PRACTICE POLICY Practices are held at the Sam Viersen Center, directly north and across the street (Imhoff) from the Lloyd Noble Center. Practices are typically open to media. However, those who wish to attend must obtain clearance through Leslie Koch in the Athletics Communications Office prior to the start of practice. Practice generally runs from noon to 4 p.m. The best time to conduct interviews is immediately following practice. CREDENTIAL REQUESTS Media credentials for home contests at the Lloyd Noble Center should be requested no later than one day prior to the event. Credentials will be issued to working media only. All requests should be directed to Leslie Koch in the Athletics Communications Office at (405) 325-8413 or by e-mail to lesali@ou.edu. SAM VIERSEN CENTER A state-of-the-art 7,000 square-foot addition and a complete overhaul of the existing Sam Viersen Gymnastics Center was finalized in the spring of 2010, ensuring that the home of Oklahoma Gymnastics remains one of the nation’s premier collegiate training facilities. Funded entirely by private donations without the use of any state or university appropriated funds, the project included a complete renovation of the current gym, locker rooms, sports medicine training rooms and the awards recognition room. A new storage area, a reconfiguration of foam and resi pits and an outdoor patio also highlight the renovation. Parking was also added on the North end of the facility. Along with the existing structure that bared its name, the Viersen Family Foundation provided an additional commitment to help fund the latest renovation. “Oklahoma’s commitment to the Sam Viersen facility project enhances what is already an amazing experience for our student-athletes,” said OU women’s gymnastics head coach K.J. Kindler. One of only a handful of freestanding, co-ed college gyms in the country, the Sam Viersen Gymnastics Center is located just north of the Lloyd Noble Center.

SPORTS MEDICINE AND OKLAHOMA ATHLETICS The Oklahoma Athletics Department feels a strong responsibility to help its athletes reach and maintain their optimum health and achieve conditioning goals. For this reason, OU has developed excellent training and conditioning programs to lessen the possibility of injuries. However, should injuries occur, the department is committed to a comprehensive rehabilitation program.

Complete athletically-related medical services are provided to Oklahoma student-athletes by team physicians and OU’s certified athletic trainers. The University of Oklahoma obtains the services of the best medical consultants available.

The Sooner training room is equipped to perform isokinetic joint evaluation for preventive medicine and for post-injury rehabilitation. The therapy room is supplied with the latest modalities on the market.

The base of operation for the Sooners’ medical care is the state-of-the-art Henry J. Freede, M.D. Sports Medicine Center in the Barry Switzer Center. The 10,000-square-foot sports medicine facility within the Barry Switzer Center treats athletes from all 21 sports, ensuring the best

Head athletic trainer Scott Anderson says the addition to the Barry Switzer Center has allowed the university to upgrade to a new edition of rehabilitation equipment that can best benefit the student-athletes.

“The addition of space is the greatest benefit,” says Anderson.“This space allows for dedicated rehabilitation and consultation to the athletes. An option with the facility is the water rehabilitation area. The athlete stands in a pool of water that

is adjusted to his or her own physical needs. Cameras are then placed where physicians can monitor the progress made by the athlete on his or her road to recovery.” A total team effort is the key to OU’s efficiency in preventing, treating and rehabilitating injuries sustained by student-athletes. These measures keep Sooner athletes at their highest level of performance as they compete for championships. “Sports medicine is a team effort,” says Anderson. “The stated goal of athletic training at Oklahoma is, first of all, care for the student-athletes, thereby granting our sports a competitive advantage and ultimately greater esteem for the entire program. “To that end we are blessed with a full complement of self-sacrificing medical professionals working on a regular basis with our athletic training staff.”

Sooner student-athletes are exposed to life outside of sports and school work with opportunities to serve and help others.

The Student Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) is a committee made up of student-athletes from all 21 intercollegiate athletic teams at the University of Oklahoma. The group coordinates community service programs for the Sooners each month.

“I want our student-athletes to learn through their experience here,” says Coale,“how important it is to volunteer to be a part of whatever community they decide to reside in when their playing days are over.” Oklahoma’s student-athletes recognize that wearing the Crimson and Cream means representing a popular sports program and themselves as individuals. They are encouraged to respond to a public that adores them, while learning important lessons about making a positive impact in the lives of others and in the community in which they live.

SOONERS IN THE COMMUNITY

Oklahoma women’s basketball teams have been extremely active in the community since head coach Sherri Coale’s arrival in 1996. In addition to projects with the United Way, Coaches vs. Cancer, Mission of Hope for Haiti and Food and Shelter for Friends, Coale implemented the Sooner Big Sis Program which places women’s basketball players at elementary schools in Norman to serve as mentors and teachers’ aides.

Under Kindler, 32 gymnasts have been named Academic All-Big 12. During the 2010-11 academic year, the OU gymnasts volunteered with Race for the Cure, Special Spectators, the J.D. McCarty Center and the Children’s Miracle Network.

OU’s Natalie Ratcliff was the only gymnast in the Big 12 to finish the 2010-2011 academic year with a perfect 4.0 GPA.

Created by the Oklahoma Territorial Legislature in 1890, the University of Oklahoma is a doctoral degree-granting research university serving the educational, cultural, economic and health-care needs of the state, region and nation. The Norman campus serves as home to all of the university’s academic programs except health-related fields. The OU Health Sciences Center, which is located in Oklahoma City, is one of only four comprehensive academic health centers in the nation with seven professional colleges. Both the Norman and Health Sciences Center colleges offer programs at the Schusterman Center, the site of OU-Tulsa. OU enrolls more than 30,000 students, has more than 2,400 full-time faculty members, and has 20 colleges offering 163 majors at the baccalaureate level, 166 majors at the master’s level, 81 majors at the doctoral level, 27 majors at the doctoral professional level, and 26 graduate certificates. PRENTICE GAUTT ACADEMIC CENTER A modern, state-of-the-art academic support facility that promotes excellence.

