arm weather is right around the corner, and if you have children, chances are you’re considering swimming lessons to teach them how to swim and be safe in the water. Well look no further! Whether you live in Wesley Chapel or Tampa,

SwimKids USA Family Swim School is the swim school of choice for parents. Why? “Because at SwimKids USA you get results!” says Alan Messing. As Founder, Owner, of SwimKids USA, Alan stays involved in every aspect of the program and his staff. For over 28 years, thousands of children have

graduated from the school. Best of all, they are not only having fun, but are safe and skilled in the water. “Safety is our number one priority here at SwimKids USA,” says Alan. And rightfully so when you consider this: Fact: In the state of Florida, the leading cause of death for children under the age of 5 is drowning. And with that fact, it’s no wonder why parents choose SwimKids USA. One only has to view the movie clips on the SwimKids USA website to see the end results. You can see their one year old students swim! "What makes our program different is when parents enroll in our program, they are paying for swim skills, not swim bills" says Alan. "Unlike big box swim schools that debit a parent's bank account each month anywhere from $80-$300 per month for 1x per week lessons, at SwimKids USA we don't do that. We understand that the parent's goals are to teach their kids to swim and be safe in the water, and be done. They are not looking to add another ongoing bill to their already tight budget." says Alan. With over 23 pools throughout the state of Florida, and its 2000 customers, SwimKids USA's reputation in the

area is second to none. Whether it is infant classes or stroke technique classes for your aspiring competitive swimmer, there is a SwimKids USA class designed just for you. But don’t delay! SwimKids USA’s classes fill up fast, typically by May. For more information, simply go to the nationally awarded and recognized SwimKids USA website at www.SwimKidsUSA.com where you can register online, view class schedules, customer testimonials and more! You can also call Alan directly at 813-991-6258. Be sure to tell them the West Meadows News sent you. •

Riverhills Elementary School Riverhills Wildcats have had a busy start to 2014! In addition to working in our thematic unit of “How the World Works”, there have been lots of exciting learning

Creating a Positive Experience Moving with your Pet Moving is a chore all by itself, but making sure your pet thrives well in the adventure requires extra planning.

Renting? Make sure they are Friendly.

Finding a rental that take pets is your first step in securing happy housing for you and your animal friend. You’ll want your new landlord to welcome you both with open arms, so be up front with the fact that you have a pet. You can go one further by having a pet resume at the ready. This is a document that includes vaccination and spayed or neutered information (with supporting documents), references from past landlords, neighbors, your veterinarian, obedience trainers and any other positive information that will make your pet shine. Look for housing, ideally, with a fenced yard, in a neighborhood which offers plenty of walking options and perhaps a dog park. If you worry about your dog or cat roaming loose, consider renting a house on a street that’s removed from a heavily-trafficked road.

Planning the Move…

Depending on how far you have to go and how you’re getting there, you will want to start getting your pet used to using a carrier as soon as possible. Make it readily available with a favorite toy or blanket inside. Once your pet sees the carrier as a safe haven, traveling in it on the big day won’t seem as traumatic. If traveling by plane, check pet travel policies on your airline of choice to see what restrictions they have and to find out what paperwork and evidence of vaccinations you must provide — before making reservations.

Talk to your vet about whether your pet may need a sedative for more comfortable travel. Also, consider getting your dog or cat groomed just before the trip so that nails are trimmed for the event.

Moving Day!

The day of the move is usually stressful for everyone involved, and your pet can pick up on all the expectant energy in the air. Be sure to keep your routine as normal as possible, while keeping your voice and body language as calm as you can. Plenty of affection and praise will assure your pet that nothing bad is happening. Moving days also offer the opportunity for anxious pets to bolt out an open door. Choose a room in the home you’re leaving and make it your pet’s base while everything is moved out. Make sure to keep the door closed (warn friends and family members to do the same) and to supply your pet with food, water, a favorite toy and the crate, if you’re using one.

Now that everyone has made it to the New Diggs… What?

Keep your pet crated or in a closed room until everything is moved in and you can begin to create some order. As with your exit strategy, supply your pet with everything she will need upon arrival—familiar food/water bowls and favorite toys. Now your pet can begin the process of exploring this new territory comfortably. •

International Moment of Laughter Day Always April 14th International Moment of Laughter Day is a special day that will put a big smile on your face. The objective of this day is to get people to laugh, and to laugh more often. After all, "laughter is the best medicine". Moment of Laughter Day is also known as National Moment of Laughter Day, and plain old Moment of Laughter Day. We don't care whether you celebrate today as a local, national, or international day. What's important is that you bring about laughter (and happiness) to those you come in contact with today. To celebrate this special day, simply tell jokes or do funny things that cause people to laugh. A smile is not a good enough reaction. Successful participation in this day results in whole-hearted laughter. WEST MEADOWS NEWS

Origin of "Moment of Laughter Day": Humorologist Izzy Gesell created Moment of Laughter Day to encourage people to laugh. It sure would be nice to meet the creator of this day in person, so we could share a laugh together. We found varying dates for this celebration, all in the month of April. But among them, April 14th is the day designated by the creator as International Moment of Laughter Day. •

do differently

Express gratitude

Learn to forgive

When you appreciate what you have, what you have appreciates in value. If we aren’t thankful for what we already have, we will have a hard time ever being happy.

Harboring feelings of hatred is horrible for your well-being.

#2

Increase flow experiences

#8

People who think optimistically see the world as a place packed with endless opportunites, especially in trying times.

Flow is a state in which it feels like time stands still. It is when you are so focused on what you are doing that you become one with the task. Nothing is distracting you are competing for your focus.

#3

#9

Cultivate optimism

Avoid over-thinking and social comparision Comparing yourself to someone else can be poisonous. The only person you should compare to is yourself before now.

#4

Practice acts of kindness Selflessly helping someone is a super powerful way to feel good inside.

#5

Nurture social relationships The happiest people on the planet are the ones who have deep, meaningful relationships.

#6

Develop strategies for coping It helps to have healthy strategies for coping pre-rehearsed, on-call, and in your arsenal at your disposal. 10

April What to Plant

Annuals: New varieties of coleus do well in sun or shade and provide vivid colors and patterns for months. Bulbs: Planting early-, mid-, and late-blooming varieties of daylily will insure months of color from these low maintenance plants. Herbs: Add nasturtiums to your herb garden. The leaves and flowers add a peppery zest to salads. Vegetables: Continue planting warm season crops such as beans, cantaloupe, and okra. Mulch well to prevent weeds, and provide water if the weather has been dry.

What to DO

Pests: Monitor landscape plants weekly for aphids on tender new growth. Flowering Plants: Check for thrips if leaves and/or flowers of gardenias and roses are damaged. Divide perennials and bulbs: Divide clumps of bulbs, ornamental grasses, or herbaceous perennials to expand or rejuvenate garden beds or to pass-along to friends. Lawn Problems: Many lawn problems, such as lack of water, mimic insect damage. Confirm the damage is being caused by insects before applying a pesticide. Shrubs: Choose from a wide variety of shrubs to add to the landscape now. Lawns: Apply fertilizer after new growth has started. Choose a fertilizer (not a “weed and feed”) with little or no phosphorus unless a soil test indicates the need for it. A fertilizer with controlled-release nitrogen yields longer-lasting results.
