This issue of the Franciscan Spirit is our way of saying “thank you” and showing you some of the ways you have been a part of our lives. You may be a Franciscan Associate of the congregation, a benefactor, or a longtime friend of one of our sisters. Listing the names is a way of acknowledging the real persons who walk with us and to whom we are ever grateful. The words of St. Paul say it well: “(We) thank (our) God whenever (we) think of you; and every time (we) pray for…you, (we) pray with joy, remembering how you have helped to spread the Good News…” (Philippians 1:3) Many of you have given of your financial resources, as well as your time and personal presence for our various events and celebrations. The results of your collaboration with us can be seen in the photos depicting some of the key activities we’ve had in the past year. We also know generations of your families, having taught children and grandchildren, parents and grandparents. You may be one of our colleagues, volunteers, health care personnel, employees, relatives or friends. The stories in this issue illustrate the connections we have to one another. One of the best ways we can extend our thanks is through our prayers offered for you each week. As you read on, you will see we have been blessed to be recipients of a variety of grants and support from foundations which help sustain our existing ministries and provide seed money for new projects. This type of financial assistance allows us to continue our good works as we move into the future.

EDITORIAL OFFICE

In addition, 2012 will be an exceptional year for the congregation as we have one of our own sisters, Mother Marianne Cope, being named a saint in the Catholic Church. We share this joy with you as we look forward to her canonization ceremony which will take place in Rome later this year.

Rooted in the Gospel and energized by the Spirit of St. Francis and St. Clare, we seek to be women of vision living in right relationship with God, one another and with all creation. The goal of Franciscan Spirit is to reflect what it means to live the Gospel as Sisters of St. Francis of the Neumann Communities in our everyday lives. The spirit of Franciscan life is best described as: a joyful attitude, simplicity of heart, giving praise and thanks and greeting all with peace. Our hope is that concepts like these will come alive in the people you meet in this publication we call Franciscan Spirit, and that you will be inspired to partner with us in our mission.

Thanks AND Praise FOR Journeying “It is in giving that we receive…” These words of St. Francis of Assisi remind us that when we give of our time, talent or treasure to others, we receive much more in return. When a life is made better, or a person is touched by God’s love, you’ve invested in something that is worth more than anything else. The Sisters of St. Francis, in partnership with donors and friends, reach out to people in need, care for aging sisters, and work for a world of justice and peace. Your gift helps us continue to give our gifts to those in need. In this special benefactor appreciation issue, we celebrate and give thanks for your continued support which enables our sisters to serve God’s people who are most in need. May God bless you for your kindness and generosity. p The reliquary with the physical remains of St. Marianne Cope at the St. Anthony Convent chapel in Syracuse, N.Y. is beautifully adorned with flower arrangements for her Jan. 23 feast day celebration.

DID YOU KNOW?

Crafted by Eugene Cahalan of Greenleaf Cabinet Makers in Syracuse, N.Y., the reliquary of St. Marianne Cope is simple and symbolic of her life and work. The reliquary itself is made from ribbon mahogany. A replica of Mother Marianne’s grave monument surrounded by maile leaves enhances the reliquary and was carved by Hawaiian Artist Douglas Williams using koa wood, which is native to Hawaii. Since Mother Marianne was a lover of beauty, plumeria flowers were carved by Steven Hale of Baldwinsville, N.Y. and serve as additional decorative accents. Although not native to Hawaii, the plumeria was brought from Germany (Mother Marianne’s birthplace) to Hawaii in 1860 by Dr. Wilhelm Hillebrand who traveled to the islands in an effort to stop the spread of Hansen’s disease (leprosy). The reliquary was dedicated Jan. 23, 2009 during the Mother Marianne’s feast day celebration at the St. Anthony Convent chapel in Syracuse.

Happily “Captured”

