Evolving from a “bedroom community” to a highly desirable, technology-driven area where residents can live, work and play. Expected to have an economic impact of over $10 billion and create 90,000 jobs.

What is the Connected City project? The Connected City Corridor coming to Pasco County, just north of Wesley Chapel, is a State-initiated pilot program that is unique to Pasco County, and will be the first planned community to be built from the ground-up with a fiber network that will provide the fastest Gigabit internet service in the country. The Gigabit internet service will be made available to all residents, businesses, and institutional users in the Connected City, and become a catalyst to attract start-up technologies and other businesses to locate here, thus generating high-paying jobs to Pasco County residents, while also providing a unique, contemporary lifestyle for those who choose to reside in this master- planned mixed-use suburban and urban design setting. It is the intent of local government to encourage the creation of connected-city corridors that facilitate the growth of high-technology industry and innovation through partnerships that support research, marketing, workforce, and entrepreneurship. It is also to provide for a locally controlled, comprehensive plan for such projects that are designed to achieve a cleaner, healthier environment; limit urban sprawl by promoting diverse but interconnected communities; provide a range of intergenerational housing types; protect wildlife and natural areas; assure the efficient use of land and other resources; create

quality communities of a design that promotes alternative transportation networks and travel by multiple transportation modes; and enhance the prospects for the creation of jobs.

Where is the Connected Cities Corridor located and how were the borders determined? The new community will be located between Wesley Chapel and San Antonio, bordered by SR 52 on the north, Overpass Road on the south, I-75 on the west, and Curley Road on the east. Pasco County was approached by Metro Development Group in 2014 with the idea of creating the Connected City and the discussions of the boundary focused around the vicinity bounded by Interstate 75, State Road 52, Curley Road (as the Western boundary of the Villages of Pasadena Hills) and Overpass Road. As plans for economic development through high technology within the Connected City became more feasible, the undeveloped portions of the existing industrial park located north of State Road 52 were also included into the boundary. 4) What is the Pasco County’s Role in the project? Metro Development Group, a private development company, desired to partner with Pasco County to establish the Connected City Special Planning Area.

6 Wesley Chapel MAGAZINE MARCH 2017 • To advertise call 813.501.4894

Pasco County was specifically selected by the State legislature to implement this Pilot Program, which is being pursued as a public-private partnership with Metro Development Group. The private partner is funding the third-party planning consultant expenses for the Pilot Program implementation phase, and the County as public partner has committed substantial staff time and resources to the regulatory approval process. The Pasco County Economic Development Council will also play a critical role in the business and employment generation aspects of the Pilot Program.

The “Connected City Corridor” has been designated as the first planned “Smart Gigabit Community” in the U.S. to be built from the ground up with a fiber network providing

GIGABIT internet access.

Why is a private partner necessary? In all other U.S. cities or communities where Gigabit fiber network technology has been offered, the local government was required to invest millions of dollars in the infrastructure requirements to obtain such technological access, and also was required to expend all of the planning costs for implementation of the community plans to accommodate it. In this case, the private partner itself has made the investment arrangements to bring the Gigabit technology to the Connected City Corridor in Pasco, at an expense of several million dollars, and also has agreed to fund the third-party planning, feasibility, marketing, and other expenses required to implement the Pilot Program. Without the private partner’s investment in this partnership, the County would not be able to allocate the above resources and funds to implement the Pilot Program.

“This is a new, exciting, futuristic type of development and I’m glad Pasco County is embracing it,” Commission Chairwoman Kathryn Starkey.

