e have received inquiries from residents about repaving of streets in the villages. All the streets in Meadow Pointe 1 are owned and maintained by Pasco County. Potholes will be filled if they are reported to the county at (813) 996-2411. However, when it comes time to repaving a street, the county will charge the owners of all benefited properties for the cost of the project. Unfortunately, property taxes do not fund local road improvements. The property owners benefited will be required to pay a paving assessment. The repayment can vary from five to 15 years depending on the project. Procedures are as follows:

• A resident contacts the paving assessment

office at (727) 834-3601 and a site visit is requested for the roads involved. The resident making the request provides their name, address and telephone number.

The paving assessment engineer conducts a site evaluation and prepares the initial cost estimate for the improvements requested.

The initial contact person (resident) is informed as to the nature of the work involved, along with a preliminary cost estimate. If it is decided to proceed with the project based on August 2013

this information, the initial contract person is then designated petition leader.

The paving assessment office sends out petition letters to all the benefited property owners explaining the proposed project and the maximum amount to be assessed after the work is completed. Also enclosed with the letter is a return envelope and a form on which the property owners vote yes or no for the proposed project. Before proceeding, 50% of those responding must be in favor of the project. However, even if the petition fails to receive 50% favorable votes the Board has the ultimate authority to approve the project where it believes it is in the best interest of the health, safety, and welfare of the residents in the boundaries of the proposed project.

• The Board of County Commissioners

holds a public hearing on the petition and, if approved, the petition becomes a project and is scheduled for construction.

• After the project is completed, all benefited

property owners are billed their share of the completed work regardless of whether they voted for or against the improvement project. v Page 5

Massage Envy asks:

Which massage is right for your body’s needs? By Maddy Cox

n today’s faster-and-faster paced world, virtually no one can say that they haven’t begged the heavens for some relief. If you need to release your body’s tension, you’re best bet is a professional massage (not like those half-hearted back rubs you make your kids give you) from the masseuses at Massage Envy. Because Massage Envy is a topnotch spa, you’ll have a multitude of therapies to choose from. You may want a Trigger-Point therapy massage, which uses cycles of isolated pressure and release to loosen tight areas of muscle tissue that are the sources of pain in other parts of the body. The Swedish massage relaxes the entire body by rubbing your muscles with long strokes in the direction of blood returning to the heart. This therapy increases your blood oxygen level, decreases muscle toxins, improving circulation and flexibility and easing tensions. In addition to all these benefits, studies have shown that a 45-minute Swedish massage can decrease levels of cortisol, a stress hormone, and bolster the immune system. MEADOW Pointe NEWS

If other massages aren’t enough to relieve your chronic muscle tension, you should try the Deep-Tissue massage. It’s similar to a Swedish massage, but targets the deepest layers of muscle tissue, tendons and fascia (a layer of tissue clinging to the bone!), and studies have shown it to decrease blood pressure after a single 45-60 minute massage, as well as lower heart rate and stress hormone levels and triggering the release of mood-boosting hormones. If you are an athlete, you should definitely consider the sports massage. It’s tailored to your sport of choice, targeting areas that are overused and tense from aggressive and repetitive use. Not only can it bring you relief from training stress before a big event, it can give you the enhanced endurance and flexibility you need to excel.

This is an update and clarification on our MPII pool hours. Our pool is open daily, weather permitting, from 10am until 30 minutes before dusk. Closing of the pool, due to weather or approaching dusk, is at the lifeguard’s discretion. When no lifeguard is present, the MPII office and maintenance staff

Obviously we want the pool to be open as much as possible, but safety is our first priority and per Florida Regulation 64E-9.008(8), the pool must be closed by 30 minutes before sunset. Keeping Us Safe As many of you are already aware, in May and June numerous area business were burglarized – including two within Meadow Pointe – the CVS and John Long Middle School. Three suspects have recently been arrested. It is believed all three suspects were at the time living together here in Meadow Pointe. Apparently, they didn’t count on the dedication of our Sheriff Deputies. When the detectives investigating the robberies showed some photos to Rick Meagher, one of MPII’s two deputies, Rick immediately knew who they were. Rick, as one of our deputies, takes his role in our community very seriously. He knows our neighborhood and the residents very well, and he was key in the apprehension of these three suspects. For hundreds of years we humans have been acutely aware of the frequency of lightning in this area. However, last month, the Clubhouse staff became a little more intimately aware of the power of mother nature. On Tuesday, July 2nd, a typical afternoon storm was brewing in our area. MPII staff member Otis Wathington noticed a young lady sitting and resting at the table just outside the clubhouse doors. Other Ways to Conserve Water Throughout Your Home: • Water your plants with left-over rinse water. (Plants also love fish tank water!)

