Publisher Note Hopefully you receive this issue by Thanksgiving. This may be the busiest time of year for many people. I hope that everyone is able at some point or another to stop and smell the Poinsettias. Enjoy this month's exxentric mix of articles, from health and wellness, to a new solar powered community by Lennar, to the Dark Side of Selfies! It's been fun putting together. I would like to let everyone know that we are continuing to grow our little publishing empire. We are on issue three of our new Lutz Magazine. It is similar to Wesley Chapel Magazine in that it is more entertainment driven than it is "news". Lutz is another growing area and we're happy to be a part of their community. Digital Billboards Approved in Pasco Pasco County’s 18-year ban on new billboards officially is over, with Clear Channel Outdoors planning to install four digital advertising boards across the county. In an agreement approved unanimously Tuesday by county commissioners, the company will take down 28 static billboards in exchange for the four high-tech digital light-emitting diode billboards, which rotate advertising messages. Billboard companies had sought the trades because they can sell up to eight advertisements on a single LED sign. Commissioners

agreed to amend their outdoor advertising ordinance earlier this year in an attempt to remove what they called visual blight, particularly along the U.S. 19 corridor in west Pasco. "I think our citizens are going to be happy,’’ commission Chairman Mike Moore said Tuesday. Clear Channel plans to install digital boards on: U.S. 19; State Road 54 east of Little Road; Dale Mabry Highway and Interstate 75. It will remove single signs from: State Road 52, Dale Mabry Highway, Little Road, Seven Springs Boulevard and County Line Road, two each from U.S. 41 and Alternate U.S. 19, and five from U.S. 19. Tom O’Neil, vice president for real estate/public affairs for Clear Channel’s Tampa Bay division, told commissioners the first two conversions should be completed by the end of the year. Alarmed at a proliferation of outdoor advertising, the county banned new billboards in 1999, but not before companies flooded the market with permit applications in advance of that ordinance. Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel Opens “Inspiration Place,” A One-Of-A-Kind Center For Women’s Health Care November 10, 2017, Wesley Chapel, FL – The to-do list is long, and the schedule is packed with activities, and often times, women put their health and wellness needs on the bottom of the list until it’s a critical need. But now, there’s a place to fit in your massage and your facial along with your mammogram and routine exams, plus get in a workout, all in one day. Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel held a ribbon cutting and ladies open house Tuesday, November 14, at Inspiration Place, its new 12,000-square-foot concierge health facility dedicated to whole-person health care services for women. “Inspiration Place makes it possible to take care of our physical, spiritual and mental needs, which is so important for our overall health,” said Denyse BalesChubb, president and CEO of Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel. Inspiration Place is staffed with female specialty physicians including a breast surgeon, OB-GYN, urologist and 8 Wesley Chapel Magazine

endocrinologist. There’s also imaging services such as 3-D mammography and ultrasound, as well as specialty services like pelvic floor physical therapy. And the best part is, you can have all your appointments in one day, in one place, with a concierge helping you schedule what you need. You can also get same-day results and have any necessary follow-ups and additional testing that day as well. And in between appointments, enjoy spa services, or sit back and sip on a cup of a coffee from Tampa-based Buddy Brew brand coffee. Bales-Chubb said, “As women, we sometimes find it impossible to take care of everything we need to get done, plus find time to schedule appointments for our own health care needs. Inspiration Place empowers women to make that happen.” Bales-Chubb says the team is constantly assessing what they can

do to meet the needs of women in the community and will continue to offer more services as the need in the community grows. Inspiration Place is open Monday through Friday. Spa treatments are available from 10:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. Imaging and pelvic floor therapy services are available as early as 7:30 a.m. and as late as 6:30 p.m., depending on the day. To find out more information about Inspiration Place or to RSVP for the ribbon cutting and open house, visit www.fhinspirationplace.org/. NOVEMBER 2017

Social Media

The Dark Side of Selfies

Three ways to overcome negative thinking from social media By Dr. Gina Midyett

Have you taken a selfie today?