Florida Hospital Tampa General Hospital Metro Development A highlight of this new project is an area exclusively dedicated to the advancement of healthcare and wellness in a health focused campus. Leading this initiative in partnership with Metro are two highly respected healthcare leaders, Florida Hospital and Tampa General Hospital, who together will operate as West Florida Health for this new venture in the Connected City. With a 10-year master plan, this wellness district is scheduled to include advanced research facilities, an innovation center, medical hospital complete with med-spa and a health and performance institute. By bringing the digital and physical worlds together, modern medicine will be at the forefront of this community. Examples include tele-medicine, streamlined patient-focused medical facilities, expansion of at-home health options, and the ability for healthcare professionals to collaborate with experts seamlessly around the globe. “At Florida Hospital, we believe innovative partnerships are key to transforming health care. Together, we are creating a wellness-destination that will combine high speed

technology and the next generation of medical services. It’s an exciting time for the Pasco County community,” said Mike Schultz, President & CEO Florida Hospital West Florida Division. “This new wellness district will make a significant impact on growing Pasco County’s workforce with high-level, sophisticated jobs, which we expect to fuel tremendous economic growth in the area,” said Bill Cronin, President & CEO of the Pasco Economic Development Council. “Our goal isn’t to improve upon what has been done before in the health and wellness industry, but to totally reimagine it using technology to enhance people’s lives,” said Kartik Goyani, Vice President of Operations with Metro Development Group and the visionary behind the Connected City. “We are excited to work with Florida Hospital and Tampa General to make this area a destination for health and human performance. This is one of many partnerships that we plan to establish with local and national organizations to help put Pasco County on the map as a live-work-play community.”

chieving a high standard of performance through hard work and fair play is what PROtential SPORTS stands for. It’s all about being the best you can be and having integrity. What separates them from others in the industry is that PROtential SPORTS focuses on more than just the physi-

cal and technical aspect of sports, they equally focus on building core values and character. Before each session begins, the coaches introduce the word of the week. Each word of the week is explained and the children are encouraged to identify the meaning of the word and talk about how they have experienced the word in different scenarios. Words such as, teamwork, sportsmanship, respect, trust, and gratitude. Their coaches emphasize the importance of following directions as well as teaching leadership skills, as these are key to becoming a successful athlete, as well as in life. At the end of each week, their coaches name

the MVP for each camp and he/she receives a prize. This positive reinforcement gives the campers motivation and the eagerness to succeed in putting forth their best effort to accomplish their goals. PROtential SPORTS coaches are re-certified yearly to ensure quality in training. They also receive continuing training to meet high standards and expectations. PROtential SPORTS spring program includes the NFL Flag Football League, March 4th – April 29th 2017. The NFL Flag Football program operates under a license granted by the National Football League. It plays a sixon-six style of game, which is known for exciting play-making on the uncrowded gridiron. Their NFL Flag traveling team exceeded all expectations when competing at this year’s PRO BOWL 2017 in Orlando, FL, representing the Buccaneers. The goal is to set up a competitive traveling team which will have to qualify to participate at the championship games. The players were given the opportunity of a lifetime when chosen to assist with carrying the flag onto the PRO BOWL field. If you are interested in this experience for your child, all participants will be chosen from their spring and Fall NFL Flag Football Leagues. PROtential SPORTS is looking forward to hosting their annual Awards Banquette on May 21st, where all of their campers will receive end of year rewards, and welcome you to attend and be a part of an amazing event celebrating the campers and families – this also gives you the opportunity to be among the first to register for the new school year 2017-

Summer break is here and they are in full speed planning for their annual PROtential SPORTS Summer Camps which will again offer a fun-filled mix of sports routines, swimming, and field trips. They encourage you to sign up in time, as their camps fill up quickly. Also on their agenda for 2017 is creating AAU teams for every major sport. They want to give your children the opportunity to train in their sport of choice and to be able to

compete on a national competitive level. Once planning is finalized, they will be sending out further information regarding which sports, practice schedule etc. If you or anybody in your community have children that would be interested in building a team on an AAU level you can email PROtential SPORTS the child’s name, age and sport interested in. Stay Informed! Opt-in to Receive Text Notifications

Pasco schools make every effort to share information with parents, and they have several methods for doing so. The district’s parent notification system, used by schools to keep parents informed of upcoming events and safety issues, is capable of sending text messages, but parents have to opt in to receive them. The notification system also can send emails, so make sure your school has your correct email address in your student’s records.

Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel Continues to Grow

Hospital adds new technology and announces additional plans for expansion

lorida Hospital Wesley Chapel recently completed a massive expansion which included 111,993 square feet of new construction and 10,834 square feet of renovated space. The expansion adds 62 new private patient rooms, four operating rooms, 17 emergency rooms and a second Heart Catheterization Lab. As the hospital has grown, Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel has maintained a focus on bringing the latest technology and services to our community. The hospital recently added new surgical technology – Intuitive Surgical’s da Vinci® Xi™ and Stryker’s Mako. The da Vinci® Xi™ System is a fourarmed robot that assists physicians in performing minimal invasive surgeries. With this technology, Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel now offers single-site robotic surgeries where the only incision is made through the belly button for procedures like hysterectomies and gallbladder removal. The Mako robotic-arm assisted technology for partial knee and total hip replacement procedures offers the potential for a higher level of patient-specific implant alignment and positioning. The technology allows surgeons to

create a patient-specific 3D plan and perform joint replacement surgery using a surgeon controlled robotic-arm that helps the surgeon execute the procedure with a high degree of accuracy. Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel isn’t done yet. Coming this year, the hospital has announced that it is building a new 10,880-square-foot women’s health center on its campus in the Wellness Plaza building which houses its’ 50,000 sq. ft. community Health & Wellness Center, and a full-service ER in Central Pasco. The women’s health center will be dedicated to serving women of all ages and stages of life and will include healthcare services in a concierge environment. The center will feature female physicians in a variety of specialties, imaging services (mammography, stereotactic breast biopsies, DEXA bone density scan, and ultrasound), and pelvic floor therapy. It will

also house a spa offering massages and facials and support services for cancer patients. Opening in late 2017, the offsite emergency room will be located on SR 54 just east of the Suncoast Parkway in Pasco County. The hospital recently purchased the land and expects to begin construction soon. The 18,000-square-foot ER will have 24 beds and staffed with board-certified emergency medicine physicians and highly trained nurses who specialize in emergency medicine. The ER will include onsite imaging services including X-ray, ultrasound, and CT-scan and lab services. While expanding to meet the needs of the community and continuing to provide the latest medical technology, Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel remains focused on its patient-centered approach, earning it various awards for clinical care and patient satisfaction from multiple industry organizations with several of them placing the hospital in the top 5% of hospitals across the entire country. g n i n n Ru e c a R e th Rachel Does a MARATHON

o, I just completed the Disney Princess half marathon (13.1 miles). No, I’m not a runner and no, I did not train (I’m regretting that now because I can barely walk!). Honestly, I forgot I even signed up for the marathon until about two weeks ago. Who does that? My friend had me sign up forever ago so I totally forgot! Granted, she’s a runner. In fact, she went to college on a track scholarship. Me, not so much! I haven’t ran more than 15 minutes at a time since I was in college, which was over 20 years ago. You’re probably wondering why I committed to not only a 3 am wake up call the day of the race but also a 13.1 mile journey to my near death? Just because. Why the heck not? What do you desire to do in your life that you haven’t done yet because you’re bound by fear? In fact, you’re so fearful, you won’t even take baby steps towards your goal. You are caught up in the perfect plan and timing. You’re analyzing so much that you become paralyzed (paralysis by analysis). You get tangled in the details. You want everything to be perfect. I’m only speaking from experience because this has been me. A perfectionist. A everything-has-to-be-lined-up-and-in-perfectorder-for-anything-to-happen type of person. I’ve found this way of living has caused me to procrastinate and then it’s had me stuck. I want to be unstuck. This year is a year of just doing and worrying about the details after the fact. My wise friend describes it as “imperfect actions”. A girl in my boot camp said “Think It. Do It.” So simply stated but it really resonated with me when she said that. How many times a day do we think “I need to call so and so” or “I need to send thank you cards” or “I need to plan my next family vacation”? Again, speaking from experience. Now, when I think of something I need to do, like Nike says, I JUST DO IT! Don’t wait, don’t

