SOUTHAMPTON CITY ART GALLERY George Shaw: My Back to Nature 4 May – 1 September This exhibition features over 50 paintings and drawings made by the artist George Shaw during his two year residency at the National Gallery. With unrestricted access to the gallery and its collection Shaw was inspired to create new works that offer a contemporary response to the mythological landscapes painted by masters such as Titian, Poussin and Constable. Shaw is interested in how the stories in these paintings – often featuring violence, illicit sex and drunkenness – have parallels in the way that people might behave in the woods today, when they think they are unobserved. This is complemented by Shaw’s interest in Christian imagery, especially how landscape artists of the past often alluded to the Crucifixion in their depiction of trees.

We March On: Southampton Football Club, Then and Now 29 March – 28 October 2018 What goes on behind the scenes in the build up to a match? How is the club leading research to help prevent player injury? Which Southampton player introduced football to Brazil in 1894? And which player had the worst haircut in the 1980s? Discover these things and a great deal more in a major exhibition about the Saints which will explore the club’s rich history and how it operates today to meet the challenges of Premier League Football. The club runs one of the country’s leading Football Academies and a state of the art training facility at Staplewood in the New Forest. The Academy has produced many players who have gone on to play international football. Southampton Football Club has a strong spirit of community with a legion of loyal fans and has been an integral part of the city’s life since its foundation over 130 years ago. The exhibition will chart the highs and lows, and provide an insight into life at the club through the supporters, ex-players and backroom staff. Image Credit: L/H Saints legend Terry Paine. A Saint’s Selection: Footballer’s Choice

Shown alongside the works by Shaw will be two paintings from the National Gallery’s Collection which served as inspiration during the residency.

14 April – 6 October

In conjunction with the major exhibition at SeaCity Museum, We March On, Southampton Football Club, Then and Now, we’ve asked players and club staff to select works from the City’s art collection. See what Saints legend Micky Channon would hang on his wall at home!

Kelly Richardson: Pillars of Dawn 25 May – 6 October Taking cues from 19th-century painting, 20th-century cinema, and 21st-century planetary research, acclaimed Vancouver Island based artist Kelly Richardson crafts prints and videos that offer imaginative glimpses into the future which prompt a careful consideration of the present. For over a decade, Richardson has made works which speculate on what lies ahead given our current trajectory, often by imagining sublime, apocalyptic landscapes that have become inhospitable to humanity. Exhibiting across two galleries, Pillars of Dawn presents us with a scenario seemingly from the near future, in which all of our points of orientation are placed in doubt. The works ask us not only ‘how did we get here?’ or ‘what have we done?’ but ‘what have we become?’ and ‘what can we do - collectively?’ For Richardson, there can be no more urgent a set of questions. Southampton Castle has been a feature of the landscape of the town since the 11th century. The original wooden motte and bailey castle was rebuilt in stone and extended several times. It was visited by kings and raided by pirates. It fell into disuse in the 15th century as the defence of the town refocused on the walls, and was gradually encroached on by the townsfolk. This exhibition explores the history of the castle, through archaeology, documentary evidence and the stone structures which survive today. It will also examine prehistoric and Saxon evidence from the castle area, and feature its Gothic re-invention in the age of Jane Austen.