6 days a week. Call today to schedule a pick-up

(813) 395-6994

• Wash only full loads in the dishwasher. Use the “light wash” setting when possible.

In the Bathroom • Install a water-saving shower head. Older heads use 5-10 gallons per minute (gpm). All new fixtures use approximately 2.5 gpm and offer equal water coverage and force. • Many high water consumption problems stem from toilets which slowly leak water because of bad valves, improperly positioned float arms or defective overflow tubes. Place dye tablets in your toilet tank. After several minutes if you see the dye enter your toilet bowl you know you have a leak.

• Consider installing a high efficiency toilet (HET) that only uses 1.28 gallons/flush.

In the Kitchen • Rinse dishes, vegetables and fruits in a filled basin, rather than under running water. Page 16

• Consider buying a high efficiency dishwasher that will save water and energy. Some water districts and homeowners associations give discounts for this.

• Keep a jug of chilled water in the refrigerator for drinking to avoid running the water until it gets cold.

Get Healthy & Feel Great this Spring!

edi-Weighdoss Clinics® offers expert medical help for losing weight without surgery or fad diets!

Whether losing 10 pounds for a bikini or 100 pounds to save your life, weight loss isn’t easy Kelli Maw, MD, noticed that many of her patients were looking for a program that would help them lose weight, and the run-of-themill local options didn’t seem to be enough. That’s why Dr. Maw decided to join Medi-Weightloss Clinics® in Lutz. With summer just around the corner, now is a great time to get into shape! Medi-Weightloss Clinics® is the nation’s premier physician-supervised, weight loss program. Since 2006, the Lutz location has been offering local residents away to lose weight and keep it off, without resorting to fad diets or invasive surgery. “At Medi-Weightloss Clinics®, we have physicians and nutritionists

on staff, and, in addition to the physical aspects of weight loss, we stress nutrition and education,” she says. “Medi-Weightloss Clinics® is committed to seeing patients keep the weight off. We focus on education and living a healthy lifestyle, which includes exercise and appropriate portion sizes. On average, patients lose 7 pounds the first week and 2-3 pounds each week thereafter for the first month. Since opening, the Lutz location has helped patients drop more than 30,000 pounds combined. The program begins with a 90-minute Initial Consultation, where patients receive a comprehensive exam that includes a review of their medical history, a physical, EKG, blood work, and a body fat analysis and weight and BMI measurement. Dr. Maw will discuss patients’ goals with them and make diet and exercise recommendations as well as provide

vitamin supplements and an appetite suppressant if applicable. During weekly follow-up visits, which last 15-20 minutes, patients will receive supplemental injections, a weight analysis, and weight loss support. Medi-Weightloss Clinics® patients also receive access to the Signature Patient Website, which features delicious, healthy recipes and hundreds of exercises. Patients also can track their weight loss success and log their fitness activities. Dr. Maw also keeps patients’ primary care physicians informed on their progress, allowing healthcare providers to align their care, such as lowering blood pressure or cholesterol medication dosages when warranted. And that’s an advantage of the Medi-Weightloss Clinics® Program. By losing weight, patients lower their health risks. At Medi-Weightloss Clinics®, it’s not just about losing weight,

but embracing a healthy lifestyle, improving self-esteem, and preventing chronic diseases. “We will coach and support you so that you can take charge of your weight and health and feel your best again,” says Dr. Maw With the support and guidance of the professional Lutz staff, the process of losing weight doesn’t have to be a lonely one. Let Medi help you make this summer the best season yet! Make 2013 all about getting healthy and feeling great! To make an appointment call 813909-1700. The clinic is located at 24420 State Rd. 54, Lutz 33559. Or go to their website www. mediweighdossclinics. com/locations/ lutz/ for more information. v

t was almost two years ago the first time Scott heard about a wheelchair basketball league. His sister told him that there was going to be an exhibition for wheelchair basketball at the USF campus. Scott Kiefer, a Meadow Pointe II resident, decided to attend that exhibition and see what it was all about. The recently formed Tampa Bay Strong Dogs put on a display of wheelchair basketball that did more than impress Scott – it inspired him. Born with Spina Bifida, Scott has spent his entire life in a wheelchair or a scooter. But he’s always loved sports, and he’s always loved playing sports. In spite of his physical disability, Scott has participated and competed in bowling, swimming, and wheelchair racing. The Strong Dogs and the National Wheelchair Basketball Association had given him a new passion – hoops.

