“The way that we judge others is the way that we judge ourselves. Be kind.

Andre

Andre has loved fashion for as long as he can remember. His style is bold, provocative and avant-garde and his sketchbook mirrors it perfectly. “My muses are music and poetry.”

Hi Daphne, could you please tell us a few words about yourself?

How would you describe a beautiful person?

Chinese, 22 this year and am from Singapore. I’m loud around the people I love, my friends say that my raucous laughter, expressive face, tattoos and my big heart defines me the most. I’m not very tall, just 154cm at height and I’m what people call “plus sized”. My muses are music and poetry.

Beauty, in my case has never been defined on the outside. Yes, of course, when you meet someone new you’d only have what is presented on the outside as your only way of judgement. But after getting to know someone better, you would actually see the beautiful qualities of a person. It doesn’t have to be fantastic but little things like having a big heart for animals or little talents define them for who they are. Looking good on the outside is a bonus point, especially if we go to work etc. But if you open your heart and wear it well on your sleeve, people will feel it and somehow they will be able to see the beauty from within. It’s a funny thing being human sometimes, ain’t it? We are all alike yet so unalike at the same time. People can see the qualities we have even if we can’t see it within ourselves. And when you smile wholeheartedly, the whole world smiles with you because beauty from the inside is infectious and there aren’t any other words which one can use in any explanation. It’s like purity from spring water, the stripped and raw emotion one gets when you listen to a song which fills your body whole with sunlight. It’s.. this vulnerability and nakedness in a good way. Being in touch with yourself from inside and showing it to others, now that’s true beauty.

What do you think is your strongest quality? If we are talking about personal characteristic qualities, my friends say that I’m patient, very forgiving and determined. In terms of body, I think my eyes and tattoos are my strongest point.

What about your biggest flaw? For the emotional side, I tend to take criticism very seriously, especially when it comes to the way I look/appear to people. Somehow I tend to allow words eat me up. But I turn that flaw into my strength because it’s my sole fuel and drive in changing myself.

Uzay

Uzay’s biggest struggle is “having no struggles at all”. Inspired by his mother, a casual seamstress, he began designing clothes and shoes, slowly building his own brand. After he finishes his Computer Science degree he wishes to return home, to Nigeria. Uzay believes that a beautiful person has a good heart and is always well dressed.

8:30 am, at the studio. we set the lights and wait for the models. one by one they come rushing in. some have 10 or 30 minutes, before they need to go back to their everyday life. they do not know each other. nobody chose their clothes or styled their hair. they show to the camera, what they decide to show everyday to the world. maybe today it is a fake smile or a mask of confidence, or maybe it is pure happiness. you never know. different skin colours, nationalities, ages, dreams and fears, yet they all love fashion.

“And kid, you’ve got to love yourself. You’ve got wake up at four in the morning, brew black coffee, and stare at the birds drowning in the darkness of the dawn. You’ve got to sit next to the man at the train station who’s reading your favorite book and start a conversation. You’ve got to come home after a bad day and burn your skin from a shower. Then you’ve got to wash all your sheets until they smell of lemon detergent you bought for four dollars at the local grocery store. You’ve got to stop taking everything so goddam personally. You are not the moon kissing the black sky. You’ve got to compliment someones crooked brows at an art fair and tell them that their eyes remind you of green swimming pools in mid July. You’ve got to stop letting yourself get upset about things that won’t matter in two years. Sleep in on Saturday mornings and wake yourself up early on Sunday. You’ve got to stop worrying about what you’re going to tell her when she finds out. You’ve got to stop over thinking why he stopped caring about you over six months ago. You’ve got to stop asking everyone for their opinions. Fuck it. Love yourself, kiddo. You’ve got to love yourself.” Unknown

...and remember together, we are kind.