G

rowing up in Oswego, N.Y., Fran O’Connor recalls being first introduced to the sisters when his mother told him he would be sent to the St. Francis Orphanage if he didn’t behave. “I did behave,” smiled Fran, “but thereafter viewed the sisters with a wary eye lest I be ‘captured.’” The sisters reentered Fran’s life when he was introduced to Sister Leonilla Fuchs to receive her approval to marry her niece, Anne. A native of Germany, Sister Leonilla had come to Utica, N.Y. in the early 1930s, where Anne grew up surrounded by the love and Franciscan example of the sisters. “Fortunately, I was accepted as suitable, and we were married in 1958,” said Fran. “Sister Leonilla became an integral part of our lives — sharing births (six children), baptisms, holidays, and life in general.” For the next 50 years, Fran was lovingly “captured,” becoming friend, advisor, and sponsor for the sisters. Initially, his involvement followed Sister Leonilla. When she was transferred to Syracuse, N.Y., Fran met Mother Viola, and after seeing where the elderly sisters were housed, donated several televisions for their enjoyment. When Sister Leonilla was sent to Italy to oversee the Franciscan

p Fran O’Connor is greeted by Sister Patricia Burkard, general minister of the Sisters of St. Francis, during the Dec. 20 press conference in Syracuse, N.Y. announcing the pope’s proclamation of the sainthood of Mother Marianne Cope.

Pensione (hostel) in Rome, the O’Connors were moved to ensure that the sisters had washers and dryers — eliminating the laborious task of doing mountains of laundry by hand. Generous funding for an orphanage in Italy and a house for the sisters’ new mission in Peru soon followed. A successful businessman, Fran recognized the need to help the sisters prepare financially for the future. His foresight, support and guidance were instrumental in helping the sisters computerize their accounting systems, renovate key facilities, and establish a retirement trust for their long-term care. An enthusiastic supporter of numerous missions and projects, Fran’s impact is also evident in the newly remodeled shrine and reliquary of St. Marianne Cope at the St. Anthony Chapel in Syracuse. “When the sisters first mentioned Mother Marianne to me years ago and the need to set aside space for pursuit of her cause, I asked ‘Who

was she?’ And now she’s going to be canonized. Clearly the sisters knew what they were doing,” said Fran. Inspired by his example, Fran’s sons Patrick and John have followed in his footsteps both in business and support of the sisters. Patrick serves on the Gingerbread House Daycare and Preschool board; and John on the board of trustees of St. Francis Social Adult Day Care and the Fairway to Heaven Golf Tournament committee. “We are so blessed to have the benefit of Fran’s business savvy, community connections, and generosity,” says longtime friend Sister Grace Anne Dillenschneider. For his part, Fran simply says, “I have received far more than I have given. I’ve enjoyed my time being “captured.” Fran O’Connor and the O’Connor family, thanks and praise for journeying with us! “Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you.” 1 THESSALONIANS 5:18

Dear Friends, I had an epiphany as I was thinking about the sisters and giving and journeying with them. Giving to the sisters is somehow, special. Giving is so often a lost art these days. We are asked to give by a worthy charity, we write a check, send it to the charity, receive a thank you letter and receipt and file it away until tax time. In this exchange of giving and receiving thanks, words such as “investment,” “acknowledgement,” “ROI,” “donor directed or advised,” “taxable portion” further sterilize the significance of the act itself. Admittedly, even when giving to the Sisters of St. Francis we may fall into this routine. Or, do we? As you are reading through this benefactor report, take a moment to reflect about what compelled you to give to the sisters? How you felt when you made your gift? What it means to you to “journey” with the sisters? Now, wonder whether the thousands of others who have joined you on this journey feel the same way? It’s a communion of sorts, isn’t it? Why do we give of our time and resources to the Sisters of St. Francis? I think it’s because we desire to emulate their dedication and devotion to serve God and humankind. We admire their selflessness and are inspired by their acts of good. We need their love and are thankful for their lives and for their prayers. We feel blessed to be a part of their journey. We feel closer to God and feel joy in joining the sisters in doing his will. “In giving, we receive,” said St. Francis. How true! Thanks and praise to all of you who journey with the Sisters of St. Francis of the Neumann Communities. Peace and good,

he Sisters of St. Francis are grateful to the many foundations that supported us in 2011. Grant funding helped to: sustain programs, support sisters in ministry, build capacity for future success, provide aid to retired sisters and assist with sisters’ vocation efforts. A sponsored ministry of the Sisters of St. Francis, Change A Heart fosters leaders in the church, empowers young adults to live a life of compassion and service with the poor and provides valuable services to the poor in western Pennsylvania. Sister Suzanne provides direct legal services to vulnerable and low income individuals who cannot afford to pay for the legal services they need. A grant from the Donald D. Benefactor Report

