After going 2-2 at the Seawolf Spike two weekends ago, the Warriors opened up conference play with a hard-fought five-set victory over host Cal State Dominguez Hills last Friday, before falling in three sets to nationallyranked Cal State L.A. on Saturday. With 13 returners this season, Cal State Stanislaus is much improved from their 10-20 team last season. The Warriors are led by senior Lianne Vicchio, who earned all-tournament honors at the Seawolf Spike, with 3.22 kills per set and is second on the team in digs (65).

Chico State, who opened up its 2010 campaign at the Seawolf Spike on Sept. 3-4, entered conference play with a 4-1 record with the only loss coming from the Spike champions in Seattle Pacific. The Wildcats opened their CCAA schedule at Cal State L.A. on Friday, but fell in four sets before redeeming themselves in a three-set sweep of Cal State Dominguez Hills a night later. Despite losing their top two hitters from a season ago, Chico State is a conference title contender, led by Jessica Leek (3.22 k/s, .378 hitting %).

Seawolves Go Winless In Conference On CCAA Opening Weekend In the CCAA opener, sophomore Ally Sather had a team-high 12 kills and Hayley Ross handed out a season-high 35 assists, but Cal State East Bay had a huge night at the net, blocking 10 Sonoma State attacks, including eight solo rejections, en route to a 3-1 victory on Friday. A night later, No. 11 UC San Diego used a balanced attack to sweep the Seawolves in three-sets despite a team-high 12 kills by Sather and 11 kills by Keala Peterson. The Last Time... ...the Seawolves opened up conference play with back-to-back losses was back on Sept. 7-8, 2007 at Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State San Bernardino. Krenwinkel’s Diggin’ It As she did most of last season, junior Taylor Krenwinkel leads the CCAA in digs per set with 5.35. She has 107 this season, putting her at fourth on the all-time list for digs in a career with 1,169. She needs just 28 digs to move into third on the all-time list and 536 to top former SSU student-athlete Taylor Manton for the school record (1,704). All-American Watch Juniors Keala Peterson and Taylor Krenwinkel topped off a fantastic 2009 season by being named to the All-American team, only the second and third volleyball student-athlete to do so in program history. Peterson had an outstanding 2010 debut at the Seawolf Spike, recording a team-high 45 kills, including a 20-kill effort in a 3-1 win over BYU-Hawaii. Krenwinkel was the CCAA’s best defender last season and begins this season with 107 digs, 30 of which came against BYU-Hawaii on 9/3 (season-high). Krenwinkel was also named to the Seawolf Spike All-Tournament team. Coaches Pick Sonoma State To Finish Fourth in CCAA The Sonoma State women’s volleyball team has been picked to finish fourth in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) in 2010 after a preseason vote of the head coaches in the 12-team conference. The Seawolves finished fourth in the CCAA standings a year ago with a 15-7 record.

2010 SONOMA STATE VOLLEYBALL Weekly Release • September 13, 2010

Head Coach Bear Grassl Head Coach Bear Grassl returns for his ninth year at the helm of the Sonoma State University volleyball program in 2010. The 2008 CCAA Coach of the Year, Grassl has led the Seawolves to two of the best seasons in school history in ‘08 and ‘09, putting forward a 46-15 record and back-to-back trips to the NCAA Tournament.

2010 Sonoma State Volleyball Roster

# Name 1 Hayley Ross 2 Kelsey Dall 3 Sammi Bentovoja 4 Taylor Krenwinkel 5 Kaitlyn Dunaway 6 Amanda Vanover 7 Nicole Gragnola 8 Keala Peterson The 2009 Seawolves got out to the best start in 9 Annelise Dohrer program history, winning their first 11 matches on their way to a 23-8 overall record and their 10 Lindsay Lytle highest national ranking ever. Led by a core group 11 Devynne Johnson of local players and a roster that featured a pair of All-Americans, the Seawolves advanced to the NCAA 12 Alex DaRosa Tournament for the second consecutive year, where 13 Ally Sather they were upset by Cal State L.A.. 14 Brooke Moore 15 Kendahl Batiste The Seawolves burst on to the scene in 2008 when they won 14 of their first 15 matches. As the season 17 Kelsey Hull went on, Sonoma State stayed close in the CCAA title race but went 9-5 the rest of the season and finished 20 Devin Shaver 21 Briana Hammonds tied for second in the conference (15-5). However, the Seawolves had a stellar home record, going 14-1 23 Ashley Robinson on the hardwood of the Seawolf Gym. Sonoma State also appeared in the NCAA Division II West Regional Tournament for the first time since 1993 but a firstround loss to conference-foe Chico State knocked the Seawolves out of national title contention.

Grassl took the reigns in 2002 and led the Seawolves to a 15-14 record. He repeated the feat in 2003 (1514) and then went 14-12 in ‘04. In 2005 and 2006, the Seawolves struggled in the win column playing in the tough California Collegiate Athletic Association with a young squad. In eight seasons at Sonoma State, Grassl has coached three All-Americans and countless All-Conference All-Region performers. He has also seen his players earn numerous Academic All-District honors in the past few seasons. A 1991 graduate of Sonoma State, Grassl was head coach at El Molino High School from 1992-2001. During that span, he guided the Lions to six Sonoma County League championships, seven North Coast Section titles, five Northern California championships and one California state championship, in 1999. His career coaching mark at El Molino was an impressive 267-78.

National Spotlight on Sonoma State For the first time in school history, the Sonoma State volleyball team began the season ranked in the Top 25 of the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division II poll, debuting at No. 21. However, the Seawolves have since dropped out of the Top 25 after a slow start to the 2010 season. SSU spent all but one week ranked in the Top 25 last season and got as high as No. 13 -- the highest ranking in school history. 2009 Year in Review Sonoma State got off to a huge start in 2009, winning the first 11 matches before falling to San Francisco State in five-sets on Sept. 18. The Seawolves went 12-7 the rest of the way and qualified for the NCAA Division II Volleyball Championship Tournament for the second consecutive season. However, SSU lost in the first round to CCAA-foe Cal State L.A. Follow The Action, LIVE! Can’t make it to The Wolves’ Den to catch the match? The Seawolf Sports Network is making its return to the internet again this season. The SSN is in its second season carrying the home matches of the Sonoma State volleyball team and an array of broadcasters, including Associate Athletic Director Brandon Bronzan, will call the game live on the internet at: http://www.ustream.tv/channel/sonoma-state-seawolves Live stats will also be available by going to the official web site of Sonoma State Athletics at sonomaseawolves.com.
