Deanna Edwards
One Place For Now – Two Part Treble (F Major)
Written for the Sonic Timelapse Project 2020
One Place For Now One Place For Now is written for the Sonic Timelapse Composer Project of 2020, developed by Canadian composers Laura Hawley, Geung Kroeker Lee, and Katarina Gimon. Inspired by the contrasting words “empty and hopeful,” this piece explores mixed-emotions experienced during the Covid-19 pandemic. It looks at navigating simultaneous feelings of hope and hopelessness, empowerment and fear, and the importance of self-compassion, belief in oneself, and coming together in times of struggle. The tempo marking of 60 bpm represents the function and consistency of time as a stabilizing factor during the pandemic. The text explores
e r o c
shifting moods that can be reflected in both the physical and dynamic expression of the piece. Performance Notes:
s l a
One Place For Now is written with virtual learning in mind and is meant to be adapted to the needs of the ensemble. Available in 2-part treble, SSA, SAT, SAB, TTB, and SATB, there are a variety of settings and keys to choose from. In terms of performance, this piece can be sung a cappella, with an accompaniment created using the chord symbols or chord chart, with the scrolling video practice track, or with the provided
s u r e P
accompaniment track. Movement can be explored through online mirroring or with the use of ASL (American sign language) to enhance significant lyrics within the text (see video resource). Once familiar with the piece,
an ensemble could create and/or display artwork or other visual elements to represent their pandemic
experience. (Duration: approx. 3 min) About the Composer:
Deanna Edwards is a vocalist, choral conductor, clinician, composer, and secondary music educator with the Burnaby School District on the West Coast of Canada. She has taught in various musical settings, including

Deanna trained with numerous choirs and private instructors during her youth, and she has performed jazz, classical and traditional music across Canada and the United States. She has taught at Kwantlan University, the Native Education College, and has sung on numerous albums and television and film projects. She holds degrees in Professional Music, Jazz Studies, and Secondary Music Education. She also directs a children’s choir at Coastal Sound Music Academy. Deanna’s compositions explore meaningful topics such as relationships, life experiences, and personal expression! As a mixed-heritage member of the St’at’imc First Nation, Deanna is also interested in using composition to explore how traditional and contemporary choral music traditions overlap and connect with First Nations cultural knowledge and experience.