Thanks and Praise for Journeying With Us! A personal and professional journey Frank Smith’s connection with the Sisters of St. Francis has been a personal and professional journey. As a young respiratory therapist, Frank was impressed by the sisters’ Franciscan reverence and compassion. Today, as president of Franciscan Companies, he leads a network of health care service providers affiliated with St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center in Syracuse, N.Y. and other regional hospitals. His mission is simple. “The sisters and St. Joseph’s are my top two priorities,” says Frank. Under his leadership, for several years Franciscan Companies has provided generous lead support to the sisters’ annual Fairway to Heaven Golf Tournament. Frank served as chairman of the 2011 tournament raising more than $130,000. This is a new record in corporate and personal support for the sisters’ retirement needs. Key to this achievement was the energy and enthusiasm that Frank brought to the table — engaging new friends, supporters, and an equally enthusiastic team of Franciscan Companies volunteers. Frank Smith and Franciscan Companies, thanks and praise for journeying with us.

Discovery leads to a lifelong prayer relationship In 2002, Sister Bea Leising received a letter from a young man living in London, England. While Bernie Pistillo was going through the items in his mother’s bedroom in Omaha, Neb. shortly after she passed away, he had discovered a handwritten note from his mother about the western New York Sisters of St. Francis Adopt A Sister program. It compelled him to make a gift in memory of his mother. Moved by Bernie’s gesture, Sister Marian Rose Mansius, who was general minister at the time, wrote back to suggest that a stained glass window in memory of his mother be named as part of the renovation of the 1902 chapel on the grounds of St. Mary of the Angels convent in Williamsville, N.Y. A prayer partnership was born. Over the years, Bernie’s relationship with the Sisters of St. Francis has flourished through his powerful spiritual friendship with Sister Marian Rose. “I feel like my mother somehow was offering me the love and friendship of all the sisters, and Sister Marian Rose in particular,” Bernie said. “They have all been great companions to me over the last 10 years. It has been a wonderful relationship, spiritual as well as personal.” Despite living in p Rev. Msgr. David G. LiPuma, secretary to the bishop, Diocese of Buffalo with Sister Marian London, New York City, N.Y. and now San Francisco, Calif., he Rose Mansius and Bernie Pistillo has devotedly journeyed to St. Mary of the Angels at least twice a th year to attend wine tastings, spaghetti dinners, 150 anniversary special events, and to spend quality time with Sister Marian Rose. Bernie’s consistent generosity in support of the Sisters of St. Francis’ mission and ministries is a blessing to our congregation. Bernie Pistillo, thanks and praise for journeying with us.

Parents’ example inspires vocation Since Laura Hackenberg was a little girl, she remembers her parents — Errol and Kitty Hackenberg — as being prayerful people. “They always made sure that we (children) were aware of God’s blessings, and set an example for us through their generosity at church and in our neighborhood,” she explained. Laura often thought that religious life might be in her future. Six years ago, after attending one of the sisters’ Come and See retreats and considering several communities, she committed to the Sisters of St. Francis. “The Franciscan charism (spirit) of hospitality touched me in a special way and I just knew this was where I belonged,” she says. This year, the Sisters of St. Francis formation program, which guides the preparation and training of new vocations, received a vital boost from an anonymous donor who made a charitable gift through an Individual Retirement Account (IRA). Presently, six women are in formation with the congregation. Today, Sister Laura continues her formation as a Sister of St. Francis in Syracuse, N.Y., while serving as chaplain with the spiritual care team at St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center in Syracuse. Sister Laura credits the love and support of her parents as “the shining lights” in her life. And they are equally supportive of her vocation. Sister Laura and the Hackenberg family, thanks and praise for journeying with us.

A life with the sisters Barbara (Barb) Kamrowski was taught in third grade by Sister Angela at St. Mary’s Elementary School in Lancaster, N.Y., and her life has not been the same since. “The sisters have been a part of my entire life!” she exclaims. “They have helped me grow spiritually, and have enhanced my life in every way possible.” The sisters continued to teach Barb throughout elementary school and high school. In fact she was so enamored by these special women that, in high school, she was certain that she was being called to join them. One thing stood in her way, however — a young man by the name of Alexander (Al) Kamrowski. So instead of joining the convent, in 1956 Barb married the love of her life, with best friend, soon-to-be Sister Marie Canice Geyer, serving as her maid of honor. Through the years, Barb and Al continued their very special relationship with the sisters. Barb used Al’s car to teach the sisters how to drive. She also ran bake sales to raise enough money to help buy the sisters a station wagon of their own. It was certainly a family affair until in 1973, at the young age of 44, Al tragically passed away. “It was such a sad time in my life,” Barb p Sister Barbara Whelan and Barbara Kamrowski remembers, “but the sisters completely surrounded me, helping me in so many ways.” In 1987, Barb entered the sisters’ Franciscan Associate program, which is an engaging way for lay persons to pray, grow and serve with a religious community while maintaining their individual lifestyles. She is still an associate today. She is also a receptionist for the sisters, a volunteer for numerous special events, including the “Nun-Sweeter” bake sale. She serves on many committees, and is also a very generous benefactor. The sisters are deeply grateful for her lifetime of service and commitment. Her involvement with the sisters has been a blessing to all. “I have prayed, laughed, cried, eaten, traveled and grown spiritually with these women,” she explains. “They are such a part of who I am, and now I even live with one!” Barb currently resides with Sister Barbara Whelan in Depew, N.Y. They are the closest of friends! Barbara Kamrowski, thanks and praise for journeying with us. WINTER 2012 17

