HERE AT SOS, WE CHANGE YOUNG LIVES, BUILDING CHARACTER AND DEVELOPING LEADERSHIP THROUGH MENTORING OUTDOORS.

DEAR SOS FAMILY, The 2022/23 season was a special one. Sure, many of our communities in Tahoe, Park City, and across Colorado saw near record snowfall, but that’s not what I’m referring to. Last winter, thanks to the support of our community and folks like you, we made some of the most meaningful steps we’ve ever taken to ensure a long-term positive impact for our participants.

In our commitment to keeping more youth engaged for more years of our program, we expanded our Mentor Program from six to nine locations; adding Steamboat, Detroit, and Kenosha. In this 23/24 season, we are additionally welcoming Seattle and Minneapolis to our Mentor Program.

We know, and the data backs it up, that mentorship matters. Youth who have a mentor in their life are more likely to graduate high school, enroll in college, hold a leadership position, and volunteer in the community. We are dedicated to ensuring our participants are successful in whatever they choose to pursue, and mentorship is a critical piece of the equation.

Furthermore this past summer, we oversaw continued expansion of our Career Development Program. We grew from three to five locations; adding North and South Lake Tahoe with over 20 teens and young adults engaging in paid career placements across the outdoor industry. This year, we will continue sustainable growth for this program.

Lastly, we engaged over 3,000 kids and teens across 10 states, 16 communities, and 25 mountain resorts. That’s over 3,000 trajectories influenced and lives changed. We will do the same again this year.

We have so much to celebrate from this past year and so much to look forward to in the upcoming season and beyond. Please know that none of this, our accomplishments nor our goals, exists in a vacuum. Our impact is real and significant, and it’s because of our dedicated community.

Together, we are bridging the opportunity gap. We are helping young people to build life skills. And we are cultivating meaningful relationships so that our youth can truly feel like they belong everywhere.

WHO WE SERVE Since 1993, SOS has been committed to providing equitable opportunities for young people across our communities. We work with local school districts and youth agency partners to identify youth who would benefit most from our program. Our participants are optimistic, resilient, and ready to work hard. They simply do not have the same access to resources and opportunities as many of their peers, which limits their future potential.

RECOGNITION Mentoring Best Practices The Mentor Program was verified through the completion of the National Quality Mentoring System (NQMS) assessment performed by MENTOR Colorado, wherein SOS received the highest rating: a gold badge. This designation reflects the effectiveness of SOS programs in excelling in the six core areas of effective mentoring practice: recruitment, screening, training, matching and initiation, monitoring and support, and closure.

STORIES & PRESS The Power of the Chairlift Conversation Mentorship is key to our impact, but part of what makes our mentoring model so effective are the conversations shared between mentors & mentees on the chairlift.

Storytelling by Design: Women of SOS Outreach Design Custom Limited Edition Nordica Ski It’s not often that four young women, all under the age of 22, come together to design a custom limited edition ski to bring to market. But in partnership with Nordica and Christy Sports, SOS participants and alumni did just that.

Colorado Snowsport’s Hall of Fame: Top of the Hill Award In recognition of long term impact, commitment to DEI in the outdoors, and excellence in youth development, SOS won the Colorado Snowsports Hall of Fame’s ‘Top of the Hill Award.’

Outdoor Retailer Inspiration Award Finalist For its achievements in bridging the opportunity gap for youth in the outdoors, SOS was a finalist for the Outdoor Retailer Inspiration Award.

Vail Daily: Local teenagers build work ethic, confidence through SOS Outreach’s Career Development Program This summer, five local high school students were given the opportunity to participate in paid apprenticeships as part of SOS Outreach’s Career Development Program. In its third year, the program helps connect students with opportunities to explore careers in the outdoors and hospitality industries.

Earlier this year, the nonprofit received a $45,000 grant from the state to growt he career development program in Colorado.

Our signature events are critical for raising money to support SOS programs throughout the winter. But these are more than just fundraisers. Our signature events are a one-of-a-kind opportunity for our community to gather in the mountains and feel the same sense of stoke, accomplishment, and belonging that SOS participants feel throughout the season.

SILVERTON POWDER CHALLENGE

This three-day trip rallies around adventure and expanding opportunities for youth. Our days are spent enjoying some of the most pristine powder Colorado has to offer in the magical San Juan Mountains with exclusive guided skiing and riding at Silverton Mountain and on Red Mountain Pass. In the evenings we come together to hear from inspiring speakers and to raise support and funds for SOS Outreach.

PARK CITY INTECONNECT

The Ski Utah Interconnect Tour is a unique opportunity to ski six world class Utah resorts tour- Deer Valley, Park City Mountain, Solitude, Brighton, Alta, Snowbird, and the backcountry terrain in between – all in one day!
