4-4, 1-3 ccaa

The Wolves’ Den at Rohnert Park, Calif.

It’s been a tough road for the defending national champions so far this season, opening up with a 4-4 record overall and just 1-3 in the conference. However, Cal Poly Pomona has shown that it’s not how you start, but how you finish. After a 7-5 start last season, the Broncos reeled off a 15-game win streak and then finished the season winning 21 of their last 22 games, including a 78-75 victory in the national title game last season over Indiana (Pa.) in Springfield, Mass. CPP is coming off a road split last weekend, losing at San Francisco State on Wednesday (6460), but defeating Cal State Monterey Bay on Thursday (75-65). Three players average in double-figures, led by the 13.5 points from Mitchel Anderson. The Broncos lead the all-time series, 24-12, and have won the last four games over the Seawolves. SSU last defeated CPP back on Feb. 28, 2008, a 64-63 win in Rohnert Park.

vs. Cal State San Bernardino COYOTES Saturday, January 8 • 7:30 p.m.

5-3, 3-1 ccaa

The Wolves’ Den at Rohnert Park, Calif.

Winners in four of their last five games, the Coyotes are coming off a sweep of Cal State Monterey Bay (85-50) and San Francisco State (8460) last week. Cal State San Bernardino’s only loss in the last five games came at the hands of then-5th-ranked Central Washington at the Great Western Shootout in Las Vegas (71-65). Cal State L.A. handed CSUSB its only conference loss, a narrow 59-57 defeat on Dec. 3. Three players are averaging in double-figures -- Kwame Alexander (11.8), Aaron Hill (11.4) and Corey Caston (10.8). D.J. Shumpert leads the CCAA in blocks with 2.0 a game and Caston is third in assists (4.9) and steals (2.0). Cal State San Bernardino leads the all-time series at 25-7 with the Coyotes winning the last four games. Sonoma State last defeated CSUSB back on Jan. 16, 2009, a 75-64 win in Rohnert Park.

As a member of the California Collegiate Athletic Association, one of the toughest conferences in the nation, every weekend features a tough test. This weekend will be no different. The Seawolves will host defending national champion Cal Poly Pomona on Thursday before welcoming Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday. Both games are set to tipoff at 7:30 p.m. in The Wolves’ Den.

Dish 'Em Up

Junior Steven Pratt is handing out assists left and right. He is second in the CCAA in assists with 55 (5.5 a game), two assists behind conference-leader Jay Flores from Chico State. Pratt is currently ninth on the Sonoma State all-time list for most assists in a career with 200, which is 105 assists from the top of the list, held by Antoine Woods (305 in 1991-92, 93-94). He has led the team in all but one of Sonoma State’s games this season.

More News and Notes The Plague of Fouls

For the last two games, the Seawolves have had a huge disadvantage at the free throw line. Sonoma State has been outshot 72-30 at just the free throw line alone and outscored 53-18 in two games -- a margin of 35 points.

Nightmare Road Trip Took A Toll

Since the Seawolves opened up the 2010-11 season at home in the Ron Logsdon Basketball Classic on Nov. 19-20, they spent 42 days between home games. The team traveled over 3,300 miles, playing seven games, before Sonoma State hosted Humboldt State on Sunday -- the Seawolves won just two of those seven games on the road. However, ten of SSU’s last 16 games of the season will be played at home.

The Return of the Seawolf Sports Network

For the third straight season, the Seawolf Sports Network is set to broadcast all men’s basketball home games in 2010-11. Theo “The Fightmaster” Fightmaster and Kevin “Bird Man” Christensen will bring you the call from The Wolves’ Den every home contest this year. The SSN is free of charge and registration and is accessible by going to www.sonomaseawolves.com and clicking the link at the bottom of the page.

Sonoma State Picked to Finish Sixth in CCAA

After finishing tied for sixth in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) standings a year ago with a 10-12 record, Sonoma State was picked to finish sixth again, according to a preseason vote by the conference’s coaches. The Seawolves are led by 17th-year head coach Pat Fuscaldo, who owns a 225-209 overall record at SSU and a 170-140 mark in conference play.

2009-10 In Review

Sonoma State started the 2009-10 season off a bit slow, falling to 3-11 before the Seawolves bounced back to win eight of their last 12 games to qualify for the CCAA Championship Tourament for the second straight season. However, Sonoma State lost to longtime-rival Humboldt State in the opening round of the tournament, 72-68, ending the Seawolves season at 11-17 overall and 10-12 in the CCAA.

2010-11 Sonoma State Men's Basketball Fuscaldo's Record at SSU Head Coach Pat Fuscaldo Year Overall Conference Pat Fuscaldo returns for his 17th season as head coach of the Sonoma State University men’s basketball team in 2010-11. In his previous sixteen years at the helm, Fuscaldo has a record of 223-207 overall and 170-140 in league play. In 2007-08, Fuscaldo became the winningest basketball coach in Sonoma State history and he is currently the dean of Men’s Basketball coaches in the CCAA. In 2005-06, Fuscaldo led the Seawolves to their first ever California Collegiate Athletic Association championship with a 16-4 conference record. For his efforts, Fuscaldo was voted the CCAA Coach of the Year by his peers. The squad also advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the third time in the previous nine years. Individually, the ‘05-’06 Seawolves featured an All-American, two All-West Region players, four All-Conference stars, and the CCAA Player of the Year. Before arriving at Sonoma State, Fuscaldo was the head coach at the College of Notre Dame (now Notre Dame de Namur) in Belmont. There, he turned a struggling program into a Northern California Athletic Conference playoff team in just three years. The Argonauts won just six games in his first season, but increased their victory total to ten the following year and 14 the next to earn a NCAC playoff berth and give Fuscaldo strong consideration for conference Coach of the Year honors. Prior to joining the staff at Notre Dame, Fuscaldo was an assistant coach at Skyline College, serving two stints, 1985-86 and then 1987-91. While there, Skyline reached the California State Final Eight in 1990 and 1991, won Coast Conference championships in 1989, 1990, and 1991, and posted a cumulative record of 105-23. Fuscaldo was an assistant coach at the University of San Francisco in 1986-87, and he has also coached at San Jose State and San Francisco State, where he received his Master’s Degree in Physical Education/Sports Psychology-Administration. He received his B.A. in Physical Education from San Francisco State in 1983. As a player, Fuscaldo was a two-year performer for Eastern Connecticut State College in Willimantic, Connecticut. He attended St. Thomas Moore Preparatory School in Colchester and Greenwich High School in Greenwich. Pat is married to former Stanford All-American and ABL player Molly Goodenbour, now the head women’s basketball coach at UC Irvine.
