Seven Oaks

CDD information

By Bill Parsons Vice Chairman, Seven Oaks CDD

at the

CLubhouse

I

n May 2004, the residents in The Laurels had a picnic in their neighborhood park. One resident, Judy Skrzypek, suggested that the ladies in The Laurels meet monthly to get to know each other and do something entertaining. They met at the clubhouse to discuss what would be interesting to do. One of the ladies at the meeting suggested a game called Bunco -- a 19th century dice game that originated in England and was imported to the United States just before the Civil War. It was the ideal game because anyone, however inexperienced, could play. A couple of residents had played before and everyone agreed this would be a good idea. So in the spring of 2005, they began playing Page 4

Bunco monthly when the clubhouse became available to the residents on the second Tuesday of each month. The group was called “Ladies of The Laurels”. They began meeting each month on the same night at the clubhouse to play Bunco. Each person brings a favorite dish or snack to share with the group. The food may range from meat dish casseroles, fruit, veggies, chips and dips, cakes, and candy. It’s whatever the player wishes to bring. There are also sodas, teas, and various drinks. After a couple of years not all Ladies of The Laurels could play so Judy reached out to all Seven Oaks residents to welcome newcomers to play with the group. Players who joined

or are substitutes have been from all neighborhoods. And now, nine years later, there are still three original players from The Laurels and another regular player from The Laurels who joined after moving here about six years ago. Some former original players still play as substitutes when a permanent player can not. The game offers the opportunity for an informal social event to discuss neighborhood issues, family celebrations (weddings, births, travel, etc.), as well as unofficial SOPOA and CDD business. There are lunches at a local restaurants occasionally and outings to see a live performance. Once a year the ladies have a gift exchange and cookie exchange. Each person draws a number of order to play “take

April 2014

the gift” until all the gifts have been opened. There is a cookie exchange that usually takes place in late December at a volunteer’s house. The volunteer for the past three years has been the gracious host, Ellen Heims, an Edenfield homeowner. There is a monthly announcement in the Seven Oaks News soliciting residents who are interested in playing. A number to call Judy, Bunco Guru, is provided in the announcement so she can add a person to the “playing list”. Judy may call a person as a substitute player when a regular member can not play, as well as add a person as a “regular” depending on how many are playing on a permanent basis. If you are interested, call Judy. Bunco is lots of fun! v SEVEN OAKS NEWS

Seven Oaks

L-R: Judy Skrzypek, Reta Parsons, and Lydia Suarez are three of the original members who started playing Bunco at the clubhouse in 2005.

CDD information

L-R: Seven Oaks residents Pat Lewis of Villas at Willow Creek, Lynne Brown of Villas at Edenfield, and Renata Ritter of The Laurels.

Bunco Bunco is a dice game played with four people at each table (three or four tables). Two of the four people at a table will be partners for score keeping. At each table is a set of three dice, score card and pencil for each player to keep score. ● The game begins when a player at the head table rings the bell to begin the first round. All tables begin their roll also. At each table a player roles the three dice. ● During the first round, the player gets one point for each dice that has a “1”. The first player keeps rolling until they no longer roll a “1”. The scorekeeper records the score they earned on the table tally as the temporary team score.

Lynne Brown joined the Bunco group in 2013. She adds a dish to the food table.

● The dice are passed to the player to the left. The first round continues until the head table earns 21 points. ● At the end of the round, the two players who have the highest score for the round remains at the table but move to a different seat to have a different partner for the next round (2). The two with the lowest score move to the next designated table and the rounds continue. ● There are many variations to play, but the ladies follow a few basic ones.

♦ B unco: all three dice rolled of the same number playing.

♦ Baby Bunco: any three dice of the same number. ♦ Traveler: three twos.

● At the end of three games (1-6 rounds) each, the number of “Wins”, “Losses”, “Buncos”, “Baby Buncos”, and who has the “traveler” is recognized and rewarded.

L-R: Judy Skrzypek, Lydia Suarez, Reta Parsons, and Fay Zassenbraker, a resident of Forest Edge, is a longtime member of the group.

Some Things, I Think, I Think!