The Prentice Gautt Academic Center provides student-athletes with a modern, state-ofthe-art academic support facility that promotes excellence. The environment encourages a collaboration between staff members and student-athletes. In addition, it is highly conducive to learning in all areas of students’ academic endeavors and features eight learning centers. Located on the second and third floors in the north end of Gaylord Family - Oklahoma Memorial Stadium, the Academic Center houses Academic Counseling Offices, Computer Center, Learning and Skill Development Centers for reading, study skills, math, foreign languages, career, communication, learning enhancement and study areas.

ACADEMIC ADVISING Academic Advising Services, considered a campus-advising unit, is conveniently located within the center. The athletics department employs seven professional full-time counselors who are here to help student-athletes through the educational process. It is important that student-athletes utilize their services. They will assist student-athletes with planning their class schedule and deciding on a degree program that will suit their needs. In addition, they can help student-athletes with career planning, setting academic goals, academic support strategies and personal counseling.

KERR CAREER CENTER Whether student-athletes are freshmen, sophomores, juniors, seniors or alumni, they will benefit from the services of the Kerr Sooner Career Center. It provides a system of services that educates and guides students through the career development process. The Career Center is dedicated to helping student-athletes make the transition from college to career by developing an individualized career plan. Opportunities are provided for student-athletes to gain the knowledge and skills necessary for resume writing and interviewing techniques. The center is also linked to the OU Career Services on campus, which offers effective job-hunting skills, online resume services and training and career resources.

KERR FOUNDATION COMPUTER CENTER In the 21st century, computers have become an integral part of the learning experience. Students need access to computers and their resources almost daily. The Athletics Department provides each student with the equipment and support necessary to succeed. The computer center has more than 200 computers, and is available exclusively to OU’s student-athletes. This ensures that they will never go without computer access. Laptop computers are available for checkout when the Computer Center is closed. The laptop program is very important in helping OU’s student-athletes stay on top of their schoolwork when traveling. Group training is available for all new studentathletes during the first week of supervised study. This helps familiarize each studentathlete with the department’s resources and procedures. Individual training sessions are available to each student upon request and lab technicians are always on hand to help. The Athletic Computer Center has been a model for other universities around the country. Upgrades are scheduled annually, along with a face lift for the entire facility. A deep commitment from the Athletics Department ensures that the excellence in the Computer Center will continue for a long time.

COMMUNICATIONS CENTER The academic center focuses on developing communication and public speaking skills for student-athletes. This state of the art center, coordinated by a broadcast professional, offers training to enhance communication skills in order to prepare student-athletes for media interaction as well as personal and professional interactions.

Kerr Foundation Foreign Language Center To assist student-athletes in speaking, listening, reading and writing in other languages, the Kerr Foundation Foreign Language Center offers a multi-media environment that provides instruction in all foreign languages and in English as a second language. On an individual basis, student-athletes have the option of working with computers, audiovisual equipment and tutors in order to enhance their language experience.

LEARNING ENHANCEMENT CENTER Freshman and transfer student-athletes are provided a Learning Specialist to help with the transition to the university setting. The program is designed to help student-athletes develop useful study techniques, improve problem solving strategies and emphasize the importance of time management.

MATH CENTER If performing math functions is a problem, the solution is the Math Center. As a supplement to class instruction, the Math Center provides all levels of math computations, concepts and problems to help student-athletes review course material and offers personal and group tutoring sessions.

READING AND STUDY SKILLS CENTER If student-athletes have trouble with assigned textbook readings or studying, the Reading and Study Skills Center can help. It provides student-athletes with college reading strategies and individualized instruction to help plan, implement, monitor and evaluate reading assignments. The University of Oklahoma has a long and storied history. The rich tradition has given birth to some of the most recognized pageantry in all of college athletics. Here is a look at the origin of some of the elements that create the wonderful atmosphere so unique to OU:

One of the most recognizable college fight songs in the country, Boomer Sooner immediately evokes enthusiasm from OU fans and sends chills down the spines of those who dare to oppose them.

The Sooner Schooner is a Conestoga, or covered wagon, reminiscent of the mode of travel used by pioneers who settled Oklahoma. The Schooner is powered by matching white ponies named Boomer and Sooner, and it ventures onto Owen Field in a triumphant victory ride after OU scores. Although the Schooner was introduced in 1964, it did not become the official mascot until 1980. The Schooner is well-recognized by college athletics fans across the country and makes regular appearances at university functions.

SOONERS College sports fans are hard-pressed to find a nickname that is as unique and as tied in to a state’s history as a Sooner. The University of Oklahoma is the only school known as Sooners and those who claim that they are Sooners say it with pride. The Oklahoma Territory opened with the Land Run of 1889. Settlers from across the globe, seeking free land, made their way to the prairies of the plains to stake their claim. One of the few rules to claiming a lot of land was that all participants were to start at the same time, on the boom of a cannon. All settlers who started then were labeled as “Boomers” and the ones who went early were called “Sooners.” OU athletic teams were called either Rough Riders or Boomers for 10 years before the current Sooner nickname emerged in 1908. The university actually derived its name from a pep club called “The Sooner Rooters.” The success of University of Oklahoma athletics teams over the years has made the nickname synonymous with winning.