Storing up treasures in heaven In 1994, Marge Gorman’s children were grown and she found herself newly retired. She asked herself, “Now what?” That’s when an article about the sisters’ Franciscan Associate program caught her eye. Marge quickly became involved, bringing communion, helping out at Francis House, organizing activities, and serving on the program’s core team. Today, she is co-director of the Franciscan Associate program in Syracuse, N.Y. “I felt so grateful to the sisters”, explains Marge. “Without them, my kids wouldn’t have their Catholic education. And when my parents and son were sick, their care helped me get through it all.” Volunteering was one way Marge could give back. But she went the extra step in making annual gifts to support the sisters’ retirement needs and missions. In 2011, her creativity helped make possible a much-needed walk-in tub and chair for the sisters at Jolenta Convent in Syracuse. “I had some old family silver that no one was going to use, so I sold it and gave the money for the tub,” she says. Marge says she is grateful for the work of the sisters. “It’s nice to know an ordinary person like me can make a difference.” Marge Gorman, thanks and praise for journeying with us.

Wine divine! Bob Hamill and Christine Lussier of Philadelphia, Pa., and friends Kevin and Melissa Walma of Syracuse, N.Y. were enjoying a summer afternoon wine tasting in the Finger Lakes when they began a conversation with Greg Griffin, congregational director of Mission Advancement, and his companion. As the three couples shared stories, they took special interest when Greg mentioned that he worked with the Sisters of St. Francis of the Neumann Communities. Bob was a product of a Catholic education in Philadelphia, Pa. after being taught by the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia. Kevin and Melissa had children at the Gingerbread House at Franciscan Center in Syracuse. Successful business partners and philanthropists, Bob and Kevin expressed an interest in supporting worthy causes. When Greg reconnected with the two couples a few weeks later with the perfect opportunity to support the sisters, they graciously agreed and became lead sponsors for the ninth annual Fairway to Heaven Golf Tournament reception in Syracuse. Bob and Christine traveled from Philadelphia to rejoin Kevin and Melissa and the sisters for an evening of fine wine, dining and camaraderie. The Walmas also ensured a return engagement when they were the high bidders of a private dinner for eight with the sisters at Stella Maris Retreat and Renewal Center! Bob Hamill, Christine Lussier, Kevin and Melissa Walma, thanks and praise for journeying with us.

Benefactor Report

From colleagues to friends For more than 25 years Sister Mary Meyer and Mara Roberts have kept a relationship which began in a Montessori classroom. As colleagues and professionals, they shared a love of children and provided an environment in which children could be stimulated to learn. Although life took them in different directions over the years, their friendship continued. “We’ve p Sister Mary Meyer and Mara Roberts always made room for our changes,” said Mara. “I love the way Sister Mary listens to me and keys into me. We just clicked. I know that she prays for me always even though we may not see each other much. I know I have her prayers.” “Maura has a great sense of humor,” said Sister Mary. “She always sees the positive in situations. Our conversations never seem to have a period. We’ve shared life’s ups and downs, and all that things that are important to us.” Sister Mary explains that Mara is up-to-date on all the latest technologies while she admits that she is not. However, she says, “Mara is also a dedicated mother and very involved in the Women’s Guild in her parish.” Summing it up Sister Mary says, “We enjoy each other’s company. Our friendship makes me a better person.” Sister Mary Meyer and Mara Roberts, thanks and praise for journeying with us.

