Artist and Wesley Chapel resident Marcia Baldwin is a prolific painter who has spent years capturing nature on canvas. While only living in the Wesley Chapel area for about 2 years she is settling in and making this area her new home.

Art has always been a passion of mine. I knew from a very early age that art was going to be a strong influence in my life and that I wanted to know as much about art as I could possibly learn. I still strive to learn something new every day. It takes practice and patience to be a full time artist and I am finally able to devote one hundred percent of my professional life to my studio work. After many years working in and around art, making a living as an advertising designer, art teacher, art consultant, photographic artisan and many other niches, I finally opened my art studio to the dedication of purely fine art. I am a trained artist, receiving a BFA and a MFA in the seventies and eighties, respectively. I loved the years I put forth to formal art training. It is invigorating to be around people with that same passion to learning and exploring the creative and problem solving side of your personality. The people who share this passion greatly influence your thought patterns about your art work. It is really great to see the different outcomes from the various people when working on a creative project. We are all looking at the same thing, painting or sculpting or drawing, but each individual will see it a little different and the creation of beautiful works, each individually unique. It is truly amazing. For myself, I love oil painting. I love animals and flowers and nature itself. I believe that I was given a talent by God to share His beauty about the world through the use of paint and canvas. I try to relate the love of nature and His Blessings through my art. I hope that the collectors of my work can be touched in some way to “Stop and Smell the Roses” for a moment and reflect on the joy and beauty that has been given to us each day. I was raised in Louisiana, a very beautiful state, working and living on the shores of a lake surrounded by huge tall pine trees and stately southern live oaks. Nature is bountiful. Foxes play and romp across my front lawn. Squirrels and birds hop from one feeder to the next. Wildflowers and flowering trees such as redbuds and dogwood are a blanket of beauty through undergrowth among the trees. It is truly a blessing that I have been given this time to work in my art studio and be surrounded with this serenity. I hope that the passion I have for art and the passion I have to share nature’s beauty is reflected in my work. 8 Wesley Chapel MAGAZINE JUNE 2017 • To advertise call 813.501.4894

MOSI’s Rockets’ Red Glare Festival Launches

FACELIFT SPECIALIST Surgical or Non-Surgical

Discover the science of fireworks, then build rockets and send them soaring more than 100 feet into the sky at MOSI. Leading up to Independence Day, you’ll be able to get hands-on with science that’s as American as Apple π at the Museum of Science & Industry! MOSI’s Rockets’ Red Glare Festival continues June 24 & 25, and July 1 & 2. Paper rocket launching fun will be held on every weekend day during the festival, led by the staff of MOSI’s Idea Zone makerspace. Plus, at various times on festival days, live demonstrations will give you an up-close look into the science that makes fireworks light up the sky, led by MOSI’s STEAM Team (STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math). “Our giant summer experience Cardboard Space Adventures has been a huge hit, with families coming to MOSI and using their imaginations to explore and build a whole galaxy of ideas. This festival is a way to inspire even more of that creativity during the three weekends from Father’s Day through the Fourth of July,” said Grayson Kamm, MOSI Communications Director. MOSI’s Rockets’ Red Glare Festival is included with MOSI admission, as is MOSI’s summer exhibit Cardboard Space Adventures, where families help create a huge outpost in outer space, made out of cardboard — exploring a towering space station, alien base, and maze; building cardboard machines; and even playing a giant Space Invasion video game using cardboard game controllers.

Pasco/State Exam Scores Climb

Land O’ Lakes, FL – (June 8, 2017) – Pasco County Schools saw the percentage of students overall who are considered proficient increase by three percentage points over 2016 in both English language arts (ELA) and mathematics, moving up from 52 percent proficient to 55 percent proficient in ELA (3rd – 10th), and from 54 percent proficient to 57 percent proficient in math (FSA and EOC 3rd – 8th). The district’s focus this year was to improve the scores of its 23 “Differentiated Accountability” schools, which are graded, non-charter schools the state has identified for escalating interventions, support and monitoring based on their school grade history. Overall, the district’s struggling schools generally saw improvement in both ELA and math at every grade level, with the exception of 5th grade.