In 1905, Arthur M. Alden, a student in history and physiology whose father was a Norman jeweler, wrote the lyrics to the fight song, borrowing the tune from Yale University’s Boola Boola but improvising the words. A year later, an addition was made to it from North Carolina’s I’m a Tarheel Born and the two combined to form today’s university fight song. Though the tune was first made known by Yale, the everlasting success of Sooner squads has taken the melody of Boomer Sooner to national popularity. During OU football and baseball games from 19151928, Mex the Dog wore a red sweater with a letter “O” on the side. Mex died of old age on April 30, 1928, and he was so popular among students and faculty that the university closed for his funeral and procession on May 2, 1928. In the fall of 2005, the OU Athletics Deparment introduced costumed mascots. The new characters will act as an extension of the Sooner Schooner and its horses to be enjoyed by fans -- especially children -- at all OU athletics contests. The costumes feature traditional collegiate gear as part of their regular uniform, but will don team uniforms for football and men’s and women’s basketball. They were voted “Most Collegiate” by the Universal Cheerleading Association (UCA).

PRIDE OF OKLAHOMA

OU CHANT

In the fall of 1895, Miss May Overstreet, the only woman on the faculty, was asked to chair a committee to select the colors of the university. The committee decided the colors should be crimson and cream and an elaborate display of the colors was draped above a platform before the student body.

The Pride of Oklahoma Marching Band has been supporting Sooner Spirit for more than a century. Unlike many other college bands, which began as military drill units, the Pride of Oklahoma had its beginnings as a pep band.

The OU Chant is a loyalty song that is sung before every home football game, before and after every men’s and women’s basketball games and at the end of many athletic and university functions.

The student body approved with great enthusiasm and immediately pennants, banners, badges and decorations of every description appeared on the streets, in the windows, at chapel, in classrooms, and all public places; however, local merchants could not supply the demand. Even though the school colors have evolved to red and white over the years, you can ask any self-respecting Sooner what the colors are and they will proudly announce “Crimson and Cream.” On gamedays, a sea of crimson rolls through OU’s home venues and all Sooners are urged to wear the official colors to show the rest of the country what school spirit and Sooner Pride is all about.

In the early years of the 1900s, both townspeople of Norman and students of OU participated in a band that played for football games. Professor John Merrill started the first band in 1901, which was composed mostly of townspeople and disbanded after each football season. Lloyd Curtis, a cornetist, founded the first continuous student band in 1904. Today, the 300-member Pride of Oklahoma has members representing virtually every college and major on campus. The Pride of Oklahoma stands for excellence in musicianship, academics, school spirit, and commitment to our role in the surrounding community. Boomer Sooner rings out at the end of each rehearsal, and that song is the defining element of the University of Oklahoma. Maybe that is why Sooner fans love the band so much. Not much can compare to the first “gogo” at a football game when the Pride of Oklahoma marches the interlocking OU down the field playing Boomer Sooner.

Every fan who wears the official colors, each current student and student-athlete and all OU alumni are encouraged to stand and raise one finger in the air during the playing of the Chant -- a symbolic gesture that shows those who do not know what it means to be a Sooner, the greatness of the university and the unity between all Sooners. The Chant was written in 1936 by Jessie Lone Clarkson Gilkey, who directed the OU girl’s glee club from 1936 to 1938 and was voted Outstanding Faculty Woman in 1937. NORMAN WAS RECENTLY NAMED NO. 6 OF AMERICA’S BEST PLACES TO LIVE AMONG CITIES WITH A POPULATION OF 50,000-300,000.

Norman is an ever-changing city of nearly 100,000 residents. Located in the heart of the state, it has grown to become the third largest city in Oklahoma. Despite its continuous growth, it has maintained the spirit and serenity of a small close-knit community. Since the Oklahoma landrush of 1889, Norman has grown into a popular and smart city. The spirit of Norman and its citizens is unwavering and uncompromising. While other towns were clamoring to become the state capital, Norman residents desired to have the first state university. When the first OU president got off the train and saw a prairie, he saw opportunity.

As home to the state’s premier educational institution, Norman boasts an excellent quality of life and is a city that thrives on and celebrates the diversity of its community. Legendary University of Oklahoma football coach Barry Switzer called Norman “a university town with a championship spirit.” Norman continually exhibits its love for sports by hosting numerous local and national athletic events. In the last five years alone, Norman has served as host of the NCAA Men’s Gymnastics Championship, an NCAA men’s golf regional, NCAA softball regionals, NCAA men’s and women’s gymnastics regionals, NCAA women’s tennis regionals, NCAA track and field regional and the NCAA women’s basketball regionals. In addition, the Big 12 Conference Men’s and Women’s Tennis, Track and Field, Wrestling, Women’s Golf, and Women’s Gymnastics Championships were held in Norman. Cultural activities are unlimited in Norman, making it the ideal backdrop for the University of Oklahoma. As home to people of all ethnic and educational backgrounds, the city has something to offer everyone. Norman is home to a variety of enriching events and attractions, including the Sooner Theater, which hosts a series of entertaining theatrical performances produced by locally-based talent and touring companies.

The Medieval Fair has become a springtime tradition in Norman as people from around the country converge on the city for one weekend each April to partake in a fascinating look back in time. Each year, an area park is transformed into a festival of sights, sounds and tastes straight from the Middle Ages. Knights joust, jesters entertain and story tellers spin tales of a magical time in history. The $44 million Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History, a state-of-the-art facility designed to display a collection of historical and natural science items that trace the southwest’s development since prehistoric times, opened in May 2000. History buffs will also enjoy the Cleveland Country Historical House which holds exhibits relating to the development of this area of the state. For art enthusiasts, the Fred Jones Jr. Memorial Art Center houses permanent collections, nationally and world-renowned traveling exhibits as well as a yearly student art show. The museum has recently added the Weitzenhoffer Collection of French Impressionist paintings -- the single most important gift of art ever given to a U.S. public university. Maintaining a progressive approach to the future while remembering its history, Norman continues to be a well-balanced community, proud to be the home of the University of Oklahoma.