T

here was a song in the 60’s that went something like, “Let me tell ya bout the birds and the bees and the flowers and the trees.” I don’t even remember who sang it but it was one of those songs that stick in your mind and you can’t get rid of it! I think I’ve come up with a slight variation on the old song. It goes something like, “Let me tell ya bout the dogs and the cars and the ponds and the trees”. I’m sure this one will not stick in your mind but hopefully it will remind you about some things that we all need to be aware of to keep our Seven Oaks neighborhoods nice places to live.

Page 6

Dogs need to always be on a leash when outside and the owners need to be responsible for picking up after their dog. I have been guilty of letting my dogs out with out a leash. I’m going to have to train myself to make sure they are on a leash whenever I take them out. Again, it’s a complaint thing.

There is a deed restriction on the books that prohibits the parking of more than two cars in a driveway and blocking the sidewalk. This is especially important when the younger kids are walking to and from school. Sidewalks should not be blocked. We have been getting complaints so that effective immediately our compliance inspector will be taking special notice of this violation.

I wanted to remind all our homeowners that there is NO Fishing We have been getting complaints permitted in the ponds in Seven Oaks. It seems as though some that there are far too many folks feel it is acceptable to walk dogs that are left loose in other people’s yards and far too much through someone’s yard or to park on the right of way to get to the doggie dodo that is not being picked up. I’ve found that Pub- “Old Fishing Hole” ….. It’s Not! Let’s please be respectful of others lix bags are perfect for this. I’m making sure I have some when I property. walk my “multi-bulls” (Maltese Finally, I’m getting to the “Tree” Pit-bull mix). part. As I’m sure you know, the

April 2014

CDD Board is in the process of replacing the Oak trees along the neighborhood sidewalks. This is a huge undertaking and is being done to prevent the sidewalks from being damaged by the tree roots. It is being done in a phased approach, neighborhood by neighborhood. Once the new trees are planted, they will be the responsibility of the CDD for trimming, etc. Until then, the existing Oak trees are the responsibility of the homeowner. Please be aware that you need to keep them trimmed so not to block the sidewalk. Now if I could just stop humming that song! Just some things I think, I think! v Dick Fink SOPOA

No Jewelry Allowed on the Water Slide During the winter months the CDD decided that it was time for a face lift to the water slide that all of you enjoy so much. The entire structure was stripped from top to bottom. All of the rusted areas that were visible on the structure have been blasted, new railings were installed, rusted plate connections were replaced and the entire structure was repainted with a high quality epoxy paint. During this process the slide itself was also stripped down to bare fiberglass and resurfaced with a high quality, high gloss finish. With the CDD spending $81,729.42 on this project for your safety and enjoyment all riders must refrain from wearing jewelry or other accessories when using the slide. Anyone attempting to ride the slide while wearing jewelry or accessories will not be allowed to ride. Accessories are to include, but not limited to, eye glasses, sun glasses, watches, all types of jewelry, metal clasps on a bathing suit, or any other item that may be deemed harmful to the slide surface. This policy is in place for you own safety as well as to prolong the integrity of the slide surface. We thank you for your understanding and hope that you enjoy the newly renovated slide this summer. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Basketball Court Surface for Basketball Only A couple of month’s ago the CDD approved the resurfacing of the basketball courts. The work that was performed effectively rejuvenated the worn surface so that it would once again be enjoyable for the residents to play on. Unfortunately, this new surface seems to also be desirable for other activities such as rollerblading, biking and skateboarding. We ask that you please refrain from using the new surface for anything other than it’s intended purpose as these activities cause excess wear and damage to the surface. For those of you that don’t know Kristen, she’s a mother, daughter, sister, wife and friend to many. She can brighten anyone’s day with just her smile. But behind her contagious smile, Kristen is dealing with a grade 3 astrocytoma brain tumor.

and is currently undergoing radiation and chemotherapy. Although at one time, Kristin thought God was directing her to Germany, her path appears unclear at the moment. One thing still remains. Kristen needs our help for whatever path God takes her down.