“I am very pleased with what I have seen today,” said Superintendent Kurt Browning. “We’re on a positive trajectory, which can be attributed to our professional development, curriculum aligned with Florida Standards, and the very hard work of our teachers and students.” Parents can check their students’ results on myStudent. Those who don’t have an account can establish one by going to the district website,, and clicking on the Parents link at the top, and then on Check Grades/Attendance.

Travel Essentials ----H

ey y’all! It’s summer, summer, summertime.... You know what that means, HOT, HOT, HOT. Every summer, especially in hot climates like Florida we see more tans and less clothes. People are dressing more casual in tanks & cut off shorts. Temps are hotter, colors are brighter, hair is beach wavy-er! Schools out (thank goodness I don’t have to pack lunches for a couple months!), vacations are on the horizon and everyone just seems happier in the summer, don’t you agree? There’s something about lazy summer mornings, sunshine, fruity candle scents, less work and more family time that just uplifts the mood and helps melt the stress away. What vacations are you looking forward to this summer? I have a few planned but the biggest adventure of all will be my trip to Israel a few days after this article is published. I am traveling with my dad who will turn 70 a week prior to our departure. We are taking an 11-night guided tour which is guaranteed to be life changing. I’m normally one to spend days on end planning out my vacations but not

this time. The company plans it all for us and the control freak in me is totally OK with that, just this one time! The only concern I have is WHAT TO PACK? It’s the million dollar question. If it was a typical summer vacation I would know exactly what to pack but since it’s to the Holy Land, I’m stressing a little. From what I’ve read and been told, I need to be “covered” in all the Holy places. Covered as in long sleeves and pants, in 90 degree weather, say what?? I wouldn’t consider myself a conservative dresser so packing for this trip will raise some challenges. However, as with all trips, there are some essentials that I must not leave home without.

Travel Essentials: 1. Scarf - It may seem weird to take a scarf on a summer vacation, but it’s one of my must haves because it doubles as a blanket. I’m typically cold on planes plus I’ve been known to take a nap. So, I cozy up with my scarf, earphones playing some old school R & B and I doze off to la-la-land. Plus, in Israel my

By Rachel Ward scarf will double as something to cover my arms with in the holy places (as opposed to dying from a heat stroke in long sleeves).

2. Rose water - I’m obsessed! My skin is in a constant state of dehydration because I don’t drink enough water so I take my rose water spray everywhere. It smells heavenly and just a couple spritzes on my face throughout the day rejuvenates my skin. I love Mario Badescu facial spray with aloe, herbs and rose water. 3. Candle - no matter where I travel, whether staying with friends or in a hotel, I love the ambiance and smell of a candle. If in a hotel a candle will make it feel more like home and remove that “hotel” scent. 4. Jewelry - I own a jewelry biz so whittling down the jewelry selection can be challenging. The trick is to take ONE color scheme, in clothes and jewelry. I pack one or two necklaces, a pair of studs and hoops and a stack of bracelets that will match all my outfits.

Other essentials that you shouldn’t leave home without: Camera and charger Neck pillow (if flying) Phone charger (put in your carry on in case you have a layover or a cancelled flight)

Journal - if you’re creative or enjoy writing don’t leave home without pen and paper Hand sanitizer I hope these tips help you on your packing checklist. Also, always leave a little room in your suitcase (or take an extra bag) for the shopping you will do while traveling! If you have additional travel must haves, I would love to hear them at May everyone have an amazing summer full of sunshine, laughter, love, adventure and making memories. HAPPY SUMMER! Xoxo ~ Rachel

5. Bluetooth speaker - I LOVE music. No matter where I am or who I’m with, I want music playing. I always travel with a speaker so I can play Pandora from my phone.

Book - Don’t ever leave for any trip

with a good read. I don’t know about you but when I’m home life is so busy that I never

have the opportunity to read. So, I cherish the free time I have to read when I’m traveling.

7. Snacks - whether road tripping or flying, I always have snacks. Also, I pack additional snacks in my suitcase. Usually it’s protein bars, nuts and crackers.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Legislation to enact Florida’s medical marijuana constitutional amendment is headed to the desk of Gov. Rick Scott. The Senate and House approved the bill during June 9th’s final day of the special session. The House passed it 108-9 before the Senate voted 29-6. Both chambers reached agreement on Wednesday that there would be a cap of 25 dispensaries per medical marijuana treatment center and that there wouldn’t be a sales tax. The bill still bans smoking despite amendment supporters saying it is written into the language. The legislation allows patients who suffer chronic pain related to one of 10 qualifying conditions to receive either low-THC cannabis or full strength medical marijuana. The amendment states that laws must be in place by July 3 with those enacted by October.