OKLAHOMA CITY

Oklahoma City, the capital of Oklahoma, is located just 18 miles from the Norman campus. It was the first city settled in the Land Run of 1889 because of its position as the center of the state. It is because of this central location that Oklahoma City has become known as the home of America’s Western heritage. Whether adventure, history, culture or sports, Oklahoma City offers a variety of attractions and activities different from any other place in the country. Oklahoma City was born on the afternoon of April 22, 1889, when the central portion of what is now Oklahoma was opened to settlement by presidential proclamation. Thousands crossed the borders of “unassigned lands” at the sound of gunfire at high noon. Never before or since has such a “run” occurred anywhere on the earth. By the time the dust had settled on that historic day, many people had staked their claim at “Oklahoma Station,” an area which was destined to become Oklahoma City, a leading city in America. In 1911,

Oklahoma City officially became the capital after a statewide election moved the state seal from Guthrie. Oklahoma City has become a haven for exciting sports action. It is home of an NBA team, two semiprofessional sports teams and the host of the NCAA Women College Softball World Series and Big 12 Softball Championship. The Oklahoma RedHawks, 1996 American Association champions (then named the Oklahoma City 89ers), are the Triple-A baseball affiliate of the Texas Rangers. The team plays in the 13,066-seat AT&T Bricktown Ballpark, one of the plushest venues in all of minor league sports. The ballpark served as host to a 2004 NCAA baseball regional and the 2005, 2006, 2007 and 208 Big 12 Baseball Championships.

Hockey mania runs rampant with the recent success of the Central Hockey League’s Oklahoma City Blazers. The Blazers won the CHL crown in 1996 and are yearly one of the league’s best teams. In addition, the city has hosted numerous PGA and Senior PGA Tour events.

ONE HUNDRED WINS Head coach K.J. Kindler recorded her 100th win at OU on Jan. 23, 2011, with a 196.175-193.050 win over TWU at Kitty Magee Arena in Denton, Texas. OU won the team title and individual title on all four events against TWU, and tied its own season-high team score of 196.175 (previously set at N.C. State on Jan. 14, 2011). Freshman Madison Mooring took home the beam title after becoming the first freshman in the NCAA to score a 9.95 in 2011.

ANOTHER PERFECT SEASON OU clinched its third perfect regular season in four years on March 11, 2011, with its 196.875-194.800 win over Michigan State on senior night. OU finished the 2011 regular season as the only unbeaten team in the NCAA, extending its nation-leading regular season win streak to 29 wins. Under Kindler, OU is 71-6 during the regular season.

CONFERENCE LEADERS OU earned a conference-best nine spots on the 2011 All-Big 12 Gymnastics Team announced on March 16, 2011. Five gymnasts (Megan Ferguson - bars, beam, floor; Natasha Kelley, - bars, beam; Kayla Nowak - floor; Taylor Spears - beam; and Sara Stone - vault, floor) earned OU’s nine spots on the team. The 2011 season was the fourth straight year that OU led the Big 12 in All-Big 12 selections.

THREE BIG 12 CHAMPIONS Three Sooners earned Big 12 titles on March 19, 2011. Megan Ferguson and Natasha Kelley shared the beam title with scores of 9.925, while Kayla Nowak split the floor title with Nebraskaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Erin Davis with a 9.9 on the event. OU finished in second as a team behind Nebraska by just .275 after counting a fall on bars. The Sooners posted a 49.450 on beam, just .225 shy of the programâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s highest score on the apparatus.

SUPER SIX BOUND OU advanced to its second straight NCAA Super Six Team Finals after winning the first semifinal session with a score of 196.775 on April 15, 2011. OU posted its program-best score in an NCAA semifinal, finishing ahead of No. 2 UCLA, No. 6 Michigan, No. 10 Arkansas, No. 7 Georgia and No. 11 Illinois to win the programâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first NCAA semifinal. OU was the only team out of all 12 NCAA Championship participants to score above a 49.000 on beam during semifinals.

BACK IT UP The Sooners finished in third place at the NCAA Super Six on April 16, 2011, their second straight top-three finish at the national championship. OU posted a 197.250, trailing just Alabama (197.650) and UCLA (197.375). OU tied its Super Six score from 2010 with the 197.250, its second-highest postseason score in program history. The Sooners hit 48 of 48 routines at NCAA Championships, the only team out of the 12 participants to do so.

Oklahoma enters the 2012 season after back-to-back top three finishes at the NCAA Super Six team finals in 2010 and 2011. The Sooners have quickly become one of the nation’s elite women’s gymnastics programs and hope to prove once again that OU is the real deal, a national title contender.

Headlining OU’s returnees are five-time All-American Megan Ferguson, two-time All-American Kayla Nowak and All-Americans Brie Olson and Sara Stone. Ferguson, Nowak Olson and Stone provide veteran leadership and experience that will be vital for the young Sooners.

OU starts the 2012 season ranked No. 4 in the GymInfo OU will be tested in 2012 with the loss of All-American Natapreseason coaches poll, behind No. 1 UCLA, No. 2 Alabama and sha Kelley and a challenging schedule. The Sooners face No. 1 UCLA, No. 2 Alabama, No. 6 Nebraska, No. 7 Oregon State, No. 10 Michigan, No. 11 Arkansas, No. 18 Ohio State, No. 22 Minnesota, No. 23 Kentucky and No. 24 Iowa State. OU aims for its ninth strraight NCAA Championship appearance beginning Jan. 7, in Lexington, Ky., as the Sooners take on No. 23 Kentucky, Bowling Green and Wisconsin-Oshkosh for “Excite Night at the Kentucky Classic.”

