Maura ALLEN & Jim REY “This Is The West”

Sorrel Sky Gallery hosts a two-person show, “This is the West,” featuring new works from Maura Allen and welcoming Jim Rey, currently represented at Sorrel Sky Durango, to Sorrel Sky Santa Fe. See the West through the eyes of these two distinct artists. Maura Allen portrays the American West with a contemporary, cinematic quality. Jim Rey captures a bygone era, preserving a way of life. Opening reception from 5:00-7:30 pm on June 1, 2018, at the gallery’s downtown location, 125 W Palace Ave. The show will continue throughout the month of June. Maura Allen devotes time each year to travel, visiting various locations, reestablishing her personal connection with the American West. Recently, she spent time in Wyoming and at a private ranch in Northern Denver, discovering and collecting visual lessons for future contemplation. Upon returning to her studio, she transforms these journeys into stunning paintings that embody her beloved West. At this show, Allen introduces several new works of varying sizes and shapes, including a pinwheel circle series with a bold, recurring Western element. Other imagery will include barrel racing cowgirls, as well as Native American themes. “The West we live - and the West of our imagination - is what I paint. Like the great tales of the West, my work is part rugged, part romanticized.” Jim Rey has spent a lifetime living the ranching experience, and close to five decades depicting those experiences with his paintbrush. Turning to his own memories, and continually exploring new ranches and landscape locations, infuses Rey’s work with a tangible authenticity. He strives to visually demonstrate what he cares about, sharing a thought and his own way of looking at things in the final image. The pieces presented at this show will focus on the “Haptic” approach in his work, as he uses his fingers to create a natural line of movement, energy, and flow, all coming from the touch. “Using the touch of my fingers in addition to brush strokes allows me to be empathetic to the subject and results in a painting that is created based on feeling.” Shanan Campbell Wells, owner of Sorrel Sky Gallery looks forward to this show with much anticipation. “Maura and Jim are both so devoted to expressing what they see individually as “the West.” Each approaches their creative processes so differently, with a distinctive style and method. Yet each conveys their deep love and appreciation for their surroundings, what its future and history mean to them, with imagery that clearly states, ‘This is the West.’” 828 Main Ave. | DURANGO, CO | 970.247.3555 W 125 W. “For centuries, the West has represented beginnings not endings, a place where experimentation and the pioneering spirit—no matter your passion—has enough sky to thrive.” Maura Allen portrays the American West—ranching life, cowboys, cowgirls, Native Americans, and the native flora of the landscape—with rich texture, vibrant color and dynamic patterns to achieve a contemporary, cinematic quality that is her signature painting style. With 35+ years as a black and white photographer and two decades as a painter, Allen brings unique vision and skill to her work. To begin her creative process, Allen looks directly into the sun, drawing inspiration from a stark silhouette and obscured details. She uses wood, steel, and glass as her surfaces. Allen’s work is included in private, corporate and museum collections nationwide and has been shown in major exhibitions at the Tucson Museum of Art, Old West Museum, Desert Caballeros Western Museum and Pearce Museum. Her painting “Belvidere” was selected as the official Cheyenne Frontier Days 2016 poster image, the first time a cowgirl image will be featured in the rodeo’s century-long history. Her work is featured regularly in top art publications, including a cover feature in Southwest Art Magazine in 2014.

J im REY

PAINTER “I’ve seen what hard work and diligence does, both in art and on the range.” Born and raised in northern California, Jim Rey’s keen interest in ranch life was fueled by his grandfather and uncle, both cattle ranchers. Although his subject matter primarily focuses on the equine, Rey often paints the cowboy and the ranching experience. Spending time at various ranches and landscape locations to paint and photograph provides an authenticity that the viewer can feel. He strives to take a thought and bring his own way of looking at things into a final image, demonstrating visually what he cares about. However, the common denominator in all his work is his lifelong love of the horse. Rey has had the good fortune to have been a professional painter for over 45 years. Prior to that, he was an illustrator and a graphic arts director, in both Hollywood and the San Francisco Bay Area. His works are frequently exhibited in museums, and several now hang in their permanent collections. He has been featured in most major art magazines and has been commissioned by Bantam Books for Louis L’Amour short story collections and novel, as well as novel versions of the TV show Bonanza. His paintings are collected nationally and internationally, with pieces residing for a time in the United States Embassy in the Netherlands. Jim and his wife, Sharon, raised their five children outside Durango, Colorado, where they continue to reside.
