s a result of their successful fund raising activities, The Rotary Club of New Tampa recently distributed over $42,000 to community and charitable organizations in 2016. Pasco County Now Accepts Paper and Cardboard in Curbside Recycling

Recyclables can all be put in the same recycling container

P

asco County’s curbside recycling effort is expanding by now accepting newspaper, cardboard and other mixed paper to the eligible materials for residential curbside recycling. The change took place this week and licensed private haulers are now accepting the recycled materials in curbside recycling bins. “We hope to reduce the amount of paper and cardboard waste in our trash stream and shift it over to our recycling stream,” said Jennifer Seney, Recycling Supervisor. “It will help our recycling rate and extend the timeframe for adding a fourth burner to our Wasteto-Energy, saving taxpayers money in the long run.” Pasco citizens who have twice-a-week trash service are already paying for recycling service. It’s just a matter of using the service. Paper and cardboard can be put in

the same container with other recyclables. If a citizen would like to know their recycling schedule, they can call their trash hauler. The haulers also have the required sticker to go on the recycling containers. The county has stickers, as well. Pasco does not accept plastic bags or film in the recycling stream. Examples of mixed paper include: newspaper, inserts, junk mail, office paper, paper bags and wrapping paper. Examples of cardboard include: shipping containers (flattened), cereal boxes, shirt inserts, cardboard tubes, and shoeboxes. For information about what you can recycle, go to the Pasco County Recycling webpage at: www.pascocountyfl.net/index. aspx?NID=181 or contact Jennifer Seney at 727-8564539 or by email at jseney@pascocountyfl.net.•

Feeding Children in Summer

S

ummer to me means fun in the sun and lounging out by the pool all day. But you may plan to have a cookout to celebrate this wonderful time of the year, or even a family vacation that you have been planning for months. This year while you’re packing your things take a look at all of the families that are not so lucky to be able to go on a vacation. Most importantly take a look at all the children who will not be able to enjoy BBQ’s and what summer has to offer. Over 22 million Children each year receive free or reduced-price meals through the national School Lunch Program. But only about 3.9 million children receive free or reduced-priced meals throughout the summer. This is why some children

dread this time of year. Low income families tend to need the financial support from both parents, so this means that while the child is home all day the parents or legal guardians are out working. This encourages children to act up and get themselves in trouble. Programs such as Feeding America provides aid for low income children and their family who face hunger throughout the summer. When school is out of session, community summer food programs make up the majority of food distributed. These programs typically receive reimbursement through the USDA Summer Food Service Program for meals provided to eligible children. Last year, the Feeding America network served 5.7 million meals to more than 178,000 hungry

children through the Summer Food Service Program, which represents a 15% growth in meals distributed from the previous summer. Donating to programs such as Feeding America ensures that a child will be able to sustain themselves until school starts back up. Locally you can donate to churches as well. Many churches have their own food bank in which a part of the surrounding community is aided by. In Florida, the summer is one of the most

difficult times for church food banks and food banks such as Feeding America. This is because we are at the beginning and prime of the year’s hurricane season. Many families flock to these programs for emergency aids. That is why many food banks collect safety gear such as flashlights and water bottles as well. America should not be going hungry. Help aid your fellow Americans in this time of need. To find your local food bank go online and search food banks with your zip code.•

Meredith Wilson’s

Coming to Florida College

July 22-23rd!