VAULT The Sooners return two All-Americans on vault and a total of four athletes who contributed in the 2011 lineup. Stone, sophomore Madison Mooring, junior Brie Olson and Nowak will provide a solid base for an overall young lineup. “With some unexpected losses on this event, this is the area where we expect the athletes, veterans and newcomers, to step up,” head coach K.J. Kindler said.“There will definitely be a strong underclassman influence on this event. We are approximately eight athletes deep on vault and the lineup is likely to fluctuate during the course of the season.” The 2011 NCAA Vault runner-up, Mooring, highlights the vault squad with two different 10.0 valued vaults. Stone has held the anchor position for two seasons and has secured that spot once again with her dynamic Yurchenko full. Olson, who has two years of experience, and Nowak both boast career-highs of 9.9 on the apparatus. Nowak competed on vault just three times in 2011, but will be heavily relied on with the loss of Kelley.

BARS “This event has seen the greatest ‘upswing’ for the Sooners,” Kindler said.“Something that makes our team stand out on this event is the variety of elements you will see from our athletes. They perform different release moves such as Shaposhnakovas, tkatchevs, deltchevs, piked and straddled jaegers. “Their dismounts include double fronts, double layouts, full twisting double layouts and combination work into double tucks. It is rare to see that kind of diversity on one team. Under the leadership of our All-Americans, this lineup should be one of our most impressive.” OU returns three All-Americans and six total athletes with competitive experience and adds three new routines to the event for a very seasoned and deep squad. In addition to bar All-Americans Ferguson, Olson and Nowak, are three experienced Sooners including Spears, Ward and senior Candace Cindell. Ward is expected to hold the all-important first position in the 2012 bar lineup. After fainting before warm-ups at NCAA Championships, Ward stepped up and delivered a beautiful routine in the leadoff spot. Spears displays a beautiful line and provides momentum for the squad. Cindell returns after debuting on the apparatus last season and gaining practice either in the lineup or as alternate. Adding depth to the event will be three of OU’s five newcomers; Brewer, Clark and sophomore Lauren Smith. The two freshmen, Brewer and Clark, boast “E” valued dismounts and difficult and unique release sequences. Smith joined the Sooners as a transfer from the Texas Tech club program. Since her arrival, Smith has refined her skills including two “D” release skills and an “E” level dismount.

BEAM At the 2011 NCAA Championships, the Sooners posted the top beam score in both the semifinal and Super Six sessions. OU was the only team out of the 12 participants to score above a 49.000 on the apparatus on the first night of competition. The Sooners lose just two routines from the 2011 lineup. “Beam has traditionally been a strong event for us and this year is no exception,” Kindler said.“We feel that our athletes will perform some of the most unique choreography and difficult skills and combinations in the NCAA. If there is one phrase to describe this squad, it would be ‘poised and confident’. They compete beam like other athletes like to perform floor routines, without limits.” Oklahoma is led by the extraordinary foursome of Ferguson (All-American and Big 12 Co-Champion), Nowak (All-American), Mooring and Spears. Ferguson is mesmerizing on this event and will anchor the lineup. As the squad starter, Nowak is an absolute rock for the Sooners with a hit percentage of 95 percent in competition since her arrival. Mooring is elegant and captivating while Spears shows great diversity,“E” level skills and concludes with a dynamic dismount. Also expected to make key contributions on beam are Brewer, Clark and Stone. “Erica and Rebecca are both amazing on this event,” Kindler said.“Rebecca’s experience at the elite level allows her to be calm, elegant and poised as she performs. Erica shows grit and aggressiveness. They have completely different styles, but the result is the same. Sara saw limited action last season but with the addition of an upgraded flight series, she will likely be a staple in this lineup.” Sophomore transfer Lara Albright, Cindell, Olson and freshman Haley Sorenson provide additional depth on the apparatus. All four are prepared and ready to see the competition floor.

FLOOR The Sooners return 100 percent of their floor lineup from 2011. This event displays a great deal of depth and each athlete has pushed the envelope to increase difficulty in both dance and tumbling components in preseason practice. “Artistry and execution are the key components to our floor routines,” Kindler said.“The squad is hitting a high note with increased difficulty in their tumbling as well. Our routine composition is unique to each individual and pure enjoyment to watch. The key words are dynamic and entertaining.” Three influential veterans will anchor the floor squad, Nowak, Ferguson and Stone. These athletes have 2-3 years of experience will have an enormous impact on the event while all three will debut new tumbling this season. “Kayla will perform to a percussion-based piece and will dazzle with her character induced theatrics,” Kindler said. “Megan is her spunky self as she moves with seemingly

effortless energy across the floor. Sara will bring the drama as her routine focusses on long, strong and detailed movements. “Brie Olson will undoubtedly be counted on by the Sooners with a tango-inspired routine with extraordinary pizazz that shows dynamic tumbling.” Olson, Albright, Brewer, Spears, Mooring and Ward round out the top nine on floor for OU. “Erica (Brewer) is a tiny explosion of powerful tumbling and endurance out on the floor,” Kindler said.“Lara (Albright) grabs your attention immediately and her tumbling is clean as a whistle. Taylor (Spears) has upgraded her tumbling passes while Hayden (Ward) and Madison (Mooring) will continue to provide depth to this squad.”

Since her hire in 2007, K.J. Kindler has led the Sooners to five straight NCAA Championship appearances and back-to-back top three finishes at the NCAA Super Six in 2010 and 2011. In 2011, Kindler took OU to its second straight NCAA Super Six appearance as the Sooners finished in third place with a program-record 11 All-Americans. OU was the only team out of the 12 NCAA Championship participants to hit 48 of 48 routines and score above a 49.000 on beam on both days of competition. Kindler’s 2010 squad finished a program-best second place behind national champion UCLA in OU’s first ever Super Six berth. With Kindler, OU has won three straight Big 12 titles (2008, 2009 and 2010), two regional titles (2010 and 2011) and won its first ever NCAA Semifinal in 2011.