Caring comes full circle Connie and Roger Rodriguez were “mission kids” and forever thankful for it. Two of eight siblings who lived at Mount Loretto, they were brought to The Mission of the Immaculate Virgin in 1954. In the nine years they spent growing up at Mount Loretto, the nurturing love and care of the Sisters of St. Francis made an impact that would last a lifetime. After graduating from St. Mary’s High School with honors, Connie went on to have a successful career as a legal secretary for several of New York’s top law firms. Roger, who recently retired, also found success working in finance for high profile companies such as IBM and Novartis pharmaceuticals. Year after year, they made time to visit their mission “moms” at Immaculate Conception Convent in p Mount Loretto Orphanage, Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y. Connie also served as Staten Island, N.Y., late 19th secretary to the Mount Loretto Alumni Association century helping to plan annual reunions, liturgies and gatherings of “mission kids” at Mount Loretto and at the convent. “The sisters are our family, and most of us Mount Loretto alumni keep them close to our hearts. We always want to give back because they did so much for us,” said Roger. When Connie went home to God in 2009, she did not leave without saying “thank you” to her “family” of Franciscan sisters. She left a significant bequest to support the care of retired sisters. Roger also plans to include the Sisters of St. Francis in his will. For Roger and in memory of Connie, thanks and praise for journeying with us.

Memorial gift leads to reunion between pupil and teacher On a rainy day in April, Pittsburgh, Pa. native Patrick Meehan made an exploratory call to Mount Alvernia in Millvale, Pa. He wanted to inquire about making a gift in memory of his wife, Thelma A. Meehan. He had been taught by the sisters in the late 1940s at Corpus Christi Catholic School and cherished the education he received. Regional Mission Advancement Director, Paul Stabile took the call. After a few questions, Paul recognized that one of the sisters whom Patrick p Sister Marie Therese Imhoff is pictured spoke fondly of was living at Mount Alvernia. Sister Marie Therese Imhoff here in 2005 teaching children at was grateful for the opportunity to join Paul and reunite with her former Mount Alvernia Day Care and Learning pupil, Patrick Meehan. While at lunch with Sister Marie Therese and Paul, Center in Millvale, Pa. Patrick spoke passionately about the influence of his Catholic education and the continued personal experiences with the Sisters of St. Francis over the years. He agreed to make a substantial gift to support sister retirement needs in memory of his wife, Thelma. A Mass for Thelma is being planned for spring 2012. Patrick Meehan, thanks and praise for journeying with us. 26 FRANCISCAN SPIRIT

Former member remains part of the Franciscan family

t Ruth Jarvis and Sister Donna Stephenson have been friends for more than 40 years. Here they work together on the Hearts & Hands Gala planning committee, a fundraiser for the Change A Heart Franciscan Volunteer Program.

The Sisters of St. Francis have been a part of Ruth Jarvis’s life for almost 60 years. She was taught by them at St. Joseph’s Grade School and St. Joseph’s High School in the Mount Oliver neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pa. A sister of St. Francis for seven years, Ruth left amidst the changes that occurred during Vatican II. She pursued a 34-year career in education, using the skills taught to her by the Sisters of St. Francis. Ruth has also been a member of the Hearts & Hands Gala planning committee for the past four years and is a generous donor to the Sisters of St. Francis. “You reach a point in your life when you want to give back.” During her time in formation, Sister Thomasita Heller was Ruth’s novice director. “…I loved her dearly. I would often visit her and when she died I thought: “What can I do to give back?” Ruth started volunteering to help drive sisters to their doctor appointments. “The sisters touched my life, I was a part of their lives, and now it’s time to support them when they need it and I have the time and talent to help. I want to be there for them, they are part of my family.” Ruth Jarvis, thanks and praise for journeying with us.

We Have a Saint! “We have received word from the Vatican that His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI has proclaimed Blessed Marianne Cope to be canonized a saint in the Catholic church…Blessed Marianne was

a woman with a compassionate heart and courageous spirit that led her to do great things in Syracuse as well as Hawaii.” These words of Sister Patricia Burkard, general minister of the congregation, announced the news of Mother Marianne’s canonization at a Dec. 20, 2011 press conference in Syracuse, N.Y. The canonization ceremony will take place in St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome on Oct. 21 of this year.

p Sister Patricia Burkard announces the news of Mother Marianne’s canonization.