Top 10 Interior Decorator Tips Interior Decorating is not a science. There are no rules or laws to follow, on the contrary, the more creativity and imagination that is used the better.  However, there are a few principles that can help guide your interior decorating projects towards success.

Tips from Mar-Go Interiors, Wesley Chapel Interior Decorator: 1. Choose paint color last.  Often homeowners want to choose a wall color first before moving in.  This situation is really not ideal because paint comes in so many different tones and shades.  It is best to choose a paint color that complements your furniture, rug, artwork and everything else that you plan on having in the room under the lighting that will be in the room as well.

Using some of these guidelines can help you with a starting point as you decorate and furnish your home. At Mar-Go Interiors we offer a full range of Hunter Douglas products, custom window treatments, window fashions, custom draperies as well as interior design services.  Our interior designers in Wesley Chapel are proud to be Serving Wesley Chapel Florida and the Tampa area.

2. Do not overcrowd a room.  Often less is more – spend your money on higher quality pieces and leave more space to maneuver in.  Your rooms will look much better if your furniture pieces are not fighting for attention.

2648 Cypress Ridge Blvd., Ste. 104 Wesley Chapel, FL 813-991-9660

Mar-Go Interiors

3. Artwork should be hung at the correct height. The rule of thumb for hanging artwork is that the center of each piece is 57 – 60 inches from the floor.  The average eye level of most humans is 57 inches.  It is very easy to hang artwork too high if the ceilings are high.   4.  Three ways to arrange furniture on a rug.  The 3 basic ways you can place furniture on your rug is All On, All Off or Front On.   5.  Be Careful with themes.   It is very easy to get caught up in a theme and end up with a room that lacks individuality.  You can achieve a coastal look by choosing original artwork, paint colors and fabrics without doing the typical Cape Cod look with anchors and sailboats.   6.  Start with a focal point.  It is very helpful to choose a focal point, something that you love that you can build a room around.  Your focal point could be an art piece, a mantel, or a headboard.  No matter what you choose it needs to be something that will draw the attention of visitors.   7.  Be willing to let go of items.  If something is not working in the room you must be willing to let it go.

Custom Designs for your Lifestyle

8. Vary scale and proportion.  Things may be either too big or too small for a space.  Make sure that you are always varying the proportion and scale of items.  In artwork arrangement, another rule of thumb is that groups of threes and fives make for pleasing to the eye arrangements than do even numbers.

9. Layer lighting  Layered lighting in a room can make a huge statement.  Highlighting artwork, a lit backsplash, or lighting cabinet interiors add drama and interest to any space.  Professional interior designers use lighting to create variety and interest.

2648 Cypress Ridge Blvd. Ste. 104. Wesley Chapel

10. Take Chances  Creativity can give a space personality.  Don’t be afraid to be bold and make a statement.

Nuisance Wildlife Dealing with Pests

It is impossible to live in Florida without encountering wildlife daily. Many of these experiences are enjoyable, but some can be unpleasant. Negative interactions with our wild neighbors can result in injury, property damage, and minor nuisances. Some of our frustrations with wildlife can be eliminated by properly preventing situations before they occur, while others may require other forms of management.

• You have a hundred times greater chance of being in a highway accident than being bitten by a venomous snake. • Snake-bite-related deaths occur in Florida at a rate of approximately one death every four or five years—less than deaths from lightning strikes. • Snakes prefer shaded areas where they might come across prey like mice and toads. • Snakes will not charge or chase after people. Their typical reaction is to crawl away and hide. • When threatened, some snakes will hiss, shake their tail, and even try to bite an intimidating object.

Prevention and Control

Most people do not want snakes (especially venomous snakes) in their homes or on their properties. You can deter snakes from your yard and home by eliminating firewood stacks, debris, boards, or other objects close to the ground that create cool, dark shelters and prey habitat areas. Remove snakes from buildings by placing glueboards or funneled minnow traps in snake-traveled areas, such as along walls.