Kindler is the only coach in NCAA history to lead two separate programs to the NCAA Super Six (Iowa State – 2006, Oklahoma – 2010 and 2011). On Jan. 23, 2011, Kindler collected her 100th win with the OU program as the Sooners defeated TWU, 196.175-193.050. Under Kindler, OU is a combined 124-39-2, 42-2 at home and 71-6 during the regular season. Kindler is a two-time National Coach of the Year award winner (2010 & 2005), four time Regional Coach of the Year (2004, 2006, 2010 & 2011)and has been named Big 12 Coach of the Year five times (2004, 2005, 2006, 2008 and 2010).

Under Kindler, OU has broken countless records including the program’s first-ever No. 1 ranking in 2010, OU’s first win over a No. 1 team in 2010, most wins in a season with 30 in 2011, highest postseason score with a 197.350 at the 2011 NCAA Norman Regional and a program-best 11 All-American honors in 2011. The Sooners have gone undefeated in three of the last four seasons under Kindler’s guidance and currently own the nation’s longest regular-season win streak at 29.

In her 10 years as a head coach between Iowa State and Oklahoma, Kindler has coached 43 All-Americans, 31 NCAA Individual Event Qualifiers and 31 Big 12 Champions. Always emphasizing academics, Kindlerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s squads have regularly placed its gymnasts on the Big 12 All-Academic teams and the NACGC All-Academic squads. In her five seasons in Norman, OU has had 32 gymnasts named Academic All-Big 12 and 31 athletes named National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches All-American Scholar Athletes. As head coach at ISU from 2001-2006, Kindler coached eight regional event champions, 11 NCAA individual championship qualifiers and 18 Big 12 champions (three all-arounders). Kindler, an Iowa State graduate, joined the Cyclone staff as an assistant coach in 1992. As an ISU gymnast, she was a three-time MVP for the Cyclones and runner-up in the all-around at the 1992 Big Eight Conference Championship. She was the schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first individual NCAA Regional qualifier, competing three times in the postseason meet. Kindler hails from Lake Elmo, Minn., and trained under Mary Jane Olsen at Hamline University in St. Paul. In high school, she moved to Connecticut and trained under Frank and Laurie DeFrancesco at Arena Academy in Stamford and Walter Hawkes at Wilton High School. Kindler is married to OU assistant coach Lou Ball. The couple has two daughters, Maggie and Adelade.

Assistant coach Lou Ball enters his sixth season with Oklahoma womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s gymnastics as the primary coach on vault and co-coach on uneven bars. Ball shared the honor of being the 2011 South Central Region Coach of the Year with fellow OU assistant coach Tom Haley. The duo helped lead the Sooners to back-to-back Super Six appearances in 2010 and 2011 and two consecutive top-three finishes. In 2011, Ball coached OU to its third undefeated regular season in four years and its eighth straight NCAA Championships appearance. As the vault coach, Ball helped OU freshman Madison Mooring to be a first-team All-American and the NCAA Runner-Up on the apparatus. Ball also led Sara Stone to a top 10 national ranking and second-team All-America status.

Ball’s vault team won a total of 12 event team titles in 2011 while an OU gymnast won the individual vault title 14 times. Ball and Haley coached three OU gymnasts to All-America honors on bars, including two first-teamers. OU won a total of 11 team bar titles and 12 individual bar titles. Haley shared the 2011 award for South Central Region Assistant Coach of the Year with fellow OU assistant coach Lou Ball. From 2002-2003, he was the team coach for Level 4 Elite at the Gwinnett Gymnastics Center near Atlanta, Ga. At GGC, he coached two Region 8 Level 10 all-around champions, as well as a 2003 Championships of the USA junior international elite qualifying gymnast. Haley served as the head coach and program director of the `Bama Bounders club program at the University of Alabama from 1996-2002 while serving as a volunteer assistant coach for the national powerhouse Alabama womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s gymnastics team in 2000 and 2001. Haley is married to volunteer assistant coach Kelli Haley.

Kelli Haley enters her third year as the volunteer assistant coach of the Oklahoma women’s gymnastics program. The wife of Oklahoma assistant Tom Haley, Kelli was a first-team All-American on beam at Iowa State in 2000. Haley placed second in the all-around in her freshman season at the inaugural Big 12 Championship in Norman. A two-time Big 12 beam champion (1998,1999), Haley lettered for the Cyclones from 1997-2000. Haley scored a 9.95 on beam on two occasions during her illustrious career, sharing the program record with four other ISU gymnasts. Haley and teammate Betsy Hamm were the first of five Cyclone

Cappuzzo earned her bachelor’s degree in athletic training from West Virginia University and obtained a master of arts degree in health studies/sports medicine health care from the University of Alabama where she served as the

Kristin Smith starts her second season as OU women’s gymnastics’ graduate assistant in 2012. The Oklahoma City native graduated in the spring of 2010 after helping lead the Sooners to a program-best, second place finish following the program’s first Super Six appearance.

Smith, who earned a bachelor’s degree in human relations in May of 2010, assists with all general operations for the OU women’s gymnastics team.

Smith was one of five seniors from the 2010 squad that saw OU win three-straight Big 12 Championships, four-straight NCAA Championships appearances and one regional title.

Smith is in her second year of working toward a master’s degree in Adult and Higher Education with an emphasis in Intercollegiate Athletics Administration.

Hollie Vise enters her second season as the team manager for OU women’s gymnastics after concluding her eligibility with the team in the spring of 2010. Vise finished her career as one of the most decorated gymnasts in OU history. Vise was the 2010 NCAA Runner-Up on both bars and floor, was named AllAmerican on bars, beam and floor and collected 22 individual event titles, three conference event titles, and one regional event title on the way. She was also named Big 12 Sportsperson of the Year in 2010, an award given for athletics and community service success.

lindy ROBERTS

Prior to her OU career, Vise was the 2003 World Champion on bars and led the U.S. National team to team title. Vise was a member of the U.S. National Team for six years and was a three-time National Champion on bars and beam. Vise is currently working toward a master’s degree in Adult and Higher Education with an emphasis in Intercollegiate Athletics Administration. The Dallas native graduated in the spring of 2010 with a bachelor’s degree in human relations.

