Be a fan™ Dear Friends, On behalf of the global Special Olympics family, thank you for being a fan of our athletes! We’re especially thankful for your presence and support at State Summer Games. Here our athletes take center stage and demonstrate the skills, confidence and pride they have developed through countless hours of training. Here, they earn respect -- from teammates, from competitors, and from everyone who witnesses their on-field accomplishments. Here, the athletes are the stars! Special Olympics believes in creating a world where each person, regardless of ability, is accepted and welcomed and where every individual contributes to the strength and vibrancy of the whole. A Special Olympics athlete on the medal stand is transformed from someone who may have been viewed with pity, misunderstood, or seen in a negative light, to a person who is exalted, celebrated, and known as a heroic champion! The human race excels when there is justice, and the most vulnerable or undervalued gain dignity and respect. I know that you will witness such countless transformations over these next few days. Through sport, Special Olympics creates an energizing covenant between competitor and fan where labels are lost, new identities are created and every preconceived notion gives way to ideas of possibilities. Sports are a universal language, uniting people on and off the playing field, and the lessons are relevant to all of us – families, youth, educators, medical professionals, and government officials. As millions more individuals are touched by the Special Olympics movement, the traditional barriers of race, ethnicity, education level, social status, religion and economic background, disappear and the human race as a whole prevails. Athletes, you and your families are teaching the world the lessons of acceptance but at great cost. Every day, you fight against the prejudice and fear of the ages—fight to go to a decent school, fight to see a trained doctor, fight to train with a great coach, fight to be treated as real athletes, to live in real communities, to bring about real change both on and off the playing field. Today we say no more to ignorance and humiliation! Each of our local Special Olympics competitions, no matter how big or how small, has the same transformative impact on athlete and spectator alike. They all demonstrate our athletes’ humanity, their joy in competition, their pride, and their potential. They all illuminate the possibility of a different kind of world -- a world in which everyone is respected, accepted, and included. If you are a fan of sports that create unity, athletes who inspire, and connections that foster acceptance, then you are already a fan of Special Olympics. Be a fan of the human race, join the Special Olympics movement today and help create a world of respect, acceptance, and dignity for all. Good luck athletes, and let the Games begin!

Best Wishes,

Timothy P. Shriver Chairman and CEO Special Olympics

Dear Summer Games Athletes and Friends: Welcome to the Special Olympics New Jersey 2010 Summer Games. This year looks to be one of the largest Summer Games in our history, hosting some of the most talented athletes ever to compete in Special Olympics New Jersey competition. Over the next few days we will all be privileged to witness the results of athletes who have committed months, and some even years, in preparation for their competitions at these Games. And we all will be honored to join the families of these athletes in celebration of their achievements. All of those who will make these 2010 Games an event of a lifetime for these athletes – whether you attend as a volunteer, Games Committee member, sponsor or coach – have or will earn the title of “friend” through your acceptance of our athletes beyond these Games. This acceptance through sport will lead to acceptance of our athletes in their schools and their communities and eventually on playing fields with schoolmates, neighbors and other friends. These Summer Games, when they conclude on Sunday, will once again be a beginning that will provide us all with a purpose to go back to our own communities and continue our efforts to offer opportunities to more athletes through understanding and inclusion. Our role as “friend” and ambassador will be critical for the growth of our movement going forward. To our volunteers, Games Committee members, sponsors, coaches and the entire Law Enforcement community, thank you for all that you have done to make this weekend possible. And to our athletes and their families, congratulations and best of luck!! Sincerely,

Volunteers Volunteers are the cornerstone of Special Olympics New Jersey. Behind the scenes volunteers are hands-on with a wide variety of projects. On-site event volunteers include students, senior citizens, business people, the Law Enforcement community, athlete family members, amateur and professional athletes, coaches, teachers and many others. The sports management teams and coaches help organize programs and set up practices and competitions. As role models and character builders, coaches teach the sports skills and spirit that define a true athlete. Many positions do not require volunteers to be experts in a particular sport or event. Training and information is provided for each volunteer. Be a fan! Volunteer! Call 609-896-8000 or visit www.sonj.org today!

Law Enforcement Torch Run When it comes to championing a cause, no one does it better than the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics New Jersey. With 27 years under its belt, this growing group of State Committee volunteers from all branches of Law Enforcement has a focused mission … to create community awareness for the potential of people with intellectual disabilities and to ensure funding that will support every eligible person who desires to participate in the Special Olympics New Jersey program. Today, the Law Enforcement Torch Run has become a powerful force behind Special Olympics. Every June on the morning of Summer Games Opening Ceremonies, beginning as early as 4:45 a.m., some 3,000 members of Law Enforcement literally hit the streets running with the “Flame of Hope” torch. Known as the “Guardians of the Flame,” these officers travel on foot more than 900 miles, weaving through 387

communities to awaken and inform residents of Special Olympics New Jersey Summer Games. Throughout the year, the calendar is peppered with creative, large-scale fundraising events as members of the Torch Run State Committee ensure the ongoing growth of Special Olympics New Jersey athlete programs. Be it the challenge of taking a Polar Bear Plunge, or the test of fortitude in a run through the Lincoln Tunnel, or the test of strength in pulling a 93,000-pound jet, the Torch Run Committee’s events are being embraced by the public and are flourishing as evidenced in 2009, when the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics New Jersey was lauded for having raised more than $2.4 million. Special Olympics New Jersey is honored by the dedicated service of the New Jersey Law Enforcement Torch Run and grateful to be the beneficiary of this group of loyal friends and supporters.

2009 Hall of Fame Athlete

Lindsay Fulop Recipients named to the Hall of Fame are people who define the Special Olympics movement through their spirit, drive, accomplishments and vision. Last year’s winner of this honor is Lindsay Fulop, who epitomizes the character traits of a Hall of Fame Athlete. In a word, Lindsay is an achiever. On and off the field of sport, Lindsay works tirelessly to fine tune her skills of competition and presentation. She applies herself zealously to her training and to reach her athletic goals. She has excelled locally in the sports of Aquatics, Bowling and Golf. Her training and dedication have led her to compete in numerous events, including the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Shanghai, and the 2006 USA National Games in Iowa. Lindsay is a Global Messenger, sharing the message of Special Olympics with many people in communities around the state. She is also a member of Athlete Congress, a group of Special Olympics athletes who research and suggest changes to improve the program. With her signature-cheerful smile, Lindsay advocates that opportunities, personal achievement and a strong social network are key elements to improving the quality of life for individuals with disabilities. She has found all three in Special Olympics and knows that it takes the support of volunteers, sponsors and individual donors for her and others to have these growing opportunities. We congratulate Lindsay on being named the 2009 Hall of Fame athlete.

I am the Champion. In 1989, Nicole Dalton was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis. “I spent a lot of time in bed, hallucinating with fever.” Determined not to give in to the disease, Nicole sought out treatment after treatment until she finally found a regimen that let her live her life. Today she has the energy to go to exercise classes and work with active pre-schoolers. “I am the champion.