procrastinate, just think it and do it. Back to the marathon. People have said “well, you crossed it off your bucket list”. Funny thing is, it was never even on my bucket list! Not for one second have I ever had a desire to run any race, let alone a half marathon. But, my friend asked me to do it because she wanted that memory with her daughters and best friends. So, I said “yes”. And I’m glad I did. It wasn’t even about completing the race and getting the super heavy, crazy cool medal, it was about saying “yes” to a new adventure, stepping out of my comfort zone, having faith in myself that I could do it and making memories along the way. I was asked what my mentality was about running the race when I didn’t train at all. How was I not bound by fear & “what ifs”? I just SHOWED UP. Showing up is big. You got this! Just take the first step and show up.

Practical tips for stepping out of your comfort zone: Dream big What is something you’ve always wanted to do but are too fearful? Find a friend who can encourage you & will be adventurous with you.

Just show up Taking the first step is always the hardest but once you do, you’re always glad you did.

Tell yourself you got this It’s all in the mentality. Give yourself a pep talk. Be confident in yourself and your ability. Surround yourself with people who believe in you.

Don’t worry what others will think This one has always been difficult for me. Once I got over the fear of what others thought of me, I was free to be who I really am.

Don’t over analyze Paralysis by analysis. Don’t overthink anything. It cripples you. Just do it.

Turn fear into fun Don’t take life so seriously. Laughter is the best medicine.

Be present over perfect Enjoy simple things. Live more soulful and present than frantic and overwhelmed. {Believe me, I know it’s easier said than done} Whether you’re a marathon runner or not, we are all running a race, everyday. It’s called life. Live in the moment. Be present. Step out of your comfort zone. Try new things. Be adventurous. Laugh more. Maybe even register for a 1/2 marathon and then don’t train or prepare for it! Whatever it is you’re facing, step out of your box and run the race FEARLESSLY. xoxo Rachel I would love to hear something you’ve recently done that is totally out of your comfort zone. Shock to the Heart Living with Atrial Fibrillation

t least 2.7 million Americans are living with Atrial Fibrillation (also called AFib or AF). AFib is a quivering or irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia) that can lead to blood clots, stroke, heart failure and other heart-related complications. Some people with AFib will not experience symptoms and will only learn they have it from their doctor. Others may experience one or more of the following symptoms: • Palpitations (feelings that your heart is skipping a beat, fluttering or beating too hard or fast) • Shortness of breath • Weakness or problems exercising • Dizziness or fainting • Fatigue • Confusion • Chest pain – this requires immediate medical attention

Know your pulse Your pulse is one tool to help get a picture of your health. Even if you’re not an athlete, knowledge about your heart rate can help you

monitor your fitness level, and it might even help you spot developing health problems. Your heart rate, or pulse, is the number of times your heart beats per minute. Normal heart rates vary from person to person. Knowing your heart rate can be an important heart health gauge. The best places to find your pulse are: • Wrists • Inside of your elbow • Side of your neck • Top of the foot To get the most accurate reading, put your finger over your pulse and count the number of beats in 60 seconds.

Your resting heart rate is the heart pumping the lowest amount of blood you need when you’re not exercising. If you’re sitting or lying, and you’re calm, relaxed and aren’t ill, your heart rate is normally between 60 (beats per minute) and 100 (beats per minute). If you want to learn more about AFib, Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel is holding a Healthy Happenings lecture on Tuesday, April 4, at 12 pm – “Shock to the Heart.” Join Paul Zachary Gerczuk, MD, as he discusses the risk factors, symptoms and treatment options of AFib and how to know when to call the doctor. The event is free and open to the public, but advance registration is required at or (813) 929-5432. Healthy Happenings at Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel is a series of complimentary and/or low-cost health and wellness events inspired to help our community live happier and healthier lives.