SPORT ADMINISTRATOR THIRD SEASON

Beginning her third season as a sport administrator with the men’s and women’s gymnastics squads is Lindy Roberts. Roberts had served as Director of Event Management at OU for the past six years and was recently promoted to Associate Athletics Director for Event Management. Her job duties include overseeing all aspects of events management and facilities for all 21 OU sports, while also serving as liaison and tournament director for all Big 12 and NCAA Championships hosted by the Sooners.

Roberts received her undergraduate degree in kinesiology from the University of Central Oklahoma in 1999 and earned a graduate degree in education from the University of Central Oklahoma in 2002. A member of the OU Athletics Department since August of 2000, Roberts worked with the women’s basketball team for one season before joining the administrative side of athletics.

Dr. Ted Boehm enters his third season as the primary care physician for women’s gymnastics. Boehm works as a Sports Medicine Physician at the Oklahoma Sports & Orthopedics Institute in Oklahoma City. Boehm also works with OU’s football, women’s basketball, men’s gymnastics, rowing and wrestling teams.

Holden served as the U.S. athletes’ 2000 Swim Team Physician for the Paralympic Games in Sydney, Australia, and as a team physician for the U.S. Olympics in 1994, 1995 and 2008. Holden occasionally travels with the team to competitions and makes bi-weekly visits to the training facility to medically evaluate student-athletes on the OU squads.

A four-year letterwinner and team captain her junior and senior years with the OU women’s tennis squad, Annette Moran has worked in the OU Athletics Department since concluding her eligibility in 2004. Earning a bachelor of arts in journalism in May of 2004, Moran accepted a graduate assistant position with Oklahoma Athletics in the academics office.

Entering her second year as the marketing director for women’s gymnastics is Ashley Payne. Payne is responsible for all season marketing and promotional plans, group ticket sales, in-meet operations and entertainment. Payne is the primary contact for soccer, softball and men’s and women’s gymnastics. Payne also assists with football and men’s and women’s basketball.

The Charlotte, N.C., native graduated from the University of North Carolina with a bachelor’s degree of Exercise and Sport Science before earning her master’s in Sport and Athletic Administration from Gonzaga University. Payne previously worked as a marketing intern at the University of Alabama, Gonzaga University and the University of North Carolina.

COMMUNICATIONS

Serving as the sports information director for the OU women’s gymnastics squad is Leslie Koch. Koch handles all media requests, is responsible for the creation of the team’s annual media guide and manages all content on SoonerSports.com for women’s gymnastics and women’s tennis. Koch is entering her fifth year with the OU Communications Office, serving as a volunteer student assistant, paid intern and is now a graduate assistant. Koch is in her fourth season as the primary contact for women’s tennis and her second with women’s gymnastics. Koch has also assisted with all media operations for football, men’s

basketball, women’s basketball, soccer and baseball with the communications office. The Tulsa, Okla., native is working towards a master’s degree in Adult and Higher Education with an emphasis in Intercollegiate Athletics Administration. One of Boren’s most far-reaching projects in promoting quality education at all levels is the Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence, which he founded in 1985. The foundation recognizes outstanding public school students and teachers and helps establish private local foundations to help give academic endowment grants to local public schools. Presidential Travel Scholarships, students from 111 countries on campus, more reciprocal international exchange agreements than any other university and the new International Programs Center are all making OU more international. The new Honors College helps to assure that no students need to leave Oklahoma to find an educational experience to match their potential.

The number of new facilities started or completed on the campus during the Boren years has matched the explosion in new programs. Since 1994, almost $1 billion in construction projects have been completed or are under way on OU’s three campuses. Among the largest of the recent projects are the $18.7 million renovation and expansion of historic Holmberg Hall, home of music and dance programs; the $67 million National Weather Center; the $19 million addition to the Michael F. Price College of Business; the $17 million Gaylord Hall for journalism and mass communication; the $27 million Stephenson Research and Technology Center; and the $83.5 million stadium project. The Health Sciences Center has a new Student Union, and the new $24 million Stanton L. Young Biomedical Research Center.

In 1995, Boren launched the “Reach for Excellence” fundraising campaign with a five-year goal of $200 million, which was twice as large as any fundraising drive in Oklahoma history. The drive exceeded $500 million, raising OU into the top 15 public universities in the United States in private endowment per capita. Since 1994, endowed professorships have increased from 100 to 560 and the OU donor base has grown from 18,000 to more than 125,000 friends and alumni. During the first 10 years of Boren’s tenure over $1 billion in private gifts were donated to the university.

Above all, the Boren years have been marked by an emphasis on putting students first. There is not a university president in the country that is more committed to students as his number one priority. He teaches a freshman-level course in political science each semester and is one of the few presidents of major universities to teach. Boren is married to Molly Shi Boren, a former judge and English teacher. Mrs. Boren is President Emeritus of the Oklahoma Arts Institute, which provides education programs in nine arts disciplines for high school students from across the state who are gifted in the arts. Molly Boren has two degrees from the University of Oklahoma, a master’s degree in English and a Juris Doctorate from the OU College of Law. A native of Seminole, Boren has two children, Carrie Christine Boren, an Episcopal minister, and David Daniel Boren, who has served as a member of the United States Congress from Oklahoma. Devoting much of his life to public service, Boren drew from the example of his parents, the late Congressman Lyle H. Boren and Christine Boren.

