports Development Sabbatical Officer. The award will go to an individual or club who has shown the most commitment to improving the life of members in the Athletic Union as a whole. The award honours its winner for going ‘above and beyond’, and is purely designed to recognise those that really deserve commendation for the efforts they bestow in embodying what we try to achieve as a Student Union. This is the highest accolade that the Athletic Union can present to a student.