hances are you’ve either taken a selfie, or have seen a selfie posted on social media today. Posting selfies on sites like Facebook and Instagram have skyrocketed in the last few years, especially among fitness fanatics, teenagers, and just about anyone looking to present a “perfect world” to their friends. Ten years ago you likely didn’t even know that word existed, yet just last year, “selfie” was voted Oxford Dictionary’s word of the year. Taking selfies can be fun and is a great way to showcase progress for hard work at the gym, a fun trip, family event, holiday party, or capturing an important moment in your life. It makes keeping up with your friends and family members super simple. In these instances, selfies are a harmless, positive, inspiring, and even an important part of life – but they can also have a dark side. Research conducted at the University of Ohio found increased time spent on Facebook is correlated with negative body image. This is not the first study to find a similar connection. More often than not, the things we see of our friends on social media sites are typically images of “perfect” bodies, or the perfect spouse, or the perfect child, or the perfect vacation. When was the last time someone posted about the pile of delinquent bills waiting for them at home, when their kid got in trouble at school, or how they gained 10 pounds in the last week?

Rather, most postings are the unrealistic “perfect” images people want us to see. And when viewing these images, it’s easy to get down on yourself and think, “I’m not good enough,” or “I’m not lean enough,” or “I’ll never be perfect like that.” I’m sure you’ve been there. I have too. This negative thinking can lead to lowered self-confidence and less happiness in one’s own body. It can lead to unrealistic expectations of perfection and what our bodies should look like, how are families should look, what kind of car we should drive, or even where we should be dining out. All of this internal competition with our “friends” can lead us to feel unhappy and to believe we are missing something in our life. It keeps us from realizing how beautiful and amazing we really are. This spiral of negative thinking is draining and leads to emotional strain and physical stress on our bodies. These stresses can lead to poor health and lack of motivation to reach one’s goals. This is not exactly a recipe for success, health, or happiness. Physical perfection in the media has been around since the advent of the first printed photograph. Magazines, television, and movies of Hollywood stars are carefully choreographed to make perfection look easy. And while we are all familiar with those doctored photos of models and celebrities who have their own makeup and hair stylists, social media has put pressure on the rest of us to appear

more perfect. So is it any wonder why we are seeing a huge increase in negative body perceptions as a result of social media? One reason for this increasing sense of lowered self-image is that selfies on Facebook or Instagram are often people we know personally. This leads us to be much harder on ourselves and leaves us feeling more pressure to fit in, or compete with others we know. Additionally, we are spending so much time on social media sites – more so than any other Internet activity. And anytime you’re on social media it’s nearly impossible to avoid seeing some sort of selfie. It can actually be quite overwhelming. But here’s the truth about seflies – they are not the image of perfection they may appear to be. Afterall, no one is perfect. Just like models on magazine covers are lighted, covered in makeup, and photoshopped to perfection, selfies aren’t always the raw imagery they may appear to be. It’s all too easy to hide behind filters, Photoshop, or even to spend lots of time taking multiple shots just to get the right one. Be honest…how particular are you about the images you post to your social media sites? I’m sure you’re pretty selective about which images go up and which don’t. So what we’re really seeing is someone’s self-selected good side. We’re seeing them at their best and we’re only seeing what they want us to see. Unfortunately, that NOVEMBER 2017

can even include people doing extreme or unhealthy things to get that perfection. Additionally, selfies neglect what’s really on the inside to instead focus only on the outside. Beauty is more than a perfect body. It’s about who you are and what you stand for. It’s about being yourself and being proud of who you are. So if you find yourself getting sucked into negative thinking when you’re on social media, here are three things you can do: 1. Anytime you hear a negative, selfdefeating thought creep up, replace it with a positive one. Take the time to remind yourself of your accomplishments and your positive qualities. 2. Spend less time on social media. If you find social media is making you question your looks, your value, or your overall confidence, spend less time on it. Instead replace that time with an activity that leaves you energized and makes you feel good about yourself. 3. Stop following pages or people that make you feel less confident about yourself and your own value, and instead follow those who inspire you and remind you of your internal beauty. Follow people that encourage you to focus on your own happiness and health over being perfect. What you focus on is what you invite into your life. You choose the lens you look through in life and what your world will be. Don’t let a picture of someone else take control of how you feel about yourself. DR. GINA MIDYETT, has her PhD in Clinical Psychology from Pepperdine University. She is a licensed mental health counselor, and president of the Suncoast Mental Health Counselor’s Association. There is A Scientific Reason That Cold Weather Could Cause Colds

f you’d like to get technical, a cold can be called nasopharyngitis, rhinopharyngitis or acute coryza. Often, it’s an infection with rhinovirus, but more than 200 other viruses can cause the coughing, sore throat, runny nose and sneezing that we call the common cold. Since colds have long been associated with the chilly, wet weather of winter, that’s likely where they picked up their easily recognized name. More recently, humans have recognized that viruses are the true cause of colds and speculated that the close contact with others when we are forced indoors by the weather might be to blame for the coldseason association. But the old folk wisdom might have some truth: Researchers have just found a way to explain how getting cold might give you a cold.  Rhinoviruses, which are the most common cause for colds, are better able to reproduce at temperatures just below the body’s 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit.  To find out why, a group of scientists studied

how a mouse-adapted cold virus fared in rodent lungs and nasal cavities, reports Monte Morin for the Los Angeles Times. He writes: What they discovered was that when a virus invaded warmer cells, the host cells produced significantly more interferons -- proteins that “interfere” with the spread of a virus by warning healthy cells of its presence and setting off an immune response. In the cooler nasal cavity cells, this warning system was less efficient however, and allowed the virus to spread more easily.  Previously, researchers had discovered that cold viruses prefer the cooler temperatures of the nose, but the new study emphasizes the influence of the host’s response on the virus’s ability to replicate. The researchers published their findings in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.   The discovery “could explain why the rhinovirus causes colds and is less able

to cause more serious lung infections, like influenza does,” says Jonathan Bell, a virologist at the University of Nottingham and not involved in the study, told the BBC. But more immediately relevant for those about to venture outdoors, we now know that covering your nose might actually help it stay cold-free, in more than one way. Getting into drones can be an expensive proposition, especially as a beginner when you run the risk of catastrophic crashes. That's why drones like the Mambo FPV are so great. For one, they're not too expensive and they're small enough to mess around with indoors. It's an anytime, anywhere kind of drone. Parrot also added a camera attachment to the Mambo, so you can get practice becoming the aerial photographer you've always wanted to be.Â

Lego Saturn V Rocket

Much like how Apollo 11 was one of NASA's most daring missions, the same could be said when saddling up to complete this intimidatingly large Lego Saturn V rocket. At almost 2,000 pieces and standing at 36 inches when assembled, it truly is a majestic Lego kit—even if you're not a space nerd. It's likely an 8-hour mission to assemble this alone, so be sure to recruit some friends.

Nerf Rival Nemesis

The worst thing about a nerf gun is the reloading. Fire off a dozen darts, and you're pretty much done. Not so with the Nerf Rival Nemesis. Although this powered Nerf gun uses small balls instead of darts, it's a much more longlasting, gun-blasting high than your traditional Nerf gun. A flywheel shoots these balls and impressive speeds though, so you're going to want to make sure you don't get too carried away with this ball-launching behemoth.

hen you think about trading your car, a million things cross your mind. The process of estimating the correct value and finding the right car to trade-in can become tedious. An old car comes with its set of repairs and expenses. Often, it becomes confusing to estimate the appropriate time to trade-in your old car. However, numerous factors are essential for optimizing its sale value. Obtaining the maximum value for your car is like hitting the iron while it is still hot. With the right set of guidelines, you can easily pre-decide the correct time to bid adieu to your old car for a new one.

you can receive a good amount for your old car as a low debt indicates a strong sense of finance management.

2) End of the Year

Which factors are detrimental in shaping the best time to trade-in your old car?

Ideally, a good time to trade-in your old car would be during the end of the year. It is because most new car models are released in January. Right before the launch of a new car, dealerships wish to get rid of the previous car models. Usually, dealerships offer good discounts on unsold car models in order to create sufficient shelf space for the new models. If you trade-in your car before the launch of a new one, you will be positioned in a good place to bargain and negotiate a price that fits your budget.

1) Current Debt

3) The Age

The current debt on your car plays a significant role in deciding the correct time to trade-in your car. Its ideal time is when you have made more than half of the payments on your auto loan. Additionally,

The best way to figure out the usage of your car is to measure the total number of miles. A good time to trade-in your old car would be when your car has travelled 50,000 miles. In order to obtain the optimum

value for your car, you should trade-in when the odometer reads a total of 30,00040,000 miles. An odometer reading of up to 50,000 miles is ideal as the car would have suffered from low damages and would be in a good working condition.

4) Safety Requirements When you face issues of safety while driving, it is a good indication to trade-in your old car. A new car serves as a reliable option as opposed to an old car that is prone to breakdown. A vehicle report prior to trade-in can heighten your chances of obtaining a better value for your old car. Make the necessary repairs and bear the damages so as to make the most of your trade-in deal. Trading your old car is not a tedious task. Health & Wellness

ARE YOUR SYMPTOMS RELATED TO YOUR FOOD? By Paula Owens At least 80% of my female clients complain of lower abdominal bloating, and 7080% of my male clientele gripe of indigestion or chronic sinus issues.

Did you know?:

• One of the leading causes of obesity is food sensitivity? • 60-80% of the population is sensitive to one or more foods? • Food sensitivities are a primary cause of emotional problems? Are you constantly struggling on reaching or maintaining a healthy weight due to food cravings? Foods you are sensitive to are toxic to your system. If you crave or are addicted to a specific food, you are probably sensitive to it.

Food sensitivities can cause many health ailments and some serious conditions such as lupus or autism. The toxic conditions most commonly associated with food sensitivities are skin rashes and hives, disrupted sleep, constipation, runny nose, itchy eyes and ears, bluish or black tint under the eyes, chronic cough, stiff neck, joint pain, bags under the eyes, sore throat, headache, bad breath, back ache, asthma and sinus congestion. Years ago, Dr. Arthur Coca popularized the “pulse test” for food allergy. He found that some (but definitely not all) allergic individuals have a significant increase in their resting pulse after eating a particular food allergen. Others have observed that eating certain trigger foods causes them to retain fluids, which manifests as a significant weight gain that doesn’t disappear NOVEMBER 2017

by the next morning (like most water-weight gain). Any body system can react to food allergy: Some allergies may affect your pulse or weight, while other allergies don’t affect pulse or weight at all. Food allergy is the reaction of the body’s immune system to a food or food ingredient that it recognizes as “foreign.” Food intolerance/sensitivity is an adverse reaction to a food, food ingredient or additive that does not involve the immune system; it typically involves the digestive system.

The top 8 foods responsible for 90% of food reactions are: 1. Milk & Dairy Products 2. Eggs 3. Sugar

4. Fish & Shellfish 5. Soy 6. Corn 7. Wheat & Gluten 8. Peanuts & Tree Nuts (such as Almonds and Walnuts In addition, many people are intolerant to MSG, food dyes, artificial sweeteners, sulfites and other preservatives, beer, wine and cocktail mixes.

What can you do?

For one week, eliminate all dairy products, corn, eggs, soy, peanuts and wheat. If your symptoms disappear after one week, you need go no further. However, if you still aren’t symptom-free after eliminating all dairy, corn, eggs, soy, peanuts and wheat, additionally avoid any-

thing containing gluten (wheat, rye, barley, oats, kamut, spelt), tomatoes, citrus fruits, shrimp, crab and other shell fish, chocolate, yeast, coffee and all artificial sweeteners(aspartame). Supplements and protein powders with additives and fillers should also be eliminated. If you have persistent health issues that don’t seem to get better no matter what you do, you should consider having a thorough screening done even if you get a negative result on your self-test, or contact me to schedule a consultation. To avoid food sensitivities, it’s important to get into the habit of rotating all foods every day and reading the list of ingredients on all products. I challenge you to eliminate the top 8 culprit foods and let me know how incredibly good you feel and look! Wesley Chapel Magazine 23

What to Do POINSETTIAS: Enjoy one of the most popular indoor holiday plants. Protect it from cold until spring, and then plant it in the garden for next year. COLD PROTECTION: Prepare now to protect tender plants should cold weather threaten. LAWN DISEASE: Continue to watch for brown patch and large patch, fungal diseases that cause areas of grass to turn brown. Since treatment is difficult, prevention with proper cultural practices is key. These diseases become active when the soil temperature, measured 2–4 in. deep, is between 65°F and 75°F and go dormant when the weather warms in May. HOUSEPLANTS: Inspect regularly for pests on indoor plants. Keep in mind that plant-specific temperature, light, and humidity are key to ensuring that indoor plants thrive. SOIL TEST: Consider performing a soil test if plants do not perform as desired or if new plantings are planned. COMPOST/MULCH: Use fallen leaves to provide the carbon ingredient needed for successful composting and also to make a good mulch. LANDSCAPE AND GARDEN PESTS: Continue monitoring and treat as needed. While cooler weather generally means fewer pests, some populations actually increase at this time of year.
