Development and Roll-out of a Process to Improve the Quality of Systems Development Improved quality: revision of ingrained and error-prone approaches and subsequent roll-out of enhanced processes. A team of SOPHISTs lastingly improved the processes applied during system development and invigorated a health insurance company through fresh incentives.

The CSS Versicherung AG has been involved with health management for more than 100 years and is currently under way to becoming Switzerland‘s top health insurance company. The company headquarters in Lucerne develop products designed to offer professional health care, close coverage gaps and minimize the personal risk involved with sickness. Because of this strong growth and the use of new technologies, the expectations of employees and customers regarding the quality of the IT systems in use are rising. To meet these challenges, project management posed the following questions: ►► ►► ►►

In what ways must the system development process change to guarantee the develop ment of IT systems of the highest quality? Which departments must be created or reorganized to support a revised develop ment process? What tools and methods must these departments utilize?

Customer benefit:

►► Having long years of experience in consulting and systems development, the SOPHIST-team was able to carry through the analysis and conception pragmatically and in a cost-efficient manner for the client. ►► The CSS Versicherungs AG values the matter-of-fact approach of the SOPHIST consultants and their eye for feasible solutions. ►► The client was able to significantly improve the quality of its system development and now disposes of well-trained employees in this domain.

SOPHIST analyzed the current situation and compiled a concept containing the following elements: ►► ►► ►► ►►

Definition of the methods to be used and the artifacts to be assembled during business and system analysis Roll-out of a version and configuration management process which includes progress monitoring Definition of a unified change management process to make the causes and effects of changes traceable and transparent Delineation of a migration concept to facilitate the smooth transition to the newly developed IT systems

Due to a close collaboration with CSS employees, the SOPHIST team was able to generate a high level of acceptance for the new processes. During these activities, the knowhow of the CSS employees was constantly built up, enabling them to continue improving the processes after the termination of the project.