Unfortunately, with the NWBA, it’s not as simple as signing up or trying out for the team. While the NWBA does contain the members of the U.S. Paralympic team, the league is comprised of hundreds of amateur athletes, ranging in age from 8 to over 60. Nearly all of these athletes have to buy their own specialty sports chair in addition to paying for almost all their expenses, including travel, during the season. Scott would not be dissuaded however. He saved for a year to buy his chair, and joined the league as a member of the Strong Dogs this past season.

so walking into the Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center was a bit of a shock – a 12 court facility with six NCAA Final Fours in its history. The Strong Dogs were not so overwhelmed that they couldn’t compete however. They played fantastic basketball in the tournament and finished 2nd in the nation in their division for the 2012-13 season. Scott is, deservedly, quite proud of himself and his teammates. They are more than just athletes and teammates though; they are his friends - friends with similar circumstances in life, whether the cause is disease, a birth defect, an accident, or a military injury. These friends know what each other goes through every day, and they support each other in their unending quest to pursue the same happiness in life that we all do. The next time you see Scott practicing here at the MPII Clubhouse, congratulate him on the tourney, and be inspired by him. For more information about the Tampa Bay Strong Dogs and the NWBA, please go to,, or Like them on Facebook (TampaBay-Strong-Dogs-WheelchairBasketball). v

The team had a terrific season and qualified for the National Championship tournament in Louisville in April. “When we got into the arena, my jaw dropped and my eyes bugged out!” Scott recalled. The Strong Dogs play their home games at Therapeutic Services All People’s Life Center,

A Visit to China

R E s iden t S tor y amazing. China is developing the second tallest building in the world, the total height being 680 meters and consisting of 128 stories. The completion of this building is schedule for 2015.

Maglev Train

s a part of global strategy class for the Executive MBA, the university UT chose to visit China for our international project. Of course, as with any visit to another culture, we got much more than a grade out of the experience!

After spending few hours at Tiananmen Square, we headed for lunch at the Hui Feng Tang restaurant. This was our first dine-in experience in China. A dish was served every five to ten minutes, each very healthy, and the meal had quite a bit of a variety.

Beijing’s population is roughly about 21 million, 50% of which are migrants. These travellers are the primary contributors to the rapid growth of the city, and bring parts of cultures from the rest of China to this great city.

I realized that the Chinese food that is served in the U.S is entirely different from traditional Chinese food. Also, I noticed that in western countries, soup is served at the beginning of the meal, but in Beijing and another northern part of China soup is served at the end. Rice is treated as filler and usually served at the end. The Chinese do not prefer any dessert as part of their meal.

Tiananmen Square Tiananmen Square is one of the largest city squares in the world. It was built in 1415 during the Ming dynasty, and has eleven gates. Each gate signifies great Chinese history. We walked through each one, spent a few minutes learning about the Ming dynasty and finally exited from the south gate.

Great Wall of China The Great Wall of China has rich history, and our tour guide did excellent job in providing information on one of the Wonders of the World. Built in the 7th century

View from Jinmao Tower.

and reconstructed during Ming Dynasty, the Great Wall of China is the largest man-made architecture on Earth. It was mainly built to defend China from the Mongol tribe. We took a cable car to reach one of the main posts at the Great Wall of China. We had about an hour and a half to explore this site before returning to the bus, during which we walked to a couple of posts in the hot, humid weather. It was one of the most memorable experiences of my life.

Jinmao Tower Next we got to visit the French concession and the Jinmao tower observation deck. The view of Shanghai was amazing, and the tallest building in China was next to the Jinmao tower and was clearly visible from a different angle.

We took the Maglev Train, one of the fastest trains in the world with a top speed of 434 Km/Hr (i.e. about 270 Miles/Hr), to Shanghai Pudong Intl. Airport. This train uses the magnetic levitation technique; it literally floats on its track. The project cost about $1.2 billion. There were hardly 50 odd people that boarded this train; although this service is operated in loss, the government of China has continued it to attract tourists. Within a minute or two, the train was cruising at a 300 Km/Hr speed. We reached Shanghai airport in just 8 minutes. It was one-of-a-kind experience. Another thing to be wary of is the fact that the internet content going in and out of the country is censored by the Chinese Government, so don’t be surprised if social media is blocked out or Google gives filtered search results. The most widely used search engine allowed in China is These are just few must see attractions, if you plan to visit China. China is a culturally rich country with a different ethnic and traditional background. I am definitely planning to visit China one more time with my family in future. v