B

roadway Comes To Camp will produce three performances of Meredith Wilson’s the Music Man on July 22-23 on the campus of Florida College, in Temple Terrace. Producer Royce Chandler directed Broadway shows at Florida College for 11 years, drawing a large following from senior citizens throughout central Florida. He and his wife, Hope, also directed summer camps for the College for 20 years as part of the school’s student recruitment work. Now they have combined their summer camp experience with that of producing a major Broadway musical each summer, recruiting great talent from across the country. Royce and Hope formed The Chandler Family Corporation for Fine Arts, a non-profit, tax-exempt corporation, to produce the camp. Their mission: to provide a rich, educational drama experience for individuals and families who want to participate in a Broadway musical on a creative, professional level in an environment of conservative spiritual values. Both individuals and families are invited to participate either on or off stage. The Music Man will delight you with “Iowa Stubborn,” “Trouble,” “Shipoopi,” “Til There Was You,” “Lida Rose,” “The Wells Fargo Wagon,” “My White Knight,” and “76 Trombones.” The performances will be given in Florida College’s Hutchinson Auditorium at 119 N. Glen Arven Avenue, Temple Terrace, Florida. The public is invited to reserve seats now for 7 p.m. on Friday, July 22, and for Saturday, July 23, at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. Seats can be reserved online at broadwaycomestocamp.com or by calling the ticket line at 209-690-7469. Stay safe in the sun!

I

f there’s one thing I know for sure ITS HOT OUTSIDE! Summer is officially underway which means loads of fun in the sun! Summer calls for a lot of time outdoors and in the water. Whether you are going to the beach, having BBQ’s at your backyard pool, paddle boarding, playing tennis, hiking through the mountains of Sedona, camping at a National Park, on a yacht in St. Tropez or maybe chillin’ in an overwater bungalow in Fiji (don’t I wish!), you need to stay protected from the sun. The sun is no joke! I must admit, in my younger years, I was a sun Goddess. During high school I lived in Arizona where the summer temps soar to 110 plus. What better to do than lay by the pool (covered in baby oil) and fry every day, right? It seemed like a great idea then then but

now I’m paying for it and am reminded daily of my sun Goddess days thanks to the sun spots on my body! Let’s review some stats: • Between 40 and 50 percent of Americans who live to age 65 will have either basal cell carcinoma or squamous cell carcinoma at least once. Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common form of skin cancer. More than 4 million cases are diagnosed in the U.S. each year. • Each year there are more new cases of skin cancer1 than the combined incidence of cancers of the breast, prostate, lung and colon.2 • Over the past three decades, more people have had skin cancer than all other cancers combined. Studies have shown that most skin cancers are linked to overexposure to sunlight

(UV radiation). Therefore, good sun protection is an important way to prevent the development of both sun-related skin damage (freckles, fine wrinkles, etc…) and sun-related skin cancers. What can we do to protect our skin and that of our children’s? • Avoid the sun when

possible, especially from 10-3 when the sun is most intense • Wear Sunscreen Everyday - About 80% of the average person’s lifetime sun exposure is incidental—which means it occurs during daily activities, not lying on the beach. If you’re planning on being out in the sun for longer than 15 minutes, make sure to use a sunscreen with SPF 30. If you use a moisturizer, save a step and use a moisturizer with SPF. • Wear a wide-brimmed hat when possible

• Reapply sunscreen – If at the pool or beach, even waterproof sunscreens start to lose their effectiveness after 80 minutes so be sure to reapply • Wear UV-blocking sunglasses • Drink tons of water so your skin doesn’t get dehydrated

It’s great to be outdoors during the summer, enjoying the beautiful sunshine and making memories with your loved ones. Just be sure to protect your skin every day. Your skin and staying hydrated is so important. Just follow a few simple steps and you’ll be glowing. HAPPY SUMMER!! Rachel Ward owns a jewelry distribution business as well as an inspirational shirt biz. She loves being out in the sun but always protects her skin. She enjoys being able to sleep in on summer days & feel the breeze outside on summer nights. •

RECIPES

ALEA

As things are heating up, children crave something sweet and cold. Here are a few great treats for your child. Peanut Butter Banana Yogurt Popsicles

INGREDIENTS: 2 Bananas 6 tsp Chocolate Chips, Mini 1 tsp Vanilla Extract ¼ cup Peanut Butter, Smooth ½ cup Greek yogurt, plain DIRECTIONS: Just puree everything in a food processor or blender, drop a few chips into the bottom of your popsicle molds, and fill them up. The banana and the peanut butter not only give these popsicles lots of nutrition, they give them an extra creamy texture, just like ice cream! There are all kinds of inexpensive molds available, from the classic, which I love, to a variety of fun shapes. Some molds come with a plastic stick insert, which helps prevent drips, and with others you’ll need plastic Popsicle sticks, which you can find in large discount department stores, or online. A Popsicle mold is a kitchen essential…you never know when the temps are going to spike and the urge for a frozen snack will hit.

Watermelon Kiwi Popsicles INGREDIENTS: 3 Kiwi 3 ½ cups Watermelon Cubes, seedless 4 tsp Sugar DIRECTIONS: Puree the watermelon cubes with 3 tsp of Sugar. Pour into you Popsicle mold about ¾ of the way up. Freeze until Watermelon is frozen. Then puree the 3 kiwi’s with the remaining Sugar. Pour the puree until the mold is full. Freeze until solid. Than enjoy. These easy to make popsicles will most defiantly please the crowd.

Easy Sand Cup

INGREDIENTS: 2 Ring Shaped Chewy fruit snacks 1 square graham cracker 3 Bear- shaped honey graham snacks 1 container Jell-O Vanilla Pudding snack DIRECTIONS: This desert is an easy 5 minute snack that will please your children any day. First off make the pudding as directed. Then pour pudding in little cups I recommend pouring in a cup that coincides with the serving suggestions on the Jell-O. Than top the pudding with a crushed up graham cracker to make it look like sand. Than decorate the top with the remaining ingredients. This is something your children will love to do regardless of age.

Frozen Strawberry Lemonade INGREDIENTS ½ cup Strawberries, Fresh 1 lemon Wedge per glass 2 tbsp Granulated Sugar 2 tbsp Lemon Juice, freshly squeezed ¾ Cup ice ¼ cup water DIRECTIONS: Blend all ingredients and enjoy. That is how simple this drink is to make.

Wells Endodontics is offering GentleWave® Technology for better cleaning, less invasive Root Canal Therapy

N

obody wants a root canal! But when your dentist tells you that it is necessary, or your tooth is throbbing with intense pain and you want relief, you need to see an endondontist. If you ever find yourself in that predicament, why wouldn’t you choose the Harvard-trained endodontist who has performed well over 10,000 successful root canals and who has invested heavily in the latest technology to compliment his considerable expertise and experience? Why wouldn’t you choose one of the three top endodontists selected in a blind survey of their peers as published in the June/July 2016 issue of TAMPA magazine? Dr. Brian Wells and Wells Endodontics have been serving the greater Tampa Bay area since 2007. The quality root canal therapy we have provided to thousands of satisfied patients relieves their pain once and for all and allows them to keep their natural teeth. Having been selected as the first practice in the Eastern United States to utilize the GentleWave® Multisonic Ultraclean™ System, Wells Endodontics is now the only place in Florida where you can be assured of this superior level of root canal cleaning and disinfection. Dr. Wells has been following the studies related to the GentleWave® system in scientific journals for several years. He is

impressed with the technology and with the well-documented outcomes it provides. Multisonic Ultracleaning™ technology leaves virtually no portion of canal space untouched and disinfects at a level conventional methods simply cannot. This procedure utilizes a single-use sterilized hand piece to deliver broad spectrum acoustic technology and a powerful vortex of cleaning fluids throughout every canal enabling Wells Endodonitcs to provide its patients with: • Superior cleaning and disinfection in all areas of the root canal anatomy • Reduced procedure time and post-procedure pain • Removal of all infected tissue • Faster healing with reduced chances of reinfection and • Reduction of potential complications associated with traditional root canal therapy. Dr. Wells believes this new technology, the product of over ten years of intensive research and development, represents an entirely new way of thinking about root canal therapy. More importantly, though, he knows it will enable him to improve upon even the exceptionally high quality of patient care already established as the cornerstone of his successful endodontic practice in Wesley Chapel. We are extremely excited to be part of this significant advancement in endodontic treatment and to be the exclusive provider of the improved quality of care made possible with the GentleWave® Multisonic Ultraclean™ System.