Plagued with this disease for just 2 years, Kristen has already gone through 2 brain surgeries

CPA Accountants & Tax Consultants Profits and Gains

O

ur company started in business in downtown Tampa in 2007 at One Tampa City Center. In 2008 we relocated our business to Wesley Chapel to be closer to our home and better serve our community. Our company provides accounting and tax consultation to both individuals and businesses alike. We bridge the gap between the typical tax preparer and accountants to provide you the expertise of a Certified Public Accountant. Our company has a staff with 55 years of combined experience in the accounting industry. We strive to go the extra mile for our clients whether they are a large company or a small business. Profits and Gains takes great pride in offering the best tax, business advice and strategies to all our clients. We take the time to get to know our clients and their business goals. We

believe in educating our clients in the latest tax trends and providing them with confidence in the knowledge that their personal and business financial affairs are handled with great discretion and professionalism. My dream was to become a United States Senator as I started my college education majoring in political science at Florida State University. What better place than the State Capital to further my political ambitions. While at Florida State I took an accounting course and fell in love with accounting and knew I could further help people in a different way. I moved to Tampa in 1983 where I graduated from Hillsborough High School and went on to Florida State University before transferring to the University of South Florida where I graduated. My wife Tanya and I moved to the Meadow Pointe Community in the year 2000.

My wife Tanya joins me at Profits and Gains, as she handles the business development for all our clients. She can give the individual attention to our clients and guide them through starting up a business whether big or small. Everyone wants to live on top of the mountain, but all the happiness and growth occurs while you’re climbing it. We at Profits and Gains hope we can help you obtain your business goals. v Profits and Gains 2240 Twelve Oaks Way, Ste. 102 Wesley Chapel, FL 33544 www.profitsandgains.com 813-386-3144 Ameet A. The Hair Brewery By Brooke Curtis

F

rom competitive softball growing up to the beauty industry! If you would of asked me 10 years ago where I would see myself today, I don’t think I would of ever said the beauty industry. Now being a hair stylist/make up artist, I would not and will not look back!

I am a graduate of the Paul Mitchell School Tampa with tremendous passion and love for the industry as a whole. Being privileged to be a part of an industry that allows me to meet new people, helping them feel refreshed and restore their smile and confidence when they leave the chair is what drives me and fuels my passion for more knowledge and experience. I enjoy hand crafting hair styles and make up from the simple look to coloring outside the lines. I also enjoy expressing creativity by working with models to create breath taking looks for photo shoots and/or special occasions. I have also earned certificates for So.cap. Hair Extensions, Dream Catcher Hair Extensions, and Keratin treatments to broaden my career skills. I will continue to stay in tune with the industry, up and coming techniques trends and styles by attending various trade shows and events throughout Florida as well as industry hot spots such as New York City, NY and Las Vegas, NV.

Wesley Chapel

Giving back to the and being involved in the community is very important to me personally, so to fulfill my desire to give back I volunteer time regularly with Flashes of Hope, Help Portrait, and much more. I am heavily committed to networking throughout the Tampa Bay area. I am a president of a local BNI chapter(Referral Connection), a member of the Wesley Chapel Chamber of Commerce, and soon to be member of the Dade City Chamber of Commerce. The Hair Brewery was established just a few short months ago. My dream has always been to own my own salon and this is just the start! I never really knew how to put my dreams on paper. I always joke with people that I have the creative side of the brain, but far from the numbers side of the brain. After sitting with Ali Walters from Ali Ann & Co. for about an hour and a half, I had expressed my vision, my dreams, my fears, etc. Her words to me where “Brooke, you just have to put two feet in and run with it. You yourself just said, “I know I can do it and it will

be successful, I am just scared.” Ali said, “Brooke what are you two biggest fears?” My response, “Money & Failure.” Ali left me with this, “Brooke this is everyone’s fear going into business, but for the last hour and a half all I have heard you talk about is your dream of owning a salon, Now go do it!” From that day in Mid-December, I have ran with it and I couldn’t be happier. I had a brief overview of the salon concept, but after meeting with people in different locations, etc. Ideas just began to come across my mind. The concept behind The Hair Brewery is still being developed, but a sneak peak is a salon you can come kick back, relax, and escape all while having a great time. The Hair Brewery has a open door for networking and will involve networking highly into the salon concept! The Hair Brewery is located in Seven Oaks at 27453 CashFord Cr. Ste. 102 Wesley Chapel Fl. Grand Opening Special Full Highlight, HairCut and Style $80. Men’s HairCut $10.