Did You Know? The relic of bone fragments of St. Marianne is classified as a first class relic. First class relics are body parts of those declared Blessed or Saint by the Roman Catholic Church. Secondclass relics are items used by the saint. Included would be articles of clothing, a book, a rosary or even a fragment of the saint’s coffin. Third class relics are items, usually pieces of cloth or a holy card, that have been touched to a first or second class relic. The Catholic Church forbids the sale of first or second class relics, which are sacred objects.

For canonization to occur, two miracles attributed to the intercession of an individual, must be proven through the appropriate canonical investigation of medical experts and theologians and affirmed in a decree by the pope. Following the first miracle and the promulgation of beatification the candidate receives the title “blessed.” A second miracle is needed for canonization and follows the same process as that for beatification. With the pope’s proclamation, the individual named “blessed” acquires the title of “saint.” In 1993, the first miracle of healing occurred with Kate Mahoney and led to the eventual beatification of Mother Marianne. At the age of 14, Kate was diagnosed with germ cell ovarian cancer. After her cancer was removed Kate suffered severe reactions and complications during her chemotherapy. While removing massive amounts of fluid from her body, Kate experienced serious hemorrhagic shock p Kate Mahoney visits with Sister Adele followed by a nearly fatal cardiac arrest lasting Bullock at the Jan. 23 St. Marianne Cope feast day liturgy at St. Anthony approximately 25 minutes. She also experienced Convent chapel in Syracuse, N.Y. multiple organ system failure. Intercessory prayer to Mother Marianne began in December 1992 and by the second week of January 1993 the functioning of her organs had begun. By mid-January, all of Kate’s vital functions had returned and today, all of her vital organs are in good condition. In June 2011, the Vatican Medical Board in Rome ruled in favor of a second miracle attributed to the intercession of Mother Marianne. The seven physicians at the Vatican Congregation for Saints’ Causes said there is no medical explanation for the cure of Sharon Smith who had been suffering from an irreversible fatal condition of pancreatitis and an infection that was literally destroying her organs. Her doctors expected her to die and were amazed scientifically at her survival. At the press

conference Sharon said, “I thank the Lord. I’m happy to be Mother Marianne’s vessel to be a saint.” Addressing the media at the press conference, Robert J. Cunningham, bishop of the Diocese of Syracuse, said, “The church, in recognizing Mother Marianne, reminds us that in every age the church raises up men and women outstanding in holiness to be living examples of Christian life. We thank God for the witness of their lives and in a special way we thank God for the witness of Mother Marianne Cope and all that she’s done and meant to so many people.” Mother Marianne led the first group of six sisters from the congregation to the Hawaiian Islands in 1883. Their mission was to care for those afflicted with Hansen’s disease (leprosy). She was the only one of 50 religious leaders to respond positively to an emissary from Hawaii with a request for Catholic sisters to provide health care on the Hawaiian Islands, especially to patients with Hansen’s disease. “I am not afraid of any disease…,” was her rare response to the request. Commenting on Mother Marianne’s virtues, Sister Patricia said, “We believe that the virtues of St. Marianne Cope, as she is now to be known, especially her compassion for the most outcast, her personal dedication to caring for others and her immense charity are virtues that can be examples for our own lives.” For more information on the life and ministry of Mother Marianne as well as information on her shrine and museum in Syracuse, visit saintmariannecope.org.

ec. 18, 2011 marked the 150th anniversary of the Sisters of St. Francis’ arrival in Buffalo, N.Y. Throughout 2011, countless events were held to celebrate the sisters’ incredible 150-year journey of service to God’s people in the Diocese of Buffalo. These words written by Sister Patricia Burkard, general minister, for the closing liturgy and banquet brought the year to a meaningful end: “While we have come a long way from the arrival of our first sisters in Buffalo in 1861 our mission has remained the same — to be women at the service of life and to serve those in need. Our work in Catholic schools and religious education programs, with orphans, the elderly, in health care and parish ministry as well as through social outreach, is our legacy to the people of this diocese. We honor the lives and works of our deceased sisters who ‘went about doing good’ throughout these 150 years and whose memories we hold sacred. Their example of courage, fortitude and perseverance inspires us in our continued service to God’s people. We honor the kindness of all of you who support our way of life and whose generosity allows us to continue our works of mercy and charity. This past year brought us great joy as we celebrated different events and became reacquainted with friends from former years. We have so much for which to be grateful! As we continue into the future, we ask God, through the words of our patron St. Francis of Assisi, to bless you!” “ May the Lord bless you and keep you. May God let his face shine on you, and give you peace today and all days.” ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI
