WCM: Can you describe who your typical patient is? DR. BENNETT: My typical patient is wonderful! I have the privilege of treating individuals from the age of 0 to 107. Over time I am honored to meet an immense diversity of individuals from various backgrounds, each with their own story and qualities. Being able to help the many amazing individuals in Wesley Chapel with their skin care is truly an honor. WCM: What percentage of the general population could benefit from your services? DR. BENNETT: Nearly everyone. Skin conditions are among the most common reasons that Americans seek medical care. In particular, we are seeing an increased incidence of melanoma in young people, including those with a history of tanning bed use. A skin cancer screening exam is an easy appointment and can be life-saving.

Wesley Chapel's

Kristen Ng By Danni Matter

A

s children, everyone had that special dream - the goal we hoped to achieve, as we grew older. Whether it was to be a teacher, a singer, or to walk on the moon, we all had our childhood aspirations. This year, 17-year-old Wesley Chapel resident Kristen Ng made a huge step toward realizing hers at the USA Gymnastics Rhythmic National Qualifier in Lake Placid, New York. After putting in the work and advancing through nine levels of skill as a gymnast, Kristen was required to rank in the top 20 out of all the gymnasts competing in order to advance to level 10. In order to do so, however, she would have to go up against others who had already achieved level 10. Therefore, she would have to beat out someone a rank higher than her in order to reach level 10 herself. But Kristen's perseverance and effort paid off – she reached level 10, coming in 17th place in the nation during the qualifying competition. Some gymnasts never reach this level, so this is a major accomplishment in Kristen's gymnastics career. It also meant she would be traveling to the official national

competition in Milwaukee, which took place during the last week of June. Traveling all the way up to Wisconsin with her coach and a fellow gymnast was nothing new to Kristen, as she has traveled previously to various locations around Florida and the United States, and even sometimes out of the country as well for different state and regional competitions. Upon arriving, she met and later engaged in competition with the top 20 rhythmic gymnasts in the nation, including the United States competitor in the Rio Olympics. After a stunning performance, Kristen placed 17th in her very first USA Rhythmic Gymnastics national competition. An incredible feat, but not one achieved by sheer luck. Since she was a seven-year-old student at Seven Oaks Elementary School, Kristen has always had an interest in the sport of gymnastics. Starting out in the field of artistic gymnastics, she struggled for a while with being strong enough for required routines on the beam and bar. However, when she was home, she was always dancing around the house; her mother Angela took notice of both of these things, and decided to let her

12 Wesley Chapel MAGAZINE AUGUST 2017 • To advertise call 813.501.4894

give rhythmic gymnastics a try. The rest was history – Kristen began training for five days a week, four hours a day, while attending elementary school and eventually John Long Middle School. Balancing her life between school and sport has been a challenge for Kristen, but she has shown dedication to both and also names her mother as one of her biggest supporters throughout the years. In middle school, she joined the orchestra as well, and has participated in charity programs such as Big Brother Big Sister and coached rhythmic gymnastics for the Special Olympics. Upon moving up to Wiregrass Ranch High School, Kristen continued to do well in school, still participating in the orchestra, even as her training became more intensive. She now trains every day for several hours after school, then returns home to eat and do homework before going to sleep. Her mother expressed pride in her daughter's dedication especially when she gave up going to junior prom in order to drive four hours to Miami for the Regional Championship. Looking at the contrast between photos of Kristen's friends in

prom dresses and her in a leotard in a competition venue really drove home how hardworking these student athletes are. They don't always participate in the same activities other teenagers do, and Kristen has said most of her friends are in the gym as that is where she spends most of her time (but also noted that her friends outside of the gym are wholly supportive of her as well). But as is clear in this case, what can sometimes seem like an uphill struggle is not for nothing. Kristen expressed that what keeps her going is becoming a better gymnast than she was before; she herself is the only competitor she is worried about beating. That's the motivation that keeps her going through the tough times, and the attitude that earned her a spot in the top 20 rhythmic gymnasts in the nation. Ultimately, Kristen still has a dream – that of landing a spot on the United States National or Olympic Rhythmic Gymnastics Team. She still has some elements to work on before than can become a reality, such as intensive cardio training to improve her leaps, but with both her passion for the sport and the support of her family and friends being so strong, it is clear that Kristen will continue to make leaps and bounds in the field of rhythmic gymnastics.

What to Plant ANNUALS/BEDDING PLANTS: If summer beds need refreshing, try ageratum, coleus, celosia, zinnia, and wax begonia for color into fall. BULBS: Add color, texture, and pattern to the garden with the many varieties of elephant's ear that are available. HERBS: Plant herbs that tolerate the warm temperatures of early fall, such as Mexican tarragon, mint, rosemary, and basil. VEGETABLES: It is hot, but numerous cool-season (as well as warm-season) crops can be planted.

My name is Stephanie and I am the owner of Hair Artistry By Stephanie. I have spent years working in the salon business as an employee. I loved the people I worked for and worked with, however I had always dreamed of owning my own salon and inspiring others in the art of hair. I have started my journey by renting a suite and becoming my own boss of Hair Artistry By Stephanie working in

Visionary Hair Company with other talented individuals who also work independently as owners of their own companies. I am extremely artistic and love seeing people experiencing the glow of leaving my salon with a gorgeous new look or freshening up their cut and color . I find great joy in making women feel pampered and beautiful, as well as getting the opportunity to know and talk with a variety of different and unique individuals.

What to Do LAWN PROBLEMS: Continue to monitor the lawn for signs of insect damage. Fall armyworms, chinch bugs, mole crickets, and sod webworms are still active this month. PERENNIALS AND BULBS: Divide and replant perennials and bulbs that have grown too large or need rejuvenation. Add organic matter to new planting areas and monitor water needs during establishment. IRRIGATION: Check that irrigation systems are providing good coverage and operating properly before summer rains taper off.

CITRUS: Fertilize citrus with a balanced fertilizer either this month or in October. If the weather has been rainy, do not use soluble nitrogen as rains will leach it from the soil too quickly. FERTILIZER BANS: Some municipalities in central Florida prohibit the application of fertilizer to lawns and/or landscape plants during the summer rainy season (June–September). See if such an ordinance exists in your area. VEGETABLE GARDENS: Prepare the fall vegetable garden if not done in August. Using transplants from your local garden center will get the garden off to a fast start, but seeds provide a wider variety from which to choose.

esley Chapel student athletes are finding success in many of their respective sports, even on state and national levels. Putting Wesley Chapel on the map for Boys' Soccer is Beaudouin "Beau" Taillefer, who is a member of the Tampa Bay United Soccer Club 2001 Premier Boys Team. Many on the team have been playing together for a number of years now, but Beau joined the team this year. They quickly found their momentum, and worked hard to win the title of Florida State Cup Champions in years 2014, 2015 and 2017. Although the team did reach Regional level in 2014 and 2015, but not national level, this year was different. Lead by head coach Kelvin Jones, the team won every single game in the state as well as the regional competitions this year, with seven wins in the State Cup Tournament, and six in the Southern Regionals. This huge success opened the door

for the team to continue on to the U.S. Youth Soccer League Nationals, meaning they would have to travel all the way out to Dallas, Texas to compete against the top youth soccer teams in the nation. Over 10,000 teams competed in various State Cup competitions across 55 state associations in 14 different age brackets, all leading up to the Nationals. This was the first time the boys had advanced to the regional level, not to mention national, so the pressure was on. But they had been working and playing together for the past four years, and had developed a unique relationship as a team. They were on a roll this year, and did not seem like they would be stopping anytime soon. Having beat out teams from 16 different states, and undefeated so far in the state and regional competitions, the team went into the Nationals ready to win. And win they did - after an intense competition during their final game, the team came away with a score of 1-0 and a national victory. This is an unprecedented event for teams of this age bracket in the state of Florida, as previously none had ever won a National Title. But even from the beginning, when the team first came together, coaches and staff at the Tampa Bay United Soccer

Club could tell that this was going to be a special group of kids. Even seeing pictures of the many adventures they've had over the years, it is easy to tell the team has a special bond that is not always present between athletes. With the efforts of these players, their parents, and the coaches working in tandem, it is easy to see how they have had multiple successes over the years, including various leagues and showcases such as the Directors League (finished 1st place), the Southeast Region III Premier League (finished 1st place), CASL Boys Showcase Champion, The IMG Cup Champion, and The Disney Showcase Champion. Beau Taillefer, who attends Wesley Chapel High School, plays the Forward position on the Tampa Bay United Soccer Club Team, and is also a talented striker who scored 16 goals for his school-based team in 2016, and 31 goals with 6 assists with TBU. In helping win the National Title, Beau has a bright future ahead in the sport along with his teammates. We as a community have much to be proud of concerning these boys, considering how hard they worked and how successful their efforts have been. We may even see some of the team members on a national soccer team someday!

RECIPE 30 Minute Skillet Chicken Caprese

Prep time: 5 mins | Cook time: 25 mins | Total time: 30 mins This 30 minute skillet chicken caprese is the perfect weeknight meal. It's quick, easy and delicious! Author: Natalie Yield: 3 large chicken breasts

Ingredients

1½ tsp. herbes de provence ½ tsp. garlic powder ½ tsp. paprika 1/8 tsp. cayenne pepper ½ tsp. salt ¼ tsp. black pepper 3 chicken breasts (boneless, skinless) 2 tbsp. olive oil 3 thick slices mozzarella cheese 1 c. cherry tomatoes ¼ c. basil leaves, chiffonade 2 tbsp. quality aged balsamic vinegar*

Directions

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. In a small prep bowl, combine herbes de provence, garlic powder, paprika, cayenne pepper, salt and black pepper. Season the chicken breasts on both sides. Set a large oven-proof skillet over medium-high heat. Add the olive oil. When the oil is hot, add the chicken and sear on both sides until golden brown, about 3 minutes on each side. Place skillet into preheated oven and bake until the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165 degrees, about 20-22 minutes. Remove from the oven and top the chicken breasts with cheese, return to oven and broil 2-3 minutes or until melty. Remove and top with tomatoes and basil, drizzle with balsamic vinegar and serve immediately. Notes *I use Fattoria Estense Aceto Balsamico de Moderno (aged 8 years). -You can also use any other kind of tomato, just slice it thinly and place it over the cheese. FALL FASHION TRENDS 2017 By Rachel Ward

W

ho's ready for fall? I know here in Florida it's hard to start thinking about fall because it's still so hot. But, in fashion the season has already commenced. If you've visited a mall lately you know that all the summer items are on sale and fall is already occupying the racks, front and center. Since I last wrote I spent almost 2 weeks in Israel, a weekend in Miami and I'm currently flying home from a jewelry show in Vegas! I spent two days in Sin City meeting with manufacturers, viewing new jewelry lines for fall and ordering, ordering and ordering some more! Who remembers the biggest trend last fall? If you answered "chokers", you are right! Not only did chokers hit the scene in a huge way for Fall 2016, these '80 inspired styles carried through to Spring and Summer 2017. However, that trend has quickly died down. In fact, the companies at the show weren't even displaying chokers in their Fall 2017 lines. When I attended the same show last year I ordered mainly chokers. This year, there was not one choker on my order forms. Moving forward to Fall 2017 we will see one trend from a couple years ago that

this fall we will see a trend that was just trending a couple short years ago: the tassel. Yep, the tassel is back and it's back strong. I ordered tassel necklaces and earrings in every shape, size and color. These long tassel necklaces come in beads, suede, leather, fabric and silk. They come one color or ombré. They're being produced on metal, natural stone and crystal chains. Two hot colors for the fall that every company is producing is burgundy {perfect for FSU fans} and navy. I was thrilled to see navy so strong for fall because I love me some jeans, and navy jewelry is the perfect compliment to denim. Let's take a closer look at some accessory trends for Fall 2017:

Earrings

Earrings are making a strong comeback this fall. We will see longer, chunkier earrings this fall rather than the dainty earrings and ear crawlers of past seasons. These earrings will have tassels and feathers and make enough of a statement that you can go sans necklace

Pearls

Pearls are always popular but this season offers edgier pearl pieces than the classic pieces of the past. Even if you're not a fan of pearls, you may be this season because they're coming layered, crystallized and just all around edgier making the vibe more trendy than classic

has made a HUGE comeback alongside a couple other trends that are sure to make waves. I've been in the jewelry biz for over 15 years and it's commonplace for trends to come back around, however it's usually many years later after the initial introduction. Despite normal routine, 20 Wesley Chapel MAGAZINE AUGUST 2017 • To advertise call 813.501.4894

Tassels

Long necklaces are back in and chokers are out. Dainty, long layered necklaces will be a big hit this season but the main necklace trend we will see is long chains with tassels at the end. Like

aforementioned, they will come in a variety of fabrics and metals in numerous different colors. They will add the perfect oomph to any outfit

Feathers

Feathers have already hit the streets of LA and are a big trend making their way to us (Florida is always a little behind in the fashion department). Feathers are being mixed with metals on necklaces and earrings for a very boho chic vibe Other than the above, natural stones are still in and will carry through Fall 2017. So, don't worry, you can still rock your arm party! If you don't buy anything else this season, at least purchase a tassel necklace. It will go with everything in your closet and you'll be right on trend. If you want to see all the fabulous jewelry I purchased in Vegas plus much, much more be sure to join my private Facebook group by searching "Gemara's Gems & Rachel Gemara" (be sure to type in the whole thing) and click on "Join Group". I can't wait to see you in cyberspace. Keep on looking fab, my fellow fashionistas. If you ever want to read about something specific, please send me a message at rgemara@hotmail.com. I would love to hear from you! Until next time, spread light and love. xoxo Rachel Rachel Ward owns a jewelry biz & inspirational t-shirt line. Skate Odyssey & United Skates 5121 N. Armenia Ave. Tampa, 33603 813-876-5826

40 Year Anniversary Party

By Danni Matter

T

hose who have lived in the Wesley Chapel and Tampa Bay areas for a long time have watched it grow and change, developing to match the advancement of the world around us. Over the last 40 years, fads and styles have come and go, technology has come a long way from where it was, and time has made some of us a bit older than we recall being before. However, there is one Tampa Bay activity that came around many decades ago but has withstood the test of time – Roller Skating. On July 1st, United Skates Roller Skating Rink held a Gold Skate Reunion both for their veterans and those who grew up with Skate Odyssey Skating Rink, which closed officially in 1997. The occasion was the 40th anniversary of the opening of Skate Odyssey, which was established in 1977 and immediately became a hip spot for the young people of Tampa and the surrounding areas. Although some of those who attended may have moved on from the sport or left the area, many of those kids showed up this year at United Skates to celebrate the

anniversary of a place that was so meaningful to them. Speaking to some of these attendees, I found that some had kept up roller skating over the course of their lives, and some had come back to relive their younger years and were re-learning the "Odyssey Skate Bounce", the signature skating style that developed among the patrons of Skate Odyssey. I also heard many stories about memorable nights at Skate Odyssey – during a period of time in Florida from the 1970's to 1980's, individuals under 21 years old were not allowed into any bars or nightclubs, even if they were 18 years of age. Therefore "Adult Night" at Skate Odyssey flourished as a hangout spot for young adults who could not participate in other forms of nightlife. One story involved the owner of Skate Odyssey, Mr. Hinton, who would gauge the success of any particular night by the amount

28 Wesley Chapel MAGAZINE AUGUST 2017 • To advertise call 813.501.4894

of beer cans he picked up out of the parking lot afterwards. Those who were younger teens at the time spoke of

"growing up" in Skate Odyssey – there would be all night skates where teens could hang out and pull an all-nighter with their friends while roller skating, and their parents knew they would be in a safe environment. Unfortunately, when the law changed to allow those 18 and over into nightclubs, Adult Skate Nights began to die off. Skate Odyssey first closed in the 1980's, but reopened for a while after that. But it no longer enjoyed the success it had in its heyday, and eventually was bought out by a car dealership in 1996. I myself never got to see the glory that was this skating rink, but I was told by several that it was enormous, bigger than any other skating rink in the area. And its community left such a profound effect on those who did know it that they came back to celebrate

its legacy after so many years. The event was packed full, with lots of fun decade-themed costumes and outfits. Lots of those who have been skating at United Skates roller rink for many years attended as well, including Dave "Flash" Morgan. Dave is a DJ who works for the local radio station Q105, which plays an array of different music ranging from the 1970's to the 1990's. He told me about how United Skates helped him get a start on his DJ career – on his 14th birthday, he DJed for the very first time at United Skates in Tampa. Since then, he never stopped, and DJs events around the area to this day. He came back to DJ at the Gold Skate Reunion event along with other veterans such as Jimmy Joslin, Dennis Deserio, and Jayme McRoberts. United Skates has quite the history in this area as well, having opened originally in 1960 under the name Skate Arena. It

was originally owned by the father of famous comedian Gallagher, but eventually changed ownership and became Tampa Skating Center, before finally transforming into the skating rink we know today. The tradition of roller skating is deep in the roots of many of us who grew up in Tampa, even if we weren't around when it was at its peak popularity. I myself grew up attending United Skates, and my mother (a Tampa native as well) told me many stories about her experiences as a teenager there. Today, United Skates hosts adult nights on Sunday and Wednesday, which are flourishing once again. Both young and old come out to show off their skills, learn new ones, and meet others who share their love for roller skating. The positive environment persists, and the people there are some of the kindest you'll meet. Overall, the outlook for roller skating seems to be a good one, and will likely continue to be a part of the heritage of our area for many years to come.