The word “renaissance” has often been used to describe the University of Oklahoma since the arrival of David L. Boren as its 13th president. It’s no coincidence then that the same term could be used to describe the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and its leader, Joe Castiglione. Just as Boren has transformed the university community that the department is an integral part of, Castiglione, with the support of Boren and OU’s Board of Regents, has done the same thing with the athletics department, easily one of the most recognized representatives of the state’s flagship for higher education. A department with a long tradition of excellence, there are some who would argue that the past 13 years represent the best of the best. With seven national championships and 44 conference titles produced in his tenure, it would be hard to dispute that. A place where competitive dreams come true and academic goals are the expectations, not the exceptions, has been created at OU. Through his leadership and the support of the University’s administration, there is a department-wide commitment, involving student-athletes, coaches and staff, to that standard. The 11th director of athletics at OU, Castiglione arrived on the Sooner campus in 1998 and what he found was nothing like what you would see today. He made some big changes, some big and, in the process, created a team of administrators, coaches and support staff who have built a climate that pursues ambitious, if not, lofty goals, high standards and a commitment to ethical behavior that is second to none. The emphasis has been and will always be on OU’s nearly 600 student-athletes who have flourished in

the atmosphere, creating new levels of excellence in competition and in the classroom only to raise the bar in succeeding years. Their performances enhance the belief shared by Castiglione, the department’s staff and the university family that the best is yet to come. Proof of the overall excellence of the program can be demonstrated by the annual Learfield Director’s Cup rankings. The Sooners broke into the top 10 for the first time in school history at the conclusion of the 2010-11 academic year. That performance came after the department finished in the top 30 in 10 of the previous 12 years, a sustained pattern of excellence not seen before in the history of one of the nation’s premier intercollegiate athletics departments. For Castiglione, though, it’s not just about the championships and trophies. The victories that he celebrates with his Sooners include graduation rates that continue to climb, record-setting grade point averages and academic honors. The true measure of achievement for Castiglione and, by extension, the department’s coaches and staff, is measured in the success of the student-athletes in relation to the department’s mission statement “Inspiring champions today … Preparing leaders for tomorrow” Since arriving at OU in 1998 after an outstanding administrative career at Missouri, Castiglione has insisted that daily and long-term decisions be made in a financially responsible manner. The result of that commitment has helped the department close the books in the black in each of the last 13 years, making it one of the few Division I programs which remain totally self-sustaining. His understanding of how the department fits into the University’s academic mission led to a decision in June 2009 to increase the direct support provided by the department on an annual basis to $4 million dollars. Through direct and indirect support, OU Athletics, under Castiglione’s leadership, provides more than

$7 million annually to OU’s Academics Budget. Facility improvement and construction has been carried out at a record pace and Castiglione takes pride to point out that those improvements have all been paid for with private money. Castiglione is quick to give full credit to the studentathletes and coaches, the staff, OU President David L. Boren, the OU Board of Regents, the donors and the fans for the success experienced during his tenure. It was that commitment to a team approach emphasis that was one of the many qualities that that the search committee recognized when they recommended Castiglione to university administration in 1998. In recognition of the performance of OU’s teams on the field and in the classroom, of the fiscal stability created during his tenure, the dramatic increases in donor giving, facility construction and renovations, and the cutting-edge programs that the department has begun during his tenure, Castiglione was named National Athletic Director of the Year in May 2009 by the Sports Business Journal. That award was one of several earned by Castiglione and the department. The 2007 PRISM Award winner, presented by the School of Sports Management at the University of Massachusetts, OU was just the second Division I winner and all of the programs recognized by the selection panel were started under Castiglione’s leadership with the full support of university administration. His peers have honored him for the department’s achievements as well. In October 2004, the Bobby Dodd Foundation named him Athletics Director of the Year. In 2003, he was inducted into the National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators Hall of Fame. In June 2001, he received the General Robert R. Neyland Athletic Director Award for lifetime achievement from the All-American Football Foundation. The National Association of Collegiate

He recently served on the NCAA Diversity Leadership Strategic Planning Committee and the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Discussion Group. He is currently serving on the NCAA Working Group on Collegiate Model-Rules Committee. A former member of the Phi Delta Theta Foundation Board of Trustees, he is a highly requested speaker at annual conventions and continuing education institutes. In November 2011, he was named to the Broward County Sports Hall of Fame. His involvement in the local community has led to service with civic clubs, churches and charities, including the United Way of Norman. Castiglione recently served his third term as OU’s campus co-chair, which resulted in the highest recorded contributions ever by faculty, staff and students to the United Way of Norman’s annual campaign. A native of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Castiglione is married to the former Kristen Bartel, a 1990 graduate of the University of Missouri. They are the parents of two sons, Joseph Robert, Jr. and Jonathan Edmund.

NATIONAL CHAMPIONS

Kelly Garrison (left) certainly made the most of her two seasons with the Sooners, racking up four NCAA individual titles en route to seven All-America honors. The Altus, Okla., native dominated the 1987 season like few collegiate gymnasts have ever done, winning the NCAA all-around title with a record score of 39.15, securing event wins on every apparatus at the Big Eight Championship, winning the all-around crown at 17 of 18 dual meets and setting three NCAA records in the process. Garrison qualfied for the event finals in three of four events at the 1987 NCAA Championships, but had to withdraw from vault and floor exercise due to an ankle injury. Throughout the 1987 campaign, Garrison topped the previous NCAA all-around record (38.85), held by Megan Marsden (Utah) and Elfi Schlegel (Florida), seven times. Garrison followed up her spectacular season by sweeping all five individual titles at the Big Eight Championship for the second straight season. She then earned All-America status in every category possible at the 1988 NCAA Championships, securing three national titles in the process.

OU was the No. 1 seed at the regional and posted its sixth score of 197.000 or higher on the season to capture the regional championship. Oklahoma shined on the ever-challenging beam in its final rotation, sealing its first regional title since 2006 with a 49.475 on the apparatus in the Sooners highest event tally of the night.
